So I've NOT watched the Mario movie, but I've watched some of the other illumination movies, and I agree with you. Illumination is, IMO! very hit or miss, I really hate how childish they sometimes are, and I find them to not really be movies I ever want to re-watch. LoZ needs a company that knows how to do a good pacing, and respects more of the fact that LoZ is fun, but isn't as family friendly as you might first assume. Idk companies, but I'd really prefer a studio that isn't so "over the top"
I know that people always say things like 'if there's ever a Zelda movie, Studio Ghibli is the only company that can match that exact combination of sublime adventure in a foreign world and the subtleties of the human experience'.
However, in a more realistic scenario, I'd just opt for either Sony Pictures Animation* or Warner Bros Animation just for the sake of something resembling balance.
*Yes, I know that Sony gave us Hotels and Emojis, but they've been showing that they are desperately trying to step out of those films' shadows. Whereas Illumination is firmly planted in 'either Minions or Minion-adjacent humor'

Great question! Everything I make that's my own and not a reblog is under "my posts", every bit of art I do is under "my art", any game development I do is under "gamedev", you can find all my MLP art under "mlp, my art" or "horsecomix" for the best stuff. I also have an "animations" tag and a "shitposts" tab. I also properly tag all my asks to be asks and write out the asker's name, so if you don't wanna see those just mute the ask tag.

I use FireAlpaca and Paint.net for misc. effects!

I use FireAlpaca do make my assets! Astral Guard, Happup, and any other top-down RPG games I make are all made in RPGMaker 2003. Susan Taxpayer is made in SMBX2 Beta 4, a Mario fangame engine with lua support!

I love it! I think it's cute. I really don't agree that there was some sort of huge quality drop after season 2 or whatever.
What do you think of G5?
Not my style! I don't really like either animation types and it just seems like I'm not in the audience anymore. That's totally chill, but it just doesn't grab me!
Have you watched any other MLP stuff from previous generations?
Nope! But I did see a compilation called Minty Being Autistic for Six Minutes Straight that I loved. she's perfect.
Favorite pony?
Don't got one, I love all the Mane Six a LOT, but I'm particularly fond of Fluttershy, Applejack, and Rarity!
Favorite episode/season?
I'm so bad at picking favorites! But any season past Season 1 I have a blast with because I feel like it's just more my style. I don't have a favorite episode, but the most recent one I can remember LOVING is the one where Starlight bottles up her emotions because it was REALLY funny.

Have you watched the Mentally Advanced Series/Friendship is Witchcraft/Other fandom vids?
Probably not! My interaction with the MLP fandom prior to last year was pretty minimal, so I'm making my way through the show first!

I think it's super weird but really fun because of that. I've never properly read any of it but it's very fascinating to me.

Yep! I go by she/her, I'm a trans woman. Have been for many years, but I only recently came out online!

Yeah! I only have my commissions available on my Ko-Fi at certain times though, so keep an eye out! I usually announce slots being open at least 12 hours beforehand. Slots are usually first come first serve, but we'll see.

Yeah man i'm not scouring every discord on the planet to find stickers of my work. i think it owns if people take my stuff and make it stupid injoke emotes between friends that makes me very happy.

I feel like this is beyond my capabilities of advice! I'm actually very comfortable with my body and I have been for many years, so I don't know if I can give any good or helpful advice on that front. Apologies, but there are many resources out there where you can ask about those things if you look for them, like Discord channels!

Not really for the personality, because my Spamton's personality is actually a bit similar.. but more for the visual aspect. I headcannon that canon Spamton's body shrunk when he fell into an acid pool. My Spamton fell into an acid pool as well, but it didn't shrink him. It destroyed the structure of his body and elongated him. Making him much taller and extremely deformed..
Imagine the two of them standing side by side. Original Spam would be up to my Spams knee! <XD

As for what kind of monsters they'd face,, I'm actually unsure- I haven't played either game and I don't know any of the lore or characters.. so I'm not sure what kinds of dangers the real cookie run pirates face.. :( But what I DO know is that Blue Beauty is their main form of protection.
She's not exactly threatening to a lot of creatures I'd imagine.. She is just a Mer-whale. No teeth or stingers to make her more intimidating.. But what she is, is huge. And incredibly strong. She's a real power house and uses tools and weapons the crew taught her how to use to defend herself. And I imagine with her thick blubber, it takes a really deep wound to actually hurt her. So she doesn't fear getting a couple scratches here and there.
When it comes to the other cookies, most everyone stands up and fights. Only a select few retreat to the lower decks to protect their goods or hide. Those likely being Ellie, she's too old for this crap- and Coco and Red, though don't be fooled! Coco can fight! She's just retreating with Red in order to protect him. Everyone else though is up there duking it out with who ever dares cross their ship! ⚔⚔

As much as I mourn all the lines that appeared in mario movie trailers but for some reason, didn't make it to the finished product (RIP "I'm not afraid! I'd do anything for my brother!" YOU LIVE ON IN MY HEART ALWAYS AND FOREVER), I've been thinking about "I hope you told your brother how much you love him, because you're probably never gonna see him again" and the rest of that whole dialogue exchange in particular from this specific trailer and how much I wish we'd gotten that moment because I think it would have helped spotlight a vital aspect of Mario's character that the movie already does a REALLY good job with getting across in the first place: the way he communicates how he feels through action and acts of service instead of words!
(more under the cut because this got too long, haha)
Mario is usually a very quiet protagonist so this tracks with the games too, obviously, but even movie!Mario seems like someone who isn't overly verbose or who's especially eager to enter into heavy, feelings-based conversations (at least not without a struggle). Talking about his feelings might not come easy to him, and he maybe even forgets to say things outloud that to him, seem obvious. (Meanwhile, I think Luigi is always up for gushing about his favorite people (see the interrogation scene lol) and probably ends every phone call/text message exchange ever with "love you!" to Mario and his parents, to the point that he might accidentally say it to acquaintances and customers too on occasion, LOL).
So thinking about this exchange with Toad and how, even if the movie didn't acknowledge it past that point, this idea would be hanging over Mario throughout his journey hits harder because you can imagine him thinking: hey, when WAS the last time he told Luigi outright that he loved him that wasn't a distracted "yeah, me too" response to Luigi saying it first? Maybe it's been a long time. Too long. So long it's genuinely upsetting for him to realize! What if his brother doesn't actually know how much Mario loves him, because he does, he does so much, and he's been an idiot for going so long without saying the actual words and now he can't, he CAN'T and he would give anything in the world to go back and do things differently!
And of course, all this panic is totally unwarranted and even silly because I think Luigi knows like his own name how much Mario loves him. Because the audience watching this movie knows how much Mario loves his brother by that point! Mario never says the actual words - in fact, he never says anything particularly positive about Luigi, other than "you were great!" regarding the commercial in the very beginning - and yet it couldn't be any clearer!!! I think it's pretty impossible to come out of this movie (if you were paying attention in the least) not seeing that love plain as day in everything Mario does, down to the littlest things, because he is a man of action and that's how he expresses himself best!
You see it in how he shifts from mildly embarrassed to immediately Intense and Ready To Throw Down on a dime when Spike insults Luigi, you see it in how he pauses to open doors and create paths for Luigi to safely follow him through the construction site as he's parkouring, you see it when the dog becomes aggressive and Mario is just entirely focused on keeping Luigi behind him, pushing him out of harm's way, getting the dog's attention so it will attack him instead, etc. You see it in the warp pipe when his entire demeanor changes the second he realizes Luigi is in trouble, how he desperately paddles to reach him and grab his hand and comfort him about the situation. You see it in how his brother is front of mind for him at every point in his adventure and that's why he fights so hard to talk to Peach, why he agrees to the fight with DK, why he keeps trying even when things seem hopeless and no one believes he can do it. You see it written all over Mario's face during the reunion, every single little way he touches Luigi and brings him closer and checks in on him with crystal-clear relief and joy and gentleness!!! The "show, don't tell" aspect is just OFF THE CHARTS IN THE BEST WAY POSSIBLE because that's how Mario is. He's not so good at words and remembering to say them. When he loves someone, he wears that feeling, he lives that feeling in so much of what he chooses to do and how he interacts with the world, and while it's always good to say these things outloud now and then just to be clear everyone's on the same page (and I'm sure he does after the movie, haha), it doesn't make it any less meaningful. :)

