26/11/22-Snow Bunting and more at Milford-on-Sea  

We came here today to look for this bird that had been around, a species I was hoping I’d get a chance to see before the end of the year and as we walked towards the cafe’ we saw it was present straight away. Then we got some stunning views of this bird that has the beauty, texture and colour of a rich wedding cake. We saw it a few times whilst here for a bit this afternoon, seeing it fly high too which we’d rarely seen in past sightings of the species. It looked like a paper aeroplane gliding through the air as it flashed the bright white of its wings. These are birds that are known to be obliging for seeing when they turn up and we’ve had some amazing views of them in my five previous sightings but these were surreal and wonderful close views and some of my best ever of this species. Like the one we saw last November at Hook-with-Warsash and other of my past sightings just arriving and seeing the bird straight away is so memorable. It was a true pleasure to see and take photos of this fantastic bird, I so love seeing these, and it brought me such joy to see this bird. Joy it was great to share with a few others, fellow bird/photography enthusiasts and passers by. I took the first four and final three pictures in this photoset of it, it was so good to see it on the varied surfaces of vegetation, muddy areas and the paving by the cafe. 

This is such a fascinating and eye catching little bird. It was interesting to see it wet from the rain. It’s my most westerly ever sighting of a Snow Bunting as my five previous sightings were all at coastal spots east of home. It’s one of my best birds seen this year and is my 203rd bird of the year in a nice surge of year ticks I’ve had this month so far to take my year list into the 200s after reaching the 200 species seen this year at the end of September and making it my highest ever. It’s interesting how many of my recent year ticks have been species that were star birds of my 2019 the previous year list of mine this year beat to be my highest. It’s my fourth bunting species seen this year after Reed Bunting, Corn Bunting and Yellowhammer in another great year I’ve had seeing these wondrous and varied little birds.

Also at Milford it was lovely to see a Pied Wagtail intimately that associated with the Snow Bunting for a bit seeing them fly into each other at one point which was great, I have had a good time for seeing Pied Wagtails this month and getting chances for photos. I took the fifth and sixth pictures in this photoset of the Pied Wagtail. I also liked seeing Black-headed Gull here well with intimate views in the car park and Herring Gull over the sea as well as some Turnstones flying over the choppy sea. It did get wet whilst there so was another November Saturday seeing a rare bird in the rain after Black Redstart at Southsea Castle three weeks ago. I saw Black Redstart and Snow Bunting on the same day at Southsea Castle and the place I‘ve seen Snow Bunting most Hill Head respectively in 2017 so I always associate these with each other. It was nice to take in the views of a dramatic day here in the wet and windy weather, with Hurst Castle and the beach and spit looking nice as shown in the seventh picture I took in this photoset today. The Needles loomed nicely in the distance over on the Isle of Wight and it was interesting to see them disappear as the rain came on more. I saw a nice flower here possible a bit of thrift.

On the way here it was nice to see so much of interest from the car; some blossom on trees visible from beside the motorway near Totton which I noticed last winter another strange seasonal sight, Lower Test looking more flooded than I recall seeing before and a selection of roadside and garden flowers. This included yarrow, ragwort, hogweed and some red hot poker in someone’s garden I believe. I saw the elegant sight of a hovering Kestrel from the car which was memorable too and nice autumnal colour on the way back with lots of mistletoe seen nicely on journeys too. As we passed my old college Barton Peveril tonight on the way back I noticed the crane visible from my room and Lakeside which I saw yesterday is here for some work they’re doing as are a few other bits of tall machinery I have noticed in the view from my room the last few months. When we moved in here I had a few months of college left and I enjoyed not having too much of a walk - but an enjoyable one - to college on the days spent at this house then but it’s still fascinating to know where something visible from my room actually is. I enjoyed the spider near a crack in the hallway and the Silver-sided Sector spider the other side of the window at home tonight.

Decatur Micro Wedding by the Atlanta Wedding Photographers at Atlanta Artistic Weddings

This week the Atlanta Wedding photographers at Atlanta Artistic Weddings got to shoot an intimate micro wedding in Decatur for a great couple! The couple lived within walking distance to the Decatur Square, where you have the park and historic Decatur Courthouse. Their venue was centrally located to everything, which was awesome!

I started by taking photos of the guys while they were getting ready. They were working hard and the best man/ring bearer took his job very seriously. He knew exactly where the rings were and where he was going to keep them during the wedding to keep them safe. As you can see in the photo above, the best man made sure the groom’s collar and boutonniere were perfect. He wanted his groom to look good for the bride on this special day. This best man/ring bearer was a real pro and did a great job!

