“Head Over Heels is a cozy, young adult novel by Yukina Miura, published in 2005. The story is about a young lady’s man who suffers a serious head injury and is forced back to his hometown in order to have his family watch over him while he recovers. His recovery takes years, and when he learns that his old crush ended up dating someone else, he ends up staying home with his family and enjoying their company even after he recovers. He ends up not focusing much more on romantic relationships and stays to care for his elderly parents and younger sister instead. Overall it’s quite a tame, fluffy story about the importance of family. Since it’s so popular, it’s purchasable in nearly any bookstore.”
That was Taro’s favored book for the week according to what Info-Chan just sent her. And it was the book that he was allowing Osana to borrow for the day. Ayano would make sure to buy her own copy of it after school. Maybe she could buy an extra and give it to Taro as a gift. He would certainly need it after Ayano screwed up the copy that he gave Osana.
Ayano discreetly follows Osana as she practically skips over to the awaiting Raibaru. Leaning against a tree casually, Ayano listens in on their conversation.
“That actually went so well!” Osana says, looking down at the book. “Taro says that he’s had this book for a really long time and that he got it from his sister, Hanako.”
Raibaru smiles, proud of her friend. “I remember her! Do you plan on reading it before class?” She asks.
“Nah, I think I’d rather read it during lunch, where he usually reads it.” Osana smiles, her cheeks flaring pink in embarrassment. “I.. think reading it there will make me feel closer to him, y’know?”
“D’awww, Osana! That’s so cute!” Raibaru giggles, making Osana even more embarrassed. “I think that’ll certainly help you immerse yourself while you’re reading it. You should hang onto it until then, though, okay? Wouldn’t wanna lose it.”
Osana nods, “Got it! I’ll take good care of it.” She assures Raibaru, her smile just about as big as Ayano’s scowl as the two made their way inside the school.
“Hey, there, Aishi.” Ayano flinches once again at the unexpected voice. “Sorry, did I scare ya?” Amise asks, folding her arms behind her with a kind smile.
Ayano frowns, but attempts to soften her expression to seem a little less upset about Amise’s sudden appearance. “Did you need something?” She asks, putting her phone in the pocket of her skirt.
“I just wanted to say hello.” Amise claims, placing a hand on her chest. “But you seem a bit tense. Is there something troubling you?” She asks casually, possibly more casual than Ayano ever did.
Hesitating at first, Ayano eventually speaks up. “...yes.. I want to, ah..” Ayano pauses, wondering what exactly she should ask for. Info-Chan told her yesterday that Amise was someone who “enjoyed helping people” and actively searched for those in need. If she liked helping so much, surely she could do something for Ayano regarding Osana.
“I… want to get to know someone a little better. But.. I’m not entirely sure how to get closer to her. I was hoping to be able to do her a favor, but I’m not sure how to approach her.” Ayano claims, hoping that this could be interpreted to Amise doing Osana’s favor for her.
Amise hums in thought, pulling up a hand to her chin. “Well, I’d be happy to help if you really need it. Who is it you wanted to get closer to?”
Ayano peeks from behind the tree, pointing to Osana’s back. “Her.” She leans back behind the tree and crosses her arms. “She doesn’t seem very approachable. Oftentimes she’s whining obnoxiously about what she dislikes.” Ayano explains, although her excuse fell off when she almost began complaining.
“Is that right..” Amise smiles, “I heard she lost a little phone charm in the maze somewhere. I looked for it but for the life of me I couldn’t find it! Maybe you’ll have better luck?” She offers, folding her hands back behind her back, where they seemed most comfortable.
Ayano nods. “Maybe. I’ll think about it. Thanks.”
Smiling, Amise nods back and continues on her way to the school. As she does, Ayano gets another message from Info-Chan.
Info-Chan: You should try that.
Yan-Chan: The maze? I plan on it.
Info-Chan: No, the tasks.
Info-Chan: Ask students if they need any help with something so that more students see you as a reliable person.
Yan-Chan: I thought I already did that.
Info-Chan: You asked “Do you have a task for me to do?”
Info-Chan: Which is why all you got in return was a bunch of extra homework.
Yan-Chan: If that was such a problem, then why didn’t you explain that to me earlier?
Info-Chan: You didn’t ask.
Ayano sighs, shoving her phone back into her pocket in exhasperation. She couldn’t stand Info some times. Walking into the school, Ayano looks around. She assumed that when Info-Chan said to ask if anyone needs help, she meant to ask when someone was in need. So, approach someone when they seem troubled.
