Hi! I love your reimagining of LO! I just have a random technical question about canvas size for long scroll comics. Would you recommend following the WT sizes (maxing at 800px width) for posting to tumblr? Or maybe something else entirely? Hope it's not a dumb question

Not a dumb question at all!

So the one thing I will recommend is to always draw big, export small. So whatever format you're using, whether it's Clip Studio or Photoshop, work in bigger canvas sizes with high resolutions, even if they're higher than what WT allows, because you can always resize the JPG/PNG exports for smaller sizes, but you can't make a small root file bigger for other things without losing quality.

I use the same standard size for pretty much all of my webtoon projects, with a fixed width of 2400 pixels at 350 dpi. The height doesn't matter so much as Webtoons will crop your episodes for you (or in my case on Tumblr, I just cut out the segments from my pages with the marquee tool and transfer them over into Tumblr, I try to make these segments as small as I can while minding the image limit so that Tumblr doesn't compress them to shit). Sometimes I have pages that are 20000px high, other times I have pages that are as high as 35000px, it just depends on how the sketches turn out, especially if I'm doing a set of panels that need to be interconnected.

When I finally export my pages, I usually size them down a touch so that Tumblr doesn't slap me for image sizing restrictions, I do the same thing with Time Gate on WT because they have a 20MB limit. So for Time Gate I export it to 800px width, but for Tumblr I go a little higher around 1600px. But I keep all the root files at their original sizes, this is so that if I want to post my art anywhere that doesn't have such strict image constraints, I can. It also means I can get decent quality images for print.

So really the only thing I keep consistent is the 2400px width because it's easily divisible by 800 if I need to post to WT, makes my brain happy LOL And I just sorta stuck with it for Rekindled because it works. And I always, ALWAYS keep those root files at their original sizes!

Yo, what do you use to make your Gifs? Seems like everyone else has gifs that look amazing. Even on my highest "quality" setting. They still post looking like a bunch pixels that wants to know if it looks like it knows what a Jpeg is.

Hey! I'm not sure about the exact result just from the description lol but gifs can turn blurry or lower quality because of various reasons. On Tumblr, it might be caused by the dimensions of the gif. For one gif on a row, the max size used to be 500 pixels, now it's 540. (This post has a quick overview.) If it exceeds that width, the gif will appear more blurry. Tumblr also compresses gifs if the file sizes are between 5-10 MB, though I have no idea how/if that effects the quality tbh.

The size of the video/screenshots you work with is also important. Since I have a copy of HoA, I record my own gameplay of it with 2304 x 1440 dimensions. An 8 min video with those dimensions has a file size of like 1 GB, and 1 screenshot has a file size of 1-2 MB, but it helps being able to gif only a small part of a scene and with image quality in general. Tbh I'd love to freely share either video or screenshots with other folks for editing purposes, in a way where people can just nab them if they wanna, but the file sizes make it difficult.

Probably unnecessary to add, but anyway: within the game, you can also set various image quality options to a higher or lower quality, so if your computer can handle it I recommend putting those settings as HQ as they can go.

Another important factor is not to oversharpen or undersharpen the images. If I crop out a lot of the canvas I usually sharpen it once, and if I keep almost the full image in the gif I sometimes sharpen it twice (in steps, eg first reduce the image size from 1400 x 1400 to 950 x 950, sharpen, then reduce the image to 540 x 540 and sharpen again). But that really depends on how the final result looks. More advanced folks use more detailed ways of sharpening (such as Smart Sharpen... or Unsharp Mask... in Photoshop) but personally, I stick to regular sharpening since it looks nice enough too and it's 1 click, as opposed to sliding the bars around to find the exact result I want.

I don't think doing 1 of these points wrong will lead to a horrible quality, but combining all of the bad points may lead to very blurry or pixelated gifs.

For recording I use what Windows has (by hitting Windows + Alt + R), for screenshots I use VLC media player, and for editing PS.

And for anyone looking to get into editing or giffing without PS: Photopea is an online website that emulates a lot of PS functions. The gif and text functions are sadly still a bit limited compared to PS, but it's free, doesn't even require an account, and it does incredible work imo <3

How do I make my family trees, part 1

Hello, today I bring you my very first attempt at a tutorial. Time ago I made a couple of family trees that showed how different royal couples were related. While I only posted two of these trees (on two different blogs) and then abandoned the project, I always wanted to go back to it, specially since there are a some that I did but never posted.

The other day I was asked how did I make them, so I thought that this was a great chance to go back to this forgotten project. So more trees are coming. But first, a tutorial of how I made them!

First a disclaimer: while I enjoy making edits I'm not actually super skilled on the art and just managed with the bare minimum edit tools of Pixlr. So this is just how I do it, which is probably not the best way to make these trees. Also I'm not even sure if it is the easiest way lol, but I like making them like this because it gives me a lot of control on how the tree will look like, which genealogy websites do not. Because of Tumblr's image limit this tutorial will be done in two parts.

For this tutorial I'll use a simple first cousins marriage as an example, since this kind of trees only have eight people and therefore are easier to draw. So I'll work with Duke Karl Theodor in Bavaria and his first wife, Princess Sophie of Saxony, who were maternal first cousins.

Let's begin!

1. Do your reasearch.

An obvious first step, I know, but this is absolutely necessary. If you're doing a tree that shows intermarriages then you need to make sure that know exactly how many people will be in your tree, and how they are related to each other. It has happened me that I made the tree and then realized that I missed that two people that were on opposite extremes of the tree were second cousins once removed and now I have to start all over. Almost every royal on Wikipedia has an "Ancestry" section with a mini family tree that goes back like four or five generations, I normally base my trees on that info (because the genealogy enthusiast on the Internet will never let any mistake slide, unlike actual published books). Also a tip: the Spanish version of the Wikipedia articles tend to have bigger trees than the English version. Once you are done, we can move to the next step.

