🦁 I based my drawing of Lambert on (once again) another Milt Kahl drawing. Kahl didn’t animate on the short, but helped refine the final design of Lambert. As Andreas Deja said in a blog post, “I see a foreshadowing of Tigger in the first sheet. Beautiful squash and stretch in his face. Wonderful gutsy drawings”. Bill Peet was the main storyboard artist of the 1952 Disney short, “Lambert the Sheepish Lion”, which is definitely a cute story, beautifully narrated by Sterling Holloway, who also reprised his role as Mr. Stork from “Dumbo”. Animators Eric Larson, John Lounsbery, Judge Whitaker, and Don Lusk were the animators who animated the characters. 🐑🐾

In those 50 seconds he was on screen I thought DT played Jodie Whitaker playing the Doctor, not so much ten. Granted, Jodie sometimes played it very similarly but she does have some facial ticks that DT repeated in the skit. Also calling everyone friends. Judging by trailer at least prob Donna brings out more ten out of him in eps proper...
I haven’t seen Jodie’s doctor but I think it’s probably that there are some doctor-isms that run through the character no matter what. I guess we’ll see!

Sola Scriptura
Tumblr media
by William Whitaker
If he feign another rule of faith besides the written word of God, we reject, repudiate, and refuse to acknowledge any such, and reduce the whole rule of the catholic faith to the scripture alone.
…Faith, therefore, is not the gift of the church, except improperly and in a mere ministerial capacity; but it is properly and necessarily the gift and effect of the Holy Spirit speaking through the scriptures. The sum of the matter is this: faith is produced by scripture alone; therefore the true sense of scripture is to be discovered from the scripture itself alone.
Our third argument stands thus: The supreme judge of controversies and legitimate interpreter of scripture should have these three properties: the first is, that we should certainly know that the sentence which he delivers is true, and that we can acquiesce in it; the second, that no appeal from that sentence shall be lawful; the third, that he be influenced by no partiality. Now the church or the pope possess none of these; whereas the scripture, and the Holy Spirit speaking in the scripture, have them all. Therefore the supreme decision is to be given to them, and not to the church or the pope. The major is self-evident. The minor, namely, that none of these properties exist in any visible church or in the pope, is clear also.

Jennifer Jason Leigh and Phoebe Cates in Fast Times at Ridgemont High (Amy Heckerling, 1982)
Cast: Sean Penn, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Judge Reinhold, Robert Romanus, Brian Backer, Phoebe Cates, Ray Walston, Vincent Schiavelli, Forest Whitaker. Screenplay: Cameron Crowe, based on his book. Cinematography: Matthew F. Leonetti. Art director: Daniel A. Lomino.
Of the few standouts in the teen comedy genre, Fast Times at Ridgemont High is the one most loved by that pig in the python, the Baby Boomers. It's not as nostalgic as the granddaddy of the genre, American Graffiti (George Lucas, 1973), or as smart as Dazed and Confused (Richard Linklater, 1993), or as savagely witty as Tina Fey's Mean Girls (Mark Waters, 2004). It's not even as cleverly conceived as director Amy Heckerling's other major outing in the genre, Clueless (1995). But it is the one most frank about teenage sexuality, especially in the relationship between Jennifer Jason Leigh's Stacy and Phoebe Cates's Linda, in which the supposedly "experienced" Linda serves as the virginal Stacy's mentor. The film also admirably confronts the question of abortion straightforwardly: Stacy has one and suffers no lasting trauma. Instead the condemnation lands on the guy, Mike Damone (Robert Romanus), whose callous treatment of Stacy is devastatingly portrayed. Otherwise, Fast Times is best seen as a landmark in the careers of future Oscar winners Sean Penn, Forest Whitaker, and Nicolas Cage (who has a small part billed as "Brad's Bud" under the name Nicolas Coppola), and as a demonstration of the skill of someone who has always deserved the Oscar she hasn't won, namely Jennifer Jason Leigh. The cast also features future big names like Eric Stolz and Anthony Edwards in small roles, and gave a brief boost to the career of Judge Reinhold that flared in the mid-1980s and then fizzled. But while Fast Times at Ridgemont High is never quite the "scuz-pit" that Roger Ebert, on an off night, saw it as, it hasn't worn very well. The acting is sometimes just this side of amateurish and the blend of the seriousness of Stacy's scenes with the more familiar classroom comedy involving Spicoli (Penn) and Mr. Hand (Ray Walston) lacks finesse. While the movie has a slight feminist edge in its treatment of sex, it also involves some gratuitous breast-baring on the part of Leigh and Cates.

