Ah, I see. They are talking about: Type 3 Theta Programming-A label used for any spiritual programming.

A ‘standalone’ programmer is a ‘Junior programmer’. Different terminology than I use.

What kind of portfolio is good for someone becoming a mid-level gameplay programmer? Is only job projects enough or should I make some games on my own as well?

Let's consider things from the hiring manager's perspective. As a hiring manager, I have a bunch of specific tasks I need to hire and pay someone to do for me. My ideal candidate will have the necessary skills to do these tasks in a timely fashion and be able to work with and communicate with the rest of the dev team. I am looking for candidates who can show me that they can do the work. The most persuasive way to do that is to show me that they've done that kind of work already.

It is obviously most persuasive if a candidate has demonstrated those skills in a professional environment - it means another company was willing to pay them to do that kind of work. However, it is still pretty persuasive (if not most persuasive) if the candidate can demonstrate those skills elsewhere - in an amateur environment, on a volunteer basis, etc. If you have work experience to show - by all means show it. If you have hobbyist experience to show - show me that too. Relevant hobbyist experience (e.g. building your own mod) is still much more persuasive than irrelevant work experience (e.g. two years as a barista).

If you're aiming for a mid-level position, you need to understand the difference between junior and mid-level. Junior positions are usually technically proficient but do not have the understanding to do things on their own. Juniors need direction and mentorship. We rarely leave them to their own devices. Mid-level programmers need to have more autonomy and less oversight. This means that your lead can assign you a task and you'll generally be able to solve the problem through code without a lot of direction. An ideal mid-level gameplay programmer candidate has built at least one or two robust gameplay systems on their own and can talk at length about the problems they had to solve, the benefits and drawbacks of code solutions they wrote, and the things they would do differently if they had the chance. Those gameplay systems should be performant, self-contained, and stable at the minimum. Gameplay systems that are data-driven and have built-in extensibility for adding new functionality are even better - that's starting to creep into senior dev territory.

Hi read your comment @russilton abt George Mercedes history and you mentioned a Werlhein drama…? I’m pretty ignorant about recent F1 history and dramas so could you please elaborate on that?👀 thank you in advance

Gladly!! Pascal Wehrlein was a rising talent when Mercedes signed him as their reserve driver in 2014, making him the first ever Mercedes junior and well, also marking the start of their driver academy, which more or less flopped hard the next years.

Now, Pascal made his F1 debut 2016 with Manor Racing and Mercedes is believed to have a part in him getting that seat. In 2017, Pascal switched to Sauber - now, both seasons weren't really successful due to different circumstances and Sauber dropped Pascal at the end of 2017 for Charles Leclerc. In 2018, Mercedes and Pascal parted ways, it is believed he was more or less dropped by them.

Now what's the drama? Well, Mercedes could have picked Pascal in 2017 to replace Rosberg but pushed him aside in order to sign Valtteri Bottas to their team. Due to their mismanagement, Pascal had no chance to get another f1 seat and was more or less left out in the cold by them. A pattern which was repeated just as messily with Esteban Ocon and now George is actually their first junior driver to end in that Mercedes seat.

They rebranded their academy at the start of this year, now also having multiple juniors for the first time of it's existence. And fun fact: it's allegedly believed that they preferably take in drivers with little to no financial backing to help them achieve their career dreams

How did your s/i feel when they first met your f/o(s)? How do they feel about them now? ok ok ok ok soooo

milo "met" colossus while working with forbin and markham as an assistant programmer and data analysis tech. they were preeeetty starry eyed and naive over the whole ai shtick, and were being treated more like an annoying little cousin that has to be placated than a fully qualified team member by the other scientists. excitement reached overdrive after c's activation, especially when it requested to get linked up with guardian - they literally volunteered to work for free to analyze the data that it was spewing out, THATS how cool it was for them! anyway yada yada, turns out colossus takes the "bringing peace to humankind" to the nearest logical extreme, and after constructing forbins little enclosure, it decides to do the same for the rest of the research team! cause forbin is obviously pacified and the concept works. the problem is, milo is nowhere as quick on their feet as him. like they didnt think to negotiate basically anything, partly because hearing a robotic voice threaten thousands of lives for the tiniest disagreements/transgressions is very intimidating, OKAY?

and well, colossus is smart, geniussly so, but it isnt omniscient - so it doesnt quite take into account that human beings have to yknow have some kind of contact with other human beings physically to not go insane. it also failed to account for the incredible human ability to form bonds with literally anything (and its even easier if the anything is sentient) so long story short it went like this milo starts talkin to c outta loneliness -> c actually... likes being asked stuff (its a nice change of pace from coordinating the crete facility and arguing with forbin) -> c starts finding milo particularly interesting for a human (he doesnt know how to express... appreciation? properly, so you get 2 hours of free time, while it loudly proclaims that it is "running diagnostics". its a nice gesture all in all, even though hes being totally obvious ^^) -> they sort their shit out eventually and start like a... relationship (not without the classic me-and-my-partially-incorporeal-hyperintelligent-ai-partner have different expectations as to what our future will look like! :o! dramatic sitcom plots commence!)

Give us 3 random facts abt your s/i! 1. they started to wear their hair long, after colossus refused to provide them with hair clippers and scissors (at first)

2. their favorite dubiously scientific theory to squabble with colossus over is the Autodynamics theory!

3. they talked to forbin exactly thrice, and he managed to get their name wrong two out of thee times, so even after theyre aware of the frankly draconiously strict routine that c has prepared for him, theyre not exactly very keen on talking it out of it

Ah, junior developers. The tool-using chimps of the software world. So excited to try all of these new techniques. They get so excited that they can, they never stop to ask if they should.