2. Draw your tree (on paper).

This step won't be necessary in our example since it's just an eight persons tree, but if you're doing a bigger one (like the H7 and EoY one) then this step is pretty important. Because trees with a lot of intermarriages are an absolute nightmare to put together if you don't want any lines crossing. So you need to figure out how it will look like before you start editing on Pixlr, otherwise you'll likely end up redoing it many times until you get it right.

Currently I'm working on a big tree that covers tons of marriage, and figuring out how to put it together was legit the hardest part of it. Here is a peak to the last of the many trees I drew, in which I finally managed to make sure no lines crossed (can you guess what is it about?)

As you can see this is just a rough sketch drawn with a pencil on a page of my French notebook. I don't even bother writing the names, this is just to figure out how I'm going to organize these people on the tree. Of course if you don't find this necessary you can skip this step and plan the tree however you like, this is just how I do it.

3. Get the pictures for your tree

I usually just download the person's default profile picture on their Wikipedia page and call it a day lol; but if I can choose I try to choose pictures that depict the people around the time they got married (that's why I chose Ludovika and Max's portraits from their twenties instead of photographs of them at an older age). If the spouses pictures face each other the better, but I don't bother too much if they don't.

My advice is that you download all the pictures you'll use before we can move to the final step of part 1 of this tutorial.

4. Crop the pictures and turn them into PNGs.

Finally, we can start working on Pixlr! Open pixlr.com, the website will give you three different options of editors. I use the simple version, Pixlr X, since these trees don't require many tools.

Now open one of the picture you chose. I chose this photography of Sophie of Saxony, which is both her default Wikipedia profile picture and my favorite picture of her. The first tool we'll need from the side bar is the "Crop & rotate"

Once in there, crop the photo to show only the person's head:

Now with the photo cropped, we can move unto the next tool we'll use: the "Cutout". What this tool basically do is cutting out the background of your picture and leaving only the shape you chose, I use the circle shape.

This is the end result! Now the picture has an oval shape with transparent background. I usually go back to the "crop & rotate" tool and crop the photo again, so it doesn't have that extra empty space.

Save it as a transparent png and it's done! Now you do that with all the pictures you'll use for your tree. I chose a circle shape, but you can use whatever of the other options you want.

Tomorrow, the second and final part of this tutorial in which I actually will show you the trickiest part of the tree making: drawing the tree on Pixlr!

hey there!

tbh I’m not the best at explaining but I hope my humble tutorial will help you. Also, I referenced from the tutorials @usergif a lot. It is my go to when i need tutorial or help :)

Shoutout to all the amazing gif/content creator out there! Also if any of my content creator moots have any helpful guides, please do leave it under the reply ❤️

Firstly, i’ll have my scenes to gif ready. I either use VLC player or Quick Time player to screen record ( i’m very basic lol). Then I open Photoshop and here goes.

1. File > Import > Video frames to layers. And then I’m gonna choose the file that I’ve trimmed from screen recording and choose the part I want to gif first (circled in screenshot)

2. Then you can see the amt of layers, you can play and see which part you want (if it’s a LOT of layers) to delete because too many = exceeding 10mb limit for Tumblr

I have my own theory 🧐 that for certain size, only a certain amount of layers will fall within Tumblr 10mb limit size. I mainly use these 3 sizes to crop so: square (max 45-50), 1028px (max 60-65), 1280px (max 70-80). if you’re doing extensive colouring/gradients/blending etc this needs to be further limited so that it doesn’t exceed 10mb. Crop sizes I usually use:

3. Set frame delay. I click on the 3 lines > Select All Frames. Click on 1 of the layer dropdown > Other > 0.05s. Tip: you can set at 0.03s and then after you’re done with your gif, you can re-time it to 0.05s, it’ll be smoother but I’m lazy so I just do at 0.05s.

From this steps onwards, it will be very long. I made an action for myself where I click on the play button and it’ll automate for me but idk how to share this with you 😭 so bear with me for the steps.

4. Click on the 3 lines again > Convert to Video Timeline

5. Select > All Layers

6. Filter > Convert for Smart Filters. And then you have a single layer like below:

7. Now we go to Sharpening. I refer from usergif tutorial on sharpening (you can follow the tutorial!) I tweak it around to my preference and use high pass instead of vivid.

For high pass if you want to try. Filter > Other > High Pass > 4.0 radius. Then you want to double click on the line beside high pass, Mode: Soft Light, Opacity: 80%

8. Next! The fun part. Colouring!! (I’m not an expert at this because I play around a lot) All my sets are coloured from scratch but I use this settings for easier colouring. It can very long if it’s a difficult scene to colour. This tutorial from usergif tutorial is very helpful!

9. Then I will resize this. Image > Image size > Width: 540 px

I was totally bummed when you deactivated your first tumblr. Your posts make me smile. They're like a photo journal of magical fey girls. I do have an actual question though. Every day you post new content. Do you have a horde of content that you dole out in dribs and drabs? Or are your posts new photos that you've taken and then posted like an actual photologue? I hope you keep posting.

nice to hear. pics are mostly not mine, saved from random flickrs in the course of inspo hunting. i upload tumblr's image limit (200ish) every few days to the queue which ive set to max (50 per day). the limit is good because otherwise i could inspohunt on flickr forever. i have almost a thousand flickr pages bookmarked for future hunting lol.

i deleted because i felt silly but idk, i should be doing inspohunting anyway for work. now i feel double stupid because the entire point of doing this was to stop being embarrassed at myself for everything, and i fucking deleted in a case of the midnight feel like shits even so. well also i had some stupid weed gummies again which always make me feel the worst. so done with those. smoking makes for better pics. but anyway...back now

M’kay I’ve watched Ephemeral live and then rewatched the next morning with subs, and now that it’s been over 12 hours I’m ready to move on to the new Gabriel Agreste trailer and synopsis.

Ft. me adapting, improvising, and overcoming the tumblr image limit

This opening image is the one that got spoiled a while ago. People thought it might be a flashback but now I’m not so sure. I think it’s just Gabriel scheming about tonight’s plan. The masks are very trope-y. “Evil rich people party with creepy, unique animal masks”. *insert Squid Game reference* Good ol’ horror-fiction human-sacrificing cult vibes.