As it turned out, one of the more unexpected students seemed to be upset, although clearly trying to hide it. “Mai Waifu”, the stranger of the Gaming Club seemed to be silently fuming at something on her phone, and even more furiously tapping and swiping. This seemed like a good chance to get a decent reputation.
Clearing her throat, Ayano approaches Mai, although she was hesitant about how to present herself persona-wise. “Hey, Mai.” Ayano smiles, placing her hands in her pockets laxly. “You look a bit upset about somethin’. Is there anything you need help with?” She ends up going with something calm, “chill” even, hoping that she could seem like someone to talk to and not react extremely.
“Oh, Yano-Chan!” Mai sighs, “Jeez, if I can be honest.. I didn’t realize that appearing as I do would be so… stressful…” She groans, her voice quieter and her appearance a little less animated than usual.
Ayano tilts her head to the side a bit. “Y’mean all… anime esc?” She asks, Mai nodding with an upset frown. “Is bullying getting out of hand at all?”
Mai sighs again, “No, it’s more of an online thing. I mean.. I know there are perverts all over the place online, but… I mean… it’s like they totally ignore all of my “hey i’m a minor” and “not into nsfw messages” warnings! I just..” She deflates, frowning at her phone. “I wish there was a way to, like.. Filter out the messages I get? Or just automatically block perverted texts or something?"
Ayano hums in thought. “Weeeeell… uh..” She hesitates, but quickly gets another text from Info-Chan. “..one sec.”
Info-Chan: Tell her you can install a similar “ad blocker” for annoying users.
“I can try installing an ad blocker for, like, annoying users, if you want.” Ayano offers, receiving another text and adding on. “It takes some time, but it can block users who constantly use new emails and accounts to continue harassing you.” She explains.
“Forreal?!” Mai clears her throat. “I-I mean, that would be totally awesome, Yano-Chan! Just let me… uh..” She quickly taps something else on her phone, likely deleting apps that she didn’t want Ayano to see. “Okay, here.”
Ayano takes the phone with a nod and Mai adds, “There’s a, uh.. “Games” folder. Just ignore that. I’m sure anything you need to do will have nothing to do with that. Okay?”
“Got it.” Ayano nods. “I’ll be up in the Computer Lab if you wanna check up on me.”
“Thanks! Now I just have to find something to do…” Mai wonders, before ultimately heading towards the Gaming Club.
Ayano looks back down to her own phone.
Yan-Chan: What exactly am I doing?
Info-Chan: You’re going to get me into that phone.
Yan-Chan: And the “ad blocker esc” BS?
Info-Chan: Not BS.
Info-Chan: I’ll install that as well, but in return you’re going to give me access to her phone. Including that “games” folder.
Yan-Chan: Why the games folder?
Info-Chan: Blackmail.
Info-Chan: As a matter of fact, head to the lab and start with the games folder. We’ll worry about the ad-blocker afterwards.
Yan-Chan: If you say so.
__
Ayano frowned. She didn’t understand why exactly Mai didn’t want Ayano seeing this “Games” folder. She was in the gaming club, it wasn’t strange that she had games on her phone. Even if those games were really just cringy reverse harems. Is this really a big secret for Mai? Considering how she dressed, this seemed like something one would expect.
Info-Chan: Perfect.
Info-Chan: Now plug the phone into the computer.
Yan-Chan: Are you connected to the computers?
Info-Chan: Of course.
Info-Chan: You could say that every electronic inside Akedemi is already under my control.
Info-Chan: Outside of the students’ phones of course, unless they’re connected to the computers.
Info-Chan: Anyway, use the chord.
Yan-Chan: Right.
Ayano plugs the phone into the computer with a USB chord and types in a URL that Info-Chan sends her. She couldn’t recognize the sight but was able to navigate it fine with Info’s help. All of it seemed to be one of those sights with nothing but links and no actual effort put into programming it to look like anything recognizable.
Info-Chan: Now download it.
Yan-Chan: What’s with all of the random sites?
Info-Chan: To keep people from tracking it, of course.
Info-Chan: Locate the phone in the files and click “pair”.
Ayano does as she’s told, and Info-Chan pauses for a moment before texting her a couple minutes later.
Info-Chan: Perfect.
Info-Chan: I’ve uploaded the app onto her phone.