Then came the photos of the bride. She got ready at a hotel near the wedding location. This hotel is where the bride’s family was staying as well, so she had the love and support of family as she got ready for the wedding. The bride’s sister was right by her side and helped her to get in to the dress. The sister also helped with makeup and hair.

As I always say, my favorite weddings are the ones where the bride and groom make the wedding their own. This bride did not disappoint. After she put on the beautiful, classic, form-fitting mermaid cut dress, she put on her shoes. She chose comfort and style with some cool kicks that reflected the couple’s personality.

The ceremony took place at their community’s common area. They set up with a small group of chairs and had the wedding ceremony lit by candles. The candlelight was perfect for such a intimate wedding. The bride’s father walked her down the aisle to her fiancé. The guests who attended were all family and friends of the bride and grooms. The couple was truly surrounded by love!

After the ceremony, we took the family photos. Then, the couple and I took a quick walk to the Decatur Square where we took a few fun photos. They were such a fun and sweet couple. It was a great honor to be a small part of such a special day! Congrats Shaina and JL!

The Hidden Gems of Los Angeles

There’s no keeping secrets in a city fixated on discovering the next big thing. But Los Angeles always stretches past the horizon, so vast that the other side of the 405 feels like unfamiliar territory no matter where you are. So, from a chandelier tree to a flamboyant underground supper club, tonight we’re turning our attention to 8 hidden gems in the City of Angels that elude most guidebooks but are definitely worth checking out.

The Chandelier Tree

What started as one man’s gift to his neighborhood has become a must-see.  The century-old camphor hung with 34 vintage fixtures has  hosted engagements and weddings, as well as countless date nights and shoots for brides, fashion models and music videos, but it’s an easy attraction to miss if you don’t have an Angelino to bring it to your attention.

The Bronson “Bat” Caves

Channel your inner Batman at this old quarry which has been a filming location for dozens of films and television shows, including the original Batman series! The Bronsin Caves are the man-made results of gravel quarrying done by the Union Rock Company in Griffith Park at the the beginning of the 20th century, and although you won’t find them in most guidebooks, countless Angelinos visit them every day to let out their inner noire vigilante.

The caves rose more in popularity in 2013 thanks to an innovative photography project by L.A. based photographer Brice Bischoff.  The project is comprised of a series of long exposures in which brightly colored sheets of paper are moved in and out of the frame in a controlled manner, creating a colorful miasma emerging from the darkness of the caves. The results, as pictured above, are breathtaking.

The Wayfarers Chapel

The Wayfarers Chapel in Rancho Palos Verdes feels like a coastal oasis! Designed by Lloyd Wright as a “tree chapel,” it is set among a stand of redwoods with elegant windows that blend the spaces to create the sensation of being both outside and inside. So if you’re the type to enjoy spending a few hours in quiet contemplation or meditation while surrounded by the beauty of nature, this is the place for you. Just make sure to come by very early or very late, as thsi peaceful chappel is usually swarming with tourists from high noon to nightfall.

The Old Place

The Old Place restaurant nestled in the Santa Monica Mountains near Agoura Hills is a memorable stop for hearty food like chicken dumpling soup, its steamed clams (which are a must and plentiful enough to share), and its famous sirloin steak.

Founded by actor Tom Runyon, the Old Place looks something like a frontier saloon with its weathered boards, porch where guests go to smoke or enjoy the quiet, 20-foot bar and five booths with high sides and built-in benches. There are a few small tables jammed together at the back, and the restaurant’s walls are decorated with vintage photos of the area and memorabilia, including write-ups of the restaurant in the old days.

However, The Old Place does come with a downside.

Due to its size, it only has 5 booths and three tables so reservations are usually for 4 or more only, and even with the 30’ long antique bar down the center of the restaurant serves as a giant dining table, the place can feel crammed when there’s too many people.   Fortunately, the Cornell Winery & Tasting room is next door, so you can enjoy a nice visit there while waiting to be seated.

Disco Dining Club

According to its website, ‘Disco Dining Club is a thematic food and drink event that revels in all the excess, debauchery, and hedonism of disco’.

An ode to food, art, excess and getting weird, the irreverent, theatrical supper club replicates the mystique and debauchery—and especially the wild costumes and forthright sexuality—of the surrealist’s own fetes. The multicourse meal is prepped by a rotating cast of L.A. chefs, and tickets disappear faster than will your amuse-bouche. 

Installments -each centered around a different historical era, artistic movement, or iconic piece of culture- include DJ sets, costumed actors, dance parties, open bars, live music, mimes, decadent bites, joint pairings and extravagant gift bags, all intended to recreate the colourful moments of the past through the lens of a theatrical dinner party.

In return, they ask but one thing of their guests: To Consume Everything.