Ooo someone pointed out that they look like the zodiac animals with the pig, dragon, dog, rabbit, potentially a rooster up there, but maybe they’re based off the miraculous animals beyond the zodiac too because one looks like a fox and another is kinda cat-like. It’s hard to make out what some of them are.

I’ll be honest, this side of the plot was not even remotely on my bingo card. Took me by surprise. Much to talk about, though.

You know this “Marinette likes Adrien but can’t talk to him” bs is getting ridiculous when Marc and Nathaniel feel the need to Intervene. And the whole girl squad plus Zoe is in on it too, like you know this stuff’s getting serious. The entire Counsel (sans Kagami) is here to orchestrate the ship.

It’s hard to remember that this is only episode nine, meaning that Zoe has used a miraculous, but not Mylene, Rose, nor Juleka, and Alya is still a temporary hero. Man how time flies.

It looks like they’re using a fairy tale themed puppet show to represent the plan? Uh, okay. Corny romantic metaphors aside, did Nathaniel draw Gabriel as Maleficent??? That’s amazing. It’s like in Party Crasher when Nino defaced photos of Agreste Manor as a fortress, Gabe as a devil, Nathalie as a witch, and the bodyguard as a gorilla. I wonder who that figure on the left that’s cut off is. Adrien? Mari? Is she little red riding hood or something?

Where did Marc’s hair thing go? His pineapple leaves? Animation error?

It’s neat that they’re kinda repaying the favor they owe to Marinette for getting them together back in season two. This and Gigantitan feel like a sword in the stone type scenario where everyone tries to make Adrienette canon and nobody can lmao. On a deeper note, I’m really glad they’re doing this because I think this is the episode that’s going to justify them getting miraculous in the future. Kim had Syren, Max had Robustus, Alix had Reverser, etc, so most of the others did something heroic or respectable on at least one memorable occasion as civilians to show how they don’t need miraculous to be heroes. Before, I really thought they’d shoehorn some rushed bs reason into the first half of the hero episode(s), so I’m relieved that they will get a bit more development before that, so Ladybug’s decision to choose them is natural.

Lastly, I have to wonder how stupid this plan is gonna be. In all honesty, whenever characters “have a plan” outside of akuma battles, it always goes painfully wrong. From the synopsis it actually sounds like it doesn’t crash and burn, and that Chloe is the only wrench in it, so maybe it actually won’t be a secondhand embarrassment-inducing dumpster fire for once? Or maybe I’m getting my hopes up cause like. Marinette’s disguise is a sticky mustache.

Obviously it won’t make Mari and Adrien start dating or anything, but now I’m thinking... in the episodes before this they don’t interact much, but afterwards we have Adrien taking Mari’s hand in Mega Leech and the bubbles + “I don’t always get what you’re saying but you always have good intentions” in Guiltrip. Idk idk, feels unlikely that the plan might actually be good just based on how these things usually go.

You’ve heard of candy cane Gabe, now get ready for black licorice Gabe.

Why isn’t Adrien following the dress code? I zoomed in and I think Gorilla is playing with his action figures lol. Did someone bribe him again or is he just bored? Glad to see goth NPC girl could make it. I see a mask type with a long bird beak and one with a big nose like a bear or something.

Thing 1 and Thing 2 have arrived. Time to cause troubleee...

90% sure Gabriel is making a sentimonster of himself to turn into The Collector. The synopsis says that Marinette discovers a supervillain has snuck into the party as well, so I’m thinking she finds the real Gabe as Shadowmoth. Speaking of, so does Felix.

Hopping back to “is the plan actually decent?” another thing I noticed is that Sole Crusher and Queen Banana are before this, aka Chloe’s regression into being an exaggerated mean girl. In this ep, she tries to sabotage the plan, and Mari tries to stop her. Whatever happens, Chloe... seems to actually stop? The only episode after this we’ve seen with her being more than a background character is Optigami where she uses Zoe as a human shield, and she’ll be akumatized in Penalteam, but other than that I can’t remember her causing problems. Maybe Mari will help her realize that her actions are selfish and that she’s putting Adrien, one of her only friends who she just betrayed last episode, in danger. The fancy rich people party plus waitress!Mari setup reminds me of their truce in Animaestro, so maybe, just maybe, we’ll get some Chloe being kinda okay for a while.

The party must be a G.A. designer brand thing because there are... chalkboards? With designs on them in the background.

At first I was confused as to why Kagami straight up punched the book and sacrificed herself head-on as opposed to putting up more of a fight, but then I noticed Maristache in the back behind the stairs, so maybe she’s giving her a chance to escape like what she does later in Optigami.

The plates LB and CN are throwing at Collector are probably just normal plates from the event. Idk what that logo is, though. It doesn’t look like T+S nor the Grand Palais so idk.

Aaaaand this. Hooo boy. We know someone’s learning Gabe’s identity, and it looks like it might be Felix. And it looks like Gabe figures him out. We got that spoiler image of Felix stealing the miraculous which is probably why The Collector targeted him, but how will this end? This is just one if allegedly three times Felix shows up this season.

What’s weird is how Felix seems softer this episode than he did in Felix. What’s the truth; is he a manipulative demon child who’s just that good at lying, is he getting development due to a change in circumstance, or was Amelie telling the truth and the events of Felix were just an atypical manic episode? I always thought Felix would be a villain, hence why the s3 ep is named after him, but maybe he’s more of an antihero like the PV suggested. I hope we learn more about his motives and why he stole the ring last time.

Finally, back last spring, I thought this would be a flashback episode, but it’s mostly not. I think there might still be a flashback because of the interview referencing the Agreste kitchen, which I’m honestly very curious about. I think we might still get a glimpse of the past before the events of the show, however far back they take it.

Chat cosplay Cont.!!

Day 4:

It's 9am and I have decided to dye the lace before class. I took a silly 5 minute video of me having a blast dying the fabric lmao

Oh before I get into it, I put the chat ears up to my head to see what It would look like and it sounds like a sea shell. It muffled a lot of sound so I need to drill holes in them somewhere TvT

Please excuse my messy hair, it did not want to be brushed.

