Dinner Date
Word Count- 1002
Request?- Nope!
Summary- You'd run into the adventurer a few times now and... helped yourself to a few finds. You didn't expect him here or for the shoe to be on the other foot
Warnings- None
Your meal had barely even started when it was ruined. 
It was a nice place. A high end place. Places you usually have to make reservations for at least a couple weeks in advance. A place where you had to slip the hostess a very generous tip to get a table on short notice. You deserved it, you worked hard.
The view was spectacular, your glass was full of wine you hadn't even touched, and there was even live music playing softly from a far corner. This was the kind of place people from money dined in. You weren't from money, per say, but you could walk in those circles when you needed to.
You popped another appetizer, something bite sized you hadn't looked at the menu, and sat back in your chair. Treating yourself never tasted so nice. 
The waiter came by with your plate of food, steaming and glistening in the low light, and you were practically drooling. Plate had hardly touched the table when he showed up. The waiter has just turned to leave and, too taken with the food, you hadn't noticed the uninvited guest until the chair opposite moved.
You'd recognise the smug face anywhere. Even dressed up in a crinkled dress shirt and jacket, Illinois wasn't hard to miss.
"Really?" You deadpanned, spreading a napkin out across your lap.
"I can't drop in on an old friend?" He asks, leaning an elbow on the table and looking entirely too pleased with himself.
Not deigning to answer, you instead gesture up towards your head. The man takes a minute to catch your drift before his eyes dart up to that stupid cowboy hat. Even if it did have a certain charm, it didn't fit with his outfit nor did it fit with anything else in the building.
"What? I'm not taking it off for this place."
"You look ridiculous."
"I look amazing, excuse you." He readjusts in his seat, pointedly changing the subject. "Anyways, I wanted to catch up. See what you've been up to."
"None of your business and we're not friends."
Illinois almost looks put out as you say that. You shrug, finally taking a bite of your meal and nodding in approval.
"Can't help but notice this isn't your usual kinda haunt," he continues.
"What, I'm not allowed to have class?"
A short laugh that has a few older guests turn to look at the two of you. "You and I both know you're way more at home in some back alleys than fine dining."
You hummed around the next bite, idly twirling your fork. "So you're saying I'm a cheap date?"
"Something like that. Where'd we run into last?" Illinois looked almost annoyed as you shrugged. 
"I don't know... Outside some pawn shop in Rome?" 
"Try a side street in Rabat."
Feigning thinking about it for a moment, you nodded. "Yeah I guess we did bump into each other there too, huh?"
"Uh huh. Don't suppose I can ask for that statue back?"
"Oh you can. You're not gonna like the answer though." You pop another bite in your mouth. "I will say thanks for paying for the meal."
Illinois scrubs a hand down his face. "You sold it then? And the necklace? God don't tell me you pawned them, please."
"Psh, pawn shops are a rip off and you know it. Private collectors on the other hand... Well, there's a reason I'm going to them and not a museum."
"Do your clients care that you're peddling stolen artifacts?"
You were about to fire back when the waiter approached. Wine bottle in one hand, he haltingly asks if the gentleman would like to order. The fact that you had only gotten a table for one might be why you were both getting weird looks from the staff.
"Thanks but I'm fi-"
"He'll have what I'm having," you cut him off, tone far too pleasant. 
The waiter nodded and disappeared back to the kitchen. You couldn't help but take a bit too much enjoyment out of his glare.
"Oh cmon, you don't wanna enjoy what those artifacts got us?"
Illinois jabbed a finger your way. "There is no us cuz you stole them from me."
"I fail to see how my stealing is different from your stealing," you said, continuing before Illinois could, "You don't strike me as the kind of guy who goes through all the proper channels. Gets all the permits and paperwork in order before jumping right in. I had just as much right to those artifacts as you did."
You watched his jaw clench. "I offered to take you under my wing. It didn't have to be like this."
The conversation slammed to a halt again as the waiter brought a second plate of food. Delicious as it looked, Illinois didn't look away from you for a second. Didn't even say anything to the waiter.
"It's good, really," you said. You were close to polishing off your portion.
"You're gonna try and stick me with the bill aren't you?"
"And what, stiff the lovely staff here?"
"Oh I'm sure you'll tip generous.”
You shrugged, going to take a sip of your drink. "Not very gentlemanly of you, Illinois."
"Not very-"
The dessert had come then which, to be honest, you forgot you ordered. A tall, generous slice of chocolate cake with mouse and a mirror glaze and everything. It was perfect.
