The many curses, ghost stories and urban legends of Yukiko Okada
Tumblr media
On april 8, 1986, 18 year old idol Yukiko Okada shocked the nation when she commited suicide at the height of her fame and popularity by jumping off the Sun Music building in Tokyo, Japan. The reason or reasons for her suicide are unclear, ranging from loneliness, stress, immense pressure and overwork, mental and physical health problems, a forbidden love affair and an illict pregnancy, with the most accepted theory being her unrequited love for actor Tōru Minegishi, who had rejected her. Notes were also discovered later which ended with “I wanted to see him again” and “My heart has nowhere else to go”
Whatever the case, Yukiko’s suicide caused an uproar in japanese society. Graphic scoop photographs were quickly taken of her dead body, brains strewn across the concrete, and printed in newspapers and magazines. A string of copy-cat suicides by jumping off of buildings were reported to such an extent that the term “Yukiko syndrome” or “Yukko-syndrome” was coined for the phenomenon
Yukiko’s sudden and tragic death made a massive impression on the people of Japan, and soon rumors began to spread that Yukiko’s spirit was not quite at peace...
Tumblr media
On June 18, 1986, the Fuji TV station was flooded with telephone calls from shocked viewers who claimed they had seen Yukiko’s ghost during Akina Nakamori’s performance of “Gypsy Queen” on Yoru no Hit Studio.
Sightings of her ghost included Yukiko in a yellow dress sitting and clapping amond the audience (actually guest Yoko Nagayama), Yukiko’s upper body emerging in one of the nearby light poles (actually just shadows and light reflections), her bloodied face showing up to the left of musician Demon Kogure (in actuality blurred red roses placed on the staircase). While others say her spirit could only be seen on the live broadcast and not in the recorded video
Tumblr media
Rumors started to spread that Yukiko’s spirit had perhaps been summoned due to the song “Gypsy Queen”, a song it was said Yukiko was originally supposed to sing but was later handed over to Akina Nakamori, who was also said to have been a rival of hers in the industry. To add insult to injury, it was alleged the song was recorded on April 8, the day Yukiko died.
The lyrics of “Gypsy Queen” does bear some eerie parallels to Yukiko’s fate:
1.   The two of us ended on page one hundred and twenty-five
Yukiko Okada jumped off at 12:05 on April 8
2.  Halfway through our red-hot love
The cause of Yukiko Okada's suicide is said to be over her unhappy love for actor Toru Minegishi
 3.  Grieving to the heavy sky casting a wine red tint on everything
Yukiko Okada commited suicide by jumping down from the 7th floor of a building (flying into the sky) and dyed the ground with (wine red) blood
4.  Sighs spill out onto my asphalt bed.
This one speaks for itself.
When Akina Nakamori three years later also attempted suicide, fortunately without success, rumors swirled that this was also the work of Yukiko Okada's angry spirit.
Although it is worth noting that Akina on the contrary were on friendly terms with Yukiko, and even burst into tears when she heard the news of of her death death. This didn’t put a stopper to the ghost stories though, this time it was speculated Yukiko’s spirit saved her life instead
Soon more legends about the restless spirit of Yukiko Okada appearing on programs such as "Pacific Saury no Manma" (where her ghost allegedly could be seen choking fellow idol and rival Seiko Matsuda) and "The Best Ten" quickly started to spread as well.
Another urban legend that quickly began to roam the nation, was that of the mysterious death of the man who photographed Yukiko’s dead body on the scene. It was said that the photographer even kicked her body unto her back for an even more graphic photo (this photograph is now said to be locked up along with other top secret documents in the Hochi Shimbum vault) Just one year later, the photographer died in a mysterious sauna or car accident, and people began to speak of the curse of Yukiko Okada.
This urban legend would eventually overlap with the now infamous “cursed Kleenex commercial”, which it was said this same man worked on, to the misfortune of it’s cast and crew who all allegedly went mad or died mysterious deaths (as well as anyone unfortunate or brave enough to watch it)
However, it did eventually turn out that the camera man who died in the accident and the man who photographed Yukiko’s body were two different people and the photographer is still alive and kicking to this day. That and the commercial was filmed in 1985, one year before Yukiko’s death.
Tumblr media
The number 4 is in Japan associated with bad luck and death. Yukiko Okada is famous for being intwined with this particular number. For example, her debut was in April, she committed suicide in April, she moved out of her production dormitory on April 4, and her new condominium room was Room 402. Most notably, a photo of Yukiko was taken of her at the premiere of Rocky 4. The truly ominous part is that is was taken the evening before her death.
Tumblr media
A spirit photograph, or psychic photograph, showing a young woman with what appears to be a giant, floating red eye to her right is said to depict Yukiko Okada the day before her death. What appears to be a giant red eye speculated to be the God of Death, ominously hoveri by her, waiting for the fatal hour it will take her soul to the spirit world. The photo turned out to actually be from a book collection of psychic photography from 1985, a whole year before Yukiko Okada killed herself.
Other sensational urban legends about Yukiko abound, like how singer and actress Erika Sawajiri is Yukiko Okada reincarnated as she was born April 8, the same day Yukiko committed suicide, as well as for her supposed love for older men, how Yukiko’s fans scooped up her brains and took them home and even ate them, how in Seiko Matsuda’s 1986 album "The Tears of the Puppet", you can hear the voice of Yukiko saying "thank you", perhaps Yukiko thanking Seiko for writing songs for her, how if you set a picture of Yukiko as your phone background you can hear her cry through the reciever, how according to a psychic a female ghost, speculated to be Yukiko, “very beautiful during her lifetime, and she was pregnant when she died, and she was very angry" haunts singer Minami Takahashi who was also born April 8, and how the japanese tv guide magazine “The Television” always poses their front page artists with a lemon as a protective charm against Yukiko’s ghost and curse.
To be honest, the whole concept of Yukiko Okada’s ghost / curse brings up mixed emotions in me. On one hand the idea of the restless, angry spirit of a beautiful girl who died tragically definitely captures one’s imagination, and it is an interesting reflection on society’s enduring fascination with celebrity, youth, tragedy, death and the paranormal, all in one package. On the other hand, the fact that the tragic death of this unhappy girl was turned into such sensational stories can be considered disrespectful, even expoitative in a way, to the memory of this talented, hardworking girl.
Akina Nakamori herself probably put it best with her response to the uproar; "Yukiko-chan is a lovely girl with a kind heart. I don't think she is like that."
Whatever your views are on the matter, what can not be denied is the massive impact Yukiko Okada’s tragic end had on Japanese society, an impact that can still be felt to this day, ghost or no ghost.

Do You Like the Red Room?
