Journal Entry 11 - Chosen concept
The key target audience for this project is the existing residents and workers of the Northshore Hamilton area, specifically those who work and utilise the maker space and wheelhouse. I chose to create a project for this specific target market because I thought it met the criteria for the key challenge best. It is an original concept designed to “enhance interconnection, inclusiveness, and accessibility to and within the newly formed Enterprise and Innovation precinct housing The Workshops and Maker Spaces and The Wheelhouse”. I believe targeting the people who use the space would make the biggest impact to enhance those elements, supported by the relationship shared between community, food and culture. My main project inspiration was Barangaroo, but also just my everyday life. Knowing the importance of food and its power to bring people together inspired me to create this project as it feels like the missing piece to this space. This project offers a unique solution that seamlessly aligns with the key challenge objectives.

Journal Entry 10 - Research
After measuring my two ideas against the success criteria and conducting further research I believe that idea 1 of creating a shared food space suits the project and client brief best.
I researched the relationship and interconnectedness between food and community.
The findings from a University of Oxford study imply that dining with others strengthens social ties, well-being sentiments, and a person's sense of contentment and community integration (University of Oxford, 2017). Sharing food with people from other cultures can be a wonderful way for them to get to know and respect one another's customs. People can become closer through this sharing of cuisine and cultural practices (Himat, 2024). “Food transcends mere sustenance -it’s a tool for inspiration, innovation, and growth. Community-focused businesses provide an opportunity to support local communities in more ways than one” (Food Liability Insurance Program, 2023).
Food businesses that are community-focused promote economic growth, foster a feeling of community, and celebrate diversity in local communities (Food Liability Insurance Program, 2023). They stimulate spending and create jobs, which boost local economies (Food Liability Insurance Program, 2023). These companies, which include food trucks and catered events, act as meeting places where people connect over shared meals and tales, fostering a stronger sense of community (Food Liability Insurance Program, 2023). Through the exhibition of varied cultures and culinary traditions, they encourage tolerance and acknowledgement of local identities, enhancing the vibrancy and connectivity of neighbourhoods (Food Liability Insurance Program, 2023).

Journal Entry 8 - More ideation
After mind mapping, I have decided to go with challenge 1 to create “solutions that enhance interconnection, inclusiveness, and accessibility to and within the newly formed Enterprise and Innovation precinct housing The Workshop and Maker Spaces and The Wheelhouse.” I think the vision for this area is best suited to me as a designer and creator. I believe I am community-minded and that I would be better suited to this challenge. A community centre is no longer an option I’m thinking of as I think it is better suited to challenge 2 at the Maritime Green. My two current ideas are listed below.
Idea 1)
Creating a shared food space, where employees and users of the space can come, sit, and eat together.
Creating a space to gather and collaborate between businesses/fields
Encourage the makers, workshop, wheelhouse and other local employees and businesses to use the space to eat, drink and share
Can showcase indigenous foods and recipes – which would complement the indigenous community garden project
Idea 2)
Creating a market area for The Workshop, maker spaces, Men’s shed, etc. can sell their pieces to the public.
A space that brings the community together where Northshore makers meet Brisbane shoppers

Journal Entry 4 - Existing project inspiration
After today's tutorial (March 13) and the mention of Barangaroo, it gave me a few ideas. I have recently visited Sydney and during my time there I travelled to and spent some time at Barangaroo.
At Barangaroo, I visited an eatery called The Canteen, around lunchtime on a Monday. The Canteen is in Central Barangaroo which is surrounded by many commercial buildings. It was hard to find a table and the multiple take-away restaurants all had lines of at least 3 people each. Similarly to Barangaroo, Northshore has an industrial area (Eagle Farm) located just 3kms away and the commercial area of Portside within walking distance.
I think a similar idea/project would be successful as I currently work in the industrial area of Eagle Farm where there is minimal choice to buy lunch out. I take my lunch with me every shift and keep two-minute noodles in my locker for this very reason. If there were more accessible food options to purchase for lunch, I would probably buy myself lunch at least once a week. We have a coffee van come to our on-site car park every morning, and I witness at least two Uber Eats deliveries every day. Surrounding my office building are an abundant number of warehouses that have trucks and cars constantly coming and going from the area. I think a venue like this could also benefit from the general foot traffic of the area. Although the target of the project would be the employees at the workshops and wheelhouse I think it could also bring in other local employees in the area.
After seeing the success of The Canteen, I think Northshore could benefit from a project with similar elements. I strongly believe a food venue would be very successful in the Northshore area.

Journal Entry 1 - Initial thoughts, observations and impressions
I wasn’t able to attend the site visit, but these are my first impressions and notes of the site upon watching the site tour recordings.
- Olympic Athletes Village offers numerous opportunities with vacant spaces, attracting new tenants like Pink Flamingo for shows and cabaret.
- Free parking spaces will decrease, but extended bus services and a new city cat stop will be available, enhancing accessibility.
- Established facilities like Northshore Men's Shed and upcoming additions such as a she shed, music school, circus school, and Brisbane Tool Library contribute to the diverse offerings.
- Development programs for emerging indigenous artists and a traditional owner's artist hub add cultural vibrancy.
- Wheelhouse, a modular building, will offer co-working space with river views and a coffee shop, catering to micro businesses with a retail focus.
- Bridgeman Building, an indigenous construction company, and Northshore Hamilton EV chargers are prominent features.
- Town Hall provides a bookable space for various events, with consistent weekend bookings and amenities like a commercial kitchen.
- Parking regulations ensure safety and accessibility, with flood preparedness measures in place.
- Building awareness and maintaining foot traffic during the week are essential considerations, with ongoing flood management efforts addressing overflow from nearby areas, not the river itself.
