R.I.P. Thom Bell
Tumblr media
Thom Bell, one of the creators of the Philadelphia soul sound, died last Thursday at age 79. Bell's earliest successes as an arranger go back to his days of working with the local group The Delfonics and producing their hits "La-La (Means I Love You)" and "Didn't I (Blow Your Mind This Time)?" He later joined Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff's record company and arranged music for The O'Jays, Archie Bell & The Drells, Dusty Springfield, Jerry Butler and Jerry Bell. The three of them also formed the Mighty Three Music publishing company. Bell's production genius went on to produce The Stylistics, The Spinners, James Ingram, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Dionne Warwick, Deneice Williams and The Temptations.Bell had formed a songwriting partnership with Linda Creed that was responsible for the hits with The Spinners and The Stylistics.
The sound Bell developed with Gamble and Huff had joyful orchestration, rumbling bass lines and what Fred Wesley described as "putting the bow tie on funk." Bell's training as a classical pianist gave him the vision to add violin and the oboe to his arrangements which was unheard of in R&B. His admitted influence from Burt Bacharach was so strong that he was called the Black Burt Bacharach. The songs he produced were the backbone of '70s soul and his work with Williams in the '80s was on two of her biggest song; "Silly" and "It's Gonna Take A Miracle." Bell retired from music in the '90s around the same time Mighty Three Music was sold to Warner Chappell Music. He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall Of Fame in 2006, the Musicians Hall Of Fame and Museum in 2016 and in 2017 received a Grammy Trustees Award.

(You Make Me) Even Rock Harder
What does Kiss, or better (You Make Me) Rock Hard have to do with Muhammad Ali?
Oh, quite a lot, but only indirectly. On the film soundtrack and in the film credits for his biopic there is this heart-rending piece of music entitled The Greatest Love of All, which was interpreted by George Benson. In 1977.
However, since I hardly assume that Paul Stanley would have thought of the extremely catchy bridge of this song in 1988 (1) as a source of inspiration for Kiss' planned single release on their forthcoming Best Of album, I am therefore happy to shift our attention to the 1986 version by Whitney Houston. You know, the one that was a number one hit in America, Canada and Australia and mercilessly clogged up the airplay of radio stations and music television worldwide. Whitney Houston's second biggest hit overall, trumped only by her ultra-hit I Will Always Love You from the Bodyguard soundtrack, which sold how many copies? 30 million? No, no, 44 million copies!
Holy Christ! That sounds more like a bit of comprehensible inspiration, doesn't it?
But Rock Hard should actually ring another bell, namely one with the name Diane Warren engraved on it. The lady who is credited as its co-author (2), who happens to be the composer of dozens of hits and dozens of top ten hits by dozens of world stars, all of which I can't and I am not willing to list here because I have something else to do in two hours. Including, and this should go without saying, almost half a dozen of songs for Whitney Houston. Even though that happened a couple of years after Rock Hard, I nevertheless say with a satisfied smile: If that's not a good transition, then I don't know what is.
(You Make Me) Rock Hard and Whitney Houston. Somehow I had always suspected without realizing it. But finally I know for sure.
I will always love You (Make me Rock Hard).
Side Note:
(1) This means, I don't really care if Paul outed himself as a lifelong fan of classic soul. Decades later.
(2) And of course also of Turn On the Night and, ahem, Nothing Can Keep Me From You.
The links are both highlighted and start at the bridges to the chorus. Just listen for yourself:

do you know any other perfumes worn by historical figures like otma? 🩷
Elisabeth of Austria wore Creed Fantasia De Fleurs. Obviously we don't know what Anne Boleyn smelled like (AN ANGEL!), but there is some evidence that she had a fondness for rose-water and even had several bottles of it in her inventory. Marie Antoinette was mad for perfume (there are entire books about this), and you can still buy her custom blend of Parfum du Trianon by her very own personal perfumer, Jean-Louis Fargeon. She even packed it for Varennes! (Louis waiting for her to get ready like 😒.) Her beloved Le Jardin Secret has been repackaged as Black Jade by Lubin, and you can buy it here. Marie-Thérèse also wore Lubin. Napoleon had François Rancé create Joséphine for Guess Who. To absolutely no one's surprise, it's like an explosion of rose petals. Victoria was a big fan of Fleurs de Bulgarie by Creed.
Madame du Barry‘s favourite scent was Aqua Mirabilis by Giovanni Maria Farina. Creed's Jasmin Imperatrice Eugenie was created (shockingly enough) for my beloved Empress Eugenie. STARLET SCENTS:
Grace Kelly walked down the aisle in Creed Fleurissimo.
Givenchy created L'Interdit for Audrey in 1957, but she also wore Creed Spring Flower later on - another perfume made just for her! Carole Lombard wore Casma by Caswell-Massey during her flapper era.
Pattie Boyd recorded in her Letter from London for 16 Magazine that she wore Jicky by Guerlain during her dolly bird days. (Also a favorite of Sharon Tate!) LITERARY LADIES: Zelda Fitzgerald wore Salud by Schiaparelli, describing it as "violets and lilies and pink beauty." And just for fun: the fictional Linda Radlett wears Après L'Ondée by Guerlain, and knowing Nancy Mitford, I'm pretty certain this means she wore it herself. 💐🩷

