a sketch i've been sitting on! i wanted to redraw this panel 'cause i don't like how they did sally's reaction here.
longer explanation here ⬇ tl;dr: early archie writing is so bad to sally's character
i've still working my way through reading all the early archie comics, as i'm sure i've mentioned somewhere before! the b-plot in the brave new world era about the source of all and king acorn establishing geoffrey's secret service is pretty unbearable imo. the secret service is just... not... interesting... literally ALL they serve to do is undermine sally's authority as a leader, all while king acorn basically just tells her "cope lol". her reaction in this issue (sth 64, i believe?) is totally warranted! and yet, for whatever reason here, she's drawn like a child throwing a fit! yeah, i'm not into it haha. the dialogue is still kinda bad (penders moment) but i wanted to show how much just changing her pose and expression could do to frame her frustration in a justified lens.
ignore. the comic sans i KNOW i know i need to download better fonts for csp

“BOUND FOR FREEDOM, YEAR FIVE, DAY FIVE: “Gift”
“The Greatest Gift”
"Alright, Sal, what's the occasion?"
Sonic held the small box in his hands, observing it with a wry expression. "Who says I need an occasion to give you a present?" Sally asked bemusedly.
Sonic rattled the box a little, surprised at just how light it felt. "All I know is, the last time I asked you t'bring me back a souvenir from one of your solo missions, you said, and I quote, 'your head's big enough as it is'," he chuckled.
To Sonic's surprise, Sally's face sobered then. "...there's no special occasion," she said softly. "Just...a bit of a special case." She put her hand to the box. "Go on. Open it."
"...OK, but if this is, like, a stink-bomb or something..." Sonic started to say, even as he obeyed Sally's instruction and lifted the lid off the box.
Whatever quippy retort he'd been planning to finish his sentence with died the moment he saw what was inside.
For once in his life, Sonic was utterly speechless. There, sitting inside the box, was a very familiar photograph. Its edges were frayed, its surface worn, but the image at its center was one the hedgehog could never forget. He took the picture into his hand so gently it was if he feared it might evaporate at the slightest mistouch. "...Sal..." he finally whispered, "where...how did you find this?"
"When I was in Robotropolis," she replied, stepping closer to Sonic to take a look at the picture herself, "I stumbled across a small underground room that had been built over by Robotnik's construction. Who knows how this wound up there, but..."
She leaned into Sonic just a little, the both of them gazing warmly at the picture.
There they were in its frame, so young and care-free. Behind them was Uncle Chuck, laughing at just how energetically the two kids were playing off of each other, and King Acorn, looking quite fondly at his daughter and her friend. "...when I saw it, I knew you'd want to have it. Not that you need the photo to remember, obviously."
"S'nice t'have, though," Sonic said, and for once his voice was quite gentle. "Nice t'be able t'just...hold it."
So they stood there together, photo in hand, and remembered that long-ago moment when the world had felt so open and bright. When their lives had become just a little fuller, a little more joyous.
When they'd met for the first time.

Tails: Silver the Hedgehog, take it away from him!
Silver: Alright! *clenches his shining fists*
Gold: Wait Silver, don't you think something seems wrong?
Silver: Tails is asking me to fight! D'you think I'm gonna waste this chance?

I judged King Acorn, Robotnik, and Sally as well as the civilizations they lead based on what I've gathered from SATAM and what I've read of the Archie comics so far.
Robotnik's the most clean-cut and obvious of them, King Acorn's a train wreck, and Sally's based but confused.
I guess the reason why Sally and King Acorn are so messy is due to differences in the writers, plus I'm pretty sure a company in the 90's wouldn't want their brand to be associated with communism, even if it's accidental, so the rebel commune had to be lib'd-down a bit.