Tumblr media
The Red Room Curse is a Japanese urban legend that existed in the much earlier days of the internet. Supposedly while scrolling on the internet, a red pop up with black text would appear on the user's computer screen that asked "Do you like —?" When the victim would try to close it, it would open itself back up, asking "Do you like the red room?" The screen will then turn red, (or black, depending on the variation of the story), and will have a list of names of the other victim's of the Red Room. The user will then feel a strange presence in their room, and are either killed or driven to suicide, with their blood painting the walls of the room, hence why it's called the Red Room Curse.
The pop up did exist at one point, however without the curse, of course. It was made in Adobe Flash and was uploaded to Geocities, along with a story about how a boy was afflicted with the curse and died after seeing the animation. It's likely that's where the urban legend of the curse started.
I do enjoy internet urban legends in particular, as a person who grew up with unsupervised access to the internet as a kid. I think that kind of experience makes them resonate with me a bit more than other urban legends. I do think it's also interesting that this one in particular was all caused by a simple flash animation with an attached story to it. It almost reminds me of username666, and how that stuck with us so effectively thanks to the video that caused the legends of that "user".

The many puzzle-pieces that served as inspo for Sukuna
A long time ago I made a little deck about elements of Buddhism woven into Jujutsu Kaisen's story.
Since I got a little time on my hands (and he's finally made it back to the manga!) I'd like to put this little run-down on influences Sukuna draws from here as well and extend a bit on it, since more than 2 years have passed since then. (And I've been meaning to rework the deck, but lack time and wantto get at least this one out properly again).
First of all - I don't think Gege copies any character or legend 1:1. IMO, Gege is drawing from various sources and remixing them into his own thing. Whether that's for the story, setting, characters or specifically Sukuna.
So let's have a look at all the historical and mythological characters Sukuna is remixed from.
Ryoumen Sukuna the 2Chan Urban Legend
This is the one probably the most people have heard about, since Gege openly mentioned having drawn inspiration from this:
The 2Chan post about an urban legend how some construction workers allegedly found a 2 meter sized box labeled as "Ryomen Sukuna" with a mummy of conjoined twins inside. The guys who opened it fell sick. The box was given to a local priest to handle the bad energies and at some later point someone called the priest's son and learned it was some deformed freak who died in a way some Buddhist monks practiced a long time ago - by simply meditating ascetically until you enter mummification while still alive.
You can read more on that here.
This is where Gege was clearly inspired to get mummified Sukuna, full to the brim with negative energy, delivered to the story in a box.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The "Rasetsu" Daijizaiten/Ishanaten (伊舎那)
Rasetsu are demon-spirits that reside in the heavenly realms, who have the power to influence and seduce humans, and then eat them. In Buddhism rasetsu are also believed to act as wardens under The Lord of Hell - Enma - punishing the damned. Ishana/Ishanaten/Isana/Daijizaiten is a demon spirit from the highestheaven of the world of desire and is often shown with a three-pronged spear in right hand, and a bowl of blood in his left. He is one of the eight manifestations of Shiva and presides over cosmic destruction.
While he is usually described with many-faces and many arms, in the Womb World Mandala he appears with two arms, dark red in colour, seated on a dark-blue buffalo, and accompanied by his consort "Uma"(烏摩), also seated on a buffalo.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I believe this is what inspired the design for Sukuna's original giant curse form. Color-coded in red, eating humans, holding a three-pronged spear and drinking blood while causing destruction. Yup. Sounds about right.
Daijizaiten's son, Kitchen God Sukanda/Idaten
Daijizaiten has a son, Idaten, also called Sukanda 塞建駄, who is the God of the Kitchen and looks after the provisions of the Buddhist brotherhood. He is known as a swift runner, because legend has it that he ran with great speed to catch a demon thief who stole the ashes of the deceased Buddha. Wherever there is trouble, he is instantly found there. His appearance is not described. In Japan he is usually in a little shrine attached to the monks' dining-room
I believe this is where Gege got the inspiration to give Sukuna his little cooking theme he got going on around his curse technique and domain. From the Japanese name for the shrine that can be read as an imperial palace's cooking quarter, through his cleave & dismantle technique that is illustrated with respective sushi knives for skinning and chopping fish. And of course he is cooking with fire, as we see with Jogo.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Interesting that Sukuna has all this sushi chef imagery going on, when there is so much fish symbolism in the story and especially the anime - from the culling games' original name Japanese name referring to the annual fish migration to all the fish shown in the Season 1 intro and a lot more. Of course, there is also the little shoutout to this when Sukuna tells Gojo he's nothing but a fish on his chopping board.

Heian era scholar & poet Sugawara no Michizane, deified after death
Sugawara no Michizane was a respected politician and poet at the imperial court for most of his life. Michizane took a great liking to plum ("ume") trees. In his later years, there was a power struggle between rivaling clans and after the emperor he worked under abdicated, he was demoted, banished and sent into exile by the new (Fujiwara) clan who assumed all influential official posts and rose to power. Exiled, he wrote a famous haiku bemoaning the absence of his favourite ume tree.
Tumblr media
(It does fit awfully well to Uraume not forgetting Sukuna for a thousand years until they reunite, huh?) According to legend, his favorite plum tree flew from Kyoto to Dazaifu in Kyushu to be with him. Shortly after, he died in exile. Now something very peculiar happened - shortly after Michizane died, the land was struck by death, plague and drought. The new emperor's sons all died one after the other. Lightning repeatedly struck the Imperial Palace's Great Audience Hall and there were rainstorms and floods for weeks.
Tumblr media
People assumed Michizane had become a vengeful spirit and built a shrine (Kitano Tenmangu) to appease him, while posthumously restoring his office and titles and planting many ume trees. Legend also states that during Michizane's funeral procession, the bull pulling the cart bearing his remains refused to go any further than a certain spot, so his shrines are usually decorated with statues of bulls.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
If you look at it, it's really on the nose, isn`t it? :)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
While a few people have been theorizing Sukuna might have known Sugawara no Michizane or that he might be his relative, mostly because Gojo namedrops him as a potential shared ancestor between Gojo and Yuta ... I personally think that Sukuna is partially based on him and I'd love to find out if this is going to have relevance at a later point in the story. We know so little about Sukuna's time as a human, but when you look at the design of his Malevolent Shrine full of ox skulls, the fact his consort is called Uraume and has plum-themed hair and how he refers to himself as a calamity back in the day, much like plagues, famines & storms, the puzzle pieces really fit together quite smoothly.
And as a last puzzle piece: After a life of being revered and looked up to as a court official next to the emperor, Michizane was exiled and fell from grace at the imperial court when another clan took over —- now remember how Sukuna calls himself „the disgraced (or „fallen“) one“. How intriguing, is ‚t it?
As for his tattoos: Inspiration might have been an old Japanese practice to tattoo criminals with symbols indicating their crimes. The practice comes from the Edo times (1603–1867), making it multiple hundred years too late for a Heian (794 to 1185) criminal. Nevertheless, fair game for loose inspiration.