Anyway, back to the lace! The lace I got was very cute ^^ I used this rit fabric dye stuff because that's all Walmart has.

Afterwards, I did what the instructions said, wash it out and put it in the dryer.

This is the closest I could get the camera to capture the true color I see. It dyed a lot faster than what the time said because it was nylon, thank God because I didnt have patience lol.

After this I went to class ^^

it lightened up a bunch when i came home.

I had about an hour or two between class and work so I had the choice of dying the robe since I got it, doing the mask, or figuring out how to drill holes in the ears and attach them.

I didn't get the package for my robe and mask yet as I thought I would have had it before 2pm and I did not. Drilling holes in the ears it is then.

Putting in holes actually helped a lot more than I thought. It was still muffled but it more so echoed in my ears so it wasn't as bad. I put three for where the i want the front of the ears to be, because I want to be able to hear whoever I am speaking to, and one in the back so sound doesn't get as trapped and I can hear better behind too.

I'm probably just speaking nonsense but this makes sense to me. It might not actually do anything putting holes in these but it helps me.

After a long time at work, I HAVE RECIEVED THE GOODS.

Really helped that I work at a coffee shop so I garbbed like five shots of espresso when it hit 9pm and I closed. We staying up tonight to work on this thing.

Day 5:

I really worked on some of this day 4 but it reached midnight went to bed but I was too tired to document it haha.

All I really did last night was cover the face like this with paper and I pretty much paper mached it. I wanted to give it a stitch looking design because chat is after all just a bunch of people. I painted it white and then went to bed.

This morning I dyed the robe and painted the mask :)))

My silly little workspace yet again was the tub and hot water. I wanted to use a pot to do the robe right but I figured whatever the robe looks like it'll be fine.

The robe looked fine dying, I added more black to it to darken it but since this wasn't nylon and it's polyester, the dye didn't stick as much. There was an acrylic paint spill in it of black paint and now there's parts that are just pure black :<< but it's mostly all on the inside so I hope it doesn't show too much 🙏🙏

While I waited for the robe to wash in the washer I finished painting the mask.

So far the whole thing is looking good >:))

Tumblr has a max limit of ten images so I will have to archive some images.

What I want to do next with the mask is put like a see through black fabric there to hide my eyes and make the illusion of twitch eyes look better as well.

I need to bust out my sewing machine as well to make the sleeves of the robe skinnier. I don't have enough lace TvT

(AN OC FOR @kibadoglover45 story! All the characters I'll mention besides: Cole, Jackson and Valak belong to @kibadoglover45 as well as her story! THIS IS A LONG POST WITH LOTS OF GOOGLE IMAGES AS WELL and my grammar isn't good sorry if it confuses y'all!)

Cole as a teen was a very witty person just naturally witty, and also a tactful being. She's socially awkward and clumsy somehow always ending up with something on her like a scrape or bruise. Cole is very sheepish and described by others very sweet and the kindest person you'll ever meet. She moved out at age 16 with her older cousin Jackson Bray, who's 19, to out of state with his twin brother and eldest brother tagging along, but they don't live with him but in a different household. It was also a way to get Cole out of her toxic troublesome home and away from her toxic strict family. This is when she attends to the new high school, she meets the boys named: Creeps, Kevin, Vincent, Charlie, Brian, and a girl named Bernadette. She easily becomes friends with them when they interact with her first though, somehow she got in to Charlie's group no one nor Cole herself knows how but just glad she's now one of them. Soon she was already seeing Alester(idk how to spell it-) Conscience and the other creatures. She has her own infestation of a creature herself that she calls Auntie Valak, a demonic woman whatever she is that's been stuck with Cole since 7. Valak can possess Coles body and do and say whatever she wants from within her, causing her eyes to show through Cole demonic yellow cat eyes and black goop dripping from her eyes and mouth, her teeth becoming daggered sharp and shark like, her skin a little paler. Valak is a powerful entity, able to talk to others through the mind and change their mood swings. Cole starts to get a liking towards Charlie out of all people, she somehow does though and tolerates him mostly. She mainly hangs out with Kevin and Vincent, being similar to those two the most. She basically drops out in the middle of the year and hangs with Creeps while the others are still in school, and oh boy the things they do together-(if Creeps attends class or just skips school and didn't drop out I'm sorry Kiba TwT I heard and thought he dropped out-) While Jackson later meets Max, Vincents older brother- don't ask me how I'm still working on it lanskejs- and well Jackson finds Max his first friend after the move. He likes Max (not in that way-) But yea life is new and wonderful for Cole and her cousin(s) but still getting use to it.

When Cole enters adult hood she begins making resin art and selling it for a living while also playing the piano, her personality also changes being more chill and laid back but also more clumsy then as a teenager. She also becomes more comfortable with people and more extroverted, being a huge weirdo with crack head energy, and making people uncomfortable like creeps does. Plus having back bone and standing up for herself and others now, and less very less socially awkward. Auntie Valak is still there but either stays home or leaves her alone most of the time letting her live her life. She mainly doesn't hang with new people and keeps close with her ole gang. Man, this project ate my brain. Also, when my imagination comes up with a building in a desert planet daydream, it skips really important details. Like, how the stairs work with the building silhouette... and then Sims physics comes along and goes “oh, you can make spiral staircases but sims won’t know how to navigate them lol did you discover that when you were almost done with the build? Awww.” That said, I got this thing smished out of my brain into a playable space, and the vibe is kinda Riddick meets Mad Max meets Dune.

The screen shot order is a mess partly because there’s so much to see and also the tumblr image limit. Sooo yeah, organized chaos it is. This place is basically a cafe, garage, and hotel all in one, with a deep well and garden area to help supplement off-world shipments or whatever resources the planet provides. I could say more about this thing but I’ve got a migraine that hasn’t damage controlled well and it’s lunch-at-dinner time so yeah. Stuff. And things.

y’know what i’m still feeling annoyed and petty, plus i’m stuck inside and it’s storming out so why not type out a checklist of what everyone in TOW did to me.

since i am mean and manipulative, petty and pathetic, and so much more? why not bring up some old beef and give ya’ll something to eat.

