Sugar and Spice: Part 1

(E.M. x Fem!Reader x S.H.) Part 2 Series Masterlist.

Summary: Steve has massive crush on you, Eddie’s childhood bestfriend who just came home from collage. The only problem is you despised him in highschool and he’s pretty sure Eddie’s in love with you.

Warnings: Eventual smut, pining, love triangle, no upside down, eventual steddie x reader, angst with a happy ending, hurt/comfort, fluff, no use of Y/N so definitely a billion pet names. There’s not really any for this chapter, it’s mostly setting the scene for the rest of the story. Mentions of sex and some swearing. I will add additional warnings each chapter! But still my work is always 18+MNDI

A/N: Okay I found this in my docs and I was reading over it and got inspired to keep writing it. I’ve had this idea in my head for a long time about a Reader who has a kind of like pastel goth type of aesthetic. Like she plays D&D and loves horror but also really loves chick flicks and pink. She listens to Black Sabbath but then will turn around and listen to Blondie in the same 10 minutes. Collects Care Bears but has read every Anne Rice book. I feel like both Eddie and Steve would lose their minds over that. There will be no physical descriptions of reader besides the outfits she wears, which will be things like big chunky goth boots and fuzzy pink sweaters. Ngl it’s kinda self indulgent of me but I hope there’s others who can relate to her.🤭 divider I used is by: @firefly-graphics

Steve wasn’t obsessed with you, at least he tried to convince himself that was the case. He hadn’t seen you since you graduated and moved to the city. But ever since you’ve been back it’s like he sees you everywhere. You come into his work sometimes and rent horror movies, or on rare occasions you rent something totally cute and left-field like The Little Mermaid. You wore outfits that were somehow the hottest and cutest thing he’s ever seen at once, his favorite he’s ever seen you in was this short little black skirt and a pink button up cardigan that you replaced the buttons with little skulls all brought together by the big platform boots you’re usually wearing. That contrast just made him more infatuated with you. You were like sugar and spice wrapped up in one really beautiful girl.

But there were TWO major problems, one being that you hated him In highschool. He was an arrogant asshole who thought he was better than everyone, could do whatever he wanted and looked down on the kind of people you hung around. You were pretty quiet but outspoken and opinionated when you wanted to be, kept close to the few friends you had and always had your head in some kind of horror or vampire book that Steve would definitely not understand but would’ve totally listened to you talk about all day just to hear you talk about something you loved. He always thought you were pretty, even in highschool when you used to dress a lot more reserved. Mostly ripped jeans, the occasional Care Bears tee, and shirts of bands he didn’t know. He even asked you out once Junior year before he got with Nancy and you laughed in his face and said “yeah fucking right Harrington, good one” But now? You’re always wearing those little mini skirts, low cut tank tops, and ripped up fishnets. Steve literally feels like he can’t think around you.

Which brings him to problem number two…Eddie. You and Eddie are bestfriends and have been since middle school, he’s part of the reason you never liked Steve because of the way he and his friends treated Eddie. Even though Steve was never directly mean to YOU, his friends were and that was enough. But Steve and Eddie had a recently developed… acquaintanceship due to their mutual friendship with Dustin. It took some time and convincing but once they got past their preconceived notions of each other they were able to be civil. Eddie being in the group meant when you came back naturally you were integrated in as well. Which means Steve has seen you in an actual social setting multiple times now.

You think that would be great, right? Wrong. Eddie was constantly touching you. Holding your hand, putting his arms around your waist, you sitting IN HIS LAP. It drove Steve fucking crazy, especially because he knows that Eddie loves you and he feels just a little bad about it because he had actually started to really like Eddie and maybe even began to see him as a friend. But seeing him all over you drove him insane and made him have a bad taste in his mouth every time he heard his name. He was pretty sure you loved Eddie. The way you looked at him and the gentle way you handled him and spoke to him like he wasn’t the resident metalhead drug dealer but a giant teddy bear that needed to be hugged and cared for.

Steve would’ve given up in an instant if you said you were Eddie’s girl, but you always said you guys were bestfriends despite the fact that Eddie definitely called you his girl on multiple occasions to the entire group. You definitely had feelings for him. He could see it but there was also something keeping you from making it official and that gave Steve hope. Especially once you warmed up to him and started sitting on HIS lap sometimes. You would just come and plop down across his knees looking at him all sweet like it was the most casual thing and you didn’t just make his brain short circuit. You started calling him cute little pet names and kissing his cheek every time you saw him.

Again, these things would all be fantastic IF you didn’t do all the same things and more with Eddie. Every time you sat on Eddie’s lap he literally wanted to rip you off of him and kiss you right in front of Eddie’s smug face. He was always smirking at Steve over your shoulder because he knew Steve liked you. He confronted him about it last week when they were at the arcade with Dustin and Mike.

“So. You like her don’t you?” Eddie just asked him out of the blue. Steve looked at him with a confused look on his face not really registering what he meant at first “Huh? Like who?”

“Don’t play dumb man, you know who I’m talking about” Eddie scoffed and rolled his eyes

“Why would you think she would ever like you back? You treated us like shit in highschool and just because she’s more confident and can stand to be in the same room as you, now you want her? Fuck that. She deserves better than that, she is so much more than how she looks.”

Steve was kind of taken back at first, knowing he wasn’t exactly wrong “You don’t think I know that Munson? I don’t just like her because she’s hot. She also has this confidence and energy about her that’s just really attractive. She’s fucking funny and not afraid to be herself. She’s got that whole sugar and spice thing going on where she’s so sweet and gentle one second and the next she’s cussing like a sailor going off on these cute little tangents. I thought we established I’m not the guy I was in highschool anymore. I’m not some player trying to go through women. I like her.” he kind of didn’t mean to say ALL of that but it just kept coming out once he started talking about you he couldn’t help it.

“Okay I get it, you actually like her. Either way she’s never going to go for you, you aren’t even her type.” He grabbed the sleeve of Steve’s bright blue crew neck “I’ve never seen her be into a pretty boy like you, she likes dudes who look like they’re part of the lost boys clan or the dudes she sees on MTV.”

