Kaveh knew you weren’t ever leaving his side when you accidentally packed along his hairbrush instead of yours on your trip.
It was a small thing—a trivial thing—something that he might not have thought about if it had happened with anyone else. Mistakes happen, and can be forgiven. He knew that much, and he knew that once you realized it you would forget the second part. He knew how you got about that kind of thing.
He also knew that you had not ever made this kind of mistake around him. You had never assumed his comfort with you, or allowed yourself to fully relax as a guest in his house. You’d always been strange, even after years of knowing each other. Even after nights spent together. Even after tears shed, adventures taken, and stories written together.
In the drawer of his bathroom counter, there your hairbrush was next to where his usually was. You had taken to storing yours next to his when you stayed at his place, after he insisted it would be more convenient for you. A little too convenient, it seemed—a flurry of stressful packing had caused you to take the wrong one with you.
The wrong one, but somehow the right one all the same.
You knew he loved you. He knew you loved him. But there had always been an unspoken fear that the building of memories with each other would be a finite pursuit—that you might be drawn away from each other just as Kaveh’s many dreams, mora, and loved ones had so frequently been throughout his life. Hell, besides Alhaitham, Kaveh had never had a friend like you. But now, he thought... maybe there didn't have to be an end. This thing between you—it felt real, now. Real as the hairbrush in his bathroom drawer.
Kaveh closed the drawer, smiling at himself in the mirror. He imagined what your reaction would be when you reailzed what had happened—and imagined precisely what he would be saying to you when you got back.
“Not to worry, dearest. You can borrow any of my things as you like. Just don’t forget to bring yourself home with them.”