The Crying Game (1992)
Picture that it’s 2004, the height of Blockbuster Video and it’s another day of renting movies for the week. One title you keep hearing about is “The Crying Game” and not so much for the film itself, but for the plot twist. The internet wasn’t as full blown as it is today so you wonder what everyone was talking about a decade earlier. You watch the film and then you don’t care about the twist, and you get into the story, the characters and how everything will resolve itself. That week I rented “The Crying Game”, I did something I never did before and that was watch the film twice during the rental. 18 years later and about 30 viewings later, this film has become an all time favorite of mine and has opened my eyes to how flexible a film could be and the many possibilities it can take.
Tumblr media
The film opens with a British soldier named Jody (Forest Whitaker), who is kidnapped and held hostage by an IRA ring led by Jude (Miranda Richardson) and Maguire (Adrian Dunbar). Both of them are uncaring and ruthless, but it’s underling Fergus (Stephen Rea) that winds up befriending the hostage, who’s days away from possibly being executed. Jody tells Fergus about his life on the outside, with his girlfriend Dil (Jaye Davidson), a London hairdresser. When Jody dies in a botched escape, Fergus tracks Dil down to her London neighborhood, and the two become romantically entangled. Jude and Maguire, in turn track Fergus down themselves and try to rope him into a plot to assassinate a judge, but Fergus is torn between his love and care for Dil and his allegiance to the IRA. Which direction will he take?
Tumblr media
Writer and director Neil Jordan was the best possible person to be at the wheel for this film, which if in other hands might have turned into a convoluted B or C-grade dud. Jordan divides the film into three parts that are so intricate in style, mood and genre that you think you’re watching three different movies. The first part is a chamber piece between hostage and captor. The second part is a romantic drama that is subtle in its subject. Finally, the film turns into a thriller with a gratifying climax and then the coda returns to the themes of the opener. Jordan segues through each portion flawlessly and the seams don’t show because the story is that involved and deep where you pay attention to every detail. In my case, with each subsequent viewing, I’m just as enthralled by the screenwriting and the requirements of each character in relation to the plot. This is why “The Crying Game” had to win Best Original Screenplay, not because of the famous plot twist, which plays no crucial role in the unfolding events, but because of its unique method of putting the plot together.
Tumblr media
“The Crying Game” was Stephen Rea’s introduction to American audiences and he gives the best performance of his long career as Fergus. He makes the biggest shift in maturity, from a mindless follower to a somewhat reformed man. Miranda Richardson, who I think is one of the greatest actresses of the last 40 years, is simply superb as Jude. Not many films have a female villain and especially one like Jude that has no feeling or empathy. Richardson personifies Jude’s evil to a T, from pistol whipping Jody to intimidating Fergus and Dil outside the bar. The very underrated Adrian Dunbar is also excellent as Maguire, with a more muted evil to his demeanor, a contrast to his supporting role in “A World Apart”. Forest Whitaker, though only on screen for the first half hour, makes his short time on screen count for something. Jody is a regular person caught up in the worst possible situation and Whitaker holds nothing back. And then there’s Jaye Davidson, who steals the show as Dil, a character that seems normal and hardworking, but there’s something hidden that we the audience want to know.
Tumblr media
The drawback of “The Crying Game” is that during its release in the US, the subject of the twist was turned into a late night punchline. Many people didn’t care what the film was about, and just wanted to pay money to see what the fuss was about. I would like to think that out of all the people that went in with their mind on the joke, the majority came out enthralled with their lower jaw agape at the complexity of the film. The twist only takes up a scintilla of time, and before you know it, you’ve forgotten what it was. That’s another reason why the film won Best Original Screenplay. Jordan is telling you to look here, and then does a complete 180 by giving the audience their money’s worth with the climax that really should’ve been what people were talking about. “Don’t see it for the twist, see it for the resolution.”
Tumblr media
Despite the manufactured joke, “The Crying Game” was a box office smash and a major contender at that years Oscars, scoring nominations for Best Picture, acting nods for Rea and Davidson and Best Director, apart from its Screenplay win. I would’ve nominated Richardson for Best Supporting Actress for “The Crying Game” instead of her one scene standout performance in “Damage” that same year. I think she would’ve won if the nomination was changed. It’s probably her most rich and flawless performance in her long career along with “Tom and Viv”. “The Crying Game” is a representation of a time when filmmakers took chances on their movies and stood out, something that is very lacking today, where 90% of the mainstream award winning films are homogenized mush. People will remember “The Crying Game” for years down the road, can you say the same thing about the past few Best Picture winners?