I’m not saying I want SSE to change ms holdsworth. If this is her design now, fine. Whatever. Im furious, but fine.
What I would want is for SSE to have a conversation internally about how they prioritized the streamlining process for background NPC’s no one is going to care about (especially when that was unnecessary because they already have two skinny, tall, old women skeletons to use for those NPC’s) over the already present inclusivity.
Make excuses all you want, a deliberate choice was made. There was a priority, and that priority led to the erasure of a character’s representation, representation that is already overlooked in media.
I could shout about how bad sso feminism is all year, and I know I would get no response because sse fully believe they are the pinnacle of feminism in modern gaming. So instead I really, really need them to prove it to me this time.
In a society that shuns and hates fat women. In a society that see disabled people as obstacles to be avoided. You have fallen into the exact same traps and are upholding the exact same beliefs. So talk about it. Acknowledge that this was a misstep. Apologize and tell us you will try to do better. Prove that you are women positive, and that representation is important to you as a company.
I am reminded of when Ubisoft animation director told Polygon in an interview that animating a female lead for their assassins creed games would be “too much work”, and I promise you the people at SSE were clapping each other on the back, congratulating each other on not being Like That when that news dropped. They cheered each other on for being the peak of inclusivity, for considering everyone and giving every body a place on jorvik. And now we are fed the same excuse, but targeted at minorities that are even further overlooked.
To then sidestep critique entirely and focus on the fact that they made her taller is infuriating. Yes, she should have a slightly hunched back. Not all old ladies are going to have the posture of a Barbie princess. But that’s not the issue and I feel like they know it’s not the issue. It’s more of that PR shit where you acknowledge the criticism, but in such a way that someone who does not know anything about the criticism will not be able to pick up on what they’re getting shit for, thus reducing the damage.
This isn’t a graphics update where you can just shrug and say “those kids, always yelling about the old graphics” this is you making a, frankly malicious, decision as a company because you’ve deemed a group of people too inconvenient. Ms holdsworth IS important enough to be unique. And if she ISNT important enough, who is? Is Linda going to be the only fat NPC left on jorvik once you’re done while everyone else shares the same 3 body types?
Furthering that point, fat background NPC’s can and should exist. Ms holdsworth does not need to be wholly unique. It is disheartening to know that all old people in sso, no matter their importance, are going to share the same 3 skinny bodies. That fucking sucks.

A química do casal é absolutamente incrível!

