Mr. Jingle Bells - Leta Blake (Mr. Christmas, book 3)
Synopsis
Opposites attract as frosty business partners become fake boyfriends in this Christmas gay romance!
Playing fake boyfriends starts their sleigh ride into love!
After an emergency forces Ashton Sellers from his apartment, all he wants for Christmas is new lipgloss, zero contact from his abusive family, and a place to stay for the holidays. Cue his business partner begrudgingly taking him in.
Walker’s a fuddy-duddy with no sense of fun, but he does have a safe, warm home with four adorable dogs and delicious food on the table.
If it turns out Walker’s also a secret softy with a tender side and a hot body beneath his endless parade of golf shirts? Great, good, cool. And if Walker wants Ashton to pretend to be his boyfriend for his sister’s Christmas-themed wedding? Awesome, amazing.
Could Walker be the safe haven Ashton missed out on as a child? Could they be falling in love for real?
But when Ashton uncovers a painful mistake in Walker’s past, it hits too close to home. As the jingle bells quiet and the snow settles, will Ashton be able to forgive Walker, or will their relationship be over before it ever truly begins?
Mr. Jingle Bells is a gay Christmas story by Leta Blake featuring forced proximity, opposites attract, fake dating, office romance, steamy scenes, and a taffy-sweet happy ending. It’s set in the Home for the Holidays universe, which began with Mr. Frosty Pants, but can be read as a standalone.
Content warnings for childhood abuse, past addiction issues, PTSD episodes, and gambling.
My Thoughts
So far, the themes of this trilogy have grown more complex over the course of each book. And with the finale, we really hit the peak.
Walker and Ashton each have their own baggage and their own trauma walking into a very unconventional roommates situation. When that grows into an even more unconventional – and risky – fake boyfriends situation, everything in their pasts come floating right back up to the surface.
When we were introduced to Walker in the first book, I wondered what had become of him. And now I know. He gambled, he was miserable, and he pulled himself out of a very dark place. And he found support in his friend Casey.
It was nice to see Casey so settled into marriage with Joel, even if it was for a few short glimpses. And getting to know more of Ashton really was as delightful as I imagined it would be – even with his traumatic experiences with addition, and religious zealots as his primary caretakers.
I think what I loved most about this book was the very real feeling depiction of a PTSD attack. I know from personal experience how debilitating they are, and how unpredictable the recovery can be. I’ve never read another fictional account that felt more real, and more accurate. And I know not everyone experiences these episodes – the panic, the flashbacks, the anxiety – in the same way. But the way Ashton fell head-first into his attack felt almost exactly how my own PTSD affects me.
Ashton’s experiences were raw, and they broke my heart. I felt so protective over him. And part of that was projection on my part – how closed off I am, and the things I’ve done in order to protect myself, and keep myself safe. In a way, I saw a lot of myself in Ashton – for different reasons – and I just wanted to keep him safe, and secure.
This book was heavy, and dealt with a lot of very complex topics. But underneath it all were two men learning to grow, and learning trust.
I’m glad Walker and Ashton got their happy ending. I’m glad all of the couples in this trilogy did. I’m a way, it made the holiday theme feel more authentic, and less sugar coated.
This time of year is messy. It’s stressful. And honestly, it’s a lot of bullshit. But sometimes, good things can come of it, too.

I randomly picked up the cutest, gayest, Christmas book and I just cannot stop smiling while reading it.
It's called Mr. Jingle Bells and it features forced proximity, opposites attract, fake dating, office romance, as well as traumatic pasts, doggos, and Christmas fun. This book has it all.
I have about 100 pages left and I will probably go look at other books by this author after I finish.