A fresh layer of snow fell overnight, and the temps had fallen into the low thirties. You took a pic and sent it to Jake. 'Fresh snow and cold temps this morning. Wish you were next to me keeping me warm.'
You get dressed for work, even though you were going to court. You wore long underwear under your khaki 5.11 cargo pants, long sleeve dark green DNR shirt and black winter work boots. You buckled your black duty belt and strapped your leg holster around your right leg as you walked into your office and into the closet. There you walked to your steel gun cabinet, typed in the code to open it and too out your .45 Glock 21. You secured your Glock in your leg holster and placed your two spare magazines on your bullet proof vest. The magazine you used in your Glock was out in your truck along with your shot gun and rifle. You tried not to have loaded weapons around Christian.
You secured your gun safe, grabbed your vest, walked out of the closet and headed to the kitchen where Christian sat in his highchair eating breakfast with Montgomery.
Tumblr media
"Thank you, Montgomery."
"It's no problem, Doctor. Miss Abigail deserves a vacation."
You look at him. "You know, you're welcome to take a vacation too."
"Doctor. You and Christian are the only family I have."
You nod understandingly as you place your vest on the back of the kitchen bar char and walk over to Christian in the highchair. "You behave for Montgomery."
"Gumree," Christian repeats as he stuffs his mouth with toast, and you kiss his forehead.
You grab your winter DNR coat and put it on along with your beanie hat. You grab your vest off of the chair. "I'm not sure when I'll be home. I'm even afraid to see my desk."
"No worries. We'll be okay."
"Okay. See you guys later. Love you, C.J." You blow Christian a kiss.
"Lub you, Mommy." Chrisitan blows you a kiss back.
You walk to the mudroom that led to the garage.

Judge Arnold Krawczak looked at his watch from his bench as you and Whitaker sat behind the attorney table to the right of the judge's bench.
"I'll give them five more..." Judge Krawczak stopped as the doors to the courtroom opened.
Celine walked behind two attorneys. Dressed as though she was a movie star from Hollywood.
"We apologize, Your Honor," the attorney dressed in the gray suit said as they got behind the other attorney's desk. "Traffic was horrendous!"
Judge Krawczak raised an eyebrow quizzically along with you and Mr. Whitaker.
"Mister...?"
"Attorney Nathan Crawley and Attorney Justin Dodge, Your Honor."
You and Whitaker looked at each other.
"Mister Crawly, let's get this started since you've already waisted 10 minutes of my morning."
"Yes, Your Honor." He opened his briefcase and took out some papers. "We're here to contest the restraining order Mrs. Y/N Astor has placed on Ms. Celine Astor-Davenport."
Whitaker stood up and cleared his throat. "Excuse me, Your Honor. My client's name is Doctor Y/N Astor. As of Wednesday, last week, it's Doctor Y/N Astor-Seresin or Doctor Y/N Seresin. She deserves that respect."
"Agreed. She will be addressed as such."
Celine's attorney glared at her, and she just shrugged.
"Again, I apologize, Your Honor." He paused. "We're here to contest the restraining order Doctor Y/N Astor-Seresin placed on my client, Celine Astor-Davenport. We're also contesting the marriage."
Judge Krawczak sighed. "Let's start with the restraining order."
"Christian Astor Junior is Mrs. Astor-Davenport's only grandchild. She has the right to see her only grandchild."
"Agreed. Mr. Whitaker?"
"We also agree, Your Honor, but supervised. Per the contract Christian Astor and Charles Astor left behind, Mrs. Astor-Davenport cannot be trusted."
"I object, Your Honor!" Crawley intejected.
"Mr. Whitaker, please explain?"
"Due to Christian Junior being the sole heir to the Astor fortune, Mrs. Astor-Davenport cannot be trusted due to financial issues. Both Christian and Charles expressed that in their Wills. Hence why we recommend supervised visitation."
"After reading the Wills, I agree."
"What!?" Celine scoffed loudly.
"Mrs. Astor-Davenport. Another outburst and you'll be held in contempt." Judge Krawczak looked at Attorney Crawley. "Next subject."
"Uhm, we're contesting her current marriage."
Judge Krawczak sighed. "Mr. Crawly. Doctor Astor-Seresin is an adult. According to her previous marriage, she knew Christian Astor only three weeks before they eloped and were married for 3 years. I trust Doctor Astor-Seresin's judgement. Let's get real, Mr. Crawley." Judge Krawczak looked at both attorneys. "If that is all, court is adjourned." He beat his gavel, stood up and walked to his chambers.
Celine glared at you. "This isn't over." She walked away with her attorneys.
Whitaker shook his head as he watched Celine walk away. "That woman." He looks at you. "Come on, Y/N. Let's get out of here."
You leave the courthouse and go out to your work truck where you open the door and get in. Your phone dings that you got a text and you look at it after you start the engine.