Tumblr media
Another inspiration might have been something from a specific Buddhist hell (there are multiples ones). In Kokujou Jigoku (黒縄地獄), the Hell of Black Threads, those who have killed and committed theft, receive marking lines made of black thread on their body from demons and ogres, so these demons know where to hack their bodies apart as punishment, using axes and saws.
Tumblr media
What I find intriguing most about Sukuna's tattoos is that he has them on all his bodies - both Yuji's and Megumi's --- which would indicate they are more like, uh, tattooed onto his soul than his own skin, why else would they show up on multiple meatsuits of his? My last guess about the tattoos has no footing anywhere, so take it as a random sidenote - I'm just wondering if he might be sealing something with those sigils. Who knows what their purpose is. Maybe he just likes the look of it, who knows.
So, to recap.
I think Sukuna's appearance in modern times is taken from the 2chan thread as Gege said, his further character design is mostly lent from the Sugawara no Michizane legends (fall from grace, calamities, shrine, ox and "Ume" plum tree included) and his curse form is further inspired by Daijizaiten, the human-eating god of destruction who is also accompanied by an ox and a consort called "Uma" and finished off with a touch of that god's son Sukanda who is a literal kitchen god and a fast runner, tending to a shrine's kitchen.
OF COURSE this man is a scholar turned rogue fun-loving cannibal. <3 His demeanor is not that of a peasant who never learned to read who's struggling to meet ends during a famine, but shows he has been moving among higher ranks back as a human. He attended festivals as a curse/deity and even cares about the seasonal aspect of Yorozu's haiku.
Tumblr media
This man has been around the imperial court in the Heian times, knows how to play politics and intrigue and evidently studied mind and soul of humans since way back then, until he rose above it. That's not up for debate, hahaha. Where his arc is going? We shall see. Still hard to say at this point. You'll find me over here, holding out for a flashback to his past. Thanks for reading, I hope you enjoyed! -Jisa
Tumblr media
Yup, that‘s me writing poetry in blood with my scholar turned curse upon humanity commissioned from JinRozenrot . As my old friend Mr Lecter would say: Tada~ ♥

THE CONNECTION BETWEEN SUKUNA AND KENKAJU IS INSANELY SIMPLE I CAN'T BELIEVE IT FLEW OVER OUR HEADS!
I might mention spoilers so explanation under the cut.
We've been too busy on finding out the relationship between Sukuna and Yuji that we neglected to focus of Ryomen Sukuna's mythological origin alone. 😳
Ryomen Sukuna is an entity which actually originates from japanese lore, and depending on which lore he could be a demon commiting heinous crimes like in "Nihon Shoki", or could be a real life person who was in service for the emperor with a temple built in his (Sukuna's) honor in Japan's Gihu prefecture, or in an even more recent urban legend, was previously the source of a cult's power in his life time and eventually mummified and became a source of curses and disasters in his death. In the first two, Sukuna is depicted as a clever and powerful being with immense fighting skill. And in all three of these stories, they describe his appearance as having two faces, two pairs of arms, and two pairs of legs.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Two faces.
Two faces could also mean two heads, right? If that were the case, then that would also mean Ryomen Sukuna had to have two brains. But, if that were the case, what happened to the other one?
In the entire manga, we conveniently have just that-- a brain, possessing sorcerers with no body of its own, with his original identity unknown. KENKAJU!
Tumblr media
Yes, I'm implying that Kenkaju and Ryomen Sukuna are twins. And not your average twins but conjoined twins! I think this alone could explain his power since he is an anomaly even by jujutsu standards. Jujutsu gods might have pitied his existence or that he was simply a glitch that either way he was granted some sort of heavenly restriction, or I dont know, in his case, it might as well be called heavenly liberation as he is entirely blessed with both physical prowess and powerful sorcerery. More on this later, for now let's focus on Kenkaju and Ryomen Sukuna being twins.
Them being twins actually explains a lot! Like how Kenkaju got Sukuna to join the culling game for one. It was simply because Kenkaju was in it, and since in the JJK universe twins are one entity, what binds one, binds the other as well. Two, Kenkaju creating a perfect vessel for Sukuna in Yuji, he was Yuji's mom for crying out loud. What could yield a better compatability than him creating a vessel for himself. (Considering again that in the jjk universe Kenkaju and Ryomen Sukuna are one). It could even possibly hint at Kenkaju's end goal with the culling game only ending only with the condition of Geto Suguru and Megumi Fushiguro surviving (which is Kenkaju's plan of leaving only him and Sukuna alone) Another theory on this later.
Let's move on to the physical appearances of both:
1) Ryomen Sukuna from the lore had two faces. But Ryomen Sukuna from the anime simply has four eyes, i don't know about the nose, but the second mouth could be on Kenkaju, since he's practically just that, a brain with a mouth. But some could argue the fact that in the latest chapters of jjk where Sukuna begins to take his true form that shows us that he has a second huge mouth on his abdomen. So this theory doesn't hold water because of that.
2) Look at Sukuna's true form:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I always wondered why one side of his face was is always drawn so askew. Following my theory, I think that's where the other face/ Kenkaju used to be.
That's about it for now. 😅

Daily Lives of Jujutsu High Students
Time set in around 2006-2007.
This story tells the daily lives and youthful troubles of four students from a certain year at Tokyo Jujutsu High.
Various x F. Reader!
Tumblr media
01 - The Cursed Book
In a vast plot of land surrounded by towering walls and large trees atop a certain mountain in Tokyo, stands a uniquely styled traditional Japanese architecture. Inside, it is said to enshrine the cremated remains of the legendary Jujutsu sorcerer "Kūkai" from the Nara period in a Three-storied Pagoda. Inside, there were warehouses filled with various dangerously powerful cursed tools, an inexplicable swimming pool despite the absence of swimming classes, and a playground covering an area equivalent to two and a half football fields (running there felt like losing ten years of your life). In the courtyard, there were two chickens named Nuggets and Corn Ball, along with dogs, horses, deer, elephants, and giraffes leisurely grazing. There were even rumors of lions freely roaming around the place. However, these were all urban legends, and distinguishing what was true, false, or mere gossip became a challenge. For most citizens of Tokyo, the interior of the school remained a mysterious realm that couldn't be explored.
The name of this school was the Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical College, commonly known as Tokyo Jujutsu High.
Among the two existing educational institutions for jujutsu in Japan, it presented itself as a private religious school. Many jujutsu sorcerers considered it the starting point of their careers even after graduation. Therefore, the school not only served as an educational institution but also facilitated missions and provided support, making it a crucial hub in the jujutsu world.
Furthermore, the school had nurtured numerous talents in the jujutsu field, with the ratio of Grade 1 and Special Grade sorcerers originating from Tokyo Jujutsu High being twice that of the Kyoto school.
However, at that moment, a dialogue unfolded in the second-year classroom of Tokyo Jujutsu High:
"Afternoon classes are over. So boring..." You slouched over the desk, dragging your words with a prolonged tone.