Steve couldn’t help but roll his eyes “Sooo, you then? If you love her so much then why aren’t you with her?” Eddie flushed and his face fell slightly “because man, she’s the most important person in my life. Imagine if we got together for real and then we broke up? Things wouldn’t be the same between us, I might lose her entirely”

“When you say ‘for real’ what does that mean?” Steve asked him, hoping it didn’t mean what he thought it meant.

“I mean we do a lot of couple things, we go on bestfriend dates, we are super affectionate with each other, we fuck sometimes, but both of us are scared if we decided to be together for real it would ruin it” Eddie shrugged like he didn’t just metaphorically punch Steve in the chest with that information.

“So what? Are you guys exclusive or what? Because if you’re not, I’m going to ask her out.” Steve just shrugged trying to play it off.

“Dude. Are you seriously going to ask out my girl after what I just said!?”

“Yeah, DUDE. You just said she wasn’t yours so is she or isn’t she?”

“Now that I finally have you around without Eddie I can ask the question I’ve been dying to ask, what’s the deal with you two? Are you like, together?” Robin suddenly asked you out of the blue.

Her and Nancy finally convinced you to have a girls day with them. You went and got mani pedis and picked up lunch so you could eat it back at Nancy and Jonathan’s apartment while you watched some movies Robin got from work.

“I mean… Technically? No. You could say we are like bestfriends with benefits I guess? We have kind of been fooling around off and on since sophomore year of highschool when we lost our virginity to each other.”

“And you’re… okay with that?”

“Yeah Robin, I’m okay with it. We decided a long time ago that us being together for real wasn't really an option. Imagine if we broke up? I couldn’t handle losing him.” You bit your lip, just the thought of losing Eddie made you anxious.

Now you had Nancy curious “So have you ever been with anyone else? Or are you guys like exclusive friends with benefits? Because if you’ve only ever been with him I’d say you’re pretty much together anyways.”

“Oh yeah, I’ve had hookups and flings, so has Eddie. I had a few guys I went on a couple dates with when I was gone at school but I’ve never had an actual relationship really. Neither has he.”

“So you’re telling us, you’ve been fucking on and off and on for almost EIGHT YEARS, never had a real relationship, and yet you guys still aren’t actually together? Don’t you think that’s maybe the reason neither of you have ever had a relationship? You’re stuck on each other?” Nancy, always the voice of reason.

“I absolutely know that’s why, I compare every guy to Eddie and no one has measured up. He treats me like a princess, why would I want a boyfriend who treats me anything less than that?” You shrugged and took another bite of your egg roll.

“Okay but what about when you do find that person? Or he does? What then? Things will change either way.” Robin questioned. She had her own reasons for bringing this all up in the first place. She knew Steve liked you, and he made her promise not to mettle but just asking if you were single isn’t meddling, right?

“I don’t know Robin, we’ve never talked about it. We will cross that bridge when the time comes.” You hoped they would let it go after that. It’s not that you necessarily didn’t want to talk about your relationship with Eddie, it’s just whenever anyone brings up that it probably has an eventual expiration date you feel like your whole world is crashing down.

“So there’s really no one you’ve ever thought you really really liked?” Okay, maybe she was reaching meddling territory now.

“Nope. Never. Can we just watch dirty dancing now?”

You didn’t feel like elaborating more than that, especially since recently there was someone you’d started to like. It was confusing and very much against your will but you had started to develop a small crush on Steve. You tried really hard to give him the cold shoulder when you first got back, you spent years with feelings of animosity towards him but if even Eddie could give him another chance you figured you could too. Then of course he had to be just so sweet, and such a gentleman, always telling you that you looked pretty and he smelled so good. It honestly made you want to punch him in the face. Or kiss him. Or both.

Robin narrowed her eyes at you but decided to drop it for now, even though she could tell there was definitely something you weren’t telling them with how quickly you decided to change the subject.

“Yeah okay, let’s watch the movie. But I’m not letting this go forever.”

“I didn’t even think for a second that you would.” You laughed and pressed play on the VHS.

Your love life wasn’t brought up anymore after that but that didn’t keep you from thinking about it. What would happen if Eddie got a girlfriend? You and him were never exclusive but the thought of him actually loving someone made you feel sick. Did he feel the same way? You hoped he did. Does that mean you want things with him to be exclusive? You’d never really allowed yourself to have those thoughts but now you were starting to wonder.

Then there was Steve, who just added to your confusion. Something about him just drew you to him, even back in highschool when you felt nothing but negative feelings toward him it was like he was everywhere you looked. Maybe you always had a small crush on him but would’ve never in a million years admitted it to yourself back then. It’s not like you would’ve ever had a chance, he treated everyone like you like dirt under his shoe. He never bullied you directly but him picking on your friends was enough to tell you how he probably felt about you too. Then you remember that one time Junior year when he asked you out, did he actually mean it? The thought that he might like you made your insides heat up and you felt like one of those girls you used to make fun of in highschool for swooning over him.

Robin could practically see the gears turning in your head, it was very obvious you weren’t watching the movie at all and she knew she told Steve she wouldn’t involve herself but she just had this feeling…

“You like Steve don’t you?” Robin’s voice snapped you out of your cycle of spiraling thoughts and you whipped your head around to look at her.

“What!?”

since i’ve been on the rockstar!eddie brainrot train lately, i might as well commit

so, i’ve been obsessed with “silver springs” by fleetwood mac (especially this https://youtu.be/eDwi-8n054s?si=YYRskhhIto-HR0Hj performance (you probably know the one i’m talking about, and if you don’t, you should really watch it)) this past few weeks, and i keep thinking about steddie breaking up in their early twenties and eddie taking off to some big city with cc where he gets famous afterwards. and so it’s the 10th anniversary of their break up and, as much as eddie tried to tell himself he had moved on, he got on stage and sang “silver springs” (which was one of steve’s favorite songs that they used to listen to together all the time) in the most rage-induced, heartbroken way possible as the closing song of the concert.

and this, coincidentally, is the one cc concert steve decided to go to, because he too hadn’t moved on and he thought it would be bitterly ironic to go to eddie’s concert on the exact day 10 years had passed since their break up. he didn’t want for eddie to find out, so he went incognito, didn’t even take robin with him because he could tell himself how pathetic he was being all on his own, thank you very much.