And then Illinois cleaved it in half with his fork. You could only watch in horror as he shoved at least a good third of that cake into his mouth. 
"Good choice," he said, still chewing.
"God you're disgusting," you push your chair back and stand, storming off towards the bathroom. 
"Disgustingly handsome?" He calls after you. You pointedly ignore him and the stares. 
He better enjoy that cake, you thought. Cuz there was a window in that bathroom just begging to be used as an escape route. You worked hard, you deserved an Illinois free night out anyways.

Egotober 2022 Day 15: In the Flower Bed
Summary: Noir gets used to being in the Manor.

Illinois had brought Noir to the Manor, Eric was with him. He was trying to make a point of slowly acclimatizing Noir to the strange magic of the Manor.
Even though he’d been raised in the Manor for most of his life, the House made him feel weird. Never while he was inside it, but always when he looked back at his time inside of it. Time felt different, like he’d spent too long and only seconds inside. He felt like he became a different person, and he didn’t want that for Noir even if it was unavoidable.
So today he and Eric were staying outside of the Manor, on the grounds. Illinois had always liked the grounds and how they folded into the tree line of the woods.
The grounds were always pristine. Never a weed in sight. As if there was some unseen groundskeeper tending to the place. If there was, Illinois had never met them.
Flowers usually changed but occasionally some pink five petal flowers showed up on the ground and they were the closest things to weeds the garden had.
Noir was playing around in the garden. He had picked a couple of flowers, some of the pink ones and some random ones and given them to Eric and Illinois. Eric had one of the pink ones tucked behind his ear. The child had some toys and a truck and was playing at the edge of the flower bed.
When they had arrived, Dark had immediately given Noir a box of wooden trains and cars with patterns painted on the sides. Dark also slipped Illinois and Eric an envelope each, giving them each a gift of their own.
Dark then retreated a bit away from Noir, especially after seeing the grey color start to overtake the colors around them.
Noir was playing with his toys as Illinois was talking with Dark.
The young boy had some plastic dump trucks that he’d filled with dirt and flowers. Noir still wasn’t too much of a talker but Illinois hoped that would change as he got more comfortable with them.
Noir held out one of the flowers out for Dark, and Dark took it, looking at the flower in his hand. The flower stubbornly held its pink coloration.
Dark took the flower. “Thank you.”
Noir looked up at him, the shadow of a little smile on his face. A smile that would in time grow to resemble Illinois’s more and more as the years would eventually go on.
Illinois had wandered into the house to grab some iced tea and muffins. He looked at Noir but didn’t move to stop him as he set down the picture and a tray of muffins. He opened up a portal to grab some glasses from inside the Manor.
He gave Noir a minute or two to know he was there before calling out to him. “Hey, Noir, buddy, snack time. Let’s go and wash your hands.”
Noir just looked at him as Illinois stared back at him.
“Dirt in your muffins and tea don’t taste good, I’ve tried it,” Illinois said, casually just pouring a small kid glass of iced tea for Noir.
Noir was coaxed briefly into the house so he could wash his hands and then he stepped back outside and sat down for some muffins and snacks.
Illinois looked over at the  ripped up dirt and flowers. “Sorry about that.”
“It’s fine,” Dark said. “The flower beds will recover.”
“Well look who’s here,” Wilford smiled as he walked out of the House.
Noir was too busy stuffing a large piece of muffin into his mouth to say hello, but Dark thought his expression looked more like a smile than the one he’s given Dark. But the demon didn’t say anything about it.
“What an adorable little rascal,” Wilford smiled at him. “Hey there, junior.”
“He’s been playing in the flower bed,” Illinois warned.
“Ehh, it’s all fine,” Wilford dismissed. “George will take care of it, it’s what he’s paid for.”
Dark gave Wilford a startled look, taking a step back.
“Who?” Illinois asked.
“George,” Wilford said, smiling. “You know.”
Illinois gave him a look.
“You remember good ol’ George,” Wilford said as he plucked a muffin off the tray. “The chap who keeps the grounds, I see him every once in a while. Nice chap, good man. Great conversationalist but a bit of a skewed memory. He says I was in the war, but I don’t see why I would have done that.”
Wilford turned back to Noir, bracing his hands on his knees, “Having fun with the flowers my boy?”
Noir nodded.
“Wonderful to hear,” Wilford smiled and reached into the Void to pull out a light grey fedora with a rainbow colored belt around it. “There, we go. Just like your old man.”
Noir let him place that hat on his head and Wilford looked between Noir and Illinois. “Isn’t he lovely?”
“He is,” Illinois said.
