Is there an in-universe explanation as to why Quill’s ditched his helmet and rocket boots? They have jet packs. The rocket boots comparatively suck. That's like cheap shit you get in the intergalactic version of Radio Shack. And Chris could never have done those amazing hallway moves with a helmet on.

Since Halfworld isn't a thing in the MCU (I guess this is what you retconned out from the 1st movie) does that mean Rocket isn't a halfworlder in the MCU, right? You could consider Halfworld a more intergalactic name for Counter-Earth.

What are your favorite books to teach? I would find it very hard to teach about a book tbh!

Also for some context (because I will not get your references probably), I'm not uncultured is just that I'm not from an english speaking country so I haven't read most of american/british classics (I haven't read Lord of the Flies either but I saw the movie as a kid and it kinda traumatized me). I only read Jane Austen, Edgar Allan Poe and the Brontës.

Lol I didn't think you were uncultured! Lord of the Flies is one of those books I would kinda like to reread as an adult because most of what I remember about it was how we all talked about how traumatizing it was for us in school, but I secretly liked it. (I was the kid who liked most books I was assigned to read in school, except I hated the Great Gatsby lol. When I reread it in preparation for teaching it I liked it, but probably wouldn't choose to teach it again.) Also I remember the black and white movie of LotF, which is scary in the way that old films are scary to kids on top of the subject matter.

My favorite book to teach when I taught high school was The Crucible. The reason I specified a difference between my favorite books and books which are my favorites to teach is because I hated teaching Mark Twain but LOVE teaching the Crucible. Although I also love that book. It's a play, so if you never had the experience of reading it aloud in school, the best way to experience it is probably by watching the movie adaptation with Daniel Day Lewis and Winona Ryder.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (James Gunn, 2017)

Cast: Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Kurt Russell, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Sylvester Stallone, Elizabeth Debicki, Chris Sullivan, Sean Gunn. Screenplay: James Gunn. Cinematography: Henry Braham. Production design: Scott Chambliss. Film editing: Fred Raskin, Craig Wood. Music: Tyler Bates. What can I say? There's lots of swooping and zooming and crashing, some spectacularly weird computerized sets and characters, cameos by David Hasselhoff and Howard the Duck (voiced by Seth Green), some good jokes and some duds, some cheeky music cues (e.g., George Harrison's "My Sweet Lord"), Chris Pratt takes his shirt off, and everything moves along efficiently to set up the next sequel. The movie doesn't dally too long on its Oedipal subplot -- Peter kills his father because he (the father) killed his (Peter's) mother. There were times, as when the only characters on screen are CGI ones like Rocket and Groot, when I wondered if a new Oscar category for semi-animated film shouldn't be considered. So I had as much fun as the latent 14-year-old boy in me is capable of having. I actually enjoyed Vol. 2 more than the first film in the series (James Gunn, 2014) because I didn't have to sit through exposition about who and what these characters are and could get right to the swooping and zooming and crashing.

7. Have you ever despised something you’ve read?

SO many times... in terms of books for school, i absolutely hate great expectations by charles dickens and heart of darkness by joseph conrad... then i dislike lord of the flies just because i find it really boring and the reasoning behind it kind of poor. in more personal books i HATED cazzie david’s book of essays and found it so insanely tone deaf and whiny. i really hated gaby dunn and allison raskin’s book and it permanently ended my enjoyment of their content. i’m sure there are more but i’ve probably blocked them out. 

9. Are you for or against multiple narrators in the same book?

it depends i guess? it depends on if the author is really good. if the author cannot write in a way that makes the narrators seem different then it sucks (i’m thinking of divergent lol). but even a novel like normal people where the writing style is very uniform throughout, i LOVED having both perspectives and thought it was easy to parse out who was talking. also i just started girl woman other and i know that has like 12 perspectives or something and i’m very excited! it depends on the book <3

I came off of this book after reading Technically, You Started It which I absolutely adored and I was excited to read another book told in a texting format.

Hoo boy.

I did not find this book nearly as charming as Technically, You Started It nor did I find the characters as endearing. In short, I did not enjoy this book.

First of all, the format. I thought the texting and emailing format was cute. At first. After a while, the chapter-length emails back and forth got annoying and it was sometimes hard to follow the text messages as the way you told them apart were with tiny monster faces that looked vaguely exactly the same (which matched their email avatars). I feel like they couldn’t figure out how to make the entire book text messages without adding in all the extra descriptions, so they decided that email was a decent idea... but I don’t think people have had email relationships since the mid 2000s? At least I haven’t used email to communicate with my friends since 2010/2011-ish. That isn’t to say that email doesn’t have its place and that I wouldn’t support that - the two characters are supposed to be writers, so it probably makes more sense. But for a book set pretty current, it already felt outdated.

Second of all, the characters. I don’t know if I have ever read two characters I disliked more. I feel like by the end of the book, neither of them grew as people and they just continued on their problematic ways. It is also your tropey-introverted-girl-with-anxiety-is-bfffs-with-extrovert-who-adopted-her-and-makes-bad-decisions. Ava is the introverted anxiety ridden screen-writer with the decent family, who has never been kissed and went to school 15 minutes from her house. The book had a chance to focus on her coping with her anxiety and learning to navigate college, but... it didn’t. [SPOILERS] She gets a new therapist at the school who tries to get her to take a look at herself and her past, and Ava flips shit and insists on going back to her old therapist (which, since she’s only 15 minutes from home... why did she stop?). Also, she has sex with a guy after like three dates, even though she has never even been kissed before, which I guess could happen, but seemed really fake and rushed, just so that Ava could have more things to be anxious over. She often comes off as preachy and wants to give advice and criticism without being able to take it. And her best friend Gen... just enables her. Which Gen isn’t much better - AND AGAIN, SHE NEVER LEARNS FROM IT. She starts a relationship with her TA, someone in her 30s, and also starts relationships with a lot of other red flag people. When Ava calls her out on it, Gen just tells her she doesn’t understand being queer (which, Ava doesn’t and which... GEN NEVER BOTHERS TO HELP WITH).

It’s wonderful to have queer rep in this book, which is the label Gen chooses to use. And yet, the characters are all just... bad. Gen turns into a “I don’t like labels” trope, which I don’t think the author did intentionally, but she just avoids labels at all costs. When Ava asks her if she’s gay or straight or bi, Gen just yells about how I DON’T NEED LABELS and pats herself on the back for it. Like... this has been such a cop-out to avoid bisexual/pansexual characters since forever, so it’s annoying to see it in the year of our lord 2019. Ava asks some really homophobic/transphobic questions and instead of explaining why those are wrong, Gen basically goes “yikes.” She dates? hooks up with? a trans guy, and it’s like she does it for Woke Points, because she definitely doesn’t respect him as she continues to hook up with her transphobic TA. And Ava is as bad as Gen with enabling her to not grow as a person, although she has plenty to say about Gen’s hookups and drinking.

The book all comes to a head when Ava comes out to visit Gen and they get in a huge fight, which is both of their faults. But their makeup feels... fake. It feels like they just come up with excuses for why they fought and while they both sincerely apologize, they don’t actually grow from it.

I thought this book was interesting in theory, but overall it was a mess with terrible characters. I basically kept reading because I thought they would *have* to get better, they had to, there was no way there wouldn’t be some sort of character growth. But nope. The characters are just as immature at the start as they are in the end.

I think if you are still in high school or early college, you may enjoy this book because it’s more relevant to what you are going through right now, however I want it known that there is more to college than this book makes it seem like and you can enjoy it without going to a million parties or hiding in your dorm forever, which is all this book makes it seem like happens in college.
