Depression, Coping Methods, and Genos
Right now, I feel like that one gif of Pedro Pascal laughing and then beginning to sob hysterically. Life is kicking my ass.
But speaking of depression, I wanted to do a little thinking about Genos, and his story.
His life has been pretty dark so far. Losing his childhood to the rampaging cyborg, becoming a cyborg himself.
But these aren't really the only big things that have happened to him. They're just the only events he's realized have had an effect on him.
Since then, he's become very closely involved with a man who has trouble reciprocating those emotions. He's been torn apart and rebuilt numerous times, losing bits of his humanity each times as he becomes more and more of a high tech murder machine.
His strength continues to fail him when he needs it most, meanwhile Saitama's time and attention becomes more and more divided on people he hardly sees as worthy of those things. Worst of all, no one seems to understand him, his goals, or his devotion to Saitama. He's often laughed off and ignored by people who are meant to be his peers, and even Saitama has no real interest in Genos' long winded stories.
That brings us around to his coping methods, one of the more prominent of which is his habit of long winded explanations of topics he finds important. His journey to Saitama, Saitama's time travel endeavor, etc. Aside from that, we have his obligatory journaling, his insistence on having a goal to work towards at any given time, and dependence on being able to respond to any given scenario with the calculated and emotionless precision of a machine.
That last one is arguably the most important, because of how it influences the above. Saitama is a very closed off person, and he expects Genos to respect that- which he does!
To his own detriment.
Genos is completely fine with their terms of agreement, but his overly compliant nature means his needs are ultimately ignored. The methods he's developed to express himself and interact with the world in a way that is comfortable for him are seen as nuisances in Saitama's lifestyle.
Ultimately, none of this seems to have much effect on Genos. At least, not in a traditional manner.
But Genos is not traditional, is he? And depression and anxiety can manifest in many forms.
I would argue that Genos' entire relationship with Saitama is one of the few visible effects of the internal havoc at play.
He seeks refuge and guidance under Saitama as an extension of his need to become strong enough to avenge his village. This leads to him suppressing his habits to conform. The problem is that he isn't Saitama, not even close. This is kind of where we see a devolution of Genos' ability to cope, as he descends into a manic state of endless self destructive behavior, enabled by Saitama's baseless encouragement and Kuseno's ability to fix whatever breaks.
Saitama is not a mentally healthy individual. As a result, any attempt to follow in his footsteps is not going to craft a mentally healthy individual. The problem is that both of these two are emotionally constipated. Saitama has lost connection with his emotions and had little desire to reconnect, and Genos works to shed all proof of his humanity.
We've already seen the end result of Saitama reaching his breaking point. I shudder to think of what will happen when Genos inevitably reaches his.
I feel like there's more to say, but this is getting long winded, and my brain is fried. If anybody has any additions or corrections to make though, I'd love to continue this line of thought, and maybe examine some other characters, since everyone in ONE'S work is mentally unstable in some way.
Thanks for reading!

Started watching Mob Psycho 100. About 5 episodes in and yeah, I get why this show is so popular. It's good, even real good, so far. Mob is a good protagonist and the animation has been really impressive.
I also recently started reading One Punch Man and it's fine. I like the art and every now and again it gives me a chuckle. But ultimately I think OPM has a fairly conservative world view that makes me hard to enjoy it as anything more than easy fluff. It's all about the power of the individual and has some really questionable class politics in places. I know it's not intended for a deep read, but I can't help it. I'm glad I'm reading it through the library instead of buying individual volumes. I think I'm like 21 volumes into it.
Back to MP100, I'm still early so I can't say for sure yet, but I feel like it is the better written and realized of the two. I'm a sucker for the monster-of-the-week style format and so far it has been nailing while also developing the characters pretty well.
I gotta say, I'm impressed. I'm usually pretty cautious around checking out popular things since I tend to not enjoy them. So far that's not the case here.
First, I'm glad that your library has a lot of the OPM volumes: it's great for the series and a very wise way to read. If I didn't have my library cards, I'd be perma-broke and out of space in my home. :D
Second, I hope by now that you've finished reading Mob Psycho 100. I think it's a fantastic work and while there's a part of me that hankers for ONE to find something more he wants to say in that world and tell another story, a bigger part of me really respects that he's known how to tell 'a big story of a small step' and end there. It is one of the best coming-of-age stories I've read or watched. If you haven't checked out the anime, DO! It is incredibly well-realised, imaginative, and every season builds better on the previous.
Yes, now that you mention it, One-Punch Man does feel more conservative than Mob Psycho 100 in *some* ways. Whereas the latter is about middle schoolers exploring how to shape themselves, OPM is about the challenge of having a sense of purpose as an adult and balancing act of being an individual and being part of society. And no one quite knows what they're doing...