Wilford turned back to smile at Noir again, “You’re going to grow up to be as handsome as your daddies aren’t you?”
Noir managed the tiniest of half smiles as Illinois and Eric both grabbed muffins. Dark ate one even if he couldn’t enjoy it. The moment of them together was peaceful and pleasant.
Wilford’s little moment notwithstanding.

Summary- If you asked him Illinois never had trouble putting the charms on people. Shame that that seems to be part of his problem in this particular case...
Warnings- None
Illinois knew you were capable. You had to be to stay in one piece for this long. Maybe you weren't as good of an adventurer as him but still. Capable.
Apparently you were also oblivious.
It may or may not have been his own fault that he flirted so much you never took him seriously when he meant it. Maybe. At this point though you had no excuse.
"Dunno what sparkles more," he said, throwing an arm around your shoulder, "the gem or those eyes of yours…"
And you just scoffed! Ducked out from under his arm and took the treasure, scoffed! You didn't even deign him with a response.
This had been going on for weeks and Illinois was about ready to tear his hair out.
If the regular flirting didn't do the trick, maybe gifts would? He didn't joke around with gifts. As much.
It took a good long while of scouting around for the perfect treasure. No rusty doubloons for you.
You had come into the hotel room with a bag of food from a place he didn't know, eyebrow raised.
"What's all this…?"
On the floor he had laid out a map. It was folded and creased and stained and took up a huge chunk of the room. He had written in the margins and put sticky notes on interesting areas.
Illinois grinned, getting to his feet and dusting his hands off. "You get to pick the next adventure."
"What?" He couldn't tell if the disbelieving laugh was good or bad.
"C'mon, now," Illinois ushered you closer, careful not to step on the map, "you're always asking why I drag you to death traps and all. So this time- you pick!"
You turned to him with a bemused little smile. "So I pick another death trap to go to?"
Illinois paused. "Well, death trap isn't what I'd call it-"
"I don't even know what we'd be looking for?"
"That's what the notes are for," he guided you around to the other side, clapped his hands on your shoulders, leaned in real close and said, "you're the captain of this ship."
You shot him an odd look but obliged, stooping down so you could read the map. Illinois counted it as a success. It seemed like you didn't take it as a joke anyway.
The high lasted all of one night, where it was business as usual.
Refusing to let it get him down, he resolved to turn up the heat on the trip you picked.
Though he had to admit, it wasn't… quite what he expected. The actual adventure part turned out to be a bust. Whatever artifact was rumored to be there was embellished heavily to help with tourism. Even the site it was supposed to be at gave tours and had convenient handrails installed. There was even a damn gift shop.
"There's nothing wrong with gift shops, y'know," you said on the drive back.
"They're overpriced for one," Illinois grumbled. He had a whole plan in mind. Make it a trip to remember, maybe take you out to dinner after.
"It keeps the lights on in those places."
"It's a rip off is what it is."
He was never going to set foot in another place with a gift shop if he could help it. Especially not after this.
You didn't seem too bothered. Smile on your face, arm resting half outside the window as he drove. The wind was enough to ruffle your hair around. Illinois had to remind himself to keep his eyes on the road.
"C'mon, you never went on a field trip anywhere and rampaged through the gift shop at the end?" The gleam in your eyes had him huffing and fidgeting in his seat.
"No. And what kinda kid do you think I was?"
"One who couldn't be kept out of anything that wasn't padlocked."
Illinois scoffed. "Wrong. Totally wrong. I was a model child, total angel."
You rolled your eyes and Illinois let the silence hang just a bit.
"And padlocks really aren't that hard to pick."
"Oh my god, Illinois!"
He snickered as the two of you reached the start of civilization again. A ways down the road, he spotted the glowing neon sign of a restaurant. Hadn't you mentioned you liked that kind of food?
It took him all of a second to think it over before he was making the turn. You looked away from the window as he did, clearly confused. Throwing the car in park, Illinois turned to you.
"Look, the adventure is a wash but-" he reached over and poked you in the cheek, ignoring how you swatted his hand, "I refuse to let your trip go to waste. So how bout I take ya out to dinner, darlin. My treat."
You were already going to answer, more out of habit than anything, and then you paused. To his amazement, there was a faint blush there on your cheeks! What did he do different?
"Ah… darling?" You repeated, voice pitched just a touch higher.
Oh, this he could work with.
"Yes?" He answered, knowing that wasn't what you meant. You sputtered and he resisted the urge to laugh. "It's a pretty easy question, I just wanna get ya your favorite is all. I can be a gentleman when I wanna be."