"What do you want to do then?" The black-haired boy sitting across from you asked indifferently.
His name was Geto Suguru, with slender eyes, thin eyebrows, large ear piercings dangling from elongated earlobes, a bun hairstyle, and a long fringe hanging over his forehead. At first glance, he gave off a delinquent vibe, but after getting acquainted, he still seemed like one.
"Oh, I know!" The white-haired boy with black sunglasses on your left suddenly exclaimed, "How about Y/n becomes the target, and we all have a water balloon fight? I saw it on a variety show yesterday, and it looked fun."
Tumblr media
"Why don't you become the target yourself, you jerk!" you replied indignantly.
Tumblr media
"We don't have any balloons, so how are we going to play?" The brown-haired girl on your right responded irritably.
This was Ieiri Shoko, a short-haired and sharp-looking beauty. But don't be fooled by her pretty face, as beneath that attractive facade, there was a middle-aged man who enjoyed smoking and drinking. Due to her gentle personality, she played the role of the peacemaker in your four-person group.
The white-haired boy pondered for a while, then extended his index finger with a smile. "How about using real shurikens instead? You win if you hit specific targets."
"That's practically attempted murder!" you immediately retorted.
"Oh, really?" The white-haired boy tilted his head, seemingly thinking it was not a big deal. "Well, Shoko can heal you with Reverse Cursed Technique, so you'll only be left with scars. Don't mind, don't mind!"
This white-haired boy with a tone that could provoke a beating was Gojo Satoru, born into the Gojo family, one of the Big Three Sorcerer Families. In other words, he was the privileged young master from a wealthy family. At the same time, he was also the possessor of the "Six Eyes." It was a rare occurrence within the Gojo family, happening only once every few hundred years. Hence, not only was he wealthy, but he also possessed extraordinary power. It wouldn't be an exaggeration to say that Gojo was a chosen one. However, his personality was extremely poor, and he always enjoyed teasing and mocking others. But since you had known him since childhood, you had become immune to his teasing and pranks. Still, dealing with a fool like Gojo every day sometimes made it hard to contain your anger.
"Ah... I almost forgot the fact that Satoru you're an idiot." you shake your head and sigh. "I shouldn't have expected you to possess common sense."
"What do you mean? Huh?" Gojo's face contorts into an expression of displeasure, his mouth drooping.
Tumblr media
"If I were to have scars on my delicate flawless skin, how would I ever find a boyfriend?" you say, your face filled with sadness.
Gojo bursts into laughter. "Stop dreaming! Even without scars, you'll never get a boyfriend in your lifetime."
As if an arrow pierced through your heart, your heart tightens for a moment.
You cover your aching chest and say with a mournful expression, "To be told this by someone like you, who has even less chance of getting a girlfriend, truly, there is no justice in this world."
"Tsk tsk tsk, don't compare me to yourself," Gojo shakes his index finger, resembling a certain prosecutor※. "I'm quite popular among the girls, you know."
Tumblr media
[※Note: In case nobody knows, the reference here is to Miles Edgeworth from "Ace Attorney," whose signature gesture is shaking his index finger.]
Upon hearing this, you, Geto, and Ieiri simultaneously wave your hands and say in unison, "No way."
"I mean, since we have nothing else to do, how about going down the mountain?" you suggest. "I heard there's a section in the basement of the bookstore across from Hanadate Elementary School that's filled with H-manga. And rumor has it that the owner doesn't really check your age before letting you buy them. How about it? Want to go together?"
The other three immediately fall silent, staring at you with complex expressions.
Geto rubs his temples. "Why the sudden interest in buying H-manga?"
"Because I want to read them," you honestly reply.
"That’s straightforward…"
You shrug. "Besides, it will be less weird to have guys accompany me."
"A group of people going to buy H-manga is already super weird!"
"Fine! It's because Suguru you look closer to eighteen!"
"That's your real reason, right?!"
In the end, the four of you went to the bookstore across from Hanadate Elementary School.
Standing on the sidewalk outside the bookstore, the four of you began to formulate a plan. The layout of the bookstore consisted of two floors, with the upper floor selling stationery and reference books, while the lower floor housed books and paper supplies, which was your target.
"Alright, let's proceed according to the plan," you deliberately lowered your voice and said, "Since we don't know which section has the H-manga, I'll go check the novels section, Suguru will go to the manga section, and Shoko will pretend to be interested in buying reference books to distract the store clerk's attention."
"What about me?" Gojo pointed at himself and asked.
You snapped your fingers and pointed at him, saying, "You'll be the one paying."
"Oi, oi, oi!" Gojo exclaimed loudly. "I'm not some kind of ATM! I want to go with you to the novels section."
"Whatever." you said. "Well then, let's agree on this, the 'Operation H' begins!"
Geto looked at you with disdain and said, "Why are you so excited..."
The four of you entered the bookstore in single file. As you entered, the bell hanging on the door rang crisply, catching the attention of the young male store clerk who had been dozing off. He immediately looked up at all of you.
"What would you like to buy?" the male store clerk walked over and asked.
You felt a sudden jolt in your heart, thinking, "Oh no! Now the store clerk's attention will be on us."
Just as you were feeling nervous, you felt an added weight on your shoulder. You turned to see a hand with light pink nail polish resting on your shoulder. Following the hand, you saw Shoko nodding slightly at you, her smile on her face seemed to say, "Leave it to me!"
You responded with a smile, though you didn't say it out loud, your smile already conveyed the message, "I'll leave it to you."
"I'd like to buy an English reference book for second-year high school," Shoko calmly said in the face of danger.
"English, is it? It's over there. Ah, let me take you there," the male store clerk said.
"That would be great."
With that, Shoko followed the male store clerk.
Watching Shoko's figure, you muttered to yourself, "Wait for us, we'll bring back the H-manga!"
Then you wiped away tears that didn't exist and entered the manga and novels section of the lower floor together with Geto and Gojo.
As soon as you entered this section, a musty odor mixed with the smell of ink greeted you. The shelves were filled with a diverse array of books, making it difficult to know where to start looking.
"So many books, how are we supposed to find it?" you placed your hands on your hips, furrowing your brow as you looked at the sea of books before you.
"Oh, right!" as if suddenly remembering something, you lightly pounded your right fist onto your left palm. You looked at Gojo and asked, "Satoru, can your Six Eyes see where the H-manga is?"
"Oi, do you really have a brain under that skull of yours?" as if confirming, Gojo lightly tapped your head. "Do you think the Six Eyes are some kind of X-ray vision?"
You swatted away his hand on your head and then disdainfully said, "Tch, if you can't even find the H-manga, it seems the Six Eyes aren't that impressive."
"Huh? Be careful, or I might just kill you, you know?"
"Anyway," Geto interjected, interrupting the argument between you and Gojo, "let's start looking."
The three of you searched for about ten minutes, but there was still no sign of the H-manga.
"These all look like regular manga," you stood in front of a bookcase, furrowing your brow.