IDK, man, Wattpad's being weird so I can't publish this to AO3 yet, But here you go! Also inspiration comes from: @fermentedgutz @xpeachesxmushroomsx and @james-kay64 ! Thank you for the inspiration!
(Text on screen says "with my previous script writing knowledge (and the fact I run a YouTube channel), I present to you a Bowuigi thing,because of course.")
(Screen fades to black. Screen stays on black as Bowser screams into the void"Peaches!!!!!". We abruptly cut to Luigi sitting in his cage above the lava pit, staring dreamily into the distance.)
Luigi:(sighs) I wish that was me...
Penguin king: what did you say?
Luigi:(Jumping) Nothing! Nothing...
(An uncomfortable silence fills the room)
Penguin king: He's been singing that song for over 3 days. (Kamak screaming)
Luigi: Does the end usually have a scream?
Penguin king: unfortunately, yes.
Luma: they are the screams of lost and tortured souls!
Penguin king: we don't know that yet! (Pause) But that's a very likely possibility.
Luigi: oh, great... (a door slams somewhere) (He leans back and sighs, and then closes his eyes)
(Open scene on Bowser opening his eyes. He's sitting on his thrown talking to Kamak, who's hands are covered in bandages)
Bowser: should I give her flowers?
Kamak: it's really up to you, sire.
Bowser: yeah, but, she likes flowers, right? So if I give her flowers, she'll like me, right? (Pause) Back me up on this!
Kamak: oh yes, she'll most certainly adore you!
Bowser: (looking away) you're just saying that.
Kamak: no! She will adore you! She will fall instantly in love with you!
Bowser:(looking back) you really mean that? Like, genuinely?
Kamak: yes! Yes, of course! Yes!
Bowser: No, you're just a yes man.
Kamak: well, what do you expect me to say? That I am probably not the best person to ask for advice on this topic? No way!
Bowser: hey, that's not a half bad idea!
Kamak: the getting someone else to give you advice?
Bowser: yes! Now, who can I get...
Kamak:(kind of offended) well, someone who is smarter than me, knows more about humans than me, and has done more research into the topic than I have! But of course, who would know more about humans than me?
Bowser:(grabbing Kamak's shoulders) Kamak, that's it! (Shaking him) Who knows more about human women than an actual human?! (Letting go) I have to get him, I'll be right back!
Kamak:(to himself) did I just get replaced?
(cut to Luigi daydreaming in his cage)
Luigi:(sighs) what if I changed my name to Peaches? Would he like me then?Or could I just pretend my name's Peaches?
Penguin king: that is going to end in your very quick and painf-- (He slows down because he sees something)
(With the camera back on Luigi, we see Bowser in the background behind him.Bowser is trying to get his attention, but it's not working)
Luigi: I know, but a guy can dream! He wrote a whole love song for his crush!
(Cut to Bowser trying to get Luigi's attention from the ledge. In the background, the penguins are trying to warn Luigi about Bowser in the foreground. Luigi is paying attention to neither of them)
Bowser: what does a guy gotta do to get a guy's attention around here?
(Camera swings to show a control panel labeled cage controls. Bowser does one of those Chuck Jones looks to the camera)
(Cut back to Luigi, who is still gushing)
Luigi: if he wrote a love song for me, I wouldn't care who he was, his voice is that dreamy! (Suddenly his cage drops and he screams. He's only about a foot above the lava. He screams again when he notices it)
Bowser: do I have your attention now, loser? (Luigi quickly nods) Good, cause you're coming with me!
Luigi: oh no...
Luma:(screaming from off screen) hope you enjoy being dead! (Luigi slams his head against the bars)
(Cut to slightly later in Bowser's office (I think?), Bowser is in a tux,and we only see him because, well, you know.)
Bowser: Peach, I'm not a very talkative guy, so, I have prepared a speech.Love can really make a guy come out his shell. And, I really and truly love you. I have loved you since, well, I don't know when. As long as I can remember, really. I... You... My heart has broken so many times because of you, and I don't want to make that mistake again. You keep running out on me, and it hurts, really and truly hurts. So, let's not make that mistake again, and make it so we only have to do this one more time. Peach, will you marry me?
(Cut to Luigi in Peach's dress and a blonde wig. He has tiny little hearts in his eyes. He shakes his head quickly.) Luigi: uh, yes.
Bowser: Do you really mean that? Like, do you think she will like it? Was the pun too much?!
Luigi: No, it wasn't too much! I think she'll love it! It was... cute.
Bowser: You're really sure? You aren't Pulling my leg here, right?
Luigi: nope, no leg pulling!
Bowser:(stares at him for a minute before) YES! I am going to nail this proposal!
Luigi: Yay?
Bowser: Alright, off with you now.
Luigi: wait, what? (hard cut to him back in the cage with him slamming his head into the bars again. He still has the dress on.)
Penguin King: So, it went well, I take?
(The Luma blows a raspberry and pouts.)
Penguin King: Ignore them. So?
Luigi: Well, I got my wish.
Random penguin: Your name is now Peaches?
Luigi: No! He pretended he was in love with me, if only to practice a proposal for another.
Penguin King: Well, that explains the dress.
Luigi: Yeah, but it was all just pretend. He threw me out right after that.I just wish he'd wake up and see that I like him!
(Cut to Bowser at the piano. He starts playing a few notes but seems to be struggling with some creative block. He groans.)
Bowser: when did music get hard?! Just play some notes and you get a stupid love song! (He tries again, but it's not working. He looks like he's getting angrier by the second.) You know what? We'll just sing Peaches again!
(He takes in a breath to sing before the door creaks open. He turns with anger in his eyes.) Bowser: What do you want?!?!
(We cut to the koopa at the door. They shiver.) Koopa: Well, we're getting closer to The Mushroom Kingdom and...