but when eddie started singing the song, he just. froze. and then, when eddie sang “you’ll never get away from the sound of a man that loves you” (and he didn’t change the tense, he didn’t say “loved” instead of “loves” while he changed the “woman” to “man”, so it couldn’t be for the sake of not changing the song, it must have meant something, didn’t it? please let it mean something) he just started pushing through the people to get to the stage, ignoring the shouts of the other fans. he jumped on the stage just as eddie sang that line for the second time, and when eddie saw him he just stopped immediately, while steve practically ran up to him and proceeded to lay one on him in the most dramatic-ass way possible in front of thousands of people.

and when they finally parted steve just said “i guess i couldn’t, uh, get away” and eddie started crying-laughing, while the crowd went fucking wild and the security people were thinking “what the actual fuck is going on, do we need to haul this guy off the stage?” and eddie, ever the performer, continued singing (because the rest of the band just kept playing the instrumental part, because like, what the fuck else do they do?) and basically serenaded the rest of the song to steve, tears running down both of their faces and eddie not taking his eyes off steve for even a second.

and when they finally got to the end of the song, eddie gently put his hand on steve’s face as he sang “you could be my silver spring”, and when the lyrics ended eddie tugged steve in for another kiss. the crowd was screaming for an encore, now absolutely feral, but eddie, absolutely flustered and shellshocked, just shot off a “thank you, *insert city*! you’ve been great, but i have some… stuff to do” and steve went beet fucking red as they ran backstage.

and then they make up (and make out) and live happily ever after, together. the end.

you may consider this a fic prompt. or maybe i will finally person up and write this myself, we may never know.

BAMS POV

I walk into Ryan’s room holding a speaker and set it up right next to his face and blast sex dragons full volume and Ryan barley even wakes up he justa rolls over and puts the pillows over his head.

“Ryan wake up in 6 hours we’re going to the concert aren’t you excited”

“Why did you wake me up?”he replies from under the pillow

“ Because your coming with me”I kick Ryan until he falls off the bed and wait downstairs for him to be ready and we get in the car and go to the skate park and I landed one of the tricks I’ve been trying to do for ages.

We were there for about 2:30 hours and we drive back to castle bam and I run upstairs to shower and pick out my clothes I need to look great for y/n I hope I can meet her.

“Dunn cmon we need to pick up the others.”

“Dude I’ve been ready for an hour your the one trying to make yourself look sexy for y/n because you love her” he teases me about my longtime crush of the bands lead singer.I throw a pillow at his face and get in the car.

I’ve picked up the other guys and we’re on the way to the concert and I’m so excited it’s gonna be sick.once we get inside there’s a half hour until it starts and Dunn says that he needs to check something and walks off.

RYANS POV

I walk over to the bands room and security let me in and y/n comes over embracing me in a hug. “Hey Ry didn’t think I’d be seeing you here what do I owe the pleasure?”

“Yknow in the bar when I got that creepy biker to back off and I ended up getting beat up you said you owe me one so I was wondering if you could help me out”

“Sure whatever you need”

“Well my best friend bam has a huge crush on you and he has for years probably since you started preforming so I was hoping that you could call him out or something”

“Why because I know that you have a giant heart but you seem a bit sketchy to me right now.”

“Well we’re doing a show viva la bam and it would be so funny seeing him be all shy and embarrassed because you speak to him it would be amazing.”

“Just for you I’ll do it but I better be getting a visit from you this week I’m not here for too long I wanna see my friends a bit”

“This is why I like you y/n ok we will be right at the front shouldn’t be too hard to see us break a leg”

BAMS POV

Me and the guys push our way to the front wich wasn’t very easy because of all the crazed fans but I’m used to it.we can almost touch the stage there’s only 10 minutes and Ryan’s just got here while getting a drink poured on him for pushing but who cares.

Raab pulls out the Camrea and holds it in my face “bam what do you think of y/n?”

“She’s a fuckin rockstar and her bands the shit and she’s the hottest person ever”

“And what would you say to her”

“Id tell her that she’s sex on legs”

“Dude your’e fully obsessed”Ryan laughs at me and be grabs the camera at himself. “Fun fact he has a huge poster of her in his room that he pro-“

“First of all it’s the poster of the whole band not just her and second who wouldn’t want a hot girl in their room” I justify to the Camera the red and blue lights flash on making everyone scream waiting for the band to start.

Y/n walks out of the smoke and with all the lights in my eyes it takes a second for them to focus but I can see her up close in person she’s wearing this skin tight latex looking short dress and her tits look great.

Once the music starts the crowd goes crazy and I can hear everyone shouting along to the lyrics and even some people shouting that they want to have sex with her and I’m pretty sure I hear someone propose.

It’s probably my insane crush on her but I swear she kept looking right at me. And sometimes when she got to the edge of the stage I could just about see up her dress and see the curve of her ass.

Y/N POV

Throughout the show I couldn’t keep my eyes off one of Ryan’s friends I was hoping that he was bam he was gorgeous but I couldn’t stare or I’ll give it away

Before we do one last song I wanna get to know some of you guys does that sound alright?” Everyone screams out which makes a chuckle leave my cherry red lips.

“What does that sign say?” I squints my eyes to look closer and read out the sign so everyone knows what it says

“I married my wife because she looks like you. You know you could’ve asked me you never know could of said yes.”

I hear this high pitch screaming not too far from the front and see a teenage girl trying to get my attention.

What’s your name girl in the leopard print top?

“Savvanah it’s my birthday today and I love you so much and if it wasn’t for you I probably wouldn’t be here we actually met last year at th-“

“At the bowling alley right omg I remember you your one of the sweetest girls and I hope that you have had a good birthday”

Finally I look down to Ryan and try and gold back my smile “what about you have anything fun to share?”

Yeah actually my famous best friend bam here is like totally I love with you” he manages to finish his sentence before he gets punched in the chest by bam who’s cheeks are even darker than my lipstick.