"Did you make a mistake? Maybe there's no H-manga here at all," Gojo asked.
Your shoulders dropped immediately, "Maybe..."
"Hey, look over here," Geto said, beckoning both of you to come to his side.
After you and Gojo walked over to the manga section where Geto was, Geto placed his hand in the gap between two bookcases and pulled them apart. The two bookcases made a slight noise as they slid open, one to the left and the other to the right.
You were astonished to find that behind the two bookcases, there was a built-in wall shelf! And it was filled with H-manga!
"So many H-manga!" you couldn't help but be shocked by the scene before your eyes and shouted.
"Don't yell so loud! Do you want everyone to know we're buying H-manga?" Geto hurriedly said in a hushed voice. "Let's quickly choose one and go to the checkout."
Geto casually picked up one H-manga from the shelf. The cover of the book depicted a blushing girl in a school uniform. "What about this one?" he asked, "After-School Secrets with the Student Council President."
"It looks boring," Gojo commented as he also took a book from the shelf. "Maybe this one, Playtime with My Childhood Friend."
You sighed. "I'm telling you, if we're buying it, why not go for something with a cover and content that looks more explicit? If we're buying, let's go for the most scandalous!"
"Is that something a high school girl would say?!" Geto shouted.
"Ah, let's go with this one," you picked up another book, which had a cover and title even more provocative than the previous two, without any censorship even on private parts. "Endless SEX!"
Taking advantage of his height, Gojo reached behind you and took the book from your hands. He flipped through it and glanced at the synopsis on the back. "Wow," he exclaimed, then continued, "This one has a super diverse content, with older brother and sister, stepmother and stepson, and even [content muted]."
"Then let's go with this one," Geto said, "But how are we going to check out?"
"You go," you said.
"Yeah, you go," Gojo chimed in.
Geto frowned slightly, slightly displeased, and asked, "Why me?"
"Because you look like you're over 18." you explained.
"I’m not!" Geto's face showed an unusual expression of embarrassment, his emotions flaring up. "The previous After-School Secrets might have been fine, but the cover of this one is as shameful as asking me to go naked to the checkout!"
"Don't worry, the cashier here doesn't pay much attention to the content. Just take a quick look and pay, and it'll be over," you said seriously. "Besides, you have an absolute advantage."
"What advantage?"
You smiled faintly. "You look like a guy in his twenties."
"Satoru, I'll take the top, you take the bottom, let's split Y/n in half." Geto said calmly.
Tumblr media
You were shocked. "Please don't say something so terrifying in such a calm tone!"
"Then how about we decide with a game of rock-paper-scissors?" Gojo suggested.
"Oh?" Geto raised an eyebrow. "Good idea."
You chuckled lightly and flicked your hair. "Speaking of rock-paper-scissors, I absolutely won't lose. Prepare to be humiliated, Suguru!"
"You arrogant idiot." Geto scoffed. "Let's get started then. Rock, paper, scissors!"
Gojo showed scissors, while both you and Geto showed paper.
A smirk appeared on Gojo's lips. "I won. You two have a final match to decide."
You squinted at Geto across from you and said with a serious tone, "Suguru, I never thought we would end up like this. We were such good friends."
"Indeed, maybe we should have never crossed paths from the beginning." Geto said with a bitter smile. Then he rallied and clenched his fist. "Let's settle this once and for all, Y/n!"
"Let me tell you first, this time I'll choose paper," you said.
Geto snorted. "Stop the nonsense and let's get started!"
"Then let's begin! Scissors—" you shouted.
"Rock—" Geto shouted.
"Paper—!!" After you finished shouting, both of you made your choices simultaneously.
You showed paper, and Geto showed rock.
"Hahaha! You fucking Idiot!!" You burst into laughter, clutching your stomach. "I told you I would choose paper!"
Geto looked at his own fist, as if asking, "Why?"
In the end, Geto went to the checkout, and to make it less awkward, he even put a reference book on top as a diversion.
"Let me help you checkout!" The cashier sister said, "I see, an English reference book and...!"
When she saw that book, she visibly gasped and wore a bewildered expression on her face.
On the other hand, Geto maintained a calm smile on his face.
The cashier sister composed herself and calmly said, "...That will be 2,500 yan."
"Thank you."
After paying, Geto walked out of the bookstore with a smile. However, as soon as he reached your side, his smile immediately disappeared, and his expression changed faster than the rate at which conceptual stocks plummet.
"I won't come to this bookstore ever again."
Geto Suguru, socially dead.
Since it was already late, you guys took the bus back to the school. Once you four arrived in the common area of the dormitory, you four couldn't wait any longer and eagerly tore off the plastic wrap protecting the book.
"Let me open it." You swallowed a gulp of saliva and carefully lifted one of the pages. Just by looking at one page, you were already astonished and speechless.
"How is it?" Gojo asked curiously.
"No, this has already surpassed my understanding of H-manga." Although you said this, your body involuntarily turned to the next page. "This book is nothing but a wetland between chunks of flesh!" You said with slightly rapid breathing.
"Huh? Let me take a look." Gojo took the book, glanced at it, then put it down, and picked it up again for a few more glances.
"What do you think?" You asked tentatively.
Gojo remained silent for a moment, then suddenly shouted, "Why can her '[Censored]' and '[Censored]' have two '[Censored]' at once?!"
"You guys are exaggerating, aren't you?" Geto, who had been silently listening, couldn't hold back and interjected. He took the book, furrowing his brow as he looked at it.
After a short while, he closed the book and placed it on the table. "So '[Censored]' can be played like this."
"Really?" Ieiri raised an eyebrow and asked, picking up the book for a few glances. However, her reaction was calm. "Is that all? It seems like you guys are just a bunch of ignorant kids after all."
"Don't act like you've seen so much!" you retorted.
"Oh, senpais, you're back," a cheerful voice said.
The four of you turned to see Haibara, a year 1 student, standing at the doorway with Nanami, another freshman.
You quickly hid the book under your clothes and tried to keep your voice steady. "Oh, it's Yu-chan and Nanamin."
"Can you stop calling me Nanamin, senpai? Other people will start imitating it." Nanami, with Danish heritage, a handsome mixed-race face, and blond hair, frowned and said.
"By the way," Haibara approached you all, "it seemed like you were discussing something interesting just now!"
"R-really?" you asked.
"Are you... reading H-manga?" Haibara asked unabashedly, getting straight to the point.
Tumblr media
You coughed a few times. "No, it's not like that. We're diligent students who excel in academics. Why would we read that kind of stuff?"
Haibara looked at you with a puzzled expression. "But I clearly saw Geto senpai buying H-manga at the bookstore."
Geto's face turned pale.
"Alright, alright!" You gave up resistance and took out the H-manga from your clothes, holding it up. "We were reading H-manga!"
The room fell into a tense silence. No one dared to speak, while Haibara and Nanami looked at the cover of the book in shock.