The various kids in MP100 may have challenges as small as getting someone to sign up for a school club or as big as stopping a would-be megalomaniac from taking over Japan, but they're free to focus on those problems. Their parents keep a roof over their heads, cook dinner, draw up budgets, pay bills, and prompt them to do homework. Their schools give them a ready-made social context in which to interact repeatedly and shape their goals. They're free to be children and it's precious.
OPM, almost everyone is an adult, and adult life is both less and more structured than that of childhood. There's a lot more to balance, you don't have infinite energy, time, or resources, and if you get it wrong, life gets super hard. We get Saitama: he's become the strongest man in the world thanks to his singular focus on being so strong that he can send any enemy flying with a single punch -- and he's also homeless (he's squatting in an abandoned apartment), with no post-secondary qualifications, no steady job (he's held lots of menial jobs, keeping them only long enough to quit and live off them so he can be a hero). The idealism of being a hero may get you thanked, but thanks don't pay the rent: that's why the Hero Association came to exist, in order to enable people motivated to be heroes to actually focus on it. It'd be a short story if Genos hadn't introduced Saitama to the HA.
Those checks and compromises necessary to survive and thrive in society do give OPM a more conservative feel. However, on the other side, there's no one telling you how far you can go. Difficult as it is, there's more scope for self-actualisation for the characters in OPM than there is for those in MP100. And there's no one way to do it. Swings and roundabouts.
Not sure how OPM will end yet, but so far, I'm still finding it compelling.
Given how long this has been in my inbox, I have no idea if you will read this. If you do (and I hope you do), thank you. Thank you for an awesome ask.

Guess who's back from the dead (again)? :D
I'm ngl, this time I dont really have an excuse. I just started finding more ships to fixate on, and I did, and I haven't let go just yet. Also, I'm back in school now, and it's already been kicking my ass so I haven't really had time to brainrot anything I like for a good while. Or at least not enough to make something out of it.
And, I'm going to be honest, it's hard for me to keep running a blog that focuses on one fandom/ship. Sometimes, my mind will drift into wanting to share ideas and content about other things, but because my blog would be centered around another fandom, I don't post. Then I feel bad for not posting because I know people enjoy my content, and I'm not in the space to make some.
That isn't to say I'm out of the OPM fandom or anything, I just want to give myself the freedom of doing whatever on my blog
So, as of now, imma just post about whatever comes to mind. I'll do some catching up on the asks/prompts in my inbox (which, I'm so sorry for those waiting for a response for those 😭), then move on.
Also, so people who follow me for specific fandom content don't get disappointed when I post something else, I'll make a new pinned for the fandoms I'm currently in, and each post will have that symbol at the very top :]
It's nice to be back on tumblr

Excluding foreign bands, who are her favorite opm bands? You can name ones from the 90s, which I assumed was her rock phase based off how many bands sky rocketed during that time.
Honestly the easiest way I can answer this is 'who isn't' because music is such a big part of Filipino culture, and I like to imagine Philippines specifically to be the type of person who likes whatever she vibes to. That said, I'll try to list a few possible favorites I can think of, based on what bands I think are 'iconic' in the local music scene and what I think she'd vibe most with and what bands I'm familiar with HFDJF
And we can go back further-- after all, OPM is more than just rock, and the term was coined way back the seventies to refer to Manila sound. As awful of a decade it was, music was one of its highlights, and both Hotdog and APO Hiking Society are honestly too iconic not to talk about in terms of the history of OPM. There's also ASIN, for something much more classically folk rock. And of course, branching off from the typical Manila sound, you could argue Pinoy rock had its start here with the Juan dela Cruz Band.
That said, her rock phase definitely came in the nineties! I think if we're going to talk about her absolute favorite rock band, it's definitely going to be Eraserheads, though Parokya ni Edgar is also up there in terms of iconic faves. There's also Rivermaya and Aegis, to name a few more. And rock wasn't the only thing playing on the radio-- there's Prettier than Pink, Smokey Mountain, and for the hugot karaoke moments, Side A.
And once we reach the 2000s, man. Orange and Lemons, Urbandub, Up Dharma Down (now UDD), The Itchyworms, Imago, Moonstar88, Silent Sanctuary, Kamikazee-- I could go on. There were so many good iconic bands during this period that I definitely encourage everyone to look through, because the bigger question at this point is what wouldn't she have vibed with.
And while the 2010s to today came to be dominated with the Hallyu wave, the local indie scene also rose to prominence around this time! I can't talk about this decade without mentioning Ben&Ben and IV of Spades, but I'd also like to mention Tanya Markova, Autotelic, SUD, Lola Amour, Magnus Haven, Nobita, and Munimuni. And there's definitely a lot more, way more than I know and am able to realistically be aware of, as the local music scene continues to grow and diversify.