“I do no-“

“You don’t love me aww that makes me sad bam”

“Well everyone I have some news we have a celebrity here today isn’t that exciting come on up bam”

He doesn’t move for a second until one of his friends push him forward and he jumps up onto the stage keeping a distance from me.

I walk over to him and grab his hand to pull him closer “so bam are you s fan”I hold my microphone to his lips and he just nods before answering “yeah a huge fan I think you rock and your totally hot”if it’s even possible his face blushes more which I do laugh at

“Well bam I think your pretty hot too” I grab his colar of his red button up and smash my lips onto his and feeling him immediately kiss back and I bite his lip and find the opportunity to slip my younger into his mouth.

Without breaking the kiss I grab his hands that are being kept at his side and move them up my body I grind my hips onto his before pulling away from the kiss hearing everyone cheer.

“Since your famous and all can I get your autograph. Does anyone have a pen?” About 10 pens all at once get flung onto the stage and i mana to catch a black sharpie and give it to bam.

He starts to pull my arm up to sign but I shake my head and move his hand up to my tits and he slowly leans in having to hold them so he can sign it properly and once he’s done I look down and see bam written across my chest and it look pretty sexy.

Bam jumps back down into the crowd and we finish our last song and I notice how his friends got the whole thing on video. After me and the band had walked off stage most people began to leave and some are waiting behind hoping to see us and get photos.

I sit down on the sofa chugging a bottle of water and talking with the rest of the band before security knocks on the door and says that some boys are here to see us and I say to let them in knowing it’s Ryan with his friends.

They all walk into the room and we all greet eatchother and when I make eye contact with bam I see him get a bit shy so I try to ease the tension by pulling him over to sit next to me.

“Did you like the show?”

“Yeah it was great wasnt it bam?”chris asks him while raising his eyebrows

“Uhm yeah it was really good your all really cool I had a good time.”

“I’m glad that u all enjoyed yourselves.” I say to the group before announcing to the whole group. “I had a great time as well your a good kisser bam I’ll give it to you”

After we all chat for a bit our manager comes in to the room and tells us that we should probably get going back to the hotel soon before fans figure out where we’re staying and try and break in.so we all get up and say our goodbyes and I give each of them a hug and when bam tries to give me a hug I reject it

“Really a hug I think we’re passed that” and I give him another kiss this one not as aggressive as the one on stage and I pull away before kissing him on the cheek leaving a lipstick stain on his face.

Then ryan gives me a hug and whispers in my ear “when I told you he he a crush on you I didn’t think you would do that”

“neither did I I suprised myself you could have said how hot he was”

Hi Anon!

Nothing beats Yoongi’s D-DAY tour for me. My god what an experience. I was fortunate to attend multiple stops and I still have fever dreams in the middle of the day remembering how hard I was screaming along to Burn It and Huh, how my friend burst into tears during Snooze, how I choked up a bit during Life Goes On and finally lost it on The Last. The encore tours gave me the emotional equivalent of a blood transfusion. Seeing Jimin, Namjoon, and Jungkook on stage in a proper concert setting for the first time in almost a year, was really the best parting gift and I’ll always be grateful to Yoongi for it. I love that man very, very much.

That cute practice session Yoongi did for the ‘I’m so cute’ or whatever challenge with Jimin too, subbing ARMYs with screaming plushies and the live he did reading fan messages teasing us about his seven tattoo… and then that cheeky reveal after the tour ended…

Yoongi gave me everything and more with his album and the tour.

Other members too:

- SeokJin going to Argentina to promote The Astronaut with Coldplay was incredible. The planning and organizing behind that feat couldn’t have been easy but somehow they made it work and LatAm ARMYs were finally able to see at least one Tannie for the first time in a long while. That really was amazing.

- Taehyung’s Tiny Desk performances are 🤌🏽

- I loved how Jimin really thought outside the box with his promotions, choosing to go on many really fun Korean variety shows. These are shows BTS either hadn’t done ever or in something like 5 years. A lot of my K-ARMY friends loved how Jimin seemed to prioritize them fully in ways that hadn’t been done for a while.

- I tried hard to attend Joon’s small concert but work commitments didn’t allow that possibility, but I also really love his promotion choices. My partner (surprisingly) has become a tiny bit obsessed with Joon’s Tiny Desk performance lol, so I suspect Joon has gained a new fan.

- Think I’ve already talked about how Hobipalooza was the concert highlight of 2022 for me. Hobi had such a short time to put everything together, and I’m proud of him for going out of his comfort zone a bit sending out invites and throwing the launch party. I loved seeing him just celebrate his success, seeing the other members chill out and have a good time.

- It was nice seeing that at least one member did not forget Europe exists with their promotions (😭), so I’m glad Jungkook could make the trip over to promote Seven in the UK.

The rapline’s album projects are easily some of the best releases this year in any genre for me. And I’m not even trying to be biased. Corroborated by critics reviews, each album is a solid, cohesive, and cerebrally stimulating piece of art and I’m so proud of them for putting it together. It’s easy to see how BTS has become the biggest band in the world when you have these three men who can stand as respected artists in their own right, being the bedrock of the music created by BTS for the last 10 years.

Jimin’s debut with FACE ended k-pop in 2023. I’m not sure if you’re aware, but the industry as we know it, life as we know it, Jimin as we knew him, ended in March 2023. What Jimin did with Set Me Free Pt 2 still gives me goosebumps when I think about it. That song was a warning shot, a small mercy to the industry to warn them in advance of who Jimin is prepared to become as a solo artist and as Jimin of BTS, and I cannot overstate how excited I am for his next project. FACE as an album is the complete package. His songs are just good. Like, actually good. Good enough to play anywhere and any time. That’s the kind of music Jimin makes. Imagine hearing Face-off in a concert arena… imagine hearing the intro play before he comes on stage. Can you even imagine….

Lol I’m starting to hurt myself with these imagines.

Taehyung’s album too is very good (though these days it only gets plays from me in the evenings). And while Seven isn’t my favorite release, it’s still a well made song that Jungkook of course has done a phenomenal job with. Twice now he’s had to promote it outdoors in very bad weather and he’s kept his vocals stable and well projected. He’s working hard and I’m hoping it translates well into work done for his solo album debut later this year.

