Note
are there any specific books or sources you recommend for reading some of the original Filipino folklore that the podcast draws from?
Sort of! A lot of the sources are just osmosis and having your family tell you the stories from childhood. There's many different versions of the same creature, so there's no decisive Wrong Version of something passed down through generations. Listening to collections of horror stories from Filipinos is a fun way to know how the living folklore affects Filipinos in modern day.
But in terms of resources that are accessible, The Aswang Project does the most research and compiles info online. It's headed by a white Canadian, not a Filipino, but Jordan Clark has been a great friend and supporter of Filipino work surrounding folklore and mythology, and he does very thorough research and does the difficult task of hunting down primary and secondary sources for scattered myths and folklore.
He recently edited a new printing + English translation of Ferdinand Blumentritt's Diccionario Mitologico De Filipinas, which is a sort of dictionary of Filipino mythology from all the way back in 1895, written by Jose Rizal's BFF Ferdinand Blumentritt.
I like to joke that it's appropriate this important Filipino resource written by a white guy who was passionate about Filipino culture was resurrected and rereleased by a white guy who's passionate about Filipino culture.
Jordan sent me a copy for free! Super nice of him.
For direct Filipino sources, it's difficult since a lot of the academic sources are scattered or not widely distributed.
Here's a few options:
Check out the Ayala Museum shop, they sell a few books centred on Filipino history, culture and mythology.
The Soul Book: Introduction to Philippine Pagan Religion is another one (it's available on the Internet Archive).
The Creatures of Philippine Lower Mythology, as well as other works by Maximo D Ramos, are also available online.
Disclaimer: I'm no expert, though I have been delving into Filipino folklore for years for my storytelling. Folk beliefs are a living thing in the Philippines, built on decades upon centuries of culture, but not as many people write this stuff down.
I usually just go with what I know, but when I need inspiration or to double check my sources I use Aswang Project or the Diccionario.
Also - there's no Original Sources for most of these. That's what happens when colonisation wipes out most older folk beliefs. What's survived has often been what the friars wrote down and that current historians have been able to salvage.

29 February 2024: King Abdullah II said Maan is a gateway of goodwill and the launching point of the Jordanian state’s establishment.
Speaking at a meeting with local community leaders and figures in Maan held at the Founding King’s Residence and attended by Crown Prince Hussein, His Majesty praised the authentic values embodied by the people of Maan in welcoming pilgrims on the Hajj route, and their keenness to help everyone in need.
The King recalled his visit to Maan 25 years ago, saying residents’ first request was building a university in the governorate.
Today, Al Hussein bin Talal University has ushered in Maan’s development, His Majesty added.
The King said Maan is home to the largest solar energy projects in Jordan, as well as other projects, noting that the ambition for this governorate is to attract more investments, expand development, and capitalise on tourism potential in Petra.
His Majesty also spoke about the dangerous situation in Gaza, stressing that Jordan is exerting its utmost efforts to stop the war on the Strip.
The Kingdom will continue to provide support and humanitarian aid by land and air, with priority given to the north of Gaza, the King continued, stressing that Jordan will not pay attention to the sceptics.
Commenting on the airdrops that Jordan has carried out, His Majesty said Jordan has encouraged Arab and friendly countries to take part in these operations, to support Gazans and alleviate their suffering.
The King thanked Gazans who expressed appreciation for Jordan, although the aid delivered so far is limited due to the current situation in the Strip.
The most important thing in these efforts is for Gazans to feel that Jordan is with them and will spare no effort to help, His Majesty reaffirmed.
For his part, Maan Governor Faisal Masaeed said His Majesty’s Silver Jubilee is a continuation of the Hashemite journey of progress and development for Jordan.
The governor said Maan witnessed over the past 25 years several Royal initiatives and achievements in vital sectors, including health, education, agriculture, tourism, social care, and income-generating projects, as well as the enhancement of the role of women and youth, and empowering civil society organisations.
Upon arrival at the Founding King’s Residence prior to the meeting, the King was welcomed by the Maan Folklore Band.
His Majesty toured the Founding King’s Residence and was briefed on the project to restore it as a museum and a building of great historical value related to the establishment of the Jordanian state.
The building was originally a station on the Hijaz Railway, built in 1904, and became the residence of King Abdullah I (Prince Abdullah then) when he came to the city on 21 November 1920, and the building was called “the National Defence Headquarters”.
During the meeting with Maan figures, the King bestowed the Silver Jubilee Medal on individuals and institutions in Maan, in recognition of their contributions to serving Jordan, especially the local community in the governorate.