Koopa:(sighs while stepping inside) The Princess has recruited the Kongs to help help ward... (Bowser looks even angrier) us... off...? (They give a weak smile.)
Bowser:What?
Koopa:The Princess has--!
Bowser: I HEARD YOU THE FIRST TIME!! (The koopa winces) Send out the troops.Make sure they don't make it there.
(They stand in attention and salute.) Koopa: Sir, yes Sir! (they run out of the room.)
Bowser:(sighs) I guess I'm not going to write that song today.
(Cut to Luigi. He's just laying in his cage. He's quietly singing "You Belong With Me" by Taylor Swift.)
Penguin King: So, I heard we're almost there.
Luma: Death, doom, destruction, so close! (laughs a bit)
Penguin King: Shut up for the love of god!
Luigi: Oh, let the kid have their fun. Lord knows it won't last long.
(The Penguin King looks over at him with concern.) Penguin King: You okay?
Luigi: The guy I have a crush on just used me to help him propose to someone else! Short answer, no.
Bowser:(from off-screen) Hey green guy, you gonna shut up long enough for us to jam?
(Luigi's eyes widen. He rolls over so he's on his stomach.) Luigi: You're talking to me? You're asking me to jam with you?
Bowser: Less of an ask, more of a demand, but yes. I need ideas for songs to play at my wedding.
Luigi:(turns to the penguins. They give him nervous smiles and thumbs up.)Yes, of course I'll do that!
(cut to slightly later, Bowser and Luigi sit on the bench in front of the piano.)
Luigi: so... what was the mood you had in mind?
Bowser: Shows how much I've wanted her and for how long.
Luigi: Alright, what about the vibe? Should it be groovy or sad or happy?
Bowser: name a song and I'll tell you yes or no.
Luigi: uh... what about Uptown Girl?
Bowser: no.
Luigi: Okay, what about You You You?
Bowser: Already on the list.
Luigi: I'm Yours?
Bowser: No.
Luigi: Call Me Maybe?
Bowser: Hell no!
Luigi: Hey There Delilah?
Bowser: No. Listen, if you don't have any good ideas then I would suggest you--
Luigi: You Belong With Me?
(Bowser pauses.) Bowser: I've never heard about that song before. What is it like?
Luigi:It's a song about rejection, and friendship, and it's sad, but it's still upbeat.
(He considers this.) Bowser: Play some for me.
Luigi:Oh, but I don't know piano--!
Bowser: I'll pick up on it. Just sing.
Luigi:oh! Okay... (softly singing) You're on the phone with your girlfriend, she's upset. She's going off about something that you said, 'Cause she doesn't get your humor like I do.
Bowser: Louder, I need to be able to hear you.
Luigi:(sighs but continues singing louder.) I'm in the room, it's a typical Tuesday night. I'm listening to the kind of music she doesn't like,and she'll never know your story like I do. (getting more emotional and louder) But she wears short skirts, I wear T-shirts, she's Cheer Captain, and I'm on the bleachers, dreaming about the day when you wake up and find that what you're looking for has been here the whole time!
Bowser: (playing a lot softer than before)
Luigi:If you could see that I'm the one who understands you! Been here all along, so why can't you see? You belong with me, you belong with me.
(Bowser isn't even playing anymore, he's just staring.)
Luigi:Walk in the streets with you in your worn-out jeans, I can't help thinking this is how it ought to be! Laughing on a park bench thinking to myself, "Hey, isn't this easy?" And you've got a smile that can light up this whole town, I haven't seen it in a while since she brought you down. You say you're fine, I know you better than that. Hey, what you doing with a girl like that? She wears high heels, I wear sneakers, she's Cheer Captain, and I'm on the bleachers, dreaming about the day when you wake up and find that what you're looking for has been here the whole time! (He gets very aggressive) If you could see that I'm the one who understands you!Been here all along, so why can't you see? You belong with me!Standing by and waiting at your backdoor, all this time how could you not know, baby? You belong with me! You belong with me.
(He wraps up the song with a sigh. He looks over to Bowser, who is sitting mouth agape in pure "wow.")
Luigi: Did I do something wrong? Did you not like it?
Bowser:(shakes his head) Yeah, I'm fine. I think I'm going to, uh, add that to the list.
(They stare at each other for a hot minute before another koopa guard bursts in.)
Koopa guard: Sire, we're here!
Bowser:(broken out of his daze) Uh, yeah, of course. Well, I'll see you later after my proposal, green... thing. (He gets up and walks over to the guard.) Escort him to his cage, please. And, give him a pillow or something.

thinking about 3 and him making friends
I don't know how everyone handles him but 4 is definitely not the only one who cares about him
also I wish they showed it more but Meggy definitely considers 3 a friend

we don't see him with Melony which is a shame, they should touch on that more ugh
but yea like Idk the idea that 3 is isolated in 4's grasp to justify the idea that 4 could be abusive-
Sure, he revolves around 4 but it's not really fully his fault, they're cosmically assigned as a pair so like, the fuck can he do but make the most of it?
Like I'll say, he's definitely not fully integrated in the friendgroup and he still has a lot to work on in that regard but he's far from having only 4 as his friend
I think it's just rather that HE thinks that but like he doesn't even know if he should cuz his stupid ass is constantly scared, got them trust issues
You know who has that problem though but doesn't appear a lot so we don't think about it too much? Kaizo. Bro only really knew Saiko and like, that's all we really know of him besides like being irresponsible as hell
but we didn't really like, see him bounce off with anybody else
3-Meggy bouncing off works, similarly to how honestly 4-Meggy works, it's the competitive shittalking kicking in with both, although we saw less of it, since the 34 dynamic really took over
I bet Kaizo could have a great dynamic with someone other than Saiko but he doesn't get enough screen time for that
anyways I'm still fucked over the whole 34 thing. There's so much of them. I don't know, if their whole gay little thing is gonna forever stay a bit and nothing more, it's- gonna get boring real quick
like you can try and dangle the treat in front of us, the animals, but at some point after waiting for it long enough, we'll grow bored.
But really, it feels like such an odd writing decision to focus on them so much if they're just meant to be a bit and they don't want to progress their relationship further. Like it's not like that's what people prefer. Sure, there's a minority who would want only that forever but then it's just pleasing a tiny crowd which could drive others away. It just feels like it wouldn't worth going through so much trouble with them all for that
Like if they just wanted to keep it a silly bit, they shouldn't. focus on it so much. Like, logically if they put so much emphasis on them and tease the hell out of us with things like the end of wotfi23, forced hold hands, elevator, the god damn titanic scene, squidbob34, Perfect, them bitches always being next to each other, like you'll find them mostly next to each other in most scenes they're present in
like, logically, LOGICALLY, this shit's supposed to become more than a god damn bit. Why would you put so much in a ship, the actual like, majority of your fanbase doesn't really care as much about (see: that one youtube ship popularity poll on another yt channel) and some (although a minority) even despise and call the idea of making it canon the end of the world
I am just, you know, left wondering, what the hell is it for- if not for them to make it fuckin canon at some point?
Honestly, I think I said it before, maybe not publically but I'd find it really fun if wotfi24 somehow drove them to be canon

like it makes you think about like, what would even be grand enough to match them, the anticipation that is if those 2 could ever get together, what could match that?
Or would it become like the Puzzlevision movie where it's like, it's fine but still kind of weak. Like sure, but, eh, I expected it to be more cool and like making the wait worthy
then again it would be really funny if they didn't make them canon on camera, we'd just see kiss them in the background while other characters get focus. Like Idk, maybe some random characters we don't see enough, getting together in 3's cafe and like. In the background we see 4 walk over to the counter and very clearly kiss 3 and then them talking. But like they aren't the focus so imagine people actually missing it LJLKLFFL
imagine being a shipper, missing the scene and then losing your shit when people post screenshots of them kissing and you have to go back and check and lose your shit even more

Hi! I saw your reblog on how you wanted to write paragraphs about this movie version of Bowser. I was wondering if you actually like to do it?
OMG ABSOLUTELY! Who's ready for an unhinged look into my perspective of Bowser!? And I mean unhinged. Getting my mind clearly written out can be a heck of a thing. So hang on kids.
For anyone curious, this is the post in question that's prompting this rant.
So, let's get the first thing out of the way: Game!Bowser and Movie!Bowser are different identities. (I already hearing you say 'well no duh Sydney!' Be patient, I'm getting there.)
For Game!Bowser, I can understand where people in the audience/players get the idea of why he might be given a pass to be some what of a 'good person'. Sure, he's captured Princess Peach countless times and put her kingdom in danger. Sure, he's taken some powerful tools and weapons for his own benefit to try and rule the world/galaxy/whatever. Sure, he's narcissistic and mean to his own minions.
But something that the games have provided are two rather big things that help:
One, a pretty obvious idea is the fact that Bowser CAN be a hero. If anything, doing so when he's pushed to that moment where he has to help or there's no way for a happy ending.
If more than anything, he joins because he hates the idea of losing whatever to another baddie. But Bowser still become a hero when the moment arises. Doing what he can to help the situation.