After a long silence, Nanami was the first to speak. He sighed and looked disappointedly at the four of you, "I expected it from Gojo and Y/n, but I didn't think Ieiri and Geto senpais would be like this too."
Tumblr media
Gojo was displeased. "What do you mean by 'expected it from Gojo and Y/n' huh?!"
"I-I didn't expect you guys to like this kind of H-manga," Haibara forced a smile and said. "But what are you going to do with this book? It would be bad if the teachers found out."
"Well..." you rubbed your chin, pondering for a moment. "Let's put the book in the third-year classroom! Nobody will know it was us."
Gojo nodded in agreement. "That's settled then!"
"Is it really okay to do that?" Nanami questioned.
"Don't worry, if there's any problem, Satoru will take care of it!" you pointed your thumb at Gojo.
Gojo pouted. "Why do I have to take care of it?"
"Because you have a strong background! Don't mind, don't mind!"
So, you placed the H-manga in the third-year classroom, thinking that would be the end of it. But to your surprise, after two days, the H-manga appeared in your classroom again. Even when you threw it in the trash can, it would mysteriously reappear in the classroom after a few days.
"This book is definitely cursed!" you pointed at the H-manga, fear evident on your face. "If we let it roam freely in the school, the consequences are unimaginable."
Geto looked at you and asked, "What should we do then?"
"We should seal it." you said solemnly.
You four took a blank sheet of paper and wrapped it around the book. Then you four wrote a bunch of warning words and incantations on it before tying it tightly with a red thread.
"Oh curse hidden within this book, vanish before us!" you declared. With that, you threw the H-manga behind the shelve of the library, making sure it was impossible to retrieve without moving the entire bookshelf.
"This way, it won't reappear again," you said with folded hands, "Thank you, "Endless SEX", for giving us the most precious lesson in health education."
Gojo, too, unusually serious, folded his hands and whispered a "thank you" towards the bookshelf that concealed "Endless SEX."
"You two idiots." Geto said to Gojo and you.
Shoko glanced at you and Gojo disapprovingly, then covered her stomach and said, "I'm hungry. Let's go to an izakaya and grab something to eat. I feel like having grilled octopus skewers tonight."
Upon hearing the word "octopus," a certain scene from "Endless SEX" suddenly flashed in your mind—an enormous octopus engaging in tentacle play with a woman.
You clasped your hands over your ears in agony. "Please stop! You're making me recalling that scene!"
Tumblr media
Shoko smirked mischievously and leaned in close to your face. "Do you want to be '[Censored]' by an octopus? Its tentacles can '[Censored]' you, and '[Censored]' your '[Censored]'."
You looked at Shoko in horrified disbelief, as if you saw demonic horns sprouting from her head.
"Akuma(demon)..."
※※※
Epilogue:
One day in 2018, "Endless SEX" was unsealed.
In a classroom at Tokyo Jujutsu High School, three first-year students looked at the rectangular object on the desk. It was covered in warning words and incantations, tied with a red string. Their faces displayed a mixture of confusion and curiosity.
"Itadori, where did you find this thing?" Kugisaki asked.
"Behind the bookshelf in the library," Itadori replied.
"Put it back quickly," Fushiguro frowned, "I have a bad feeling about it."
Kugisaki looked disappointed. "Huh? But I'm really curious about what's inside!"
"Me too!" Itadori chimed in. "Let's open it and see!"
Tumblr media
"Do you think this is some kind of Christmas present?" Fushiguro rubbed his forehead, trying to soothe the wrinkles there (because he often frowned). "The incantations written on it aren't random; they can truly suppress curses."
However, the other two didn't pay attention and proceeded to untie the red string and remove the white wrapping paper.
"Oi, you two!" Fushiguro shouted in a coarse voice.
After tearing off the paper, they were greeted by the sight of a completely naked woman.
Itadori's face immediately turned red, and he stammered, "Th-this...!"
"This is an H-manga!" Kugisaki exclaimed, wide-eyed, pointing at the book.
Fushiguro also lost his usual composure. "Who on earth put this in the library!?"
At that moment, Gojo walked into the classroom and, upon seeing the expressions on the three students' faces, couldn't help but ask curiously, "What's wrong? You all look pale."
Itadori quickly hid the book behind his back and nervously said to Gojo, "N-nothing!"
Gojo clearly saw through the act. "Stop pretending and show me what's behind you."
Itadori chose to play dumb, feigning confusion. "What's behind me?"
Gojo walked up to the three students, extending his right hand and commanding in a no-nonsense tone, "Hurry up."
"Alright." Itadori didn't want to offend Gojo, so he obediently handed "Endless SEX" to him.
Crap, now I’m going to get scolded by Gojo-sensei.
Just as Itadori was thinking this, Gojo burst into laughter.
The three students exchanged puzzled glances and then looked at Gojo, who was laughing heartily.
"So nostalgic," Gojo said. "We used to put this in the library."
"What?!" Kugisaki exclaimed in disbelief, her eyes widening. "So, Gojo-sensei, you're into this kind of stuff?"
"No, no, it's just something we bought out of boredom back then," Gojo explained. "But how did you find this book? I remember Y/n putting it deep behind the bookshelf in the library."
Itadori scratched the back of his head and sheepishly said, "I accidentally knocked over the bookshelf and happened to see this book."
"I see," Gojo said, taking out his phone from his pocket. "That's hilarious. I should take a picture and show it to Y/n and Shoko."
"Eh?" The three students made strange noises simultaneously.
"Ieiri-san has seen this book too?!" Itadori asked."I can't even imagine!" Itadori said, and the other two nodded in agreement.
After taking the photo, Gojo put his phone back. "But I still have to confiscate this book. It's too dangerous."
"Are you planning to take it and read it all by yourself?" Kugisaki asked.
"Why would I do that?" Gojo waved his hand. "Get ready, we're going out to exorcise curses."
Upon hearing that they could go out, Itadori became energized. "Got it!"
"Meet at the entrance later," Gojo said, then walked out of the classroom.
After Gojo left, Kugisaki spoke up, "By the way, Fushiguro, you're pretty close with Gojo-sensei, right?"
"It's not like we're that close," Fushiguro said.
"Whatever. Do you know who he's referring to as 'Y/n'?"
Fushiguro nodded. "She’s a strong jujutsu sorcerer, but not someone worth emulating."
"So, what's the relationship between Y/n and Teacher Gojo?"
"Well, they are—"

So tonight we're gonna talk about Japanese urban legends.
Let's get started with
Kuchisake-onna (Slit-Mouthed Woman).