Independent Excursion: Academic Reflection
Free Writing:
Jordan and I visited Nyan Nyan-Ji temple where we saw a shrine dedicated to cats, art exhibits, and even fed treats to an assistant monk. The temple was very cool with art decorating the walls with ornate decorations. The temple was a minka building with tatami mats and shoji. The shoji doors were well decorated with colorful cat paintings. There was also a bar-themed area that Jordan and I thought was truly sacrilegious given that it is a very sacred site and the divine monks would not enjoy the taste. The cat shrines were filled with religious iconography and objects. The altars at the shrines had offerings for the cats with different treats and statues. Each ceiling tile was painted individually with creative cat paintings. The shrines also had the same purple curtains we have seen at other shrines. We saw posters for the cat art museum but had no idea that this was the same place. We were pleasantly surprised to see the grandiose display of classical art pieces. Each art piece was equipped with a cute story about the creator filled with many puns and a great sense of humor. My favorite art recreations were cat versions of The Scream and The Kiss. The entire experience was silly yet grandiose with full dedication to making it appear genuine.
Academic:
The article I chose entitled "When There Are No More Cats to Argue about: Chan Buddhist Views of Animals in Relation to Universal Buddhanature" discusses Chan Buddhism and the view of cats through didactic messages and debates regarding an animal's capacity for enlightenment.
Cats are commonly seen as positive figures of luck and wisdom within Japanese culture. The Gotokuji Temple in Tokyo is a Buddhist temple filled with lucky cat statues. The folklore about the creation of Gotokuji is that during the early 17th century, Ii Naotaka was beckoned to safety by a cat during a thunderstorm. As an act of gratitude, he established a temple for the cat. This love and respect for cats among Buddhism extends past these specific instances within Japan. It is believed among Buddhism that a cat’s body is the temporary resting place for very wise and spiritual people. While it may be rare to have a temple entirely dedicated to cats, it is very common for cats to live and meditate with monks.
The reading that I chose discusses how cats and dogs are frequently used in anecdotal teachings in Chan Buddhism and their perception within Mahayana portrayals. The reading mentions that cats are used through Chan expressions including gongan to express didactic messages about the possibilities and challenges of mankind’s attempt to reach enlightenment. The reading discusses what is known as the Cat Case, a gongan case where master Nanquan severs a cat and when Zhaozhou hears about the story, he puts sandals on his head and walks away. Nanquan says if the disciple was there, he would not have killed the cat.
The reading also mentions that cats and dogs are prevalent among Chan Buddhist records since they were the most common animals to live with monks as protection from pests while providing a release from loneliness. Cats were considered useful in these anecdotal teachings because people were familiar with them through their similar living conditions and feelings of attachment.
I also appreciated the idea that a mundane natural sound like a cat purring may help spur enlightenment for someone who needs a small stimulus. I would love to be enlightened from hearing my cat, Cuddles, purr.
The ways that cats meditatively stalk their prey to limit pests is well appreciated among Buddhist monks. However, some people consider cats as reincarnated lazy monks who were overly timid. The reason for differing viewpoints is reflective of the sentiment that all sentient beings have an innate Buddha nature and are worthy of being evaluated critically. Within both Chan Buddhism and Zhaozhou’s discourse, it is evaluated whether beings such as cats contain Buddha-hood. However, it is stated that the cat does not ponder such questions or wonder about enlightenment. They are therefore able to achieve a continuing state of awakening of not knowing that reflects Wu and can be considered a higher form of knowing.

