#Archovember Day 14 - Leptoceratops gracilis
The Leptoceratopsids were a basal family of ceratopsians that, even though they looked quite primitive, lived in the Late Cretaceous. Their type species is Leptoceratops gracilis, who lived in Western North America. They had a powerful bite, used for shearing and crushing tough plant material. No doubt their sharp parrotlike beak could also be used for defense as well. Fossils from the Hell Creek Formation show that these small ceratopsians actually socially raised their young in burrows! A predator may have been less inclined to stick its nose in a burrow with an open staple remover sticking out of it! Leptoceratops could also rear up on its hind legs and even run like this when necessary.
Tumblr media
Living in Western North America, Leptoceratops would have lived alongside many familiar dinosaurs. It would have lived alongside (or underneath) its ceratopsian cousins Triceratops and Torosaurus, ankylosaurians like Ankylosaurus and Denversaurus, pachycephalosaurs like Pachycephalosaurus and Platytholus, other ornithischians like Edmontosaurus and Thescelosaurus, ornithomimids like Struthiomimus and Ornithomimus, and oviraptorosaurs like Anzu. Being so small, Leptoceratops would have had a lot of predators to look out for, making its burrows and sharp beak very handy. It was the perfect size for not only large dromaeosaurs like Dakotaraptor, but also for the famous Tyrannosaurus rex.

Montanoceratops cerorhynchus was a leptoceratopsid ceratopsian dinosaur from the Latest Cretaceous of North America. While the ceratopsian evolutionary line is usually condensed into smaller forms evolving into larger ones, the leptoceratopsids confound this usual perception as late-surviving small ceratopsians. The type genus, Leptoceratops, was about 2m long and little over 200 lbs, absolutely tiny compared to the 9m long, 11,000 lbs Triceratops it lived alongside in the Hell Creek Formation.

My big idea for Genie Team Season 10
Well, this is my 500th post, so I thought I’d talk about something big. That being one big idea I have for Grantgfan’s Genie Team season 10.
With that being the 10th season, I thought that my idea for it would be pretty big too. And my idea for The Genie Team season 10 is… the genies, their masters, and their friends finding out the realization of dinosaurs (and other prehistoric creatures) all around the world.
And this whole thing would be teased at the end of season 9, where a large map of the world with thumbtacks stuck in it, with each one depicting a known location of dinosaur sightings. They’d be 14 in all (at the moment); with 5 in North America, 3 in South America, 4 in Africa, 1 in Indonesia, and 1 in Australia. And as season 10 progresses, more thumbtacks would be added to the map, with a different color representing a different wave; like red for wave 1, blue for wave 2, green for wave 3, and yellow for wave 4.
And speaking of waves, the dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures would make appearances in the several waves below. WAVE 1: Dryosaurus, Gallimimus, Homalocephale, Kentrosaurus, Pachycephalosaurus, Styracosaurus, Ankylosaurus, Brachiosaurus, Camarasaurus, Corythosaurus, Edmontosaurus, Ouranosaurus, Parasaurolophus, Stegosaurus, Albertosaurus, Ceratosaurus, Dilophosaurus, Velociraptor, Acrocanthosaururs, Allosaurus, Spinosaurus, Tyrannosaurs Rex, Triceratops, Torosaurus, Carcharadontosaurus, Alioramus, Apatosaurus, Baryonyx, Compsognathus, Deinonychus, Diplodocus, Iguanodon, Maiasaura, Ornithomimus, Panoplosaurus, Tenontosaurus, Thescelosaurus, Wuerosaurus, Yangchuanosaurus, Pteranodon, Dimorphodon, Mosasaurus, and Tylosaurus.
WAVE 2: Othnielia, Hypsilophodon, Mamenchisaurus, Supersaurus, Brontosaurus, Ultrasaurus, Lambeosaurus, Shantungosaurus, Anatotitan, Olorotitan, Tsintaosaurus, Saurolophus, Hadrosaurus, Altirhinus, Centrosaurus, Einiosaurus, Pentaceratops, Euoplocephalus, Protoceratops, Psittacosaurus, Avaceratops, Microceratus, Orodrmeus, Gastonia, Edmontonia, Altirhinus, Brachylophosaurus, Gryposaurus, Hoplitosaurus, Stegoceras, Prenocephale, Tuojiangosaurus, Lexovisaurus, Paranthodon, Miragaia, Struthiomimus, Troodon, Proceratosaurus, Herrerasaurus, Torvosaurus, Tarbosaurus, Carnotaurus, Majungasaurus, Desplatosaurus, Suchomimus, Irritator, Procompsognathus, Ornitholestes, Cearadactylus, Geosternbergia, Nyctosaurus, Elasmosaurus, Plesiosaurus, and Styxosaurus.