Raise Up, Heart by Leta Blake
Tumblr media
Read Time: 4 Days (Intermittent) Rating: 4/5
The quote: Poe can speak to you of hearts: the ticking of them, the secrets within; he knows their ferocious strength. Poe understands. Hearts can’t be tucked beneath the floorboard of a house. They will not rest there, complicit and quiet. He knows they are stronger than that, louder, greedier— vengeful. He knows that a heart can come back for you, take you over, take you apart. It only has to beat. Ba-boom. Ba-boom. And within that sound there is infinity, and within infinity there resides the untold and unspeakable. These stories of Poe’s, you’ll never believe them, though they may chill you through. Yet they are true all the same. True like a darling heart is true blue. — Alex
Warnings: death, murder (???)
Raise up, Heart is a story with gothic themes, some might say ideal for the 👻spoopy season🎃. In the gothic tradition, there is a dark romance involved. In this case, the relationship involves Cole Hart, Damon Black and Alex, though there are only two bodies involved. It is a decidedly strange, intriguing and at times disturbing novella. I wanted to like it much more than I did, unfortunately. What keeps it from being three stars is the way Leta Blake writes. She draws the reader into her world and characters bringing them to life.
The whole story takes place over only a week, the exception being the prologue set two years before the main plot. It is written in two perspectives, Cole's and Damon's. Cole is written in the third person and Damon (also Alex) is written in the second person. It's rare to see the second person used at all, but it does work well in this context, it drags the reader in and makes them wonder the extent of the truth. Damon is the character that Leta Blake wants the reader to attempt to empathise with, using the language is the best way to force the reader to try that.
While the second person didn't work for creating empathy for Damon for me it definitely did for Alex. While I say the relationship essentially involves three people, Alex is dead, more than dead just gone, his soul and spirit consumed by Damon, by the force of Damon and Cole's love. I wanted to cry for Alex. I was reading this on the train on a commute. I skipped the smut that was happening around the same time but read intently the Alex moments. It was a struggle to weep. His voice destroyed me. "The fourth journal is very short. Only about twelve pages, and then there are five pages with two words written over and over. Help Me Help Me Help Me Help Me Help Me There’s no punctuation; each plea is scrawled any which way across the page, sometimes overlapping with others. Cole knows that it wasn’t written as a chant but as an intermittent plea in the midst of a sea of great pain and horror." (Cole and Alex) But that is the sign of good writing, something Leta Blake does.
I liked Cole well enough he had a sort of innocence about him that leads to him developing a backbone throughout the story. Cole has a past and secrets and I like the slow reveal of his background. His desperation for Damon makes sense and I don't dislike it. But he seems to lose a part of himself to Damon, potentially not knowingly. Cole and Damon's chemistry was explosive and executed in a way that makes it feel like a gut punch at times when they both remember the cost. I did not like Damon. I understand the point of him, I see why we are supposed to like him but I don't. His is supposed to be a love that even death couldn't kill but he just comes across as wrong, broken. Like Leta has written a monster but without the consequences of that. Some of his actions are just... wait, what, no.
My wish for this book is that it had been less smut and more conversation or angst. I just couldn't deal with Cole and Damon jumping into bed that fast and that consistently. I struggle with it because they almost use it to put off the requisite conversations and pressing issues. This could have something to do with my personal reading preferences too, I have always preferred plot or character-driven stories rather than smut. The balance here just feels off. I think I'd even have been a be happier if this ended without a HEA or HFN, not a cliffhanger just a moment of reason. I like Frankenstein for that ending, that doesn't give you that, it feels more final. I know this is mm romance and we don't go there as a rule. But you know a girl can dream.
I did read this in three sittings, over two days, with a gap in the middle for a library book on ghosts. One thing I will add, this is one of Leta's favourite works (or it was when she wrote it). I get the feeling this was a true passion piece for her. It just didn't work for me. Ugh this review is a total mess but whatever. Sorry Leta
Read for @godzilla-reads Simple Reading Challenge. Filling the October prompt: "Halloween/Samhain Book!! or Spoooooooky Poetry"
I wasn't going to use Rise Up, Heart for this then I read it. Let me add the last paragraph from the blurb... "Rise Up, Heart, is a stand-alone, second chance gay romance, inspired by the famous gothic, short stories of yore. With head nods to Edgar Allen Poe and Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, Rise Up, Heart, is dark, epic, consuming, and dreamlike." If that doesn't sound like Halloween what does? It's haunting and dark and a perfect ode to two of the greats of gothic literature.

@obsessedwithdavrick wanted my top 7 reads of 2023 and I'm a sucker for book recs, so I'll play along ;)
Looking over my list, I read a lot of mediocre shit this year, including some books that get a lot of hype, but fell flat for me. However, there were some highlights. In no particular order:
The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah
Kristin Hannah never fails to evoke emotion and doesn't always give you a happy ending, which is hard, but real.
The Four Winds by Kristin Hannah
See above description. Maybe times two for this book.
Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus
A quick easy read. One of the more popular books that I read that actually lived up to the hype (IMO)
The Book of Lost Names by Kristin Harmel
In a sea of WWII historical fiction, this one stands out.
Why Fish Don't Exist by Lulu Miller
This is a non-fiction book that definitely isn't for everyone. While I didn't love the authors attempts to relate everything to her own life, I loved the rest. Science meets history meets a real life suspicious death.
Now for the MM portion of my recs:
Power Plays and Straight A's by Eden Finley and Saxon James
This is the first of a series of 5 MM hockey romance books. They were just good, easy reads with a nice balance of spice and plot.
How to Say I Do by Tal Bauer
I love almost everything I've read by Tal Bauer. Again, a good balance of sex and investment in characters and storyline.
In progress:
Pictures of You by Leta Blake
I'm cheating and including an 8th one, which is a 3 book series. But actually a series....like it's one continuing story for all 3 books and you won't be able to stop between books. I'm almost done with book 3 and have read them all in the past few days. So, I guess my opinion could change if the ending lets me down, but it's totally sucked me in. It's a queer coming of age book set in the early 90's and it's not all unicorns and rainbows. There's a lot of talk about HIV/AIDS. There's a lot of time spent on dissecting a first love and how it can be all consuming, good and bad and everything in-between. There's secret relationships and coming out and first times and finding your tribe of people; enough sex scenes, but that's not the focus really. It's also fun to revisit a time before cell phones and internet.
I won't tag people, but I'm always up for good book recs! Send them my way!