Of course, with the influence of the Hallyu wave and J-pop idol groups come the creation of our own Filipino idol groups; technically not bands I suppose, but they are groups of people creating music together and do represent what's brewing in the local music scene and her Spotify playlist! Again I can't delve into this category without mentioning SB19, but some other P-pop groups to look at are Alamat, MNL48, and BINI.
And there's definitely more! I stuck to bands and groups when solo performers are also a big part of the local music scene, and I haven't even gotten into the local hip-hop and rap scene (but I'm less familiar with that area tbh) which is also a big part of modern Filipino music, but this isn't a history of Filipino music post so I hope these answers suffice in any case!

[Reigen meets his ex boyfriend, Feat. Saitama and Genos]
Reigen Arataka | Mob Psycho 100 One-Punch Man Cross-Over 04-01-2023
[#mp100  post-canon ish + #opm, awkward ex saitama/reigen meeting]
Where ???%/Shigeo chaos in the confession arc is classified as Disaster level Demon (bordering on Dragon if he's not stopped). And the ones on their way there are Genos and Saitama
But there's no need for them to really be there since once they arrive the problems as already been taken care of. "I wonder which hero managed to take care of this before we arrived" Genos ponders.
Saitama is about to complain about the fact he was missing some sale on veggies for nothing. A Second time that problems in this city seem to take care of themselves.
They are about to simply make their way home, Genos saying that maybe if they are quick enough they can still make it. Then they notice two people walking among the deserted and destroyed city. Genos decides to go and see, maybe they need assistance. As they approach he sees the way man seems in bad shape and the teenager had been crying. "Do you need help to join safety?" he asks, the teenager looking back at him surprised.
Mob is about to reply that his shisho would need some help, but he is interrupted when Reigen suddenly blurps out "Saitama?", with a surprised and dumbfounded look on his face.
Saitama looks back at the injured man, no emotion really showing on his face, until recognition suddenly bloom on his face. "Arataka?".
"You two know each other shisho/sensei?" Mob and Genos ask at the same time.
The air suddenly becomes awkward as Reigen lets out an just as awkward laugh, scratching at his head (which he winces at the action).
"Mob you may know the Hero Saitama? He's... my ex" he admits.
"It's been a while" Saitama offers to Reigen, which is true, they haven't seen each other in years.
"What?!" Genos and Mob suddenly react.
"Yeah it's been a while, I guess we were both too busy to meet up" Reigen says, "But I can see you are doing pretty good right now, finally became a Hero" he grinned.
"How's your business?" Saitama then wonders
"Sailing smoothly" Reigen grins, carefully throwing an arm around Mob's shoulder to bring him closer, "Even got a powerful student and employee" he added.
Mob doesn't miss the glance Genos gives him, as if trying to assess him.
"Happy to hear everything is going smoothly then"
"I didn't know sensei had an ex" Genos mentions, something in his voice sounding sour and dangerous, glaring at Reigen, making the man back off as Mob steps more in front of him, eyes not leaving the cyborg.
"If my calculation is correct, I think we still have a chance to get the sales if we go now" Genos mentions to Saitama.
This seems to catch Saitama's attention greatly, pully his phone out "No time to chat around then, but we could try and meet again later... if you want" Saitama suggest.
Reigen quickly accept as they exchange numbers again, making sure neither of them had changed theirs. Mob and Reigen wave at them as they rapidly get on their way for the sales, Reigen finally relaxing now that the perceived threat of Genos is gone.
"He hasn't changed" Reigen hums, "Still running after sales" he mentions when Mob looks back up at him, curious. Mob simply nods at this, unsure what to make of this strange encounter. Something in him is happy they somehow didn't figure out he was the one who caused this.
"Let's go now, Why don't we go get ramen after we find my shoes?" Reigen offered, arm thrown over Mob's shoulder once more for support, back on their previous path.
====
I dunno why I suddenly felt like writing some Saitama/Reigen ex meeting again. throwing some one-sided genosai into it, we have one jealous cyborg Although I'm sure mob would also be pushy if it was a bit later, when he maybe developed deeper feelings for shisho

Saitama’s power deconstruction part 1: Psyche and Divine powers The Ego, The ID and the Super-ego
Tumblr media
I know right? How is this even related to massive strenght? The planet busting powers and being impervious?
Buckle up and I will try my best to explain this wild theory I stumbled upon while doing research into how buddhism relates to OPM and then doing some leaps of logic and other stuff. I've no degree in psychology so bear with me on this, I just like doing analysis.
Again, lots of wikipedia abuse and you may want to read some of my previous posts as they relate to the research I've been doing on discord.
