HAPPY HOLI 2022

We wish all our writers & readers a wonderful Holi Celebration.

As schools reopen across the length and breadth of the nation, our streets have become colorful and noisy. Once again the familiar sights of young people in their school uniforms light up our streets. While safety protocols are still in place, we have evolved into a "living with Covid" mindset. Enjoy the day with your family and friends! For the health conscious sharing a smoothie drink recipe with you.

Smoothie for Good Health

Ingredients- 1.5 cups of washed and raw green bathua leaves/spinach/ cucumber/ gourd , curry leaves 5/6, mint leaves 5/6, half apple/ guava/ pear/ kiwi/ strawberries.

Spices- A pinch of haldi powder, cinnamon, black salt, methi, pepper, lemon, hing

Process

Blend in a mixer till every thing is a paste. Add water 500 ml. Stir well. This should make 3 to 4 glasses of smoothie.

Holi Hai!!! Drink up!!!

HAPPY BHAI PHONTA

The bond between a brother and sister is bittersweet. As they grow up, in the face of external aggression (read either sibling getting bullied) the stronger one always protects the younger more vulnerable child.

When it comes to intra- sibling rivalry the story is a no holds barred punch fest( both metaphorical and real). That is how shared history and common narratives shape the lives of the brothers and sisters. At some point they leave the nest but the childhood memories anchor the relationship and keep it strong. Also the traditions like Bhai Phonta and Rakhi help the bond to grow stronger over time.

WEEKEND WONDER

In spite of the mayhem it can't be denied that inch by inch we are reclaiming our lives. Even though we still work from home employers and employees have come to a better understanding of work life boundaries.Is everyone adhering to them? No. But the meetings at 10.30 pm have stopped. Thank God!

In other areas of our life we are still unable reach a semblance of normalcy. Take our social lives for instance-it continues to be solitary in spite of our best efforts. That is rather sad. Even though the online party versions exist, they lack impact. This weekend make movement your mantra to add that extra zing to your life. Exercise in your balcony or terrace.Talk to neighbours through your window, dance and do karaoke with your room mates and neighbours. Use your balcony, window or terrace. It ensures the necessary distance sans the risk. Enjoy a short break away from your lap top and other devices. Connect to people and chase away your blues.

WORLD YOGA DAY

The human body is one of the most sophisticated machines created by God,Nature or Evolution. What is magical about it is that it is self- healing. For our body to function well it needs fuel and maintainance.

Yoga or Yog Sadhana is one of the best ways to maintain the body so that it runs at optimum efficiency. All of us lead busy lives which make myriad demands on our time. Before we help others we must help ourselves first. This advice is often heard when an airplane taxies off the runway onto the blue sky. We need to heed it.The upkeep of our selves is the most necessary activity that we can possibly do. Yoga is something that can help us to keep running without help for a very long time. Old age in the twenty first century is dreaded by all as it results in a loss of body functions and dignity. Most of the diseases of today are life style diseases which can be reversed, yes reversed with the correct diet and yoga. Yoga teaches us to stretch and breathe properly. This in turn ensures that each of our organs gets its proper supply of blood. Yoga also ensures hormone regulation. In short it is a holistic practice which is based on sound scientific principles. Let each day be a World Yoga day for all of us. May we all reach our wellness goals through pranayams and asanas.

HAPPY RAKSHA BANDHAN

From ancient times the rakhi (a colourful thread) was tied by sisters to the wrists of their brothers. The bond between siblings was sacred and upheld across race and religion. Even when the rakhi was sent by proxy the bond between siblings was condidered immutable. Hope you enjoy the two rakhi stories I have shared in this post. The characters in the tales are historical but their rakhi anecdotes are part of the rich oral tradition of India.

It is said that Rani Karnavati the widowed (Hindu) queen of Chittor sent a rakhi to Humayun the Moughal emperor (a Muslim) asking for his protectection for her kingdom. Humayun who had never seen the queen before accepted the rakhi. From being strangers, their relationship become one of brother and sister. Humayun became Karnavati's protector henceforth. Although he couldn't reach Chittor in time to save her life, he reinstated her son to the throne of Chittor.

Earlier Alexander of Macedonia's wife Roxana sent a rakhi to King Porus( Puru) asking him to protect her husband's life. It is said that Porus on seeing the sacred rakhi on Alexander did not attack him personally.

GOOD FRIDAY WISHES TO ALL

Some days of our lives are meant for solitude and introspection. Good Friday is one such day. Pause a while and step away from the noise and bustle. Learn to appreciate the beautiful creation that YOU are. If you are unhappy with certain aspects of yourself learn to accept and forgive yourself for your imperfections and wrong doings. Remembered when you are down the only place that you can realistically go is up. Whatever state of mind you may be in acknowledged it for a minute and than smile. Your mood will shift to a happy gear. We are being asked to socially distance ourselves again. It is high time we learnt to be comfortable with ourselves, learnt to love the unique person that we are. One of the things we could do is to write about ourselves. Feel free to imagine yourself as an extraordinary being who has a great life. Visualise what you want in minute detail. This will bring great clarity to your thoughts and help you reach your desired outcome. When you know where you are going, it becomes easy to get there.