Gansey: tried repeatedly to instigate drama -- if not actively break up -- my OC ships by encouraging -- through IC shenanigans -- cheating and lying. One of these happened while I was on vacation with my family and i still remember crying about it in a hotel bathroom because i thought one of my few ships in the RP was over and I hadn’t even been asked about it. This also included trying to get his OC Tomas to make IC/OOC (hey you can feign innocence when it’s in that dubiously OOC space, until its receptive in which case you can say it was IC the whole time!) at one of my ship partner’s OCs. Made repeated fat jokes at one of my fat characters (the same one they were clearly trying to get away from their partner...hmm...). Claimed I was always running to vague on my personal. Fair enough, I did, but they did the same thing. In poem form. Never answered my message about leaving the RP group because they felt ‘disrespected” by it. Repeatedly including untagged dubcon/noncon elements on the dashboard and triggering me. Lying to Ivy and me about having a full Overwatch party then trying to say “oh it just emptied you can join now”. hid this “FAR” idea from the rest of the RP community and then played coy when they got found out and asked about it by another anon (not me). Made fun of other RP groups in Tumblr tags then, when I asked them and their friends not to, was told “we’re a step above them.” Saying I was excluding them from things when I asked to play OW with them AND invited them to my horror RP group AND, only months beforehand, were inviting them to my Marvel RP??Trying to emotionally manipulate me through threatening to kill characters they had obviously grown tired of playing (probably because their major connections were to me and not their other friends) -- “haha i’m probably going to kill (my oc) idk but doesn’t that make you upset?? what will (your character) even do??” Engaging in nasty “”IC”” interactions with my character, basically telling me, through them, off, and being supported by the entire community in doing so. All of this really hurt me because I considered Gansey a friend and a major inspiration at one point in my life. Someone I non-jokingly looked up to and trusted. I feel like Gansey left TAR, our first RP group, because of how controlling, self-interested, petty, and mean-spirited the admins there were. That they were limiting other people’s creativity while building up their own narrative -- everyone else just there to be their audience. But you and Roman literally became Usa and Jen. Congrats. You lived long enough to become everything you’d rebelled against. And yes Gansey -- I saw all of your messages to everyone. Emotionally manipulating others -- telling them how terrible you are you don’t deserve their friendship, but would like to -- isn’t an apology. Its a tactic. Do better in the future. And despite me “blocking” you? There were a hundred ways to still reach out to me if that was what you really wanted. But let’s be real. It wasn’t. That was part of your gambit to. Goodbye.

Rosie: asked literally EVERYONE about what had happened with the ““TOW explosion”” except me. never even asked my side of the story. Rosie I don’t even get because the other admins treated her like shit -- making her do all the coding and technical components for the entire RP -- but she was still defending them to the end. Okay. And then to treat Shelly like utter SHIT even though Reyne was running her passive-aggressive mouth off about people who couldn't even defend themselves? Amazing. Yeah, she’s the bully. Your perspective was so twitested by your biases that you were ready to victim blame Shelly just because Reyne had to run at the sight of someone actually throwing their bulltshit back at them.

Reyne: Like Gansey, frequently indulged in cheating/cucking scnearios for fun -- again, including my own characters without asking or telling me. Don’t think Reyne ever apologized for this, IC or OOC. Dropped ships with me repeatedly -- leaving the group even -- without a word. Passive-aggressive to the max. Made a ship with Gansey just to play out her Teen Wolf OTP -- something that will never not be funny to me, when she called Gansey’s “character” Stiles. Smooth.

Frankii: Repeatedly dropped me and my characters from plots. Gave me one of the most hurtful comments of my RP community by essentially being like “maybe if your plots and characters weren’t so confusing than more people would want to RP with you.” Invited to join my horror RP group and never made a character. also told me this after Gansey wrote that enormous callout about me, that Roman piggybacked on while the getting was good: “also I'm not here to advocate on behalf of my friend but I really don't think Gansey was trying to be rude last night, they can come off a certain way when they're stressed.” COOL. The rest of Frankii’s message I really appreciated, at the time, but, surprise surprise, then despite us being “cool” they never spoke to me again.

Laura: I actually really liked Laura tbh but I guess she didn’t feel the same. Some of our interactions back in TAR were actually some of my favorites. I invited her to join my horror RP group and she never made a character. When I asked about this -- and if she needed any help making someone or wanted to leave -- she said she was working on it. Basically stonewalled me over time. Honestly though? Not a lot to say I actually think Laura is a good writer and pretty cool. Its just obvious who her friends were and I, stupidly, thought I was included in that.

Anna: Actually I really liked Anna too tbh but I guess I vastly overestimated our friendship? It happens. Dropped me from one of her plots -- after talking to me about including me in one of hers because she felt “obligated” basically, from being featured in my own -- without mentioning why or talking to me about it. Invited to join new RP -- refused (not mad about this, just making note of it). Refused to follow my new account when I lost my old one because “lol they’re such a furry”.

Roman: lmao where to even start. Roman was condescending and elitist literally from the beginning of TAR. barely acknowledged my existence until he had to.I started a plot with an open invitation to the entire RP group, with a deadline so I could start writing. Roman waits until its over and complains that they were left out. I include him anyway. Roman mocks the fact that I ask to tag or outright remove aphrodisiac dust -- because I don’t like seeing untagged dubcon/noncon on my dashboard, it upsets me a lot -- and then goes on a whole thread about it after I go to bed and can’t even defend myself. Apparently told his friends not to invite me to things because he doesn’t like me??? And then he has the nerve to be like communication is key and you can come talk anytime??? While having me on their public “friends” list with a description about me on his blog??? omfg...I literally can’t. To this day. Actually let this image speak for itself.