Does god reside in Saitama?
Saitama's hero suit
How saitama's power manifests
Warning, this is an extremely long post of both theory, OPM meta, speculation and lots of wikipedia abuse.
Preface, explaining the leaps of logic:
At first, I simply researched ways how would a willpower use manifest when he uses his emotions to seemingly fuel a Serious punch and how said fuel is then expended in stress relief, which I have explained on how Saitama's powers potentially manifest as emotional release.
In current chapter 167, we're seeing a lot of showcase about things that break laws of physics and break common sense. But he's completely dissocating as well and he's not actually punching with energy release. His punches are completely different from how he threw his planet busting punch. And seemingly weaker too.
I was also researching how to break one's limiter and realised that OPM God has no identity at all, because he is faceless and at the same time, multifaceted and takes on other identities.
Tumblr media
When Blast said that beings who manipulate the reality of the cosmos and that we got confirmation that Saitama's powers are of divine origin, I immediately thought about reality manipulation. But that would not explain the bursts of emotional discharges.
Tumblr media
If we believe Gyoro, one has to overload the body and spirit, multiple times.
According to Ventegodt and Merrick, the Jungian term "psychic death" is a synonym for "ego death":In order to radically improve global quality of life, it seems necessary to have a fundamental transformation of the psyche. Such a shift in personality has been labeled an "ego death" in Buddhism or a psychic death by Jung, because it implies a shift back to the existential position of the natural self, i.e., living the true purpose of life. The problem of healing and improving the global quality of life seems strongly connected to the unpleasantness of the ego-death experience.
In Jungian psychology, a unification of archetypal opposites has to be reached, during a process of conscious suffering, in which consciousness "dies" and resurrects. Jung called this process "the transcendent function", which leads to a "more inclusive and synthetic consciousness".
Ego death is a "complete loss of subjective self-identity". The term is used in various intertwined contexts, with related meanings. Jungian psychology uses the synonymous term psychic death, referring to a fundamental transformation of the psyche. In death and rebirth mythology, ego death is a phase of self-surrender and transition, as described by Joseph Campbell in his research on the mythology of the Hero's Journey. It is a recurrent theme in world mythology and is also used as a metaphor in some strands of contemporary western thinking.
A fundamental transformation of the psyche. Hm.
So what is psyche?
In psychology, the psyche /ˈsaɪki/ is the totality of the human mind, conscious and unconscious.[1] Many thinkers, including Carl Jung, also include in this definition the overlap and tension between the personal and the collective elements in man. The English word soul is sometimes used synonymously, especially in older texts.
(Haha funny, that OPM writer also writes Mob Psycho haha)
So human mind, conscious and unconscious.
Human mind is probably Saitama's insane willpower. The non-defeatist attitude of his. Never accept defeat, never quit. But I legit haven't thought about the human mind relation with his powers. It may be normal and intact.
Tumblr media
But we already know this don't we? What about the rest? (also this scene is so frikken funny to me lmao)
Sigmund Freud, the father of psychoanalysis, believed that the psyche—he used the word Seele ('soul', but also 'psyche') throughout his writings—was composed of three components:
The id, which represents the instinctual drives of an individual and remains largely unconscious. It does not respect the rules of society.
The super-ego, which represents a person's conscience and their internalization of societal norms and morality.
The ego, which is conscious and serves to integrate the drives of the id with the prohibitions of the super-ego. Freud believed this conflict to be at the heart of neurosis.
Now we've hit the meaty part of it. Saitama's divine powers and how he can control the conscious and unconscious mind. Supposedly.
The Ego, The ID and the Super-ego:
The id, ego, and super-ego are a set of three concepts in psychoanalytic theory describing distinct, interacting agents in the psychic apparatus (defined in Sigmund Freud's structural model of the psyche). The three agents are theoretical constructs that describe the activities and interactions of the mental life of a person. In the ego psychology model of the psyche, the id is the set of uncoordinated instinctual desires; the super-ego plays the critical and moralizing role; and the ego is the organized, realistic agent that mediates between the instinctual desires of the id and the critical super-ego.
ID:
The id is the instinctual component of personality that is present at birth, and is the source of bodily needs and wants, emotional impulses and desires, especially aggression and the libido (sex drive). The id acts according to the pleasure principle — the psychic force oriented to immediate gratification of impulse and desire — defined by the avoidance of pain. Freud said that the Id is unconscious, by definition.
The mind of a newborn child is regarded as completely "id-ridden", in the sense that it is a mass of instinctive drives and impulses, and needs immediate satisfaction. The "id" moves on to what organism needs. Example is reduction of tension which is experienced.