It’s a lot of species, I know, but it’ll help in making season 10 of Grantgfan’s Genie Team even bigger. And I’d gladly help him in figuring out the scripts for future episodes of season 10.

Whelp we’ve got about a week and a half til November (aaaaaah), so I guess I’ll post this year’s Archovember list now!
It’s a bit dinosaur-heavy this time, but there are a lot of species I’d really like to try my hand at! Also, we have two leptoceratopsians and two Araripesuchus species. I thought it would be interesting to compare and contrast these species within the same month, so I hope it doesn’t get /too/ repetitive!
For new folks: this is my “Draw Dinovember” list that I expanded out to include other archosauriforms. I started doing this a few years ago to challenge myself to draw species I’ve never drawn before and/or ones that don’t get a lot of attention. Feel free to join in! You can do the whole list, just the dinosaurs, just the pterosaurs, just the pseudosuchians, just your favorites, just ones you’ve never drawn before, roll a D20 and a D10 and draw the sum of whichever numbers you get, etc. Just make sure they’re posted on or after their specific day so I remember to share them on my blog! You can use #Archovember or #Archovember2023, as those are the tags I follow. (Note that I and the whole Archovember event are usually a lot more active on Instagram so if you have an IG I encourage you to join in there!)
Anyway, here is the list in case the graphic is hard to read:
1. Your Choice!
2. Furcatoceratops elucidans
3. Tupandactylus navigans
4. Deinosuchus hatcheri
5. Herrerasaurus ischigualastensis
6. Lewisuchus admixtus
7. Supersaurus vivianae
8. Zhejiangopterus linhaiensis
9. Dynamosuchus collisensis
10. Megalosaurus bucklandii
11. Macrospondylus bollensis
12. Miragaia longicollum
13. Dorygnathus banthensis
14. Leptoceratops gracilis
15. Stagonolepis robertsoni
16. Shantungosaurus giganteus
17. Paleorhinus bransoni
18. Cascocauda rong
19. Kelenken guillermoi
20. Prestosuchus chiniquensis
21. Yangchuanosaurus shangyouensis
22. Istiodactylus latidens
23. Kunbarrasaurus ieversi
24. Araripesuchus wegeneri
25. Tylocephale gilmorei
26. Ixalerpeton polesinensis
27. Udanoceratops tschizhovi
28. Tapejara wellnhoferi
29. Araripesuchus rattoides
30. Scutellosaurus lawleri
One last note, and a warning I usually issue to new paleoartists: while looking for references for these species you’ll come across David Peters. His references tend to dominate search results when looking for less well-known species. They are also highly inaccurate, even the skeletals. So make sure you omit “The Pterosaur Heresies” and “Reptile Evolution” from your google search. If you have issues finding references, let me know and I can share what I’m using!

Cosmosaurs update!
Thank you everyone so much for all the enthusiasm on my last post! I hoped you would enjoy them but I was surprised by how much positive feedback they recieved!! Y’all’re awesome.
I’ve put together a few mockups of how I plan to colour these! The space background I think will be in watercolour, and the swirly clouds I will attempt to make in gold leaf! Haven’t used it before so we’ll see how it goes!