Magic|Bar / Sushi Bar

Hidden in an Encino strip mall, you will find a place unlike anything else you will find in Los Angeles; a restaurant within a restaurant, where you can enjoy spectacural magic shows or incredible suchi depending on the day.

On Mondays and Tuesdays, head upstairs into gastropub Woodley Proper and enter the unmarked sliding wood door to find  Benjamin Schrader’s weekly  pop-up sleight-of-hand saloon.  There, the magic is intimate and happens just a few feet away, making each card trick all the more impressive. A dozen lucky patrons sip specially crafted cocktails and have their minds blown by a rotating roster of guest performers, all of whom, also are headlining magicians at the Magic Castle.  Decks are cut. Booze is imbibed. And poof! Just like that, at least for an hour or so, the outside world disappears. 

From Wednesday to Sunday, take the mall’s escalator to the second floor, look for a tiny brass plaque and ring the doorbell. You’ll be ushered into an intimate bar for a welcome cocktail, then led through the kitchen to the eight-seat sushi counter. There, you’ll find modern, decadent nigiri like truffle-topped chutoro, hamachi with sweet-corn pudding, and torched bone marrow. 

Part of a nesting-egg concept from Top Chef’s Phillip Frankland Lee, seats disappear fast at both concepts, so online reservations are a must.  

Restoration Hardware Rooftop

West Hollywood is well stocked with spectacular rooftop views—that is, if you can shell out for brunch, drinks or an overnight stay. But for seekers of alfresco views who’ve blown their entire budget on parking alone, try Restoration Hardware.

Yes, I know, but bear with me here.

If you’re tired after all that decor shopping, venture upstairs at its Melrose location and you’ll happen upon an open- air patio that’s a perfect spot for some R&R. Grab a comfy seat under a canopy of twinkle-light–wrapped olive trees and survey L.A.’s poshest hillsides.

To be clear, as a privately owned store, RH’s rooftop isn’t quite a public park, so don’t pack a picnic. But if you were to stroll up there with, say, a cup of coffee from Alfred and a magazine to flip through, well it just seems like an ideal place to...research your new patio-furnishing plans.

Lost Spirits Distillery

The Arts District is a maze of brick warehouses, but look for the one splashed with a mural of a woman in a top hat and you’ll find a bizarre booze experience that offers whimsy at every turn.

This reservation-only distillery tour feels more like a theme park, beginning with a chatty computer system, Tessa, who introduces the journey in the velvet-draped entry hall. Before you know it, you’re sampling high- octane rum and climbing aboard a raft, which floats you down a river that’s actually part of the distillery’s cooling system.

You’ll trek through jungles (rooms and halls lush with potted plants), hop on a time-travel merry-go-round (a dizzying floating platform) and visit the Island of Dr. Moreau (an H.G. Wells–inspired hideout), all while learning about—and tasting—the mad science of Lost Spirits’ process: a combination of heat, bright light and various wood chips that simulate (and expedite) the traditional barrel-aging process for rum, brandy and whiskey. 

The talking birds in the gift shop will try to sell you a few bottles, and, honestly, how can you say no to a talking bird?

The Wildflower Wedding on Silver Star Sampler

This sampler is pretty unique – we spent a lot of our wedding day hiking down Silver Star Mountain with a pretty big bridal party. The views were simply intoxicating.

Our day begins near Okanagan lake. This is a backyard wedding, and so it’s small, intimate, and cozy. As always, we begin with our detail shots.

The house was absolutely charming. This is right by the large rose garden, the scent misted along the whole yard.

Over at the guys, they had just arrived from the barbers, so it was time to suit up.

And before we knew it, he was ready for a first look.

Time to head back to the girls!

In a bedroom tucked to the side, they were busy fitting the veil and the dress.

A few words of wisdom from mother, and we were on our way.

Outside, our groom was eagerly awaiting his brand new bride. She was an absolute vision, he couldn’t stop looking at her.

The ceremony was lovely. Hand written vows, talking about long canoe trips and hikes all over, past adventures and food poisoning.

And then, the first kiss!

The plan for the day was set from the start – after family photos, drive to Silver Star, and ride the gondola to the top.

The helpful staff repeatedly warned us of the high wind warnings, not even guessing we’re gonna hike down.

Let’s talk about this bridal party.

There wasn’t a serious moment. Everyone remembered to pack hiking shoes, so it was just a fun wedding-day hike, with the most intoxicating views in all the Okanagan.

And we still got plenty of gorgeous shots of the couple. Everywhere from the firewatch to the forests to the mountains.

Unfortunately, though, this is where I’ll have to leave you. Keep in mind, this isn’t all the photos. This is a whopper of a sampler though, 48 of the photos taken today.