The river Damodar is the life line of many suburbs and villages as it meanders on its journey to the Bay of Bengal through the river Hooghly. One such village is Ardhagram whose claim to fame is an open pit coal mine on the southern bank of the mighty river. The mine which is situated at the outskirts of the village is managed by a large mining consortium. The north side of the riverbank is called Mejia. It has a busy crematorium overlooking the mine. This “burning ghat” is used by all the villages far and near to conduct the last rites of departed souls.

I do not consider this as ISOLATION/Lockdown having to stay at home with whom we love.

Isolation is what the seriously ill are experiencing in hospital.*

Stop saying that you are bored, upset that you can't leave the house; *while everyone in the hospital wants to go home.*

So, thank God if you have to stay at home, because despite everything, with money or without money, with a job or without a job, *you are in the best place you could be, at home, surrounded by who loves you!*

Perhaps it is time to transform your house into a wonderful place to stay, a place of peace and not of war, of embrace and not of distance.

Anyway, look with different eyes at the situation you are experiencing !!

Make your house a party:* Listen to music, sing, dance......

Make your house a temple:* Pray, pray, meditate, ask, thank, praise, plead ...

Fairy Tale With A Twist- Rapunzel

Class 3.

Once upon a time there was a royal family who was expecting a baby. Suddenly, the queen fell ill.

The King sent guards all over the world to find a cure for the queen. One day, a guard found a glimmering, shining flower. He picked it up and took it to the castle. The doctor examined it. He exclaimed, “This flower has curing powers!” He gave it to the queen and within a few seconds, she was cured. The next month, she had a baby. They kept her name Rapunzel.

Rapunzel was born with golden, flowing hair. That night a dark spirit took away the princess. She locked Rapunzel in a tall tower.

The dark shadow was not very nice to Rapunzel. She did give Rapunzel sufficient food though. Unfortunately, she was not interested in Rapunzel’s personal life. So, poor Rapunzel did not have a birthday.

And she wasn’t allowed to meet her mother, father and sister or talk with them. She grew up ignorant of personal life.

One day a handsome prince came into the tower. He said, “Who is this girl? I was ordered to take Rapunzel to a witch.” “You may have her”, said the dark spirit.

The prince finally took her out of the tower.And she, after a while, she started loving him.So slightly after she had run away with him, she asked him: “Will you marry me?” He disagreed but she said okay and got over it too!Then she found out that he was a thief! And started hating him. She ran away from him and went to her castle! Then she found out that it was her castle and finally found her parents. She was ecstatic. And lived happily ever after!

"LIVING happily ever after" -the stuff fairy tales are made of!

Sunday seems to be just the kind of lazy day when you want to read a fairy tale.

In the fairy tale space for Bengalis we have all enjoyed "Thakumar Jhuli" ( Grandma's Stories) with the "jiyon kathi and moron kathi"( life stick and death stick. )

And how inevitably the bad guy/ villain/the rakshasa would squirrel away his life force usually a "bhomra" or bumble bee in some underwater cave and the protagonist would find it and destroy it.

Achilles had his heel, Voldemort his horcruxes and the rakshasa his bhomra- and in spite of being really powerful they were destroyed!

Makes you pause and think really! Only the pursuit of power without kindness or taking others along with you will breed fear and resentment.Like crabs most people will try to pull you down.

The solution dear learners is to -Remember the super powers of being kind & merciful -Always. That is the most important diversity bridge that we have in our global village.If you want to be famous that is your yellow brick road to Stardom.

HAPPY BIRDS DAY 5TH JANUARY

Birds are such multifaceted creatures. Their motto is to soar high- for the sky's the limit for them. They sing, are gorgeous to look , industrious, teamplayers and above all peaceful.

As parts of the world enter the second phase of lockdown, our sense of peace is being rattled.

Sharing something I cane across on WhatsApp. Like the birds may we too find our inner peace.

The key to feeling real PEACE is being able to accept what is and changing ourselves when the need arises. Acceptance means recognising your EGO’svoice and rejecting it. Acceptance triggers positive emotions whereas non acceptance causes disturbing negative emotions. With acceptance anger becomes tolerance, fear becomes adventure, jealousy turns into inspiration, hatred gets replaced by forgiveness, ‘missing you’ becomes ‘thinking about you’ and the list goes on! Possess positive attitude and thoughts, accept the unchangeable, remove yourself from unacceptable and Go On Going On, and be blessed with deep everlasting peace all around.
