Last but not least, here is Beth March. She is an American Girl CYO, purchased gently used on eBay. She looks exactly as I have always pictured Beth, who has always been my favorite of the March sisters. She is wearing a dress by Etsy seller Threads of Silk and is pictured alongside Josefina’s English square piano. Her kitten is from Kirsten’s collection, and her china head doll was purchased on eBay

Josefina’s release (followed of course by getting a Josefina doll) was probably the most thrilling moment of my childhood. She was the last doll to come out while I was still playing with dolls, and I loved her!
Josefina is wearing a style of outfit called a “China Poblana,” which is named for a possibly apocryphal woman who was brought to the city of Pueblo as a slave from China. She refused to adopt the Mexican garb of the day and proudly continued to wear her Asian garb. Today you mostly see it worn during festivals, so modern Chinas Poblanas tend to be very colorful and fancy.

The China Poblana is considered the national dress of Mexico, often appearing in nostalgic art and advertising:

A lot of Josefina’s collection seems to have been heavily inspired by the art of Jose Augustín Arrieta, and her Meet looks in particular seems to have been inspired by this painting:

Josefina’s BeForever Meet look actually isn’t terrible, but the rebozo goes from having a lovely diamond pattern to no pattern, a huge downgrade.

My Josefina is all cleaned up! I washed her clothes, wiped her skin, and brushed and rebraided her hair. She’s looking very fresh and absolutely lovely!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also, I adore her hair! It’s by far the longest of any of my girls’, and it’s so rich and dark. I like how it’s very deep brown and not just straight black, which I wouldn’t have guessed!

3/19/2024: Happy birthday, Josefina!
Here she is in her Feast Day Finery (sans ribbons), just looking beautiful.
To celebrate her birthday, she invited Rebecca and Melody to hang out - and to introduce their pets to her goat, Sombrita. Rebecca brought her kittens and Melody brought her dog Bo (short for Bojangles).
Rebecca is wearing an off-brand dupe of her Lace Dress; Melody is wearing her Fancy Floral Dress.

Exciting Josefina Treasure Hunt
Tumblr media
I bought the most amazing lot from goodwill last week. This trunk was the feature piece, and opening it was so fun because the pictures were a particular brand of AWFUL so there were a lot of surprises inside.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lot of food stuffs from both the Christmas and Winter collections. This silver tray I thought at first was just a random extra, but luckily there were a few of the cookies which gave me a clue to look at the Bizcochitos set, and sure enough, the tray is part of it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Some of the random clothing items. There was a second lot from the same goodwill that had more clothes (including more of some of these outfits) but it went for a bundle too so I didn't also get it. The black socks from Josefina's Winter set are like legit wool (feeling?) and heavy.
Tumblr media
This turtle that goes on eBay for like 70 bucks someone please explain THAT one to me.

These!! The box for the farm was just visible in the listing, but only the outside so I had no idea if there was anything in there, and the desk wasn't even in any of the photos! And they are both complete, the desk has her entire school lesson even the quill.
Tumblr media
The sheet music from her piano!!! I couldn't believe it.
Tumblr media
On the right in this photo, is the door from the oven and a tiny piece of fluff. Which luckily had a PC tag on the back so I didn't toss it immediately. Because when I looked up to make sure this was the door from the oven, the little fluff was in the photo too! And I remembered the story of putting the wool on the paddle to check if the oven was ready. I had no idea they actually sold it. And how it hasn't gotten lost.
Do you think the person who owned this owned a complete set of Josefina's things?? There is almost something from everything, (except the furniture, but evidence for the piano at least). Anyway, what a fun treasure box to open!
I will definitely be selling the farm and desk, as I already own those (baby!Caroline made at least a few smart choices about what she wanted). I haven't really decided on anything else yet. Let me know if you're super interested in something.

Josefina’s birthday dress is a style nowadays called the Adelita, which was a nickname given to soldaderas of the Mexican revolution. Today, it is traditionally worn with a sombrero by horsewomen at charrerias:

Or with additional fabric added to the skirt of folklorico dancing:

The shawl is a kind of shawl called a manton de Manila. It is a Spanish garment with Chinese embroidery, with the two cultures brought together in The Phillipines. These shawls are also referred to as piano shawls, because they’re so big they were often used as piano coverings.

Black lace fans are an essential part of Spanish flamenco ensemble, and an important thing to have for Spanish young ladies. The ribs were typically made of mother-of-pearl or tortoiseshell, and the lace was black French chantilly.

The pendant looks like it might be imitating Mexican gold filigree pendants, but on a doll-sized scale:

Goldsmithing is another pre-hispanic tradition in Oaxaca. Indigenous Oaxacans combined their talents with Spanish filigree designs to create their own unique form of jewelry. With gold and emeralds coming from Colombia, Spain saw an abundance of jewelry being made in the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries, but it dried up once its colonies began declaring independence.

I was too busy this month to take pictures, but Addy and Josefina will be hanging out in their fall looks a bit more before they change into their Christmas look.
Claudie, on the other hand, is ready to change into her red Christmas dress!!

I recently found Josefina at a thrift store for $35! She even had her necklace, pouch, coin, and hankie.
When I saw her across the store, standing on the top shelf of a display, it was like a dream. I was so excited to see a familiar face! She stayed tucked safely under my arm for the rest of the shopping trip.
She is a little dusty, but she is in amazing shape overall! I am absolutely thrilled to have her as I never really expected to ever get a Josefina.
Stay tuned for photos after I wash her clothes and give her a little bit of a bath.