The id "knows no judgements of value: no good and evil, no morality. …Instinctual cathexes seeking discharge—that, in our view, is all there is in the id." It is regarded as "the great reservoir of libido", the instinctive drive to create—the life instincts that are crucial to pleasurable survival. Alongside the life instincts came the death instincts—the death drive which Freud articulated relatively late in his career in "the hypothesis of a death instinct, the task of which is to lead organic life back into the inanimate state." For Freud, "the death instinct would thus seem to express itself—though probably only in part—as an instinct of destruction directed against the external world and other organisms" through aggression. Freud considered that "the id, the whole person…originally includes all the instinctual impulses…the destructive instinct as well", as eros or the life instincts.
If those bolded parts sound familiar, they should. Avoidance of pain because Saitama doesn't seem to feel any real pain even if he gets hit.
Source of bodily needs and wants, because Saitama is so detatched from his emotions right now, he has no physiological needs. Despite acknowledging gravity when he jumped around the moon, now he gives two shits about gravity, air, temperature or anything.
Bodily wants because he can do whatever he wants to apparently with his body, like Table flip and jump at high speeds and everything he wills himself to do. Just general body enhancement ability so he can do Serious side hops. And lastly...
Tumblr media
Serious series, Serious Punch.
The "Death" punch.
"Instinct of destruction directed against the external world through aggression."
A very emotionally loaded aggressive Punch. That more than likely causes emotional catharsis via expulsion of emotional energy. Either via transference or cathexis.
Note that the ID is according to Freud, unconscious by definition. So in some levels, Saitama is not aware of the extremes of his Death punch when it's this emotionally loaded. Such as him feeling suddenly relaxed after unloading stress at Elder Centipede. Or when he's using his divine powers to load it with emotional energy, specifically. Because he is not thinking rationally anymore at this extreme level, it's all emotions, instincts where his higher cognitive thought processes get thrown out of the window. Head empty, just feeling the hot cognitive release of emotion.
Serious Punch is one thing. He's pounding Garou with Serious punches.
But they are without any emotion to discharge. The higher the emotion, the bigger the discharge. That makes them different. Makes sense. This is from the writer of Mob Psycho after all.
Normal punch is normal levels of aggressive emotion(nal damage). Serious Punch is serious levels of aggressive emotion, he feels like he needs to punch to kill. Death Punch is... more extreme levels of aggressive emotional discharge.
(I can't I'm just laughing at the Emotional Damage joke now xd)
Genos did ask for him to take him seriously and show him no mercy and not hold back... Well, he didn't hold back, Genos got a taste of Saitama's divine powers kekw.
Be careful what you wish for lmao. He didn't die, so that's something.
Tumblr media
But if Saitama has been doing hero work for 3 years and punching people, if he constantly discharges his emotional energy like this, does that mean it is the reason why he's been feeling his emotions waning?
Possibly. Likely. Might be related to the other parts of his powers. But if he experiences emotions and does not discharge them in anger or in other ways (hmmm? other ways?), he might be able to gain a sense of his waning emotions back. At least I hypothesise.
King is playing a very dangerous Game when he made Saitama pissed lmao. He's lucky Saitama moderates himself extremely well too and went out to punch a Centipede to literally vent. But then again, King is a true gamer.
Onto the other part of his power. The one which we saw him use in latest chapter 167.
Ego:
The ego (Latin for "I",[20] German: Ich)[21] acts according to the reality principle; i.e., it seeks to please the id's drive in realistic ways that, in the long term, bring benefit, rather than grief.[22] At the same time, Freud concedes that as the ego "attempts to mediate between id and reality, it is often obliged to cloak the (unconscious) commands of the id with its own preconscious rationalizations, to conceal the id's conflicts with reality, to profess…to be taking notice of reality even when the id has remained rigid and unyielding."[23] The reality principle that operates the ego is a regulating mechanism that enables the individual to delay gratifying immediate needs and function effectively in the real world. An example would be to resist the urge to grab other people's belongings, but instead to purchase those items. The ego is the organized part of the personality structure that includes defensive, perceptual, intellectual-cognitive, and executive functions. Conscious awareness resides in the ego, although not all of the operations of the ego are conscious. Originally, Freud used the word ego to mean a sense of self, but later revised it to mean a set of psychic functions such as judgment, tolerance, reality testing, control, planning, defense, synthesis of information, intellectual functioning, and memory.[25] The ego separates out what is real. It helps us to organize our thoughts and make sense of them and the world around us.[25] "The ego is that part of the id which has been modified by the direct influence of the external world. …The ego represents what may be called reason and common sense, in contrast to the id, which contains the passions…in its relation to the id it is like a tug of war, which the ego has to hold in check the id to not let it loose; with the difference, that the teams fought against one other in equality, while the ego was against the much stronger 'id'.
