Running from Shadows

I hide myself from those closest to me - I know the sting of nonacceptance, and I choose lies over that.  

So, each night, I tuck them into bed, warm and safe and hide my monsters (their monstrous visions of me?) under the bed, where they can breathe at night.  I put the flashlight under the bed before they close their eyes, assuring them nothing is there, lying to myself and to them, knowing the truth would make them flee (for their lives?).

I’ve only just gotten them back...I will not make them run again.  I will keep them here by my side...

...as I run from myself.  They follow though - as long as I keep my light focused on them and not what the shadows hide.

I was told once not to fear the shadows, it was whispered to me in the dark that I visit when no one else is around.  

But everyone else is afraid of my shadows, my monsters, my voice that slays the dragon, my heart that holds too much and not enough, my passion wasted on things others don’t understand, my vision too precise and too wide all at once...

“That’s too big,” she said when I sought to bring comfort through the meaning I see beyond the meanings of this life.

“You are too detailed,” he complained when I shared all of the small obstacles and miracles that my day entailed, the hills and valleys that help shape me.

“There are no such things as ghosts,” I was told when I talked about the Spirit moving in and around me before I learned the right words.

“You love the wrong people,” they all scolded me each in turn about the others.

“Be who I want you to be so that I can feel fulfilled,” is really what they say to me all the time.  And I desperately need to be loved, and I reply, “As you wish.”

What are these shadows anyway?

Seems to me they’re just parts of ourselves we’ve left behind in the dark.

For me...they are my moon, my stars, my air, my fire.

And I am the Universe.  Who AM I to be afraid of shadows that I created?