I have almost no complaints in the debut solo showcases from all the members, in their promotion styles, and in the overall presentation. These albums were all very decent and respectable first showings from the members of the biggest group in the world. The response from the general public and professional critics has been very favourable, and the fandom has supported each member to be as successful as one would expect for anyone from BTS.

Was tagged by @surgicalpen1sklinik to list my 9 current favorite albums ✨ Tough one to define but here goes… I guess gonna list 9 albums I’ve been spending tons of time with lately:

Talk About the Weather — Red Lorry Yellow Lorry (1985): Was recently reminded of the moment I had with these guys years ago when I was first diving deeper into post punk and I hadn’t really revisited them since. This album is just so good. Such an underrated goth classic.

Burning Bridges — Naked Eyes (1983): Another underrated classic, synthpop this time! Just such solid fun 80s pop, some huge hits on this album but some of the lesser known tracks are suuuuch gems.

The Wall — Pink Floyd (1979): After watching the film adaptation I’ve been kind of obsessed ngl. Whole album is fantastic (duh) but the last like 10 songs in particular just absolutely blow my mind honestly. I’ve had “In the Flesh” stuck in my head for like a week.

Technophelia — Geneva Jacuzzi (2016): After seeing her live recently I’ve just been so enamored by her, this album in particular is just so so so fantastic. A sound I’ve been missing honestly. I said it in the tags of a post recently but she’s giving such a perfect blend of Severed Heads Siouxsie Sioux realness, it’s to die for.

The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars — David Bowie (1972): The Wall had me thinking about other concept albums I’ve loved so I’ve also been revisiting this one; I had a massive Bowie phase in high school lol. It’s obviously a cold take to say this album is great but tbh I’ll confidently call “Moonage Daydream” one of my absolute favorite songs of all time. It’s so special to me.

The Correct Use of Soap — Magazine (1980): And speaking of favorites of all time, goddamn I love Magazine. I love all Magazine, but I’ve been vibing really hard with this album recently for whatever reason. Howard Devoto is one of my favorite lyricists of all time too.

RAT WARS — HEALTH (2023): Another band I saw recently that just destroyed me, they’ve put on such an insanely good live show both times I’ve seen them now so of course I’ve been listening through their most recent album (and more!) a bunch over the last couple of weeks.

Last Rights — Skinny Puppy (1992): And back to the concept album theme; is it a hot take to call Last Rights a concept album? To me it’s the greatest concept album of all time. I could write a novel on this one so I’ll just leave it at that. Love love love love love.

Idols — Indradevi (2018): It blows my fucking mind that Indradevi is so slept on. Genuinely abysmal that they only have FORTY-ONE monthly Spotify listeners. One of my all time favorite bands, Matthew Setzer’s Cambodian pop / drum and bass / dark electronic fusion side project. Please listen to Indradevi.

Jad Fair’s music has been described as “art punk,” “primitive rock,” “naive pop,” and “experimental,” though none of those labels quite capture what it is. Never encumbered by the conventions of songwriting or technical virtuosity, or the idea that an instrument should be tuned, the guitarist/singer/visual artist always made the music that felt most natural. It’s not an experiment, he has said. It just is.

In the mid 1970s Fair started Half Japanese with his brother, David. In 1980 they released their famously audacious debut, a triple album called Half Gentlemen/Not Beasts. It was a raw explosion of teenage boy id. The brothers, both on vocals, indulged obsessions (girls, mostly) over discordant guitars and drums that bubbled and burst like boiling water.

Half Japanese has released many records since, in addition to the mountains of music that Fair has put out over the years, solo and in collaboration with Daniel Johnson, Yo La Tengo, Teenage Fanclub and many others. Over the course of 2021 he released two albums a week on Bandcamp, and then started making music with singer/songwriter/multiinstrumentalist Samuel Locke Ward. They just released their second record, Destroy All Monsters about which Dusted’s Margaret Welsh wrote that “In its warmth and sincerity, Destroy All Monsters straddles a strange line: It impersonates flimsy holiday novelty but resonates on a deeper level. Here are some of Fair’s favorite records.

It’s difficult to just choose 10 albums. There are so many albums that I love.

The Shaggs — Philosophy Of The World

I first heard Philosophy Of The World in 1979. I was given a cassette of it and immediately took to it. It was like no other album I’d heard. The music and lyrics are so sweet and sincere. I was very pleased that I was asked to do cover art for the release of The Dot Wiggin Band’s album Ready! Get! Go!. When I saw Dot’s band perform I was surprised to see that the musicians were reading music. I asked Dot about it and was told that the music for the Shaggs was written out.

The Modern Lovers — The Modern Lovers

In 1974 I read an interview of Jonathan Richman in Andy Warhol’s Interview magazine. I was impressed with what Jonathan had to say. When the Modern Lovers album was released I sent away for it and was floored by it. It’s a super fine album.

Spider John Koerner — Some American Folk Songs Like They Used To

Spider John Koerner is one of my favorite folk musicians. It’s a shame that very few people have heard the album. I think it’s his best.

Lord Invader — Calypso Travels

I’m a huge fan of calypso music. Lord Invader is a great calypsonian. I love the way he sings and his band is top of the top.

The Stooges — Fun House

I grew up in Michigan and when I was a teen, most of my favorite bands were from Michigan. Michigan had The MC5, The Stooges, Question Mark and the Mysterians, Destroy All Monsters and Motown. I felt I was living in the best state for music.

Daniel Johnston — Hi How Are You?

In 1984 my band Half Japanese had a tour with a stop in Austin. Daniel’s manager (Jeff Tartakov) gave me a cassette of Daniel’s album. During the tour we played it over and over in the van. I know many amazing musicians. What’s rare is a musician that is also a fine lyricist. Daniel was one of the best. He was a genius, and I was so lucky to have worked with him.

Bob Dylan — Basement Tapes

I like the relaxed feel of the songs. Bob Dylan and the Band were such a great match. Super fine songs and super playing.

Howlin Wolf — The Complete RPM and Chess Singles

In the early 1970s, I bought a lot of albums of Howling Wolf. It’s hard to beat Howling Wolf as a performer. He had power and charisma.