Info-Chan: And in turn gained access to her most prized posession :)
Yan-Chan: So my job’s done?
Info-Chan: Yes.
Info-Chan: I suggest hanging onto her phone and snooping around until Mai comes looking for you.
Yan-Chan: Noted.
Unfortunately, despite this genius plan, Mai walked in as soon as Ayano unplugged the phone. “Hey, Yano-Chan! How’s that progress going?”
“Mai. I’ve just about finished it.” Ayano claims, placing one hand in her pocket and handing Mai her phone with the other hand. Immediately, though, she cringes, realizing that she could have just said that she wasn’t done yet and was taking a break. Unfortunately, she couldn’t think that fast.
“Perfect! You’re totes a genius, Yano-Chan!” Mai said, checking her phone to make sure everything was in order. “Thank you so much! You’re the best!” She says, flicking her a peace sign before scurrying off to whatever was her next destination.
Ayano was sure that that at least got her someone to put in a good word for her. That was, she supposed, the least she could hope for at the moment.
__
Lunch time hit sooner than Ayano expected. While everyone headed to a designated place to eat, Ayano tailed Osana and Raibaru downstairs to Taro’s fountain. For a couple of minutes, all Ayano did was watch Osana read as Raibaru swiped on her phone and did random stretches. Just a reminder that she’s keeping fit.
They still had almost half an hour of lunchtime, which meant if Osana decided not to take a break, Ayano could lose her chance to sabotage this moment for Osana. Which would be lovely since she was previously so excited about the book. But regardless, Ayano couldn’t afford to sit and wait around. Maybe there was something she could do while she waited..
Ayano hummed, tapping her fingers on her crossed arms in thought. It was then that Osana’s missing phone charm came to mind. The maze, huh? It was pretty small, generally speaking, and just outside. She was sure that she could get in and out with no real problem.
With that objective in mind, Ayano quickly walks out of the school and left towards the hedge maze. With the process of elimination, Ayano was easily able to make it to the center of the maze, where a cat charm lay in the grass. Ayano already knew that Osana seemed to like cats, but she assumed that now she new for certain.
Before she could turn around, she felt someone behind her, and quickly turned around and snatched the wrist that was outstretched to her. “Oh!” Tsubaki jumped, shocked by Ayano’s sudden move. Tsubaki Uesugi was the little red head from the gardening club, Ayano recalled, slowly releasing her wrist.
“So sorry, Yano-Chan.” Tsubaki rubs her wrist lightly, looking a bit flustered before clearing her throat. “I, uh..” She looked down to the hedge clippers she had dropped. “..I’m here sprucing up the hedge walls a bit. I didn’t mean to sneak up on you like that.. Sorry.” She apologized again, giving Ayano an apologetic smile.
Ayano frowned but relaxed her muscles in order to seem a bit less aggressive. “It’s okay.” She said evenly, picking the charm she’d dropped back up. She noticed that Tsubaki must have approached her due to needing something and decided that it might be smart to change her “persona” so to speak.
Tsubaki cleared her throat, clearly wanting to say something, but being unsure of how to do so. “That’s a, uh.. lovely little charm you have there.” She compliments, smiling shyly.
Nodding, Ayano smiles as she straightens her back and places a hand on her hip. “Thank you. I’m returning it to its owner.” She claims, flipping her ponytail over her shoulder swiftly. “Did you need something, then Tsubaki?” Ayano asks, laxly examining the phone charm.
“Y..” Tsubaki clears her throat. “..yes, actually. Before classes started, Mai was blabbing- I-I mean chatting with me about how you helped her with a, uh.. pervert blocker of sorts?” She started, tapping her fingers on the hedge clippers lightly. “N..Not that I have a similar problem or anything. She just said that you were very reliable and.. Ah..”
Ayano couldn’t entirely tell if Tsubaki was just general shy, still shaken, or didn’t like asking for favors. Either way, Ayano had trouble keeping up her graceful posture, likely out of general exhaustion. “Go on.” Ayano encouraged gently.
“Right, sorry.” Tsubaki exhales. “You see.. Uekiya gave me a special club assignment for today. She wanted me to get rid of the butterfly bush that grows in the hedge because it often spreads too far and ruins the look of the hedge, but…” She sighs, hanging her head a bit. “I’m just having so much trouble. It’s like every time I turn around, there’s another blasted flower sprouting out!” Tsubaki raises a hand to her lips sheepishly, “Ah.. excuse my language.”