The Wife of Montecito's Prologue and Tale
HiSkippy, For entertainment purposes only I spent a rather boring Sunday writing a poem in the style of Geoffrey Chaucer. Chaucer (C1340 - 1400) is one of my favourite Enflish authors and, if you can get used to the middle English it is written in, is extremely bawdy and humerous. Here is the result of my efforts, please enjoy, Linda
The Wife of Montecito’s Prologue and Tale
Three husbands I’ve had in the past
And each one wealthier than the last
I tricked them all by wit and guile
When in my bedchamber they tarried a while
And thus, a fortune I have made
For just a willingness to be laid
Each one was useful in his time
Thus, the social ladder I did climb
The latest one, a Prince of Royal blood
Fell at my feet as he were wood**
I convinced him I would do his bidding
And to Royal Duties would be willing
But once his ring was upon my finger
There was little reason for me to linger
Shaking hands with peasants and polite conversation
Was not my want as a fulfilling vocation
I truly believed I could make him a King
Which is why I accepted his cheap wedding ring
Then I found myself thwarted by right of succession
Despite all my efforts to create an impression
I persuaded him to leave the fold
Of family and friends of old
By telling him I had a notion
That he would better fare across the ocean
With my decision he dare not argue
Else on his pleasure I would place an embargo
Now I have the titles and fame I desired
And money enough to buy the chattels required
I am laying down plans to rid this spouse
But acquire all his wealth including the house
I have kept my friendships with men in high places
Those with much power and very full purses
They have money to spend on Public Relations
To spread lies and rumour to ruin reputations
Sweet maidens aplenty doth follow my creed
And shall not forsake me in my hour of need
When my story is told and spread far and wide
The stale, pale Prince will have nowhere to hide
He will now pay the price for enjoying my crack
As to the House of Windsor he shall have to crawl back
So, farewell my failed Prince, I wish you good luck
I am off to ensnare a more lucrative f***
** Made of wood in Middle English implied that they had lost their wits. It is still somewhat in use today in the saying 'A wooden man made of smoke' = someone who is stupid
This is wonderful! So talented you are! Thank you so much for sharing this with us! Wonderful!!!!!😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

“Dancing through the minefield of the contemporary horror film, with its bloody display of the all-too-often female body in bits and pieces, is fraught with danger for women. But pleasure shares the field with danger. Unfortunately, for the female viewer accused of masochism or the female fan labeled an apologist for a woman-hating genre, there is no room for pleasure; only danger is accommodated. But there is more to be gained by approaching the question of female spectatorship of horror by keeping both pleasure and danger in play. It is a move especially suited to this transgressive genre and to the contested question of female spectatorship at hand. Female spectatorship of horror is a much neglected and misunderstood topic, but like other taboo pleasures before it, the pleasure women derive from watching horror films deserves to be explored.
[...]
The horror film's construction of recreational terror produces a pleasurable encounter with violence and danger. But the assumption of much critical writing is that these pleasures are the preserve of men. Women are either absent or cringing in distress. In "The Terror of Pleasure" Tania Modleski (163) contends that "[popular horror films] enable the male spectator to distance himself somewhat from the terror. And, as usual, it is the female spectator who is truly deprived of 'solace and pleasure.'" Similarly, in "When the Woman Looks" Linda Williams limits pleasure in viewing horror films to men: "Whenever the movie screen holds a particularly effective image of terror, little boys and grown men make it a point of honor to look, while little girls and grown women cover their eyes or hide behind the shoulders of their dates" (83). Williams fails to recognize the pleasure of not-seeing, and both she and Modleski assume that the female viewer derives no comparable pleasure from the contemporary horror film since female mutilation and murder figure so prominently in the genre.
In Men, Women and Chain Saws: Gender in the Modern Horror Film, Carol Clover advances the idea that the primary pleasure for male viewers of the genre is a masochistic rather than a sadistic one, but her concern with gender is strictly limited to male viewers. In The Monstrous-Feminine: Film, Feminism, Psychoanalysis, Barbara Creed, who turns her attention to female monstrosity, maintains that the monstrous-feminine in the horror film speaks to men about their fear of women, but she has little to say about how it might speak to women about female power. Both books center the male viewer and neglect the question of female audience pleasure in the horror film. This question has by now become a structuring absence of horror film criticism.
[...]
My discussion of the horror film is motivated by a desire to disrupt the facile assumption that the genre does not speak to women but only about them, and that it does this in a degrading manner.”
- Isabel Cristina Pinedo, Recreational Terror: Women and the Pleasures of Horror Film Viewing (1997).