NRBQ — All Hopped Up

NRBQ is my favorite band. When I lived on the East Coast I would go to see them anytime they had a show in Maryland or DC. Definitely the finest live band I’ve seen.

James Brown — Live At The Apollo

It’s hard to pick just one James Brown album. He released so many great albums. Live At The Apollo has James in top form. It’s a brilliant performance. It’s star time!

BTS’ Suga on going solo, his love of hip-hop and the band’s future:

‘We’re real brothers, period’

“If I do well, that’s good,” says Suga. “If my family members do well, that’s even better.”

However you look at the current purgatory for K-pop superstars BTS — a long-expected pause for military service, a renewed focus on solo careers or an existential crisis for the genre — there are significant stakes not just for the group, but for the global music industry. While the seven members of the most successful act in South Korean history take turns, based on their respective birthdates, performing mandatory 18-month turns in the military — Jin and J-Hope are currently serving — those not yet conscripted have the chance to reestablish themselves as solo acts, after six chart-topping Billboard albums and six No. 1 Hot 100 singles. For the band’s label, Hybe, in the midst of a global acquisition spree, billions of dollars are potentially on the line. Bang Si-hyuk, Hybe chairman, recently stated that there is no set date for BTS’ comeback as a group, though he hopes they can return in 2025. Before beginning his military term later this year, group member Suga is touring U.S. arenas on the back of his solo debut album, “D-Day,” performed under the alias Agust D (he has two other mixtapes as Agust D). The dark, smoldering rap album debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200.

This week, Suga will perform three sold-out shows at Inglewood’s Kia Forum, on May 10, 11 and 14. However, he swears, he’s not competitive about it with his bandmates. “Are you competitive with your family members? Do you get jealous if your brother or your sister does well?” he asked with a laugh during a Zoom interview (Suga spoke through a Korean translator). “We’re real brothers, period. If I do well, that’s good. If my family members do well, that’s even better.”

Suga’s Agust D alias has long turned heads within the BTS solo-project sphere. Sometimes, those heads nearly get decapitated via giant ritual temple sword, as in his 2020 video for the rowdy “Daechwita.” Other times, they get stabbed right through with a pair of chopsticks, as Suga does himself in the deliciously grisly, “Oldboy”-worthy video for the new single “Haegeum.” It’s tough to square this genuinely transgressive solo artist with the snazzy-suited, fleet-footed heartthrob harmonizing on a Hot 100 hit like “Butter.” Devoted BTS Army fans know that Suga has an underground streak from his pre-BTS days, cribbing production notes from pioneering Korean rap acts like Epik High.

“Some bright and cheerful songs go into BTS,” he said. “But I’ve been doing music without any filter all the time, so I wouldn’t differentiate between Agust D or Suga, because all those are all me.” Still, “D-Day” is a standout, and not just for the sub-shaking production and gory videos. “Haegeum” is lacerating about modern life in South Korea: “Maybe we do it to ourselves/ Slaves to capitalism, slaves to money / Slaves to hatred and prejudice/ Slaves to YouTube, slaves to flexin’.” – Then he turns his blade on the internet culture that fascinates and destroys young people “Endless influx of information prohibits freedom of imagination / And seeks conformity of thought / All these painful noises blind you.”

“We’re living a life that’s better than ever before,” Suga said. “Some say we all live better lives than the king hundreds of years ago. But everything we worry about is coming too fast. Everyone’s lonely without having a sense of belonging, we can’t relate to the things that our parents have experienced, like being obsessed with accomplishments. Nobody feels a sense of belonging.”

Suga’s not immune from self-criticism, either. On “People Pt. 2,” with K-pop R&B singer IU, he sorts out his wariness around intimacy. “Selflessness can actually be selfish too, it’s true / It’s actually my greed when I say that it’s all for you.” – “This thing called love … it’s conditional,” he sings. “Wasn’t loved enough as a kid, that’s why I’m the cautious type.” Suga, born Min Yoon-gi, famously broke down in tears after seeing his formerly reluctant parents attend a BTS show in 2016. What did they make of that song?

“I don’t actually let my parents listen to my music before it’s released because there’s so many swear words,” Suga answered with a laugh. “My parents only listen to BTS songs. Things are good with us.”

On one hand, being in a globally famous act means any slip-up could be perilous. On the other, BTS-size stardom and a reputation for real artistry allow for uncommon candor, said Sang Cho, co-founder of the L.A.-based K-pop distribution and event firm KAI Media. “Suga and RM are to BTS what Lennon and McCartney were to the Beatles. Every member is talented, but these two are definitely the driving force behind their music,” Cho said. “I think Suga is a bit more Lennon — more explicit in his anti-establishment sensibilities. ‘Haegeum’ is a double entendre of a traditional Korean string instrument and wordplay on ‘liberation from restrictions.’”

“D-Day” also reflects on the music that helped Suga become a serious artist. His track “Snooze” was one of the late Japanese composer Ryuichi Sakamoto’s last collaborations, an artful yet stern track that brought Suga back to his teenage days learning to sample. “I’m not really good at piano, but I remember playing ‘Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence’ all day when I was young,” Suga said. “It’s impossible not to be influenced by him if you’re born in Korea. When I was young, I needed instrumentals without voice to sample, so I reversed and chopped his music. I am very grateful I can call him a mentor even though I only met him once.”

While Suga is playfully cynical about accolades like Grammy Awards — “Isn’t that a local thing?” he joked, echoing South Korean director Bong Joon-ho’s quip about the Oscars — he has nuanced thoughts about his place in hip-hop. “I did have that differentiation when I was younger. I hoped that [rap fans] would approve of my music,” he said. “But I have this very firm belief that if I go to a hip-hop concert, where there’ll be only hip-hop fans, well, BTS fans are hip-hop fans too. I’m a huge fan of hip-hop, but what’s important here is that it’s not empty words to do music for the people that have sent you love and support.” – As the members of BTS sort out these years in transition, they’re still in one another’s lives. BTS’ Jimin debuted atop the Hot 100 with “Like Crazy” in March. Suga can’t wait to be in the crowd cheering for his bandmates when their times come.

