in the grand scheme of things, merlin casually sparing Uther’s life only for Arthur’s sake is so insane and the most beautiful thing that happened on this show at the same time. I can feel the gods of the old religion screeching somewhere offscreen. like they've had all their literal hopes and dreams hanging on this boy who's magic itself to bring back the practice of magic freely and then he falls for the idiot he's supposed to protect and in the process wrecks everything just to spare him from pain. it's a poetic disaster.