Those are the games that I can think of off the top of my head that has Bowser joining the heroes side to help defend and protect. (PS: I'm not including the spinoff games for this discussion, sorry.) You can easily make the argument that he's only doing so because he doesn't want to lose. Which I will agree with you 100%. But doesn't change the fact that he's still willing to do so.
Two, and this is more for the story telling portion and what I think a lot of people flock to, is the fact that Bowser is pretty 'openly written' as a character.
Now, what the heck to I mean by that?
When it comes to video games, story telling is not quite equal to the time given to make the game playable. I've heard/watched a few interviews with game developers that state getting a balance between understanding the character and playing the game is a hard thing to maintain. As a story teller, you have so much you want to offer and not that much time to do so.
You're not reading a book, you're playing a game! You have to interpret a lot from what you're seeing and what's happening in that moment to sort of figure out what that character is thinking. More often that not, we're not going to have moments when characters can sit down and have both an external conversation with someone and an internal monologue going into further details as to what the characters are thinking.

Those are games where, in my opinion, it comes closest to really giving the player as much insight as possible to really understand the characters. But even then, most of the time, we're only giving these characters personalities because of the actions we give them or with what's been scripted out. We can kind of extrapolate meaning, relating their actions to the spotted information provided about their past or their beliefs. But that's really it sometimes.
Games can't give the time to allow characters to be full human. Why? Cuz you're playing a game! If you wanted a full 20 minutes break down of someone's life, you'd read a book! (This is also why fanfiction is so powerful, you're allowed to give time to perspective and ideas from these same characters. But I'm also a little bias in that area of fandom work. XD) TV shows are probably the next best form of media to allow exploration of a person. Because you'll be given the time to have an episode be focused on a character. Even then, there's still a lot of information being held back.
But video games?
And because characters can be so openly written with just the basic understanding of how they think/act, that invites us (the audience/players) to add further details to their personalities. We put personal ideas/beliefs/points of views into characters because we want to see our favorite people reflected on how we see them.
(UNDERTALE anyone?)
Bringing this back to Game!Bowser, even with all that he know about him, with the basic idea is he's a villain. Who can also become a hero. We as players/viewers can make him to be so much more because there's still that given freedom.
I'll be honest, trying to write away his sins for almost destroying a lot of things is hard to get past. But we're allowed to give him moments of clarity that shows Bowser's understanding that maybe he's not as correct in his actions as he thought he was. In writing, comics, art, we can offer that different perspective to Bowser that the games will never show.
Sure, he's grumpy and rough around the edges. But do you really think a full on villain at any time would want to work with the heroes? NO! A truly terrible person would never help. If anything, they'd try getting to the problem first to defeat and gain control over whatever was happening so they could come out on top than actually help. Or if anything, just sit back and see how 'powerful' these heroes actual are and figure out a braking point.
But Bowser does help, even if he's stomping his feet in annoyance sometimes. So that gives us a different way to see him. Grumpy, yes. Rude, oh yeah. A villain, absolutely. But we're still able to see the good sides and say, 'You know what, there's hope for you yet.'
Now, with all of this being said, I think this is where the issue lies with Movie!Bowser. We are never made, not ONCE made, to sympathy with Game!Bowser. NEVER! We're never really shown a soft side, unless it's with Junior. And even then, he's not sparkly eyed, looking heartbroken, kind of Koopa. We just interject our sympathy onto him because of how openly written he is as a character.
We can give him softer moments. We're allowed to give him those moments. We're giving more to Bowser than what's actually happening in the games when it comes to him being 'good'.
Movie!Bowser is a straight, up evil person.
Granted, we've only seen him in one movie (there had better be more coming or I swear to everything holy and decent) and Game!Bowser definitely seems to be the one I should be calling out like this given his list of crimes. But there's one major, MAJOR difference between the two of them that allows me to side with Game!Bowser possibly being redeemed.
Movie!Bowser has more range for a personality provided to us on screen. Meaning we're not adding anything to him, Movie!Bowser is on full display for what his character is.
He's not written as a person who tells more than shows. Sure, we get lines for Game!Bowser, we get something of a personality there, but nothing like this. Nothing like the physical movements and facial features that the movie provides.
Movie!Bowser is manipulative. We've seen him smiling/happy. We've seen him triumphant. We've seen him interrogate/torture. We've seen him cocky. We've seen him upset.
We've seen him angry.
I can say that I can't remember seeing Game!Bowser look this angry. Games (focusing specifically on the Mario games right now) only offer so much when it comes to emotions. That's why I love the Luigi Mansion series (and not just because Luigi if my favorite character), mainly 2 and 3, because it really felt like the first time that cut scenes could play out and we got to see emotions. Luigi feels more human in those games than any other. Because they allowed him to have a range, not just a standard standing there and bounce while someone feeds me plot.
And that's the big thing with Movie!Bowser is he's emoting far more than his game counterpart ever could. Which makes him that much more terrifying.
Because if anyone is going to look at these images and say 'Oh, but Bowser's a sweetheart'.
Then you're being fooled. This is manipulation at it's best. This is Bowser playing a role that his minions, probably mainly Kamek, has told him to play because it'll let him take what he wants.
More over, do you notice when he's playing his wide eye, hurt pup look? When his focus is on Peach.
He talks about marrying Peach and all the things he likes about her.
He practices what he's going to say when he'd going to ask Peach to marry him.
He looks crushed that the fantasy that he's built up in his head isn't reality.
The only person I could say that Bowser would be semi decent around would be Peach. But even that's not true! Because what's his idea of a wedding gift to her?
Sacrificing people to lava on during the vows.
What does he do when she puts her foot down on the wedding day?
Bombs her kingdom.
Movie!Bowser has no idea or doesn't even care to worry about what anyone else wants. It's always been about him. Even to the person he's suppose to love the most, it's not love. At least, not a healthy version of love. It's another notch in his belt that says he's gotten a victory.
Heck, if you want a full display on how he really thinks, go back to when he's first confronting Peach. When she says no, what does Bowser do? Pout and turn away and say 'Well, shoot, that didn't work'. Nope. He has Kamek hurt Toad to force Peach to agree. To fall in line with what Bowser's made up fantasy is.
The moment someone doesn't agree with him, it's violence until they agree.
Game!Bowser doesn't sugar coat for anyone his personality. He's in your face, aggressive, and isn't sorry for it. And I like that about him.
Movie!Bowser thinks he can play a part and will get what he wants. And if he doesn't, he can just destroy whatever he wants in a tantrum rage. Movie!Bowser is terrifying, because I can't see that moment where I could possibly offer redemption.
Think about it really, besides Peach, who else did Bowser hurt in this movie?
Tortured Luigi in order to give up any information about his brother. With the threatened promise of being killed in front of Mario as a 'warning'.
Tortured Toad when Peach said 'no'.
Captured Cranky Kong and the Kong Army, holding them and numerous others over a pit of lava.
Heck, Bowser and Mario don't even properly meet until the end of the movie. Yet Bowser is so obsessed with Peach being his bride that any whiff of someone possibly being a rival, of shattering his fantasy, is enemy number one in Bowser's book. Mario just wants to get Luigi back! Yet Bowser's in the mindset that Mario's trying to take everything away from him.
I bet you anything, if we could actually act Bowser why Peach said no to the wedding, he would say it was Mario's fault. That Mario came in and ruined Peach's idea of Bowser for her and that's what caused her to say no. Not that Peach had no interest what so ever, but because Mario beat him to the punch.
"What about the minion saying 'doesn't she hate you?' at the beginning of the movie?"
Bowser's whole plan was to impress Peach with the Power Star. He swore that was going to be the ticket to getting on her good side. This whole plane was built around that idea. He thought she was going to be so impressed!
But who beat him to the punch of impressing Peach?
"Mario has defeated Donkey Kong and won the favor of the Kong Army."
"So was Peach, like, super impressed?"
"Yes, it appears so."
Bowser lost his ticket to winning Peach over before even arriving to the Mushroom Kingdom. At least, in his mind. So what does he do? Kills Mario. Because with him out of the way, Peach would have to be impressed with Bowser, right?
Movie!Bowser's not sad because Peach broke his heart. Movie!Bowser is sad because his reality isn't what it was supposed to be for him. And he hates it when he doesn't get his way. It's either live under his rule and want, or see everything you love destroyed and burned to the ground.
With all this being said, I'm going to focus a little on the fandom for a moment. Because there are a lot of people out there who will defend Bowser until they're blue in the face.
And to that I say good.
People who love Bowser for all the right reasons know he's evil and mean and manipulative and whatever other negative word I used during this rant. But that's what we like about this large Koopa and it's great to see!
The worry I have is for the people who say Peach was 'being mean for rejecting Movie!Bowser'. Really? You'd want to marry someone who's threatened, harmed, and tortured so many people in some twisted idea of love? Um, no thank you.
(PS: If you want me to do another rant for shipping, I will, but I'm just focusing on Bowser for the moment)
Bowser is an amazing villain, one of my favorites. But I will always prefer Game!Bowser over Movie!Bowser for being a 'changed villain'.
Because Game!Bowser is a silly Koopa who can be both terrifying and funny at the same time. He can have moments where I just laugh at how ridiculous he is.
Movie!Bowser terrifies me because I've known people like him. People who will play victim when the other person's done nothing wrong.
Game!Bowser fully owns up to his actions.
I believe that Movie!Bowser thinks everything he does is for the betterment of everyone. Almost as if he's some twisted hero.
And I'm worried about the people who support him and don't see an issue with it. If you like him because he's an amazing villain, super! If you can separate reality from fiction and know that what he's doing is not normal, even better.
But if you're going to stand there and say "Boo Peach, yay Bowser!" then you may need to rethink some of your life choices.