The Society Hill Orchestra - Stop, Look And Listen A Tribute To Thom Bell from Chrohm HookMaster on Vimeo.
When it comes to Philly Soul music, it is no secret that Butch Ingram is one of the most prolific producers on the scene, with a career of producing and promoting the music for well over 5 decades. Who better then to pay tribute to his colleague and long-time friend - the quintessential composer, arranger, conductor, producer and multi-instrumentalist Thom Bell? Born in Kingston, Jamaica, Thomas Randolph Bell moved to Philadelphia as a child where he was classically trained as a musician. As a teenager he sang with future luminaries Kenny Gamble, Leon Huff, and Daryl Hall (of Hall & Oates fame). His first professional foray into the world of soul music started with Cameo Records where he worked as a session player and arranger. At the tender age of 24 in 1967, he was introduced to a local group called The Delfonics, and subsequently produced two singles for them on Cameo's subsidiary label, Moonglow. Bell brought an entirely new vibe to the process - a sweet, soulful and hypnotic sensibility that set him apart from other producers of the day. Soon his unique production talents yielded several big hits for The Delfonics including "La-La (Means I Love You)" and "Didn't I (Blow Your Mind This Time)," which yielded him his first Grammy Award in 1970. Soon Bell joined the production company operated by Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff, where he worked as an arranger for such acts as Jerry Butler, Archie Bell & The Drells, and The O'Jays. He arranged many of the early big hits, including the O'Jay's "Back Stabbers," on the newly launched Philadelphia International Records label. In 1971, Bell produced another local group, The Stylistics, on the Avco Records label. By this time, he had forged a songwriting partnership with Philadelphia-born songwriter, Linda Creed. With Creed, along with Russell Thompkins, Jr., the lead singer of the Stylistics, Bell and Creed became one of the era's most dominant soul songwriting teams, with hits galore, such as "Stop, Look, Listen (To Your Heart)" and "You Are Everything," for Diana Ross and Marvin Gaye - along with a slew of hits for The Stylistics, including "Betcha by Golly, Wow," "Break Up to Make Up," "You Make Me Feel Brand New" and "I'm Stone in Love with You." In 1972, Bell single-handedly revitalized the career of The Spinners, producing five gold albums including such mega-hits as ""I'll Be Around," "Could It Be I'm Falling in Love", and "Games People Play." In 1974, he deservedly won the coveted Producer of The Year Grammy. Among the other countless acts he had success with included Dionne Warwick, Johnny Mathis, Billy Paul, Ronnie Dyson, Deniece Williams, Anthony & The Imperials, James Ingram and Sir Elton John. With the new compilation, "Stop, Look And Listen: A Tribute To Thom Bell," Butch rounds up the Society Hill Orchestra, saxophonist extraordinaire Benny Barksdale, Jr., and some of the finest vocalists on the Philly Soul scene today to accomplish the task. A dozen songs that Bell had a major role in making hits - most of which he either wrote or played a major role in the arrangement and production of, are on display - and the results are sure to delight both old and new fans of the genre. This music is very much alive, and this fitting tribute to one of its chief architects is indeed a noble endeavor.

people don’t understand the word ruthless. they think it means ‘mean.’ it’s not about being mean. it’s about seeing the bright, clear line that leads from A to B. the line that goes from motive to means. beginning to end. it’s about seeing that bright, clear line and not caring about anything but the beautiful fact that you can see the solution. not caring about anything else but the perfection of it. - katherine applegate
the cultural law which decides that some girls are good and others are bad is not defeated but within its terms pleasure has been negotiated and “paid for” with a pain that conditions it. the “bad” girl is punished, but in return she receives pleasure. - linda williams, “film bodies: gender, genre, and excess”
[on DePalma’s Body Double] the three cinematic categories [the protagonist’s filmic journey: respectable drama (one might even say melodrama), horror, and pornography] are thus ranked by degree of sublimination. on the civilized side of the continuum live the legitimate genres; at the other end, hard on the unconscious, lie the sensation or “body” genres, horror and p/rnography, in that order. for de palma, the violence of horror reduces to and enacts archaic sexual feelings. [...] p/rnography thus engages directly (in pleasurable terms) what horror explores at one remove (in painful terms) and legitimate film at two or more - carol j. clover, “her body, himself”
the fact that the cinematic conventions of horror are so easily and so often parodied would seem to suggest that, individual variation notwithstanding, its basic structures of apperception are fixed and fundamental. […] this is a field in which there is in some sense no original, no real or right text, but only variants; a world in which, therefore, the meaning of the individual example lies outside itself. The “art” of the horror film, like the “art” of p/rnography, is to a very large extent the art of rendition, and it is understood as such by the competent audience. - carol j. clover, “her body, himself”
the horror film’s obsession with blood, particularly the bleeding body of a woman, where her body is transformed into the “gaping wound,” suggests that castration anxiety is a central concern of the horror film--particularly the slasher subgenre. woman’s body is slashed and mutilated, not only to signify her own castrated state, but also the possibility of castration for the male. in the guise of a “madman” he enacts on her body the one act he fears most for himself, transforming her entire body into a bleeding wound. - barbara creed, “horror and the monstorous feminine”