Everything Else: The repeated, childish treatment of strippers as immoral (””your character is stripping?? my character is so upset and is going to protect them!!”). The implication that characters who were stripping were also automatically sex workers. The continued references to my character, who owned this establishment, as being sleazy and manipulative. Also, honestly, what was with ya’ll adopting some random teenager into your OW groups? That was weird af. And then bringing some random person into TOW without asking anyone and trying to pull rank like “we’re the admin team and we can do whatever we want”. and shit-talking Meg and me in your “open forum” when all we wanted to do was get on with out lives. Like? Who cares? Ya’ll didn’t want me, at least, there anyway, clearly. You don’t get to exclude me then talk about how disrespectful and “wrong” the way I left was..........

Me: I didn’t do everything perfectly either. I know I could be passive-aggressive. I could be self-interested. I could make bitter comments. I dealt with feeling angry and upset by making memes -- which, I’m gonna be honest, I get why ya’ll were upset but I don’t regret either. I had spent so long in TAR/TOW with nobody interested in my characters and plots -- originally because I didn’t vid and played furries but, later, well.........see above -- that I did focus on my own narrative. I wasn’t invited to plots. I didn’t have sexy vampires and boy band werewolves. I played weird characters that didn’t fit the common niche of the cast of an angst and hookup filled supernatural YA novel. Maybe my plots were confusing but, honestly? It was because they were always going to be in the background. I wasn’t disinterested in anyone’s stories. I had just been left out of them for so long -- having to beg to even be a mention in a single mention -- that I had to make my own. I wasn’t there to just be an audience member to be aghast by Roman’s newest quirky boy or Gansey’s newest possessed twink. I was a writer. A member of the community. And, at the time? I thought a friend. Someone who deserved appreciation and respect.

I know who my true friends are now. We did, ironically, exactly what you did -- we have out own group, our own setting, our own community.

And I still live with the mean and manipulative things YALL said everyday. Even as an adult -- even with everything I’ve accomplished and am so proud of -- I’m still traumatized by being treated so poorly -- for years -- and not even realizing it. Something I’m still working on -- one of the many reasons I still have trust issues to this day. Congrats. That’s your legacy on me. aNYWAY

This might be long so please bear with me. I'm sorry you didn't get the response you were hoping for with your latest scenario. I've noticed this with a lot of writers after they come back from a long hiatus. I ask that you consider a few things before giving up hope: recognize that you haven't written in a while (for good reason) and that some of your followers may no longer be active on tumblr. VIP fandom is pretty quiet right now, especially on tumblr. 1/6

I personally don't even search the scenario tags for Big Bang anymore because there is rarely any new content. I'll admit I didn't read your latest piece until I saw your post about being discouraged and felt bad. I'm not crazy about the Nannyverse (please don't hate me it's just not my cup of tea!) and tend to skip updates on it, but after reading it, it could be a standalone oneshot. 2/6 I appreciate that you tackled things that writers typically don't, because I feel like Seunghyun would/does suffer from body image issues. Usually with scenarios involving him it's very one-note and people don't bother to explore anything outside of his domineering T.O.P persona. So thank you for that. And as usual it was well-written and easy to visualize the scene you created so please don't think you've gotten rusty or anything! 3/6Which brings me to notes on scenarios. Fanfic is free & feedback is important to authors in order to keep content flowing, we as readers should know & respect that. I find it easier to give "notes" on sites like AO3. I can read the story & leave a kudo whether I'm logged in or not. I use the Likes system on tumblr as an archive so I don't usually "like" scenarios unless they blow me away & I plan to read it multiple times. That sounds super harsh, but it's how I keep my account organized 4/6On tumblr I prefer to write to the author (like I'm doing now) to let them know what I liked about the story. That way I'm doing my part as a reader, but it's still a double-edged sword because the notes on the post don't change and I know they’re important to authors. I always feel guilty about that, but there's no real anonymity option on tumblr besides writing feedback this way so I feel stuck. 5/6 ANYWAY, what I'm trying to say is that: your writing is still amazing; VIP fandom on tumblr is dead; maybe you can explore options like AO3 (crossposting your work?) to reach a larger audience. Also, your first 5 tags on a post are the most important so make sure you're hitting active/relevant tags first. I hope that made sense and was helpful in some way. I realize that I was just being needy and whiny with my post. I know that the VIP tumblr fandom is dead right now. Almost every piece of writing that I’ve put up for the past year has maybe 25 notes max. So, I knew it was coming... I just didn’t expect it to be (essentially) just one note.

I don’t hate anyone for their reading preferences. That’s why there’s so many different kinds of literature out there... something for everyone! Slow burn, domestic bliss romance is not everyone’s cup of tea & I totally get that. Please don’t feel bad for not reading it if that’s not the type of thing you like. But I do give you credit for trying it out anyway. Thanks for that!

Q: Why the Mad Max Fandom?

A: Fury Road blew my goddamn mind. I like action movies and female action protagonists, but nothing has ever quite hit me like Fury Road. I couldn't stop thinking about it. I had never written fanfic and didn't know what ao3 was, but the characters just wouldn't leave my head. I started seeking out meta on Tumblr, and many of the people who were writing and sharing great meta were also writing fic, and at some point I started thinking, hey, this is a thing I can do. And then I did it, A LOT.

Q: What do you think are some defining aspects of your work? Do you have a style? Recurrent themes?

A: Smut smut and more smut, lol! And sometimes action. I really like writing about intense physical experiences and the emotions they generate. I come from a screenwriting background, so I tend to be terse and am always thinking about how to say the most with the fewest words possible. I love writing characters who find it very hard to talk about their feelings, so Max and Furiosa are pretty much perfect for me.

Q: Which of your works was the most fun to create? The most difficult? Which is your most popular? Most successful? Your favourite overall?

A: Ahhh I can't pick between all of my children! AO3 statistics says Zero to Sixty, my Max-and-Furiosa-get-together fic, is my most popular by hits, kudos and bookmarks, which is not surprising given that it was written early in the fandom. I don't think I can pick a favorite but I have a lot of love for: Desperate Measures, Her Reputation Precedes Her, Hard Run, Tough to be Tender, and Scarf Thing. The only fic I'm still slightly unhappy with: Equinox. I feel like I set up some great tension and then wrapped it up too quickly.