He feels like he's not doing enough as a brother but genuinely forgets that he needs to take care of himself
Not physically but more so emotionally
He beats himself up when making a mistake even if it was out of kindness
He doesn't think things all the way through and just immediately jumps to "I wanna help people!"
And ends up making a bigger mess so he feels like a bad person
( people have reassured him he's not but he plays back how people get mad at him when he messes up and he doesn't know how to forgive himself if someone got THAT mad at him )
He sometimes just gets this burst of love and just hugs one of his siblings or friends
I think he doesn't develop feelings easily ( infact it's kinda hard for him to, not in a bad way )but one time there was a yokai, about his size, and they really enjoyed each other
He didn't tell anyone but he got her number and they still talk and he might have small feelings for her
The reason he hates being alone because it's a PTSD thing ( that only got worse after the kraang thing )
( he was alone and in danger for most of the movie, the only reason he wasn't freaking out because he knew if he did he was fucked )
And he got possessed before he could even lose his shit
But basically I think he got kidnapped by a hunter and held him captive ( either chained, or in a cage ) for 2 days before splinter found him
( yes they searched for him for 2 days )
The hunter would shoot his gun next to the cage ( or restraints ) he was in to purposely mess with him
And if he cried he would get in his face and start yelling until raph forced himself to stop crying because of fear
It was traumatic
Splinter has his own trauma from losing his fucking kid for 2 days, but it still fucks with raph badly
He still remembers it so vividly that it feels like it had only happened a week ago
So add that in top of the kraang doing what they did to him.....
He was only holding it together for Leo tbh
He can't go to certain areas or he'll start to hear the hunter yelling in his face again, like a hallucination
It's gotten a little bit better over time but the kraang set him so far back
He was also already claustrophobic, but if anyone tries to hold him down now he just immediately throws them off
And hard
Anything that really reminds him too much of the past he just starts freaking out
So he doesn't like to be alone :)

The Super Mario Bro. Movie (2023) Review
Potential spoilers ahead...
This movie brought in the various Mario games really well. Some notable references include Luigi's Haunted Mansion while Luigi is in the dark lands, the jungle being all karts, the hat from Odyssey, and the barrels from DK. The fight scene between Mario and DK shows various other gorillas in the background, the rainbow road, and the star power in the final fight as well. There could've been more Yoshi, in my opinion, only showing a Yoshi herd and an egg in the background wasn't nearly enough. They also included aspects of players interacting with the world; such as players driving off rainbow road to gain an advantage, and learning to play the game the same way Mario learns on the practice course Peach shows him.
The animation feels like a combination of video game animation and cinematic animation. The movie's writing does an excellent job of committing to the bit; with the plumbing bit, Bowser's love for Peach, Mario being short, and Luigi being a coward are great examples. On the note of Luigi being a coward, it is clearly only there to make the dark lands/haunted mansion sequence make narrative sense.
The budget for the music in this movie is absolutely crazy and the amount of popular well-known songs on the soundtrack is insane (they could have used some of that money for…actual actors but we're not talking about that yet). During the big party at Bowser's, you can see his kids in the band, so respect the musical talents of the large ass turtles. The song "Peaches" is just as good is I had been lead to believe, and its honestly better than it should be considering what it actually is (Thank you Jack Black, you are a God).
The actual story of the movie was very interesting and manages to appeal to fans of all the different styles of Mario games. The best character in the whole movie is easily the blue star in Bowser's prison, hands down. The ending is clearly setting up for more movies and yet another franchise movie giant.
To top it all off, there's the issue with the casting and vocal performances. They should have just hired actual voice actors, not just actors who had names studio executives felt were big enough to gain attention. Jack Black, however, was fucking amazing. For starters, he did actually have voice acting experience, and Jack Black committed to the bit and was able to be thoroughly convincing in sounding like Bowser. Jack Black was easily the best VO performance in the entire movie, and if he wasn't in it, I'm not sure I'd've been able to finish the movie. Both Chris Pratt and Seth Rogan obviously didn't get the memo about committing to the bit. The beginning of the movie shows us Pratt doing the voice and the accent, but they come up with an excuse to get him to Not commit to the bit and instead he just talks like himself for the rest of the film. Pratt should've committed or just not done it at all. On top of that, you have Rogan saying in an interview that he told the casting department before they got him on board that "if I do it, I'm doing it as me" and after they heard that, they should have just walked away and found someone who would actually play Donkey Kong in way way that would wake the final product what it deserved to be.