If you are unlucky enough to meet Kuchisake-onna during a solitary stroll, she will ask you if you think she is beautiful. As with Aka Manto, consider your answer like your life depends on it (since it does). If you say no, she will immediately murder you with her scissors. If you say yes, she will remove her face covering to reveal a gaping mouth that has been slit from ear to ear in a haunting smile. Then, she will ask again: say 'no' and you die, but stick with 'yes' and she will slit your mouth like hers. The only way to escape Kuchisake-onna, is to tell her that she looks average
Tumblr media
Teke Teke
Teke Teke is said to be the ghost of a woman or schoolgirl who fell on a railway line and was cut in half by an oncoming train. The vengeful spirit—outraged by her untimely death—now haunts urban areas and train stations at night. Since she no longer has legs, she drags herself on her hands and elbows, which produces a chilling “teke-teke” sound. Should you encounter Teke Teke, run! If the malicious spirit catches you, she will slice you in half with a scythe. Although she lacks legs, she is extremely fast, and has been known to keep up with cars. In some renditions of the story, she will ask you where her legs are, in which case you must reply “Meishin Expressway” in order to survive. In less hopeful iterations, your only chance of survival is to outrun her, which is completely impossible.
Tumblr media
The Red Room Curse
For those reading these tales on your computer, this story is for you. The Red Room Curse is an internet-focused story that starts with an ominous pop-up. The pop-up features a red screen with black text that reads, “Do you like the red room?,” which is accompanied by a sinister pre-recorded voice asking the same question. No matter how many times you close the pop-up, it will continue to appear until the voice has finished its question. Afterward, your entire screen will turn red and become flooded with past victims’ names. No one knows what happens next, but the receivers of the pop-up are always found dead with their blood painting the walls red, creating the titular red room. Once you receive the pop-up, it is impossible to escape your fate
Tumblr media
Momotarō – Arguably the most famous Japanese folktale, this is the quirky story of a boy born from a peach who was discovered by an old childless couple when they split the soft fruit open. Momotaro jumped out and was raised by the couple
Howling Inunaki Tunnel-The true mystery of Inunaki Village is whether or not it ever existed. Rumors of it have persisted in Japan and online since the 1990s. Supposedly located deep in the Inunaki countryside of Kyushu’s Fukuoka Prefecture, this abandoned village is said to only be accessible through Inunaki Tunnel. The stories say that all who enter the village are doomed to a violent death. These myths and tales also seem to mention that there is some sort of “official” sign stating, “The Japanese constitution is not in effect past here,” meaning all who enter are on their own to face the real or supernatural horrors that await.
Aka Manto- Aka Manto (red cloak) meets victims when they are most vulnerable: on the toilet. He wears a white mask and a long red cape. There are many variations to the legend. He holds red and blue toilet paper in some stories, but he’s only in his cape in others. However, he always asks the victim to choose a color: red or blue? Like Japan’s slit-faced woman asking, “Am I pretty?” it doesn’t matter what you answer because Aka Manto kills you regardless—choosing red rewards you with a stabbing, spilling your blood all over the stall. If you answer blue, Aka Manto either suffocates you or sucks out your blood, leaving you blue-faced and dead on the floor. So your best bet is to either ignore the fiend or run away.
Ok I think that's all for now. Hope you will all enjoy this.

Okay, so, I have a bit of a special interest in Japanese culture (call me a weeb. Idgaf. I just like learning.) Anime youtuber Akidearest just put out a video abt creepy images from Japan's side of the internet, and she went into one of my favorite stories, giving the full context, which I've never had.
The basic story is that crazed baseball fans threw a colonel sanders statue into the river in celebration of their team winning, but I feel like the full context and how it ended *this year* makes everything better.
It's 1985 (iirc), and a baseball team called the Hanshin Tigers won a big game. For context, Japan treats baseball the way the USA treats football, which is important to consider in the following events. Now, the people of Osaka had a tradition whenever their team won where anybody that looks even remotely like the star player jumps into the river. But here's the thing: the star player in the Hanshin Tigers that year was an American White Man. Since nobody looks like him, they had to do the next best thing to celebrate.
A group of rabid baseball fans went to the nearest KFC, took the Colonel Sanders statue from out front, and yote that motherfucker right into the river. It turns out that if you don't have your own white boy, store-bought ISN'T fine, because the Hanshin Tigers never won a Single Game after that for almost 40 years. This became known in Japanese pop culture as "The curse of Colonel Sanders," and is referenced EVERYWHERE. The one Aki referenced that made me actually cry laughing is the little girl NPC in the first Sonic Adventure game that warns you not to throw the statue in front of the burger place into the river. You've probably seen so many references to this in Japanese media without even realizing it.
Now, this story eventually became an urban legend. Nobody outside of those involved knew for sure if it actually happened. Until 2009, when a group of divers fished the statue out of the river. However, the hands and glasses were never found. And the Hanshin Tigers continued their now over 20 year losing streak. Everybody believed that they would never win until the statue was complete. But that was a longshot since the glasses and hands were either completely eroded or washed away.
Fast forward to 2023; our lord and savior Colonel Sanders was given a swanky new pair of glasses and some new hands. For the first time since 1985, the Hanshin Tigers won a game. The curse had been lifted, and the legacy of the Colonel Sanders statue was seemingly Proven.
But it doesn't end there. In march of this year, 2024, it was decided that the statue was too eroded to reliably maintain, so he was laid to rest. He was given a traditional burial at a shinto shrine by loyal fans, thus cementing the end of his legacy.
It makes me wonder if Japan's weird obsession with KFC and their tradition to eat it at Christmas is tied to this; it really seems that way. Anyway, that's my culture infodump of the day.

3/5/24 "Ring" JPT3391
Tumblr media
This movie was super fun to watch. A lot of the films we have been analyzing so far were ultra fine-arts type stuff, so getting to sit back and watch something that was made with the intention of having little to no major social value and commentary was kind of refreshing!
But still, it has commentary and value. Funny how things are!
Anyways, everybody knows 'Ring', a.k.a. the girl crawling out of the TV- but nobody knows her story. Ring is one of the most famous Japanese horror movies, and by extension, horror movies in the world. Personally, I consider Ring to be a 'denpa' movie because it deals with themes of electronic connection and societal reject with an air of goofiness, but it caps that off at the horror aspect, which is why I consider it to be 'analogue horror' too! Which was definitely not as explored then as it is now. I genuinely believe this movie inspired so many analogue horror trends and eventually the content that we see today.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A lot of the "Japanese spooks" we see on the net actually also follow a similar pattern, involving cursed electronics, train stations, etc. But the 'electronics' feel kind of follows new-age horror into America simply because we have technology too! You can see lots of modern day creepy pastas revolving around similar themes, such as evil mario romhacks, etc.
Below is an illustration of "Kisaragi station", which is another Japanese Urban legend/creepypasta, and the right is the "Mario Romhack Face", which is another modern Ubran legend famous in the gaming community.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We've actually seen a lot of American spinoffs and parodies of Ring as well, showing just how influential this modern-day take on technological horror was! I believe what made it so scary was its immersiveness (I mean, she literally crawled out of the TV and it looked so real...) and it's ability to be easily replicated made it a popular form of horror as well.