Ayano points to the flowers. “Do you need me to help you cut out these flowers, then?” She guesses. Tsubaki had already seemed to have done a bunch of the work, so if all she needed Ayano to do was finish off what she’d started, then Ayano could likely do it.
“Yes, please.” Tsubaki folded her hands together, looking down shyly. “Of course, you don’t have to do it if you don’t want to.. Or if you’re unable to. I mean- computer issues might be your main talent, and that’s okay!”
“I can do it, Tsubaki. Is there anything specific I need to know about this task?” Ayano asks, making sure to flip her hair over her shoulder again for added “graceful” affect. Maybe changing her hairstyle could eventually add to that?
Tsubaki claps her hands together with a bright smile. “Thank you! U-Um.. the only necessities is that you bring most of them back to the Gardening Club- if you need a bag for them there’s one right at the entrance of the maze. And, uh.. Also, it needs to be done before club time.. preferably.”
“Of course.” Ayano smiles gracefully, taking the clippers from Tsubaki. “As soon as I’m done with this errand I’ll get right to it.” She assures the redhead, nodding to her.
“Thank you so much, Yano-Chan!” Tsubaki places her hand together and bows her head briefly, before scurrying off. “I’ll be eating lunch with my club if you need anything!” She calls as she leaves.
Ayano checks the time on her phone. Despite most of that conversation being Tsubaki mumbling and stuttering, that whole interaction hadn’t taken too long at all. As Ayano leaves the hedge maze, she leaves the clippers just inside of the maze exit, hoping that that prevented anyone from picking it up and putting it away.
__
Since Osana hadn’t taken a break from what Ayano’s seen, that meant that she needed to cause a distraction herself. The charm might be the best way to do that, ironically. Casually, Ayano brisks past the southern exit of the plaza, dropping the charm that thankfully made a light clinking sound that Raibaru seemed to notice.
“Hey, you..” Raibaru attempts to call out to Ayano, but notices what the item is. “Hey, Osana is that your phone charm?” She asks, finishing her stretches and poining to where Ayano had dropped it. As she does Ayano walks over to the west side of the plaza, avoiding the girls’ gazes.
Osana lifts her head in surprise. “Huh? Where? It wouldn’t be here, it’s..” Osana stands up, placing the book onto the fountain. “Oh, hey, it is here! How the heck did it get here..?” She wonders, her and Raibaru both walking over to pick it up. Ayano tells herself that this is the only time she will be thankful for Raibaru tailing Osana everywhere and swiftly walks past the fountain, knocking the book into the water. Thankfully just as silently, Ayano travels to the opposite doorway and stands behind it, out of Osana or Raibaru’s view.
“That’s some luck, isn’t it Osana?” Raibaru hums, her arms swinging left and right lightly in a girly manner.
“It really is! I wonder who had it..” Osana turns back to the fountain. “Wait, where’s the book?” She hurries to the fountain, “Oh, no!”
Ayano smiles to herself quietly as Osana quickly fishes the book out of the water, her face crippling in shock and shame. “Oh, no.. h-how did it..? Oh, Taro’s going to be so mad..” She mumbles, pulling a hand up to her cheek.
Raibaru frowns as well, clearly sharing her pain on the situation. “I’m sorry, Osana. I know this is bad, but.. Taro’s been your friend your whole lives! I’m sure he’ll know that this didn’t happen on purpose..”
“Yeah, but..” Osana sighs, sitting onto the fountain in defeat. “...that isn’t going to stop how disappointed he’ll be in me..” She mumbles, hanging her head slightly.
Humming in contentment, Ayano walks off. She couldn’t wait to see the utter disposition on Taro’s face. And it’ll all be aimed at Osana. She didn’t blame Osana for being so nervous. If Taro ever felt something like that towards herself, she was sure that she’d break right there.
Ayano giggles lightly, putting a hand to her cheek as she thought of the event. Unfortunately, she was interrupted by a familiar pinging from her phone. Her smile faded immediately as she pulled out her phone.
Info-Chan: Don’t forget about that yard work you’ll be doing ;D
Scoffing, Ayano once again ignores Info-Chan. It was lovely that she was able to sabotoge something for Osana, but it wasn’t as lovely that Ayano had such a time-consuming errand to run. Hopefully this didn’t stop her from watching Taro eat his lunch..