'Me too, Darlin,' Jake responded.

Ron DeSantis takes his drag ban to the U.S. Supreme Court
On Tuesday, the DeSantis administration’s obsession with “lewd exposure” and “prosthetic or imitation genitals or breasts” made it to the U.S. Supreme Court. Florida’s solicitor general filed an emergency request to narrow the scope of a district court ruling that blocked the Republican-led state’s notorious ban on drag performance, formally known as the Protection of Children Act. Related: 200,000 people showed up for Orlando Pride in defiant middle finger to Ron DeSantis An 11-year-old transgender girl was the parade Grand Marshal. Justice Clarence Thomas will hear the request. Get the Daily Brief The news you care about, reported on by the people who care about you: Subscribe to our Newsletter In a 167-page filing defending the legislation, signed into law in May by DeSantis and blocked by the district court in June, Solicitor General Henry Whitaker claimed the state was now “powerless to enforce a law its elected representatives have enacted for the protection of its children.” The ban allows the state Department of Business and Professional Regulation to revoke the business licenses of any venues that allow minors to see drag performances, even if their parents consent, as well as issue $5,000 and $10,000 fines against the business. Anyone who violates the law can be charged with a criminal misdemeanor. Days after DeSantis signed the bill into law, restaurant and bar Hamburger Mary’s in Orlando, well-known for their drag-attired waitstaff, sued over the legislation. In June, U.S. District Judge Gregory Presnell temporarily blocked the ban in anticipation of a trial, writing that the Protection of Children Act posed a threat to constitutionally protected free speech. “The state claims that this statute seeks to protect children generally from obscene live performances. However, as explained [in court filings], Florida already has statutes that provide such protection.” Florida is now asking the Supreme Court to allow it to partially enforce the ban, arguing for the ability to prosecute any business or venue it deems to be in violation of the law, other than Hamburger Mary’s. Two weeks ago, the Atlanta-based 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the district court ruling and affirmed the injunction would apply to the entire state. The 11th Circuit wrote of the ban, “There is a potential for extraordinary harm and a serious chill upon protected speech” if left in effect. That assertion has been borne out as threats of enforcement in the state led to self-censorship at previously scheduled Pride celebrations and drag events, even as others have marched in drag in defiance.   “No prosecutions have yet been undertaken under the law,” the court wrote, “so none will be disrupted if the injunction stands. Further, if the injunction is upheld, the government in the interim can enforce obscenity laws already on the books.” Yet the DeSantis administration remains determined to prosecute. “Hamburger Mary’s has not alleged, much less proven, that application of the Protection of Children Act to others in the State of Florida will cause actual or imminent injury to Hamburger Mary’s itself,” the state wrote in the emergency appeal. “It was a serious error for the district court nonetheless to enjoin the statute as it may apply to the rest of the world.” DeSantis has signed a slew of anti-LGBTQ+ bills since announcing his run for the Republican nomination for president, including a ban on gender-affirming care for trans youth, an expanded version of his signature “Don’t Say Gay” legislation, and bills that have led Florida schools and libraries to purge LGBTQ+ content from shelves.  http://dlvr.it/SxybS4

New Block judge Marty Fox predicts Qld’s next big boom
New Block judge Marty Fox has predicted Queensland’s property market will boom again in four years, driven by “pent-up demand” as the supply of new homes being built fails to keep pace with interstate migration.
One of Melbourne’s top deal-makers and the founder of WhiteFox Real Estate, Fox is also an auctioneer and serial house flipper who joins the cast of Channel 9’s popular renovation show alongside Shaynna Blaze, Darren Palmer and Neale Whitaker.
The Block’s new season is set in the Melbourne suburb of Hampton East and goes to air in August.
