August: Fantasy & Sci-fi
Doctor Who ("The Deadly Assassin," season 14) / Llewellyn Rees as the President
Doctor Who ("Arc of Infinity," season 20) / Leonard Sachs as President Borusa
Here we have two variations on the same basic costume, the robes of the President of Gallifrey. The original design (with the white cap) was by James Acheson for "The Deadly Assassin." The elaborate shoulderpiece/standing collar became instantly iconic. Since this costume is seen on a particularly ceremonial occasion, it also includes the golden Sash of Rassilon and the mirror-backed gloves.
The version used in "Arc of Infinity" (with the gold cap) was designed by Dee Robson. This version includes the roundels with the infinity symbol which are seen on everyone except the president in the earlier episode.

The Saint: The Spanish Cow (4.8, ITC, 1965)
"Oh Simon, you're a wonderful man!"
"Yes, I know. It's the clean living."
#the saint#the spanish cow#itc#1965#leslie charteris#michael cramoy#john gilling#roger moore#gary raymond#viviane ventura#nancy nevinson#arnold diamond#leonard sachs#michael wynne#david jackson#nicholas donnelly#terry yorke#back on the french riviera‚ so naturally we're visited by Col. Latignant once again. he gets rather more to do here than in some#of his other outings‚ and he's even given a bumbling assistant to spark off (played with deadpan splendour by Michael Wynne)#the plot is fairly familiar guff about valuable diamonds and a country in need (the fictional Santa Cruz; I know there are many real Santa#Cruzes but I don't think any are countries?). Simon must help or not help the widow of a former dictator.. perhaps wisely (or perhaps#cowardly) he never really gets drawn into the political aspect of the discussion‚ focusing instead on doing his diamond thief biz#terry nation would have written this very differently imo. anyway. Gary Raymond gets to chew the scenery as the villain; he was a good get#for the team too‚ having made a couple of high profile films and starred in an adaptation of Martin Chuzzlewit for the bbc the previous#year (sadly lost); the following year he'd be starring in The Rat Patrol in the US. Viviane Ventura also travelled over the pond to try and#make it big but with less success (she did a couple of MfU and Get Smart eps). both are still with us happily‚ and Raymond in fact still#acting (he can be glimpsed in House of the Dragon atm!).

The Good Old Days was a strange show. It ran for a staggering thirty series, from 1953 to 1983. The format recalled the days of Victorian/Edwardian variety theatre. Contemporary entertainers performed material in the style of that era. Everyone - from the verbose compere Leonard Sachs, to the stars and the audience - would dress in clothes of the period. What makes the show's extended lifespan even more remarkable is the fact that it bored the life out of anyone below the age of forty.
All the top UK acts and some from further afield graced that dusty old stage, but very, very few commanded it with such presence and style as Eartha Kitt did in 1972.

THE MEN OF SHERWOOD FOREST (Dir: Val Guest, 1954).
An early production from Hammer Films, The Men of Sherwood Forest is a low budget but spirited romp with Don Taylor as the legendary Robin Hood.
The simple plot involves Robin attempting to thwart an ambush attack on Richard the Lionheart on his return from the Crusades.
More famous for their Horror movies, Hammer also did a nice line in swashbucklers; the studio produced four Robin Hood movies, of which this was the first.
Although clearly working with a meagre budget, director Val Guest makes decent use of outdoor locales and the movie feels less studio bound than might be expected. It also benefits from being shot in colour and whilst the action is not as well staged as in a more lavish production, Guest generally elicits decent performances from his actors, not all of whom are perfectly cast.
Don Taylor makes for a slightly bland leading man. There is nothing essentially wrong with his performance and with an athletic build he certainly looks the part of Robin. However with an accent that is more Hollywood than Sherwood, Taylor lacks both the authenticity and charisma of earlier Robin Hoods such as Errol Flynn or Richard Todd. Likewise, Leonard Sachs is not ideally cast as The Sheriff of Nottingham, lacking both the authoritative air and any real sense of menace to make a truly memorable villain.
The best performances are to be found in the supporting cast. Maid Marian is inexplicably missing from The Men of Sherwood Forest; her replacement here is Lady Alys in a nice performance by Eileen Moore. A loyal ally to Robin, she holds her own with the best of the Merrie Men, but there is no romance between the two. Robin’s most significant relationship here is with Friar Tuck. As the wily man of the cloth cum con artist Reginald Beckwith gives a marvellous comic performance which is arguably the movie's highlight.
While The Men of Sherwood Forest is no masterpiece, as an example of the sort of boys own adventure that once filled matinees, it is invaluable. Cheap and cheerful maybe, but also engagingly innocent, old fashioned fun.