An Oxford tour with His Dark Materials: part 2
As an overly enthusiastic Oxford resident, I was delighted by the latest HDM episode. Here are my thoughts and comments on the city as shown in the series. Today I'll fangirl about the city museums; you can find part 1 with the introduction to Oxford here.
Tumblr media
After wandering the streets of Oxford with Will, unsuccessfully trying to find her Jordan College (and actually visiting the prototype of Jordan in the books, which is Exeter), Lyra notices a poster for an Arctic exposition and heads to the museum. This beautiful building houses the Natural History Museum, which has, along with many other things, the last remains of soft tissue of dodo (this made dodo a sort of a local Oxford symbol and a subject of humorous folklore).
Tumblr media
(Pro tip for when the pandemic ends: there is a cafe on the balcony with a magnificent view of the room. From up there you can see that every column is topped with a different leaf pattern - the level of detail in this building is just beyond comprehensible.)
Lyra has to cross this room to get to her destination - the Pitt Rivers Museum of anthropology.
Tumblr media
Now, this is easily one of my favourite places in the world, and the show actually gives a pretty true-to-life idea of how it feels - except you can't see that all the drawers are stuffed with objects as well, and there are two more levels on the balconies above the main floor.
Tumblr media
Lyra stops near a display of traditional waterproof coats made from animal intestines - interestingly, in the first book she wore one of those during her trip to the North, while in the TV series it was obviously changed to something pretty that wouldn't keep her alive in the real North for a day. (Booo to that costume choice from someone who has seen real winter, and who thinks that the traditional costumes are actually cool.)
Tumblr media
Having consulted the alethiometer (there are some objects in Pitt Rivers that look very similar to it, by the way), Lyra walks past this display of creepy wooden statues. Yes I can affirm that they are just as creepy in real life, but also actually very, very cool. This thing is a donation box - called "Antropologists' Fundraising Ritual" - and it has little statutes of some of the original collectors who contributed to the museum, made by the artist from sustainable and discarded materials. There's an amazing level of detail in these statues - one of the anthropologists even has a tiny cat that she used to take on her trips, using the cat as a cultural ice-breaker. When you walk past, these statues move and jingle menacingly and their eyes light up, and if you drop a coin into the slot they bow (while jingling just as menacingly).
I love this thing with all my heart. If I ever manage to do something with my research, please let me be commemorated like this.
Tumblr media
The displays are organised in a unique way in Pitt Rivers - not by counry or century, but solely by topic. For example, you can see the Writing display behind Boreal, and there are others such as Animal Forms, Human Forms, Music and so on. While this looks like a museum curator's worst nightmare, this also makes for an amazing viewing experience, allowing you to compare and see patterns in a way that's just not feasible if objects are distributed across three floors.
Tumblr media
Lyra and Boreal contemplate some skulls. This is a good point to add that, of course, being a British anthropology museum, Pitt Rivers is miles away from unproblematic. While some of the objects have well-traced and ethical history of acquisition, many others belong to the cultures that have lost a lot, and there's a strong argument that they need their cultural objects more than a museum does. From what I know, Pitt Rivers looks at returning objects on a case-by-case base, but they always return human remains if they have been requested. Which is a start, of course, but there are still tons of colonialst baggage here.
One of the most popular displays in the museum had the famous "shrunken heads" - I think that's the very case that Lyra is looking at; very recently a decision was made to remove them from the public view. Pitt Rivers is trying to deal with the colonial heritage issues, and I respect that a lot; however in this particular case I felt that their messaging came across wrong. Surely studying the objects and presenting them in a more thoughtful way, providing context and information, promoting the discussion of past mistakes, is better than just hiding them away? However I'm very aware that I'm not an expert in this field, and that culture/colonialism/museums discussion is a complicated one, so I won't say more on this - for the interested among you, this has been covered quite extensively in local news.
To finish on a lighter note, I'll add some of my own pictures of these museums, so that you can appreciate their (somewhat ethically controversial but still extremely interesting) beauty:

Next up: the last part of the episode, some stunning aerial views of Oxford and the disappointingly fake Botanic Garden :)

Amman's Roman Theatre is a 6,000-seat, 2nd-century Roman theatre. A famous landmark in the Jordanian capital, it dates back to the Roman period when the city was known as Philadelphia. The theatre and the nearby Odeon are flanking the new Hashemite Plaza from the south and the east respectively, while the Roman Nymphaeum is just a short stroll away in a north-westerly direction. The theatre was built during the reign of Antonius Pius (138-161 CE). The large and steeply raked structure could seat about 6,000 people: built into the hillside, it was oriented north to keep the sun off the spectators. It was divided into three horizontal sections (diazomata). Side entrances (paradoi) existed at ground level, one leading to the orchestra and the other to the stage. Rooms behind these entrances now house the Jordan Museum of Popular Tradition on the one side and the Jordan Folklore Museum on the other side. The highest section of seats in a theatre, known in British English as "the gods", even though far from the stage, offer here excellent sightlines, while the actors can be clearly heard, owing to the steepness of it. The theatre is now used as a venue for cultural activities including the Amman International Book Fair, the Amman Marathon prize ceremony, and musical concerts, most notably the Al-Balad Music Festival. https://www.instagram.com/p/B3nc01njsGI/?igshid=3xm4a2h086qv