In Freudian psychology and psychoanalysis, the reality principle (German: Realitätsprinzip)[1] is the ability of the mind to assess the reality of the external world, and to act upon it accordingly,[2] as opposed to acting on the pleasure principle.
Allowing the individual to defer (put off) instant gratification, the reality principle is the governing principle of the actions taken by the ego, after its slow development from a "pleasure-ego" into a "reality-ego":[3] it may be compared to the triumph of reason over passion, head over heart, rational over emotional mind, human values over animal instinct.
What we can glean from this is a set of psychic functions and that Ego represents reason and common sense. Common sense that Saitama is also currently breaking.
Judgment Tolerance Reality testing Control Planning Defense Synthesis of information Intellectual functioning Memory From another source of Ego psychology, we have: Reality testing Impulse control Affect regulation Judgment Object relations Thought processes Defensive functioning Synthesis
Yea, honestly sounds about right when you think about it.
Note here, that ID aka those governing emotions, instincts and bodily functions are on the unconscious level.
While Ego functions are done mostly on the conscious level.
But anything that Saitama does when in an emotional state can be unconscious action, by definition. And everything done while apathetic and not beholden by ID and only driven by the Ego, is a intellectual-cognitive and executive function. But some actions of the ego or id can still be done consciously or subconsciously.
Currently in chapter 167, Saitama is dissociating from his emotions really hard. So he is not overwhelmed by his own feelings about Genos' death. May or may not be unconscious ability that he regulates his emotions. But lack of emotions makes it more difficult for him to connect with his ID. Reality principle is the governing principle of the actions taken by the ego.
So by either forcing himself to not feel (subconscious defence mechanism) or through the massive discharge of emotions just before fighting Garou on I.O or both, the Ego has taken over the fight. The rational, intellectual-cognitive though processes.
Quite literally, as he performs a picture perfect right hook when his form is normally sloppy. He fights methodically, surgically, intelligently with little wasted movement. Even his dialogue choices seem to reflect his utter lack of passion for this battle.
In an Ego versus Ego battle. Where he is going to pound Garou's ego to the ground, figuratively and literally.
If that makes sense.
Now, the powers.
Judgement:
Saitama has a tendency to cast "judgement" on other people, which works as judging their Egoes that can cause a shift in their Ego. It sounds remarkably similar to the concept of "Gaze".
Tumblr media
Possibly he can induce the process for the search of the Ideal Ego in self. If he uses his divine power that is, possibly unconsciously via emotions. But it seems to be a battle of Egos, so to speak. Fubuki as Do-S states, has a strong ego herself, so she does not immediately yield. Neither does Garou.
Eye-contact is probably a requirement. Thus the gaze and pressure one can feel when he looks at people and exerts his divine power. Orochi who is another being who has broken their limits at least once, perceives this as The Third Eye. You could say that Saitama has clairvoyance of sorts.
Eyes are the window to your soul, a quote from William Shakespeare. Saitama stares into your soul, the spirit, the ego, the self-concept.
My personal headcanon from now on is that he can never Judge Genos because he cannot truly get eye contact, since he's a cyborg. But Genos on his own, is sincere and honest. He does not need to. Genos will find his ideal ego through normal means.
Tolerance:
Tolerance is a no brainer. He can tolerate just about anything that could kill a normal human being. Lava, space vacuum, freezing, laser beams, lack of air, radiation, you name it.
Tumblr media
The interesting note here is that he first needed an adjustment period and then sudden sense of relief. Unconscious mind at work again where his body functions adjust themselves. Or something like that.
It is said, however, that the ego seems to be more loyal to the id, preferring to gloss over the finer details of reality to minimize conflicts while pretending to have a regard for reality.
Reality testing:
Tumblr media
The Ego governs reason and common sense. Therefore, Saitama can break logic and break laws of physics and grab hyperspace portals. And probably also relation to how he can break the moon with 4 fingers. It's all kind of related. Currently in chapter 167, he's holding Genos core in his hand and imbuing it with his Divine power that test reality itself and break logic. Because it's tanking nukes and survived traveling to Jupiter.
The lack of common sense and rationality, the Ego, on the other hand, allowed him to interact with the spiritual plane, because he was pissed that he thought they were talking about his bald head lmfao.
Tumblr media
Control:
Yeap, just control. Not much to say about this one, but he controls his impulses and the applications of his power precisely as he wants. Despite his capabilities, he can just as easily smash the planet apart as he can snap chopsticks. Though maybe the tiniest bit of force application proves to be sometimes difficult, as well as humorous.
Control does seemingly slip at times when he gets emotional though. Like when he accidentally breaks King's gaming consoles.