With the confirmation of the Zelda movie happening eventually I felt the need to scream (CLICK THROUGH):
-To start, a disclaimer: This would have been closer to the announcement but I was on a trip and then still busy after, so bear with me
-The obvious: This will either be really great or really terrible and either way i am here to devour the memes
-I'm not one of those people who thinks a live action zelda is impossible to make work - if HARDER to make work - and video game movies have recently and slowly been dragging themselves out of the Pit Of Despair and I liked the Detective Pikachu movie and the Sonic movies and the Mario movie but this movie could still easily be really bad and slide them further back into it, especially with some of the people producing it. We'll just have to wait for trailers to cast more judgment. Nintendo having a stranglehold on production again does give me hope weirdly - hopefully things will at least be On Brand
-since condensing most zelda game plots could be Hell I feel like they should honestly do an original version of the zelda story that just follows all the Best Of Tropes like with the mario movie (hey maybe it fits into the timeline somehow and we're all forced to acknowledge it as Lore) but if not I honestly want to see them do Skyward Sword, since it was the origin point. Only problem is no Ganon, so I doubt it.
-I doubt any of the Toon Link games would be chosen since it's not animated, nor any games focusing primarily on particularly young links since Hollywood hates working with kids. So I feel like the most likely ones are Ocarina Of Time (the most defining Zelda at this point even post-BOTW and TOTK), Breath Of The Wild, or Twilight Princess (both of which would be cool). But who knows this could be like Detective Pikachu and we get an oddball pick.
-Someone suggested Jason Momoa as Ganondorf and honestly I want it
-For Link, not Tom Holland because that's the Meme Bad Pick, obviously. I'd honestly say Thomas Brodie-Sangster or Timothée Chalamet
-As for Zelda... Zelda Wiliams. It would be funny and Robin would have been proud.
-If The Rock does not play a Goron character I will be upset
-I feel like Link not speaking is a lost cause probably (even if i think it would be really funny if they cast a big name and he communicated only in grunts) and I'm not opposed to making him doofy because Link is often doofy but by god do NOT make him snark. I'm not even as hard on the MCU and its quips as everyone else is at this point and I actually normally like snarky characters often but if Link talks in ironic quips all the time I would probably die because it doesn't fit him and the Zelda franchise at all. (Also need I remind you we have gotten smarmy Link twice before and both times were awful)
-Given everything we know about it it feels like this film is going in a straightlaced, at least semi-serious, probably dark fantasy film. Which is fine by me but.
-Someone said this film wouldn't be helped by a lot of easter eggs as the Mario movie was. I'm inclined to agree. But I still want to see the easter eggs because I'm drooling at what that could mean for Zelda.
-On a related note I hope there are a lot of like. Genuine fans on the team of this movie. It seemed to help the Mario movie and maybe the second Sonic movie and in at least one instance the Detective Pikachu movie. If they get proper Zelda fans on board it could go a long way
-Please don't make it an isekai. It was fine for Mario because it's been in Mario lore before but again it doesn't fit Zelda.
-Overall, again, I don't care if this movie is good or bad, just if it's INTERESTING. I want to either laugh with this movie or at it. I want the fandom to have fun with this. And I want to soak up the memes like a sponge.

Indigo League Episode 12
This episode we get the last of the Kanto starters, Squirtle! The gang encounters the troublesome Squirtle Squad, Ash and Pikachu both have their life endangered in different ways, and Team Rocket attempted to kill the whole Squad with literal bombs. Yikes.
Say you regularly encounter pit falls like these three do and one of you puts your foot through the ground like Ash has here, would you (a. be careful of the likely pitfall, or (b. crowd in as close as possible?
If you answered (b. you were right and you're also stuck in a hole now.
The Squirtle Squad! Hmmm, I wonder who's the leader. (This is such a cute shot.)
If I recall correctly we actually will be going to their habitat later in the Indigo League so good job setting it up ahead of time show!
Officer Jenny of course Ash knows your name, you share it with every other officer Jenny. If he knows the name of one he knows them all.
This police station has a matching symbol to the one on Jenny's hat. I went back to the other station we've seen so far (in E2) and that one didn't match that Jenny's hat symbol, I wonder if it's something they decided to start doing partway into the show or if them matching this time is a coincidence. We'll just have to wait and see.
Pikachu looks so sad here! Ash, give him a hug. (Pikachu is very cute while sad though.)
I love it when anime does something like this where it's just the facial features visible. (Though just Pikachu's eyes and mouth by themselves are a little scary looking.)

The Pokeani world has so many rickety rotten rope bridges. I wonder how many people die to them per year.
A Pokemon shop! The western town vibe is interesting, though I am suspicious of that beef sign. We're still in the period of time where they still had regular animals in the Pokemon world.
Love Gary just showing up in this episode to knock Ash out, not even notice what he did, and leave.
Also, Ash was unconscious overnight, I'm pretty sure it's really bad if you're unconscious for that long. He should go to the hospital and get checked out.
Ah early Pokemon, where anyone and everyone can have a gun at any given moment.
Ash is so concerned about Squirtle! I love how much he loves just all Pokemon.
And his actions proved he's a good guy to Squirtle! I really feel the bond better with Ash and Squirtle than the one for Ash and Charmander in the previous episode. I wonder if that has anything to do with how difficult Ash and Charmander's bond gets after he evolves.
Get yeeted idiots! Also, I love how Misty, Brock, and the other Squirtles are acting like they're gonna catch Ash and Squirtle but that's totally not happening.
Look how happy they are to have Squirtle join the team!
And that's the episode, Ash has a full team now and all of the starters! Next episode on Wednesday we see Ash catch another pokemon, and we encounter the OG oversized pokemon. (Way before gigantamaxing.)

Impressions: The Super Mario Bros Movie
That movie was %300 pure, liquid Super Mario straight into my veins. It was truly the movie version of playing a Super Mario game. No, it was like playing five Super Mario games at once. You couldn't go thirty seconds without a new game reference! And yet...it works! The references make this feel like a universe with other games in every direction waiting to be explored!
That is, if you've played a Super Mario game or two. That was definitely an issue for some reviewers people.
If you aren't familiar with the Mario games, then...hopefully you like cute, funny characters? Sure this movie isn't for everyone, but I feel like that should have been obvious based on the title.
Illumination was (surprisingly) a good choice for this movie. You know, as a writer, I appreciate deep, thematically rich stories. But when I think of what I want in a "Super Mario Bros" movie, I basically want to see all my toys accurately portrayed on the big screen.
Basically, I wanted to see the Super Mario manga, or a version of the Super Mario Bros Super Show that is more faithful to the actual games. And I'm lucky that the crew shared my vision!
I love how no detail in this movie is arbitrary. And if I sit here and list them all, it would take hours. They even went out of their way to include every baby version of the main characters in flashbacks - except for Baby Bowser of course, but that one makes more sense for a sequel centered around a certain post-credits "Easter Egg"...
Oh, and no baby Donkey Kong. Every baby human main character, I guess. If Peach turns out to be human. They kind of gave her some of Rosalina's backstory by having her be raised by Toads, which is smart. Presumably whatever species Rosalina turns out to be, Peach will probably be too.
This does nothing to explain Peachette though.
If there's one plot detail I think is up for grabs to criticize, it's Mario's decision to guide the Bomber Bill into the home pipe to Brooklyn. Maybe his line of thought was that it would just explode in the ethereal world between pipes, but why would he risk breaking his only way home or bringing the chaos into his own world?
Then there's the dog. I get it, they wanted a scene where Mario and Luigi are plumbing and everything goes wrong. But why does it feel like an entire pre-movie cartoon short? The dog doesn't need to lunge at them more than once. I kept thinking, "just get to the Mushroom Kingdom already!"
By far the weirdest thing about the movie was the decision to make Mario Kart into a Donkey Kong thing. And I'm kind of surprised Miyamoto was okay with this. They portrayed Donkey Kong Country perfectly...aside from making it some sort of go carting paradise where every ape owns their own vehicle.
Of course, minecarts have long been a staple of Donkey Kong, but go carts are more about...well, Donkey Kong Racing. It fits so well, but it feels so weird. And that's why it's perfect for Donkey Kong.
Except for the fact that Funky Kong should have been the one to meet Peach and Mario at the door, not some no-name Kong who also wears sunglasses. How dare they. I'm not even a Funky Kong fan and even I know they that messed that one up.
This movie was a blast. The theater clapped at the end and it's been weeks since the movie came out. People couldn't stop talking about it after the movie. Someone shouted to stay put for the after-credits Yoshi scene. The energy in the theater was really positive. It was a nice, funny, video gamey, family cartoon. That's exactly what I expected, and I'm so happy it proved me right.
There are a lot more thoughts I have about the movie, so much that I was paralyzed by the task of writing all of them and posting them to the point I waited weeks to even finish up this review and post it. So here's the minimum of what I wanted to say. And also,
Congrats, Super Mario, for reaching number one in a whole new industry. It's about time.