Mr. Naughty List - Leta Blake (Mr. Christmas, book 2)
Synopsis
A cute teacher gets a spanking this Christmas. How hot can it get being on his former student’s Naughty List?
Is Aaron allowed to want a hot holiday fling with his young former student? Even more forbidden, is he allowed to want this student to spank him?
It’s another Christmas, and Aaron is still in the closet as a gay man and a natural submissive. With one youthful indiscretion blacking his ethics record, he can’t afford to indulge his desires no matter how pent up and needy that leaves him.
Until his former student comes home for the holidays.
Dominant and charming, RJ knows what Aaron needs—intense, steamy encounters and a firm hand. As Christmas nears, RJ helps Aaron unlock his true self. But family and fallout await, and all good things must end.
Or can their hot holiday affair turn them into lasting lovers?
Mr. Naughty List is a steamy, Christmas MM romance set in the Home for the Holidays series that began with Mr. Frosty Pants, but can be read as a standalone. Featuring light D/s, spanking, an older sub with a younger Dom, former student/teacher dynamics, and, of course, warm, sweet holiday feels complete with a strong happy ending.
My Thoughts
This book dealt with a few tropes that I’ve not reviewed in the past. So we’ll get this part out of the way – they are fictional characters, doing fictional things that have no bearing on reality. I am fully capable of – and technically trained in – the skill of critical thinking. If you’re not, and if you cannot separate fiction from reality, avoid this trilogy, because these characters and these tropes do appear in all three books in some form or another.
Now enough with the disclaimers and housekeeping.
I loved this book. I loved how Aaron and RJ found their way to each other, and I loved how they communicated openly and honestly about everything, from boundaries to insecurities to their feelings for each other.
As with the first book of this trilogy, both men have some baggage. Both men have some prior trauma to work through. It’s messy, it’s imperfect, and it’s a constant work in progress, but they’re committed. And that’s what matters – transparency and commitment.
Another aspect of this book that I greatly was the depiction of kink. It was safe, sane, and consensual. Boundaries were drawn, limits were discussed, and safe words were agreed on. And honestly, knowing how seriously RJ was about ensuring Aaron’s enjoyment and safety of their play was the hottest thing in the whole book.
While a little steamier – and kinkier – than some of my usual romance reads, I still really enjoyed Aaron and RJ’s story. And while I think I’ll always be a grinch in my own reality, I can at least enjoy some fictional holiday romance and cheer.

🎤 for Addie!
Send 🎤 to catch my muse singing while they think nobody's around!
Time to put my metal on
Tumblr media
The words came from her velvety lips like a lilting whisper. Adrastia's starlit eyes were closed. And why not? This was a moment to be savored.
Whose blood to spill? I don't know Whose side I'm on?
All of her hard work leading up to this day, this moment.
Two armies are coming at me Their flags and weapons look the same One tells the truth, the other's lying And they're both calling my name
The song was perhaps a misnomer. Her mind was already made up. It had been for a long time. But this was perhaps the last chance she had to back out. Before she donned her blonde wig, white dress, and porcelain mask.
This is how villains are made This is how villains are made Ooh, ooh No one ever starts that way But this is how villains are made
Her own path to villainy had been laid out before her. It was something that she had never shied away from. It didn't matter who's side she chose. Who she chose, or was forced, into serving. She was a killer all the same. It was all she was good for.
Time to put my metal on Whose neck to cut? I don't know Whose side I'm on?
Leaning forward, Adrastia gripped the edge of her vanity. The polished wood splintered and cracked from the sheer force that the huntress was applying. The song continued to spill from her lips in a raspy, panting voice - much unlike her normal crooning.
There lies my sanity There goes my mind, I could not save I don't trust what i see right in front of me I don't know who to betray
Unbidden, the faces of all those she would betray flashed through Adrastia's mind. Some stung more than others. Her father and Ianus could go fuck themselves. They were dead men walking. But Ren, Liane, Leta... they didn't deserve what she was about to do.
A pretty black bow flashed behind her eyelids and Adrastia's entire body shuddered. Her voice raised as she continued to sing, as if she were crying out in pain.
Aah, aah, ooh This is how villains are made This is how villains are made Oooh
Blake had abandoned her. She had left her at their crossroads. Had turned down her begging. The only person to love her like she did... but Blake ran away from her all the same. Adrastia hadn't known what she'd expected.
It wasn't like she blamed Blake. Well, too much. Okay, a lot. But Adrastia could see the logic. Anyone with any sense could see that Mistral's Spear was poison.
So easily we're persuaded When the lines are blurred and faded No one ever starts that way
But she started that way. She was raised as such from before she could even form any memories. Raised to kill. Raised to take care of problems. For Mistral, they said! For justice! They got their weapon... She got cheated out of her childhood...
But this is how villains are made This is how villains are made
No, there was no going back now. It was all going down tonight. By the time the clock chimed midnight, the Mistrali Council would be dead in its entirety. The city would be burning. It would be left as a crater, easy pickings for the Grimm...
Her path was laid out before her. The path that she CHOSE, for once in her life.
It was fortunate that Adrastia had simply been singing and not speaking any of these thoughts out loud. For she was completely unawares of the golden eyes boring into her from the crack in her door.