“If you live for 13 years in one house under the same roof 24/7, you become a family,” Suga said. “A lot of people think that the relationships between K-pop band members are kind of fake, but that’s not true. For me, it’s more like, ‘Oh, Jimin, hi! You made it to the Hot 100, I’m so proud of you!’”

Triple J: Arctic Monkeys' Alex Turner talks Lego, videogames, and new album The Car

It only takes one test drive of The Car – Arctic Monkeys’ first new album in four years – to hear that it picks up right where the subversive, slower sound of Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino left off.

Characterised by lush string orchestrations and spacious production, it's an album designed for luxuriating in rather than stomping along to.

Fans shouldn’t have anticipated otherwise. A full six months before The Car’s release, drummer Matt Helders managed expectations, saying:

"I mean, it’s never gonna be like ‘R U Mine?’ and all that stuff again, you know like, the heavy riffs and stuff."

And with one quote, a stake was driven through the hopeful heart of Arctic Monkeys fans wishing for a return to the hooky, leather-jacketed rock of AM (voted by triple j listeners as the best album of 2013). But then again, it was a pretty naïve position to assume they would.

Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino was - and even more so with the benefit of hindsight - a transitional record. It might have felt like whiplash transitioning from AM’s burly, horny riffs to a sci-fi obsessed lounge act but it was a pretty clear statement of artistic intent that Arctic Monkeys would no longer be repeating themselves.

“I don’t think it’s as easy to get back there as perhaps it seems like it is. That’s what I’ve found,” frontman Alex Turner tells triple j.

“Every time I’ve sort of thought about attempting to go in a direction that you’ve been before, it sort of feels – quite quickly – sounds like a spoof or something. I think we’ve always just been following the same instincts we were in the beginning. That hasn’t really changed.”

Quizzed about what he might retort to fans taken back by their shift in direction, unwilling to follow the band on their artistic journey, he replies candidly – with thoughtful pauses between: “I guess there aren’t really the riffs that there once were in any of this new stuff. But there’s a bunch of guitar on there… No is probably the answer. No, it won’t bring them back,” he chuckles. “I was skirting around it there.”

At its best, The Car drifts along on sultry, retro arrangements that accompany Alex Turner’s aching croon and newly refined falsetto, swooning on ‘Perfect Sense’ and peacocking in ‘I Ain’t Quite Where I Think I Am’.

For what it’s worth, the climax of ‘Body Paint’ and the bouncing ‘Hello You’ put a little more pulse and vitality into the band’s performances but overall, the album is moody, melancholy and treads the line between soft and sleepy a little too dangerously at times.

Critics of the Monkeys’ shift to a smokier, stranger sound on TBH&C won’t find much more to love about The Car. Those that embraced it, will.

As Turner points out, those older records are always there to be pressed play on. And they’re still a huge part of their world class live show – Arctic Monkeys will be back on our shores to prove it, headlining East Coast shows and a bunch of festivals.

It’s clear that the teenage scribe who came up with poetic ways of describing lust - in tunes like ‘505’, ‘Do I Wanna Know?’ and ‘Suck It And See’ – is long gone.

Turner’s songwriting is one of the most unique evolutions in the realms of Big Rock Bands that graduated from the 2000s indie sleaze era.

Once famed for the sharply drawn suburban settings and memorable characters that filled his songs, he’s progressed into a dapper-suited, Scott Walker/Serge Gainsbourg-obsessed lounge lizard singing surreal ‘70s-styled spy movie ballads.

Another pre-album quote that defined The Car’s introduction saw Turner promising that “on this record, sci-fi is off the table. We are back to Earth.”

What that really equates to is more cryptic lyrical ruminations that drift ambiguously between autobiography and fiction, and whose meanings only really make sense to the musician who penned them.

His biting lyrical wit still surfaces – the line ‘puncturing your bubble of reliability with your horrible new sound’ (from 'Scultptures of Anything Goes') is easy to interpret as a cheeky moment of self-awareness – but largely, he’s weaving velvety verses out of real mouthfuls.

‘For a master of deception and subterfuge, you’ve made yourself quite the bed to lie in. Do your time travelling through the tanning booth, so you don’t let the sun catch you crying’ goes ‘Body Paint’.

‘And if we guess who I’m pretending to be/ Do we win a prize? Having attempted twice, both incorrectly / Do we get a third try?’ goes ‘Mr. Schwartz.

There’s also a big throughline fixation with show business. There’s references to cinema, film crews and techniques, musical theatre, orchestras, composition, and 'performing in Spanish on Italian TV'.

In the opening of ‘Hello You’, Turner sings: ‘Lego Napoleon movie written in noble gas-filled glass tubes/Underlined in sparks/I’ll admit it’s elaborate for a wakin’ thought’

So… what’s going on there?

“Yeah, what is that all about!?’ Turner jokes.

“Well, I suppose it’s a lyric sort of about having ideas is what’s going on there,” he explains.

“I remember reading about [director Stanley] Kubrick was going to make a Napoleon movie, maybe they had a script for it already. I was daydreaming one day and was imagining the Lego Batman people getting hold of that script and surprising everybody.”

When the conversation turns to the ever-popular series of Lego videogames, Turner notes:

“You know what, man. I haven’t played a videogame for about… I’m going to say 12 years. I got really into the last one I was playing, then just had to take a step back.” The game? Metal Gear Solid, the iconic series from auteur (and Monkeys fan) Hideo Kojima, famed for their elaborate espionage plots and immersive cinematics as much as their stealth action.

It’s James Bond as imagined by an artsy, anxious mind preoccupied with nuclear conspiracy theories and flaunting genetic destiny, with a tendency to (scarily) predict future world events.

“Wow, I didn’t think we were going Metal Gear Solid in this interview,” he laughs. “I’m going to be sorry I said that now.”

He can’t remember specifically what pulled him away from the controller but “thought I’d better make some records or something.”

The young singer-guitarist who came to fame betting that you looked good on the dancefloor may have grown up, but the spectre of teenage Turner – the scrappy Sheffield lad who made it big on MySpace with his indie rock tales of naughtiness – still haunts the adult Turner.

“He’s been cropping up a few times today, 19-year-old Alex. I’ve been time travelling all day long doing some interviews today,” says the frontman.