Hey.....remember when I said I wasn't gonna go see the Mario movie in theaters again? WHAT IF, HYPOTHETICALLY, THAT WAS A FLATOUT LIE AND I WENT AGAIN EARLIER TODAY???
AND what if I had more thoughts to share somehow, even though I could have sworn I was tapped out and would never do another longform post like this?? Wouldn't that be so very silly of me????
WELL, FUNNY THING
LOOK, I just really wanted to get out of the house and there was a showing in 3D five minutes away from me and I hadn't seen it in 3D! I have seen maybe ONE movie in 3D in my whole life and it was several years ago so I'm not too used to what that's like - and honestly, the effect is pretty cool! Maybe I'm easy to please but I liked the way the rain/ocean spray/ice in the beginning/etc actually seemed like it was in the air around me! (Also, I got a legitimate jolt when the Dry Bones popped out of the ground, I just didn't expect it to seem so CLOSE lololol)
Also, it was pretty delightful that we are several weeks into this movie's release and there was still someone dressed up fully as Mario in the theatre who walked by me. I love people! :D
I am at the point where just NINTENDO'S OPENING LOGO ANIMATION makes me emotional, with Mario and Luigi together and Luigi hopping playfully on Mario's head before running off with Mario jumping after him. They're just the LITTLE RETRO SPRITES and still!!! Brothers!!!!!!!!
During this viewing, I got really into thinking about the lore of the movie!universe specifically and the history of Bowser and his and Peach's conflict. My main question: what is UP with that castle in the Dark Lands? From the brief glimpse we get of the inside, it looks pretty abandoned with stuff littered all over the ground, not like Bowser just left it to go on his crusade. And yet, everyone talks about the Dark Lands as though that is where Bowser currently is and it's also where he lives when he's NOT in a floating airship. Maybe he abandoned that smaller castle years ago and the airship is actually his new and improved castle and it was a part of the Dark Lands before Kamek/magic in general just lifted it into the air at some point? But then why are there Shy Guys actively living in and/or patrolling the old castle still??? HMM
Also, Bowser says he had to spend YEARS searching for the super star! That's a lot of time!!! Have the penguins hidden it away from everyone all this time just to keep it safe? Has Peach known about it all along/done anything to help protect it herself? Is there only one star in existence? Does it regenerate after being used and if so, how long does that take??? I like thinking about all these little details, haha.
ALSO x 2, I'm just interested in Bowser and Peach's interactions before the movie in general. Bowser mentions that they've been "sworn enemies" for quite some time and the way he says "Princess Peach! Brave as ever!" just feels like something you say to someone you've spoken with before/have a little familiarity with that ISN'T just creepy spying/pining from afar, lol. Has Bowser tried to invade in the past? I almost wonder if, in the beginning, Peach was her charitable self who tried very hard to reason with him/strike up a peace treaty but it's just always gone wrong or she's VERY MUCH MISREAD all attempts at flirting on Bowser's part or she has just seen too much evidence of him being cruel/willing to kill to get what he wants in the process and that's why she's like "nah fam we're gonna annihilate this monster and leave not a trace behind, i'm DONE with all that peace stuff" now. She is NOT HAVING IT any longer and honestly? I respect that. Bowser is the worst.
(Slightly related: someone remind me that once I'm done with my fic, I need to go into more detail about another alternative movie scenario I've been thinking about where Mario is able to get rid of the Bomber Bill without the Brooklyn stuff ever happening and a furious Bowser grabs both Peach and Luigi (because every time I'm reminded that they never pay off Bowser's threat to use Luigi to hurt Mario, I become a little more insane) and flees in a smaller airship back to the Dark Lands with Mario & company in hot pursuit, and it's basically a more traditional Mario game finale but maybe there's BOWSER BACKSTORY regarding the Dark Lands castle and also Peach & Luigi being kidnapped together lets them bond and eventually become Breakout Buddies and look, it would be a fun time and I want to flesh it out more, OK)
This movie has GOT to come out on digital soon because I NEED to gif so many things (and I don't want to use camrips!!!) and one of those things is every instance of Mario awkwardly waving hello to strangers. HE DOES IT LIKE 5-6 TIMES, HE DOESN'T KNOW WHAT ELSE TO DO. IT'S SO CUTE

I adore how genuinely touched Mario seems by Peach saying that him not knowing when to quit is a great thing. His little, gentle "thanks" in return makes my heart SOFT. Just makes me think about the vibe of him being the "impulsive" son, the "troublemaker" son in the family and how people like his dad have maybe been tough on him about that quality, and for Peach to just be so excited and look so HAPPY at the concept is so surprising to him -maybe she's the first person outside of Luigi to act like that!

Also forever emotional about the fact that Mario and Luigi have absolutely NO context for what the star is or what it can do when they decide to grab it together - Peach told Mario to go for it, and that's ALL the information available. But the manhole cover is melting and Bowser's flames are literal seconds away from engulfing them. And even so, they're not afraid, because they're together again and whatever happens next, they'll face hand in hand, side by side, and it's that trust, that unbreakable bond that truly makes them invincible at the end of the day, and DON'T MIND ME, I'LL JUST SOFTLY WEEP OVER HERE

I made myself laugh as I was leaving the theater by thinking about the person that had to write that newspaper article at the end about what happened. What must that article read like???? How would you ever begin to be able to describe the events that took place here without sounding like an insane person???? Are the people who didn't see it in person reading this like "uhhhh is this April Fool's Day???" I WOULD HAVE THAT REACTION. I DON'T ENVY THAT PERSON'S POSITION lolol