Affect regulation:
The ability to modulate feelings without being overwhelmed. Saitama is normally pretty easygoing and stoic person, then he gets passionate quite often despite saying his emotions are waning. But he may be able to modulate his feelings unconsciously to protect his psyche from damage.
Planning:
Idk is planning hitting grocery store sales a superpower? Lol. But he is apparently planning his actions regularly, like when he surfed on the ship and then thought about jumping towards Garou. And the moon jump back.
Defensive functioning:
A defense is an unconscious attempt to protect the individual from some powerful, identity-threatening feeling. Initial defenses develop in infancy and involve the boundary between the self and the outer world; they are considered primitive defenses and include projection, denial, and splitting.
Not much more to say that Saitama is just impervious. He can take a hit.
Object relations:
The capacity for mutually satisfying relationship. The individual can perceive himself and others as whole objects with three dimensional qualities.
Possibly his ability to perceive others, like how he perceived Awakened Garou and could immediately tell something was off and he could hear the echo of God in the background.
Thought processes:
The ability to have logical, coherent, and abstract thoughts. In stressful situations, thought processes can become disorganized. The presence of chronic or severe problems in conceptual thinking is frequently associated with schizophrenia and manic episodes.
Keep calm, punch monster, move on.
Synthesis of information:
The synthetic function is the ego's capacity to organize and unify other functions within the personality. It enables the individual to think, feel, and act in a coherent manner. It includes the capacity to integrate potentially contradictory experiences, ideas, and feelings.
If one had all these powers, not being able to organize and unify it would get messy. I get it.
Intellectual functioning:
Idk he's still sane? Sounds like a power to me. That he's able to intellectually function despite being god level and doing irrational, logic defying feats. Or when he's chilling on the surface of the moon without seemingly any air.
Memory:
I get a feeling that he has repressed an important memory, like why he became a Hero in the first place that he mentions having forgotten, in an effort to protect his psyche from damage.
Let's face it, nearly dying and having ego-death to break the limit will prolly create some kind of trauma that one represses.
(To be continued on Part 2, the Super-ego and further)

🤡🤲 and 🛠️ for the emoji ask? (Feel free to swap out or skip any if they don’t vibe with you … I feel like I may have asked one of these before).
Have you asked me one of these before? Hm. I mean I've shared snippets of WIPs, but I'll try to pick a different one. Anyway thank you for the ask! These are fun.
---
🤡 What’s a line, scene, or exchange you’ve written that made you laugh?
It's tough to pick just one here, because I think I'm the funniest person ever and laugh at my own jokes like a dumbass. XD My funniest fic is How to Seduce Your Sensei in 7 Days, and while a few people have commented on specific lines they liked, I may have been the only person with a dark enough sense of humor to have laughed at this line in particular:
[Context: Genos is searching for advice on how to seduce Saitama, and has stumbled across the OPM universe's equivalent of Yahoo! Answers.]
User yakety-snax wrote: ‘Make him food! The quickest way to a man’s heart is through his stomach!’
That was not biologically accurate (the quickest way to a man’s heart was to break his sternum), but Genos understood what they meant.
---
🛠️ What tools/programs/apps do you use to write?
Google Docs, if I'm at home. I don't use it at the office, because I work for a government agency and technically everything I do online can be monitored. (I doubt our IT cares, but "why were you writing slash fic instead of finishing your inspection checklist" is a conversation I never want to have.) If I'm at the office and want to write, I scribble on scrap paper with a pen like a disgruntled 19th century novelist. Occasionally I will write on Google Docs on my phone, but that is not efficient.

🤲 Would you please share a snippet of a wip?
Sure! Let me just, um, try to find one I haven't already shared. Okay! This is from a WIP I have titled Outclassed, which was originally going to be for Day 7 of Atoia Week 2022, before the story got waaaay out of hand. (It's 10,000 words now because I have no control.) Background: It's a high school AU that mainly revolves around Kamikaze (the chemistry teacher) and Iaian (the new history teacher who he is crushing on). Most of the characters are teachers, but the few canon teenagers are students (and some of the younger kids like Zenko, Tareo, and Isamu are aged up slightly to be freshman). Anyway, here's a snippet featuring the Shitty Teen Squad being brats to Kamikaze. (Putting it under a cut so this post doesn't get too long, or in case people don't like Atomic Samurai/Iaian.)
“Oh hey Mr. K.”
“Badd. Garou. This is not your class.”
“Can we hang out here instead of bio?” asked Garou, who was lounging with one arm over the back of the desk.
“Sure, if you did the homework I assigned.”
“Psh. Of course we did.” Badd leaned back in the desk and put his feet up on the one in front of him. “Genos ‘s got it. The three of us did it as a team, ya know?”
Kamikaze pulled the desk from under his feet, causing Badd to lose his balance and nearly fall out of his chair. Garou snickered.