And what advice might the world-wise 36-year-old, seven albums deep into his career, give his younger self? “Well, whatever I could think of, I’d imagine it would fall on deaf ears.”

The volume might’ve been turned down from Arctic Monkeys’ electric introduction nearly 20 years ago, but the spirit of challenging themselves remains.

Whatever people say Alex Turner is. That’s what he’s not.

Mathew Baynton: ‘I’ve never done any Shakespeare – although I’ve played the man himself’

Best known as part of the troupe behind hit TV series Horrible Histories and Ghosts, Mathew Baynton tells Fergus Morgan about returning to the stage – in the RSC’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream – and how his Bottom will be sweet and sincere

Actor and writer Mathew Baynton will be familiar to most from his screen roles – as Deano in Gavin and Stacey, Simon in Peep Show and as lovelorn 19th-century poet Thomas Thorne in BBC One’s much-loved and recently concluded sitcom Ghosts. In fact, television has taken up most of Baynton’s time lately. When he steps on stage as Bottom in the Royal Shakespeare Company’s new production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream later this month, it will be his first theatrical role in more than a decade.

“I never made a conscious decision to do less theatre,” Baynton says. “There has been stuff that never worked out, some near misses that didn’t happen and it ended up being 10 years. I love Shakespeare but I’ve never had the chance to do any, although I’ve played the man himself a couple of times. I have had that Uncle Monty realisation from Withnail and I that I will never play Romeo or Hamlet, but there are loads of great Shakespeare roles that I want to do, such as this one.”

Born in 1980, Baynton grew up in Southend-on-Sea. He was “comedy obsessed” as a child – “I used to have everything from Blackadder to French and Saunders on VHS,” he remembers – then became interested in the physical theatre comedy of troupes such as Peepolykus and Spymonkey. He completed a degree in directing at Rose Bruford College, then travelled to Paris to train at the prestigious Ecole Philippe Gaulier school.

In 2009, he collaborated with five other comedians – Simon Farnaby, Martha Howe-Douglas, Jim Howick, Laurence Rickard and Ben Willbond – on the CBBC sketch show Horrible Histories. The six of them subsequently formed the collective Them There, and went on to create the series Yonderland and Ghosts. Baynton also co-wrote the 2013 comedy The Wrong Mans with James Corden, and stars in recent blockbuster Wonka as a conniving chocolatier. He lives in London with his wife and children.

“Every influence I’ve ever had is in there somewhere,” Baynton says, when asked about his approach to comedy. “In some ways, though, the older I get, the more I think that being funny is almost innate. It feels like a rarer quality than any other. It is hard to teach someone who has no funny bones to be funny. Ultimately, I just like collaborating in a room with like-minded people, trying to make stuff funnier and better. It feels natural to me. It feels not dissimilar to playing in a band.”

What production made you fall in love with theatre?

I had a wonderful theatre studies teacher called Mr Valencia, who borrowed the school minibus and drove us into London to see shows. He took us to some absolute crackers. One that stands out in particular is Complicité’s The Street of Crocodiles. That blew my mind.

What are you finding inspiring at the moment?

I’m an avid consumer of all kinds of art. I like discovering new things. I don’t get to the theatre as much as I’d like to, though. The most amazing show I saw recently was Accidental Death of an Anarchist starring Daniel Rigby and written by Tom Basden. That was completely inspiring.

What do you wish you could change about the performing arts industry?

Firstly, tickets are way too expensive. Secondly, access to our industries is really difficult. We lose an awful lot of voices that would enrich our industry because they can’t afford a career in the arts.

What is the worst thing that has happened to you on stage?

I can’t think of anything off the top of my head. On television, you can corpse and do another take. On stage, there is that hot panic when you realise you can’t hold on. I don’t think it will matter too much if that happens in A Midsummer Night’s Dream. It would be different if I was playing Macbeth.

What is the best thing that has happened to you on stage?

I’m lucky that I have been able to work with some of my heroes. To pick a recent example, on the first day of shooting for Wonka, I was in a green room at St Paul’s Cathedral with Rowan Atkinson. I was sat there with Blackadder. That was a pinch-me moment.

What role do you really want to play?

There are loads. I’m hungry to do lots of stuff, not just comedy. I’d love to play Malvolio one day. I was asked this question on the red carpet for Wonka, and I said that I would love to play Jack Skellington if they ever did a stage adaptation of the Tim Burton film The Nightmare Before Christmas.

What projects are you involved in at the moment?

I’m playing Bottom with the Royal Shakespeare Company until the end of March. My Bottom does have some similarities to Thomas in Ghosts. I look a lot like him, I suppose, and I’m playing him with sincerity, too. Bottom is just really, really keen on putting on a show and there is something sweet and interesting about that.

Henny ranks Eurovision 2023 - before the show

i’m kinda late with this this year, i admit. reasons? I guess I can say i’ve been busy, but it’s not all, truth is i’m not that engaged about this year actually... of course there are songs i love, but it’s not a year where i struggle to make a top 10 you know? anyway. enough negativity. let’s take a look, shall we? oh and please not that the songs are not in a certain order within each category.

category: can’t we have two winners please?

Sweden - yeah i’m in my patriotic era again. this is euphoria chapter two, in a good way, and it’d be so cool if she won purely from a statistic point of view... howEVER........

Finland - wouldn’t it just be great with a winner that was... a little rough around the edges? dirty, gritty, would scare your grandma only to later make her nod and say it’s quite a bop afterall? and it’d be the proper reward for finland who has brought their absolut a-game to their national final for the past few years - even though they’ve in my opinion picked the wrong winner from it. until this year that is. yeah, i think i’d like that.

Norway - mgp really stepped up their game as well this year and sometimes i even question if queen of kings is my winner from it (there’s tresko, ekko inni meg, love you in a dream etc etc) but my god it just goes so hard doesn’t it? although WHEN are they putting the version with the intro on spotify?? Czechia - go ladies go!! i really hope this will be as epic on stage as in the mv. please please please

Malta - this is a sort of recent obsession, i didn’t really get it right after the nf, so we’ll see how long this lasts but i’m always having fun listening to it