Aside from the horror aspect, Ring also features a very unique set of character relationships in it! A working woman who is also a devoted mother, and her divorced husband who works alongside her. It's rare enough nowadays to see a film that has a female MC, but one who is also a mother!? that remains unsexualized?! It is so refreshing to see. I was half expecting something bad to happen to her the entire time, but the film itself ended on a bittersweet note, with the death of her husband and her own survival. I also thought the scene regarding the old man's illegitimate daughter's death was really cool, because it showed the story behind the seemingly unrelated imagery that plagued the evil tape.
I felt like this movie displayed an unconventional family life while still refusing to paint the mother or father in a bad light. They had a bad marriage, yes, and they separated, but neither of them were villains. Of course the divorce wasn't portrayed positively, but neither the wife or husband were really at fault. I saw good people in a bad situation, just like the situation the Ring girl herself was in. The Esper situation did catch me by surprise however, I found that more fantastical than the idea of evil tapes, haha!

Master of Horror: Unraveling the Dark World of Junji Ito
In the realm of horror manga, there exists a master storyteller whose name strikes fear and fascination into the hearts of fans worldwide – Junji Ito. With an uncanny ability to tap into the deepest recesses of the human psyche, Ito has crafted a unique and chilling universe that leaves readers both spellbound and haunted. In this article, we delve into the enigmatic world of Junji Ito, exploring his artistry, thematic elements, and the impact he has had on the horror genre.
The Genius Behind the Pen
Junji Ito, born on July 31, 1963, in Gifu, Japan, rose to prominence in the 1990s with his eerie and imaginative manga works. His illustrations are instantly recognizable, characterized by intricately detailed, surreal, and grotesque imagery that lingers in the minds of readers long after they turn the last page.
Ito's fascination with horror and macabre art stems from his childhood, during which he devoured classic horror literature and developed a deep appreciation for the works of H.P. Lovecraft. This influence is evident in Ito's stories, as he skillfully blends cosmic horror with his unique Japanese cultural perspective.
Themes and Influences
At the core of Junji Ito's work lies a profound exploration of human fears, anxieties, and the unknown. He artfully weaves tales that transcend traditional horror tropes, often delving into the psychological and existential terror lurking within the human mind. Some of his most prevalent themes include:
Body Horror: Ito's mastery of body horror is unparalleled. He crafts tales where the human body is subjected to grotesque transformations and nightmarish distortions, often blurring the lines between the real and the surreal.
The Supernatural: Drawing inspiration from traditional Japanese folklore and urban legends, Ito introduces readers to malevolent spirits, cursed objects, and vengeful ghosts that haunt his characters relentlessly.
Isolation and Madness: Many of Ito's stories unfold in isolated settings, with characters descending into madness as they confront the incomprehensible horrors before them.
Fatal Obsessions: Ito's characters are frequently driven by obsessions that lead them down dark and destructive paths, exploring the depths of human obsession and the price paid for pursuing forbidden desires and impulses.
Landmark Works
Junji Ito has created an impressive body of work that continues to captivate readers worldwide. Some of his landmark works include:
"Uzumaki": A chilling tale set in a small Japanese town cursed by spirals, where the obsession with the shape takes a horrific toll on its inhabitants.
"Tomie": Featuring the eponymous beautiful and deadly girl who inexplicably keeps returning from the dead, driving those around her to madness and murder.
"Gyo": A nightmarish story of walking fish-like creatures that bring pestilence and terror to the world.
"Junji Ito's Cat Diary: Yon & Mu": A departure from his usual horror, this is a humorous autobiographical manga about Ito's life with his cats, Yon and Mu.
The Junji Ito Phenomenon
Junji Ito's influence extends far beyond the manga world. His works have inspired multiple adaptations, including animated series, live-action films, and even video games. Fans around the globe celebrate his genius by creating fan art, fan fiction, creating merchandise with his designs and participating in conventions dedicated to horror and manga.
Conclusion
As an artist who has read his book 'Uzumaki', I thoroughly enjoyed my reading experience and think his attention to detail in each of his drawings, plus his endless imagination for truly horrific scenes makes him stand out compared to other artists. In conclusion Junji Ito stands as an artistic enigma, a brilliant mind capable of summoning the darkest nightmares and phobias with the stroke of his pen. His contributions to the horror genre have secured him a place among the most revered and influential creators of our time. Whether you are a devoted manga enthusiast or a newcomer to the world of horror, Junji Ito's works promise an unparalleled experience of terror and wonder, reminding us all that even in the darkest corners of our imagination, true artistry can be found.

wanted to compile a tiny list of one-off hananene aus i had been thinking about (mostly around the majority of spooky season) but never really found time to either expand upon or just did one thing about it and never continued since lol
feel free to scream at me if you want any of these turned into something more coherent haha
the "i work as a pizza delivery person and also live in the same neighborhood as this guy who turns out does cult rituals in his house. also he gave me his number" au. you can see how this goes already
amane's the so-called hero and is sent by prince minamoto to defeat a witch named yako, who they think is evil. instead of a battle to the death yako basically just tells him "you know what, kid. i got a better idea. i won't mess with minamoto ever again, but only if you manage to make my apprentice fall in love with you within the span of a year." her apprentice is nene, who's quite sweet but a little gullible. he's like "oh boy this is gonna be easy" but newsflash they both fall in love with each other because i will make that happen and you can't stop me
screen-bound sadako-kun. instead of the girl's toilet he has long hair and haunts a cursed video tape. nene is the unfortunate(?) person who finds the tape but ultimately he doesn't really find it in himself to curse her to eternal suffering because goddamnit she's so nice even to someone like him. he would curse those who made fun of her legs, though, if she let him.
or better yet. canonverse but hanako and sadako are relatives. probably his aunt. he introduces her to his friends. some funny shit happens or whatever. or just any au i have where hanako is actually relatives with other japanese urban legends. lol
"hello, this is your beloved heroine, yashiro nene! i was just trying to make some soup this fine evening, but instead for some reason i ended up summoning the literal devil himself! one good thing that came out of this is he actually liked my soup and said he'd come over more for dinner. anyways i think we're married now or something."
dear my living dead au. nene's already one of the living dead even before meeting hanako, and agrees to be bound to him to a contract so she could remain walking on earth. they are both so fucked up in their own ways but goddamnit they have each other and that's what matters akdjkabdhhsj
amane is secretly a serial killer. nene's the ghost haunting his house and he can see her and they both get along. one slight problem though. he's actually the guy who killed her somewhere in the past and he doesn't have the heart to tell her that because he may or may have not become very fond of her so he just has to constantly make shit up while "helping" her solve her own murder
an au where it's literally just the "everytime i get home, my wife pretends to be dead" song
the guy in the apartment next door is a necromancer and just resurrected his dead girlfriend. also happened last week before that is that a woman's grave essentially got ransacked and the body stolen. there isn't any correlation with those things, right?