Q: How do you like your wasteland? Gritty? Hopeful? Campy? Soft? Why?

A: Hard but with some humanity left still.

Q: Walk us through your creative process from idea to finished product. What's your prefered environment for creating? How do you get through rough patches?

A: Most of my short pieces are really just a single scene, sometimes with setup and aftermath. Sometimes I'll start with an image (like one of @youkaiyume's excellent smut drawings) or a concept or idea for the scene. Something short, like under 2,000 words, I will ideally sit down and write in one draft, maybe in a day or two. I don't do a lot of drafts, although I do somewhat edit as I go. Something longer like a multi-chapter fic, I usually have a separate Word document with notes and a very rough outline. I usually have the ending or the big climactic scene in my head before I've got everything in the middle figured out. If I'm struggling with something, I'll usually step away and just let my brain chew on it for a while, until I figure out what about it isn't working for me. I learned in grad school that your brain can be doing a lot of creative heavy lifting while you're off doing other things.

Q: What (if any) music do you listen to for help getting those creative juices flowing?

A: I'm not much of a music person, tbh. I have gotten inspiration from fanart, Tumblr submissions and kinkmeme prompts, though.

Q: What is your biggest challenge as a creator?

A: Finding enough time and energy to write. I'm someone who needs big chunks of time to let my brain get into the creative state and this whole having to have a job thing is a real drag.

Q: How have you grown as a creator through your participation in the Mad Max Fandom? How has your work changed? Have you learned anything about yourself?

A: When I saw Fury Road, I had been in a serious writing drought for the better part of a year. I was frustrated and feeling very hopeless about the filmmaking world. Even under the best of conditions, filmmaking is an incredibly slow process with a lot of gatekeepers. Being able to just write something, put it on ao3 and get instant feedback was an incredible breath of fresh air. I remembered my love of writing and found a whole new creative community. I started exploring a new genre, erotica, and learned that I love it. I started writing prose again after a long period of focusing on screenwriting, and gained a new appreciation for what can be done in the short story format.

Q: Which character do you relate to the most, and how does that affect your approach to that character? Is someone else your favourite to portray? How has your understanding of these characters grown through portraying them?

A: Furiosa is the character who lives in my head most vividly. She has a lot of characteristics I tend to put in my original female characters: a certain ruthlessness and hardness; hypercompetence combined with standoffishness punctuated by a few key moments of vulnerability.

Q: Do you ever self-insert, even accidentally?

A: I don't really like talking about characters as self-inserts. I think every character has some part of you in them whether you're aware of it or not.

Q: Do you have any favourite relationships to portray? What interests you about them?

A: Maxiosa for sure. I already had a pattern before Fury Road of writing hard women and caring men, so Furiosa and Max fit right into that. They are both incredibly damaged people who have been the victims and the perpetrators of violence, have a lot of self-loathing, have been isolated in various ways for a long time, and are used to having no one to trust. Bringing those two people together and watching them slowly allow themselves to trust each other is very powerful.

Q: How does your work for the fandom change how you look at the source material?

A: Fury Road is an incredibly rich text and there are so many things that are only hinted at, left unexplained or implied. I've lost count of how many times I've watched it at this point, but there are always more details to notice and spin headcanons about.

Q: Do you prefer to create in one defined chronology or do your works stand alone? Why or why not?

A: For MMFR, I started out writing mostly short smutty one-shots. At a certain point it made sense to start stringing them together, and the ones that take place in the same timeline are now roughly in order in the series Together. It happened organically, though - I tend to write my longer stories non-chronologically anyway, so at some point I realized I was constructing a giant smut novel.

Q: To break or not to break canon? Why?

A: Ehn, I am pretty agnostic on this. Sometimes sticking to canon can be a fun limitation you impose on your story. Other times, ignoring it can be a fun what-if.

Q: Share some headcanons.

A: Ace definitely lived. Nux definitely died historic. Valkyrie is alive in some of my stories and not in others. Dag's baby is a girl and she names her Angharad. Max comes and goes from the Citadel, staying for increasingly longer periods of time. Furiosa often wants to leave, but feels too much responsibility to the new Citadel to ever let herself.

Q: If you work with OCs walk us through your process for creating them. Who are some of your favourites?

A: I haven't created a lot of OCs in the Mad Max world because the canon characters are just so interesting to explore. But when I do they just kind of pop up. Biltong from the story Her Reputation Precedes Her is a personal favorite.

Q: If you create original works, how do those compare to your fan works?

A: My original works are mostly on the action/thriller/horror spectrum. I had never written smut before MMFR, but to me, it's very similar to writing action. You're telling a story through high-intensity physicality and the emotions surrounding it. In my original works, I mostly write female protagonists in high-intensity situations, so it made sense that MMFR would catch my attention.

Q: What are some works by other creators inside and outside of the fandom that have influenced your work?

A: @primarybufferpanel 's Orbit was my fandom gateway drug. @primarybufferpanel, @sacrificethemtothesquid, @lurkinghistoric, @v8roadworrier, @thebyrchentwigges, @thatonezombiecosplayer, @youkaiyume, @ecouter-bien , @bethagain, @fadagaski and @yohunny have all created things that I find inspiring, epic, thrilling, heartbreaking, hot, funny or all of the above. And I'm lucky that I've gotten to know many of them online and in meatspace!

Q: What advice can you give someone who is struggling to make their own works more interesting, compelling, cohesive, etc.?

A: Stop and ask yourself: What does this character want? Why are they doing what they're doing right now? Concretely, what are they trying to achieve? What are the obstacles? What are the consequences if they don't get what they want? If a scene or story isn't working for me, usually it's because I don't know the answer to one of these questions.

Q: Have you visited or do you plan to visit Australia, Wasteland Weekend, or other Mad Max place?