Your mouth opened, closed, and with a rough swallow you finally nodded, getting out of the car. Illinois couldn't help the shit-eating grin. He was gonna have so much fun with this.

Egotober 2022 Day 30: Pumpkin Carving
Summary: Noir’s first Halloween with his new family, and uses his first burst of magic.
Prompt: Pumpkin

It was a little late in the season for pumpkins, but they lived on an island and had exactly zero neighbors. So the only people they decorated were them.
Illinois had made some five bean chili for Eric, Noir, and himself. Noir seemed to like it and that’s what mattered. Noir wasn’t feeling up to going to the Harvest festival but he was feeling up to going out for Halloween. Which both Illinois and Eric were excited about. They’d been careful not to let Noir’s adoption slip to any of the villains or heroes, mostly to keep anyone from involving the kid yet and give Noir time to adjust to living with them.
Tonight they were making Jack-O-Lanterns. It was a tradition that Illinois had grown up with in the Manor. The week after Halloween they would always destroy the pumpkins unless one of them really wanted to watch it rot. Which was usually Author. But this was Noir’s first year so they probably wouldn’t break out the sledgehammer yet.
Illinois was sitting on the front porch, at the little table off to the side, with two pumpkins and an entire kit of pumpkin carving knives and utensils. The sharper ones put away and safely away from Noir, and Eric.
“Alright, buddy, what kind of face do you want?” Illinois smiled, squatting down a bit so that he was one Noir’s level.
“I don’t want a face,” Noir frowned.
“That’s all good, what do you want, kiddo?” Illinois said. “We can put anything on the pumpkin.”
Noir was quiet for a little bit before holding up his teddy bear.
“A bear? We can do that. You want Columbo or a grizzly bear?” Illinois asked.
“Columbo,” Noir said, a little bit of a smile on his face, clearly excited.
“Sounds good to me,” Illinois smiled. How about Eric takes care of him while we’re working?”
Noir held his teddy bear a little tighter but he nodded.
“Eric, dulcito, sweetheart, can we have some help out here?” Illinois got up to call into the open doorway.
Eric took a bit to get up from the kitchen table when he was on his tablet watching news feeds and then slowly walked over. Noir gave him a huge smile when he saw him.
“Hmm?” Eric asked as he smiled back at Noir before looking at Illinois.
“Can you keep Columbo company for a little while?” Illinois asked.
Eric smiled and nodded as he pulled up a well cushioned chair over and sat next to Noir. It took Noir a little bit before he passed over his teddy bear. Eric carefully held it in his lap as he watched them.
“H-How lovely,” Eric smiled as he looked at the pumpkins Illinois was drawing on. Noir was sitting close with him.
Illinois had pulled up his phone to look at ideas and Eric tilted the bear so that it was in view when Illinois needed a look at it.
“I think Columbo was a good choice for a pattern,” Illinois said as Noir watched him working.
“Really?” Noir asked.
“Oh yeah, he’s gonna look great.” Illinois smiled as he pulled the top off of Noir’s pumpkin and dragged the bowl closer so that they could scoop the seeds out.
“Wanna reach in here and help, buddy?” Illinois smiled, being careful to move anything that Noir could cut himself on as far away as possible.
“Yeah,” Noir said and reached a hand out to plunge into the pumpkin to start ripping seeds and pulp out. But as he did, time suddenly began to freeze.
In time Noir would say it was the same as when Eric would slow down videos to see what heroes or villains were doing. Things had slowed down to a crawl. Even Noir did.
But his thoughts were a different story. They began to race. At first confusion at what was going on as his brain took in so much information. Too much information.
Confusion turned to fear as Noir stopped trying to reach for the pumpkin and was instead mentally screaming for Illinois and reaching for him.
And then he was free, and Noir began screaming and crying. Illinois immediately let go of the pumpkin and raced around the table to Noir. More of the boy’s grey magic was taking over things. Illinois checked Noir over for any cuts, fearful that he’d left some knife. The pumpkins were forgotten and Illinois and Eric took Noir inside as Noir clung onto Illinois.
Illinois could feel magic coursing through Noir’s body.
It would be some time before Noir calmed down. Illinois wrapped him up in his favorite blanket as they watched some movies. Pumpkins would be taken care of in the morning. And Illinois would take to Host after Noir had gone to bed. He had some questions about how quickly Noir’s mood had shifted and Illinois was concerned that something had happened.
But for now the little family was cuddled together, watching things and comforting Noir until he smiled again.
Tomorrow would be a better day.