__
Kyuji frowned, peeking around the tree to Osana. She looked seriously distressed over that book she got. His original plan was to approach her when she wasn’t busy, but it looked like she would’ve been even if the book wasn’t ruined. It’d definitely be inappropriate if he tried to approach her now.
“Still stalking her?” A voice asks from behind Kyuji, making him gasp a bit in shock. “Oh, Amise. Jeez.. Are you sure you don’t do that on purpose?” He sighs, before quietly adding. “And it’s not.. Stalking. I’m just… waiting for the right chance to approach her.."
Amise smiles, “I may enjoy it a little bit.” She comments as she crosses her arms, leaning against the tree along with him. “So, what’d you get her this time?”
“Oh, uh..” Kyuji frowns a bit, digging out a sparkly cat phone charm. It looked similar to Osana’s, Amise realized, but only in the cat aspect. It took on a cuter, pinker look. “..since she lost her first one I thought she’d like another one. It’s.. not her original one, but I know that she likes pink, so I thought maybe she wouldn’t mind?”
Chuckling, Amise nods approvingly. “I think she’ll like it. But I guess now isn’t the best time to give it to her, huh?” She asks, tilting her head to the side.
Kyuji nods and exhales, “Yeah. I hope she’ll feel better after classes. I’d.. hate to disrupt her right now.” He says, nervously fiddling with the phone charm. “Thanks for helping me with this, by the way. I, uh.. I’m not sure if I’ll be able to compete with that childhood friend of hers.. But it feels nice to at least try. Maybe this Friday I can bring up the courage tp tell her how I feel.”
“I think you can.” Amise smiles, standing up straight and folding her hands behind her back. “It’s a really brave thing to confess something like that, so take pride in that fact, regardless of what may happen.” She says, giving him two thumbs up as encouragement.
Kyuji blushes lightly. “Yeah.. In the end I guess it’s worth a shot.” He agrees, nodding lightly before waving Amise bye as she walks off.
__
“Hey, Osana! What’d you think of the book?” Taro asks, a hand placed casually in his pocket. Ayano was standing behind a nearby tree, headphones on just in case either of them spotted her. She couldn’t see the disappointment, but she could certainly hear it.
“Taro, uh… I’m so sorry, but… the book..” Osana mumbled, struggling to come up with a legitimate excuse, despite the fact that she was likely dreading this moment all day.
Taro was silent for a minute before he sighed and took the book back. “Jeez, Osana.. How’d this happen?” He asks, crossing his arms.
Messing with her hair quietly, Osana slowly sits up. “I was sitting at the fountain while I was reading it, and then.. Raibaru found that phone charm I was missing, so I put it down to go get it, but.. I guess it slipped in while I wasn’t looking..” She muttered, looking anywhere but at Taro. “..God, I don’t even want the stupid charm anymore.”
“Right.” Taro looks at the book briefly, opening it up as if hoping that something in it was salvaged. Unfortunately, the pages sticking together was enough to tell him that it was far from being readable. He sighs again. “I understand, Osana. I know you wouldn’t do this on purpose.”
Ayano narrowed her eyes. It was remarkable how Taro could forgive someone so easily.. Unless that someone is Osana, who clearly didn’t deserve forgiveness.
“I think I’m going to walk home alone for today, though. I’d like to explain to Hanako what exactly happened.” Taro explains, putting the book away and pulling out his phone. “See you tomorrow, Osana.”
Osana nods, “Yeah..” And watches as Taro walks away. She huffs, looking frustrated with herself, before sighing. “Ohhhh… how embarrassing…”
Despite Taro’s reaction not quite reaching Ayano’s hopes, she still found pleasure in Osana’s dread surrounding the situation. She wondered if she could get Osana to give up on Taro simply by losing hope. Killing is fine and all, but it’d be far more enjoyable to see Osana eliminate herself and her own hopes.
Info-Chan: So, you finished Tsubaki’s task?
Ayano: Yes.
The task itself wasn’t too hard, and Ayano can likely thank Tsubaki underestimating the amount of work she did for that. The butterfly bush was pretty noticeable. It wasn’t necessarily vivid in color, but it seemed to grow in clusters of purple, so snipping up the few that were there proved easier than expected.
Info-Chan: Good thing, too.
Info-Chan sends a photo of what looked like Ayano’s student information but edited. From her picture, it seemed that she was liked and respected just a little bit more, which was a good thing.
Today wasn’t as hopeless as yesterday, thank goodness. But just how hopeful was it?