A: I've been to Wasteland Weekend 3 times (2016, '17, '18) with Clan of the Boltcutters, and plan to go again in 2019. It's been so cool watching our camp and the festival grow and change each year. I had never been to anything remotely like Wasteland before I got involved in the Mad Max fandom, and now I can't imagine it not being part of my year. Australia...maybe someday.

Q: Tell us about a current WIP or planned project.

A: While I've been writing in the Venom fandom lately, I do plan to come back at some point and finish Closer, a story I really liked writing that I just haven't gotten time to get back to. I also have a few lingering MMFR projects that will hopefully be completed later this year.

What Even are Jokes?

Millennials - and now, Gen Z - have some weird coping mechanisms.

On a late-night browse through Twitter - which, honestly, tends to stir many ideas - I was reading one-liners and social justice observations while Bad Romance, a podcast about ill-conceived romantic comedies, played in the background. As one of the posts, Jourdain, plaintively asked her boyfriend, "why are you like this," I laughed. It's a favorite memetic joke of mine, and a standard in our household, often repeated when something has gone awry.

Similarly, other simple, despairing cries have become a form of humour - such as the one that inspired the title of this post.

Why are you like this?

A few years ago, it was Generation Y, the Millennials, who were supposed to Save Us All. Whether we do or not, however, it's impossible to deny that Generation Y - most of us barely in our 20s or 30s - are already exhausted.

Fatalistic, often beset by mental health issues, physical health issues, a history of trauma, societal marginalizations, poverty, or often, a combination of these, Millennials have turned to three coping mechanisms - weed, the internet, and each other. Perhaps it's an uncanny combination of all three that's led to a weird comedic renaissance.

Of course, sweeping and broad generalizations have their limits, but suffice to say that I'm talking about concepts that cross and touch on cultural elements from the queer community, the online community of people of colour, the disabled community and autistic community, and other overlapping groups - yes, including straight, cisgender, heterosexual, and white people. Many of us, as I've said, have various struggles right now, but the common language of memes and comedy often unites us.

For the lols

Comedy tends to fall in broad political groups. Those of us on the left try to eschew jokes that play on "punching down" and enforce marginalizing power structures. In search of comedy that doesn't reflect the regressive ethos of the 90s, our era of origin, a strain of Dadaist absurdism has formed the DNA of our comedy.

Millennial jokes and humour really give me pause. There are intricate rules of grammar, both visual and verbal, that must be obeyed for punchlines to land, but it's also easy to form new jokes using or playing on these rules. References to Tide Pods or moral panics of the day, InTenTiOnAlLy PoR oR iNcOmpRehEnSiBle WrItIng, a focus on poor judgement calls, and mental and physical health symptoms all characterize popular topics. GIFS and images - sometimes macros, sometimes on their own - work either as stand-alone punchlines or visual completions of verbal jokes. Some GIFS and images have taken on their own significance, often completely disconnected from the image's original context. Michael Jackson eating popcorn from a scene in the "Thriller" music video indicates an enjoyment of drama ensuing in a conversation thread. Kermit the Frog sipping a cup of Lipton tea indicates a sassy judgement.

Of course, there are many more. Ironic and sarcastic references to educational or edutainment television such as "The More You Know", to childhood favorite cartoons, and even anonymous photographs of strangers' cats can all serve as side-splitting punchlines. References to creative media that cross over with popular aphorisms from Twitter and Tumblr, and sometimes Reddit and Facebook, bleed in and out of fashion. Decontextualizing them for a moment, it's almost baffling or bewildering. Given that much of the humour is highly context-based or simply absurdist, some of it "pure" or "wholesome" (i.e. relying on positive, sweet, or heartwarming experiences) and some of it utterly fatalistic, it can be hard to understand how all of the jokes work, or even why they're important.

A brief history of suicide jokes

But very noticeable is the prevalence of jokes about death, suicide, and existentialism. Multiple media outlets have been horrified and fascinated and wagged their fingers at us for this type of humour.

However, these jokes were also very common during and just after the Great Depression - as demonstrated in a plethora of classic cartoons.

I think there's a sort of nihilistic argument that at least suicide restores a sense of control, and in a world where the climate crisis' impact is more visible than ever, where chronic mental health problems are an epidemic, and where access to medical care or time off for sickness is rarer and harder to get than it has been in decades (well, stable in its awfulness in some cases), maybe people feel like suicide is the one way to take things back. Maybe it's a way to make the very real possibility of succumbing to depression or other illnesses a bit less scary - whistling in the dark, as some writers used to call it. Absurdist things also tend to play into this. If we can't ignore our demons, perhaps we can befriend them.

Is it okay?

Honestly, I was stumped about what all of this means. Why do Millennials turn to humour like this to survive? What does it provide for us? My partner had a wry insight into the vital role comedy is playing in our survival. "Humour at times like this is an important act of balancing that allows us to reject the horrible situation we live with, while still existing in it. We have been told to accept what we have to pay bills and get by, but this balancing act allows us to not accept it, but live with and cope with it," he pointed out.

It also serves the role of a shibboleth, a passcode or phrase of recognition. Users of Tumblr, Twitter, and even Facebook become fluent in both memes from within their communities and outside them. For instance, members of politically conservative tribes (in the ethno-cultural sense of the word "tribe") are extremely fond of the Minions from the "Despicable Me" series, to the extent that Minions have developed their own independent associations.

On the other hand, certain phrases, such as a "good good [adjective or noun] boy" to describe a creature, object, or person of which the speaker approves, evolved out of the My Brother, My Brother, and Me podcast, but has a simple structure that makes it easy to replicate. Even without the original context of the show, the structure of the phrase has an inherent appeal and comedic elegance that gives it broad applicability to a variety of situations.

It's not as bad as it looks

Honestly? Any coping mechanism can be bad for one if it's used in place of self-improvement, but it's impossible to miss the sweeping waves of therapist jokes that have also taken over the internet. And maybe that's a good sign.

The key is to turn our jokes and fears into action. I'm not finished feeling shocked by how effective direct local action is compared to arguing on the internet. Using online connections to build local friendships and develop solidarity both far and nearby is really important, and for those who can't afford therapy, the support of friends really helps recovery.