THE TODDLER GHOST IN THE HAUNTED JORDAN HOUSE - West Des Moines, Iowa. Victorian home built by James C. Jordan in the Italianate Gothic design. Constructed beginning in 1845 and completed in 1870. This home was part of the Underground Railroad system and hosted abolitionist John Brown on several occasions. The Jordan House is said to be haunted by a playful child ghost believed to be Eda Jordan. Eda reportedly died, at the age of three, from an accidental fall while sliding down the stair bannister. Disembodied child giggling has been reported here. A small girl with a cat (presumably Eda with a phantom feline) has allegedly been seen on these grounds. Toys are said to move on their own. Amman City Tour
are you looking for an Amman city tour?
definitely, we provide these kinds of tour but before that, you should know what you gonna see.
let’s introduce brief details about what you will visit.
The Citadel
The citadel is a colorful site, rich in history and boasts a unique sunset overlooking the Roman Amphitheatre in Amman. Amman Citadel stands as the guardian of ancient civilizations that left vestiges inside its 1,700-metre-long wall that dates to the Bronze Age. Used as a rampart protecting the ancient capital of the Ammonites, Rabbath-Ammon — present-day Amman
The Jordan Tourism Board said Amman Citadel receives more than 125,000 visitors each year.
You cannot find a place with so many civilizations that left their marks in a single location. The citadel has this unique diversity that ranges from Assyrians to Babylonians, Persians, Greeks, and Romans, as well as the Umayyad and Ayyubid dynasties, a truly unique experience
The Roman Temple of Hercules that dates to the second century is one of the most popular attractions at the citadel. On display is a huge hand, which is believed to be from a 12-meter-high statue of Hercules.
The Roman Theatre
is the most impressive monument of old Philadelphia, as Amman was known when it was part of the Roman Decapolis, the cities network on the frontier of the Roman Empire in the southeastern Levant. According to an inscription, it was built during the era of the Antonine emperors, at the end of the 2nd century AD.
Its tiered, semicircular seating space, carved into the Jabal Al-Jofeh hill in three horizontal sections with a total of 44 rows can seat around 6,000 people. It faces north so that the audiences are protected from the sun. Social rank dictated the places for the audience. The urban poor, foreigners, slaves, and women were restricted to the upper section. The stage building, about 100 m wide, was probably three stories high. The wooden stage elevates 1.5 meters from the chorus performance space, the orchestra, which has a radius of 13 meters.
Today, the Roman Theatre is again in use for performances, concerts, and events. In addition, halls on both sides of the stage house two small heritage museums: The Folklore Museum and the Museum of Popular Traditions.
The King Abdullah Mosque in Amman – A Spectacular Jordanian Gem
No visit to Jordan is complete without a stop at the King Abdullah Mosque in Amman. By all accounts, the mosque is a prime example of Islamic architecture
The King Abdullah Mosque in Amman is instantly recognizable by its beautiful blue dome, under which as many as 3,000 devotees can gather for prayer. Anyone who spends even a minimal amount of time in the city will almost certainly see the mosque since it’s one of the most distinguishable buildings in the city.
Construction of the King Abdullah Mosque in Amman began in 1982 on the orders of the late King Hussein of Jordan. The mosque, which was to be a tribute to King Hussein’s grandfather, King Abdullah I of Jordan, was finally completed in 1986.

Most people who visit Jordan do so because they have a fascination with history. They want to explore sites and places which have helped shape the world we live in today, and Jordan fits the bill perfectly, regardless of one’s age, gender, race or creed. Whether you want to visit areas mentioned in biblical scriptures, or whether you simply want to experience what it feels like to travel back in time, Jordan is a fantastic destination. Many people who have visited say that there is only one thing better in Jordan than the historical sites it has to offer, and that is the almost unimaginable hospitality of the locals.