The Super Mario Bros. Movie
Otherwise known as: "How I Learned to Stop Worrying About Chris Pratt and Enjoy a Video Game Adaptation."
So, first, some non-spoiler thoughts.
Part 1: The Trailers
I don't know who was in charge of the trailer selection to go in front of this movie, but we need a word. Because a 'Happy Gilmore-esque' comedy about a guy trying to impress his girlfriend's family but, oh no~ His Italian dad is weird and behind the times kind of missed the mark.
So did putting the Barbie (2023) teaser in front of this movie. Not like I'm a prude (you all know me as almost anything but), but watching the 'I'll beach you off!/Not if I beach you off first' exchange in a theater with little kids on either side of me seemed like kind of a misfire.
Disney's live-action Little Mer-- I can't even be bothered to type the whole thing out.
And I just found it really weird that Illumination has a second movie coming out this year that they put a trailer in for, but the actual movie wasn't even present that much in its own promotion?
To explain better: the trailer was 'Illumination has brought you such wonderful family features as Despicable Me (long clip), The Secret Life of Pets (long clip), Sing (long clip), Minions (long clip), and Super Mario Bros. The Movie (long clip). Soon they'll release Migration (a few short clips of ducks flying and hiding under a bridge)'
Part 2: Thoughts on the Movie Itself (Which will include some spoilers, so...)
Right off the top of the bat, yes: the movie does move very quickly. Now, for me? This wasn't a hindrance but it was to a degree where it was noticeable so I can see where legitimate movie reviewers are talking about when they mention it.
I like how the movie starts off with Mario and Luigi's plumbing commercial and first job. Builds into the 'regular Joe'/no one believes in them-setup. Though, fuck a duck, why is their family full of such assholes? 'Luigi would be able to get somewhere if you weren't always dragging him down', okay so let's just continue to work for a guy who was a douche to him. Cool, fine.
While Mario's initial walk with Toad upon reaching the Mushroom Kingdom was kind of 'eh' to me, I love how the Mushroom Kingdom was handled: bright, active without being spastic, and allowed the setting itself to narrate rather than having the characters go 'And this is a store! And this is the road! And this is how we get money!' Like a lot of adaptations can fall into.
Peach was fine. I literally have no idea why people were trying to create discourse about her portrayal in this movie. She's not some emasculating girlboss, she's not 'Daisy wearing pink'; she's a competent monarch who just happens to be able to platform and ride a motorcycle.
Also, good on the writers for executing things where you can interpret Peach having a thing for Mario but they could also just be really close friends (kind of like Judy and Nick at the end of the first Zootopia film).
I love how we were all worried about Chris Pratt's voice-acting 'just being Chris Pratt' when, in reality, what we needed to worry about was D.K. because ay-my-me is that performance 'Just Seth Rogen'.
Jack Black definitely had the most fun with this movie. I can't believe they okayed the 'Peaches' song...
Why was Lumalee a Nihilist? Like, I'm not even mad but that was such a strange choice.
The musical score was good. Replacing the original music made for the Jungle Kingdom intro with "Take on Me" was a bit of a miss. Also, please: credit the actual composers, not just "'Song' from 'Game'"
However, even with all of these praises, I do have to detract a point for one crucial misfire:
They really couldn't have had Mario and Luigi do their finishing blow while saying 'So long, eh Bowser?' As a perfect referential send-off? For shame...
Final Rating: 8.75/10
I wanted a good time that celebrates the Mario franchise with great information and for someone to be there to whack Illumination in the head whenever they tried their bullshit... And that's what I got!

I'm gonna need the current animation-twitter-blogosphere-youtube-content-mill to understand something... Or at least, listen for a bit. I'm no expert, but as someone who has watched box office - particularly animation box office - for nearly two decades now, I wanna talk about what's going on with a lot of animated features nowadays in a post-outbreak world that's still actually dealing with COVID-19.
Box office, the way Hollywood measures it, is already archaic beyond belief at this point. Success and the movie's justification for existence being determined by a thing's opening weekend and not the legs, the longevity beyond theaters, etc. etc. It's created this weird culture of deeming things "flops" and also creating this weird obsession with marketing.
And apparently more than one of the YouTube Toon Opinion Industrial Complex content mills are already calling a movie like MIGRATION, which is currently legging it up in a way that Illumination's SING movies did during the holiday frame in their respective release years, a money-loser... Like, pump the brakes, will ya?
I don't care if it's clickbait or whatever, like, c'mon... We're reducing the hard work of animators and filmmakers to how much the movie makes in its first weeks of existence.
The way I see it, we're in an era now where...
Theater trips are goddamn expensive and are kind of a gamble. Over $50-70 for a family to see a movie, with concessions added, and your experience may SUCK. (Take it from me, 8-year movie theater employee and loooong-time moviegoer here who has had plenty a shit experience.) It's a gamble each and every time.
And the same applies to maybe a friend group, or a dating couple, or even older adults looking to watch something.
So, either the movie has to be something audiences are familiar with AND know what they're going to get out of it (i.e. MARIO, certain Marvel movies, etc.), or it's lucky to hit audiences in the right place at the right time (OPPENHEIMER, etc.) and luckily tap into the zeitgeist- if not change the zeitgeist singlehandedly.
Box office alone is a gamble. When you start a movie 4 years before release, how the hell do you know what the world is going to look like by the time the thing is completed?
I'm repeating myself, like a broken mp3, I know I know.
But, that's how I see it... Thus, animated family movies and their usual family audiences are in a unique position at the moment. A pretty solid-looking, more original animated family film from Pixar or DreamWorks or Sony had more chances of opening with $40m than they do now. Say, a movie that's not based on a pre-existing IP or is based on one that was never before adapted into a movie or TV series (think something like THE BAD GUYS).
Of course, you have your MARIOs and SPIDER-VERSEs. Those were guaranteed big openers. Films like ELEMENTAL and MIGRATION weren't so clear-cut. Even TROLLS 3 opened fine-ish, significantly below what TROLLS took in some 7 years ago. PUSS IN BOOTS 2 was hampered by bad weather on the East Coast, yeah, but its opening wasn't going to be anything special either. Legs... Or wings in MIGRATION's case, cat claws in PUSS's case... Make all the difference.
They always have, actually. Animated family features usually relied on strong word-of-mouth if they had some kind of adult appeal. It's something similar to what Walt Disney had once "realized" in the late 1950s. Something to the tune of "If the film really appealed to mom... Then mom takes the whole family... And then tells all her friends, and they go, and everyone goes."
So I feel we're in an era where the success of an animated feature can NOT be determined too early. Remember how ELEMENTAL was written off as a big ol' flop, immediately? And that Pixar was toast? And that they needed to bring the Hawaiian shirt pervert control freak back in order to get a box office hit again?
Weeks later, everyone was singing a different tune. ELEMENTAL was an underdog, it had a "comeback" story. No folks, that's just classic animation legs. People liked the movie after hearing from the few people who saw it... That it was actually worth checking out.
But these films need the legs more than ever before, now. Especially in a competitive marketplace where stuff is coming out every week, and there's always something just as good at home to put on. (Some people are trying to suggest that Netflix's LEO cut into Disney's WISH... Because it's at home, right there, no overpriced snacks or disruptive strangers next to you.)
Luckily, TROLLS 3 and MIGRATION were lower with their budgets. Cost in the sub-$100m regions, weren't required to make half a billion like the $200m-costing ELEMENTAL and WISH were expected to do. Which is kinda unfair to begin with, but I digress. Pixar is sure to blow $175m+ on their future features, and WDAS too, while DreamWorks, Illumination, and Sony try to keep it below $100m. Even if it's through dubious means, like outsourcing and shitty pay.
So, nowadays with animated family movies, it's a waiting game. MIGRATION, as of now, is currently at $77m domestically. That's already 6.4x its opening weekend, a fantastic multiplier for any film. By the time it wraps up, it'll likely make over 8x its opening weekend, landing amongst the biggest multipliers for a post-90s animated feature. That Christmas-to-winter break-to-boredom season slot does wonders, doesn't it? And of course, the movie being liked by those who saw it. WISH could've been a leggy Thanksgiving/Christmas movie - like TANGLED and FROZEN and MOANA were, but audiences clearly weren't digging it much.
Of course, it's not easy to do that, either. Sometimes a thing just won't land. LIGHTYEAR, for example. That's also part of the gamble. More often than not, though, these kinds of movies usually get a good audience grade, MIGRATION's no different... So, it's leggin' it up, winging it.
Which is why we should maybe... Wait a few weeks on these kinds of things? I know these "content creators" have bills to pay and have to crank-crank-crank stuff out, but still-