“You know, I’m having flashbacks to your sophomore year when Genos did all the work and you two—” He gestured between Badd and Garou. “–claimed it was a ‘team effort’.”
“It was!” Garou insisted.
“It was not,” Genos quietly countered, not even looking up from his notebook.
Kamikaze sighed. “Come on, you two. Bell’s about to ring. Get to your own class.” He hoisted his bag onto the front counter.
“Come on, man!” Badd protested. “You get to sit in on your boyfriend’s class all the time! Why can’t we hang out with our friend?”
Kamikaze froze. “My what.”
“Zenko says you sit in the back of Mr. Iaian’s class and stare at him dreamily,” he emphasized the last word in a ridiculous sing-song voice.
He and Garou broke out laughing. Even Genos was grinning.
Kamikaze stammered. He hoped he wasn’t blushing. He refused to let these punks get to him. “Get out. Of my classroom.”
Garou and Badd continued laughing, but they did acquiesce to his request and leave the room.
Kamikaze glanced back at Genos as he unpacked his bag onto the front counter.
“Why do you hang around those two idiots?” he asked.
“Every court needs its jesters,” the teen replied in monotone.
That might have been the best thing that Genos had ever said to him.

okay a few things on you’re recent post!
question 1: where did you get the information that ONE is racist and homophobic??? I’m just curious is all because I love ONE a lot, for even making OPM or Mob 100 a thing.
question 2: on the speed o’ sonic thing, are you sure you meant ONE, or Murata? Because the OG webcomic where ONE fully drew everything he never pay attention to THAT kind of detail. So every drawing you saw of speed o’ sound sonic in the manga or anywhere else was Murata I’m sure.
Good questions! I'll answer number 2 first - admittedly, it could be Murata. I've only recently heard about the whole Murata thing in the first place, so I'm not sure of the Murata-to-ONE ratio of being horny for Speed'o'Sound Sonic. That part of the post was mostly a light-hearted joke, anyhow.
Now for the first question:
While I DO believe ONE has - at the very least - depicted some less than savoury racial caricatures before, as a white person I don't feel very comfortable discussing it at length.
However! As a gay person I'm more than happy to tell you why I think he's homophobic. It's a pretty simple answer, really.
Tumblr media
This charming gentleman right here is Puri Puri Prisoner, one of the 'heroes' featured in One Punch Man, and the main crux in my argument towards ONE's homophobia.
Now let me make one thing clear: I am very, very tolerant of homophobic caricatures in media, especially in eastern/Asian media. Being from West Asia myself, I understand that many countries - including Japan - just don't have the same level of sensitivity towards a topic like this. Japan is a conservative culture and jokes aimed at the LGBT community do not carry the same weight as they do over in the more liberal west.
From Ouran Highschool Host Club to Black Butler to whathaveyou, I've consumed and enjoyed plenty of anime with depictions of LGBT characters that are less than flattering.
While I don't ENJOY homophobic jokes, I've always been able to see them as just that - jokes. Jabs at people (usually gay men, sometimes trans women) that came from a place of ignorance more so than a place of hatred. "Haha, isn't two men kissing funny?" "Haha that 'man' is wearing a dress, that's so wacky!".
...
Puri Puri Prisoner disgusted me every moment he was on screen, and made it nearly impossible for me to finish a show I was otherwise loving.
This is not a simple, light-hearted jab at something the author didn't understand or wasn't used to.
[TW: Homophobia, R*pe, P*dophilia.]
In case you need a reminder - Puri Puri Prisoner is a flamboyant, effeminate, flagrantly homosexual man. One of the jokes is that he's so buff and over-the-top manly, yet still "pretends" to be dainty and feminine, haha, isn't it so gross and weird, haha. That in itself is icky, but nothing I haven't seen before.
He is also a prisoner, because he "cannot stop sexually assaulting men". There are multiple jokes in canon about him assaulting or raping other male characters - including his fellow prison mates whom he refers to as 'his boys' and presumably regularly assaults. There's also implications that he's interested in young boys.
This isn't written by someone who doesn't understand the gay community and is poking fun at something confusing and new.
This is written by someone who understands damn well the stereotypes and insults that get hurled at gay men, and either believes them, or at the very least thinks that they're funny.
As I've said - I enjoyed OPM a lot. I enjoyed MP100 a lot. ONE is a fantastic writer.
But this character single handedly is the most vile, disgusting caricature I've ever witnessed. I don't believe this was an accident, and I don't believe it was because of ignorance or misinformation.
Whether ONE believes that gay men are pedophile rapists, or whether he thinks that saying so is a funny joke, I sincerely believe that that is enough to warrant calling someone a homophobe.

Asghkfd I knoow everyone is tired of this topic by now especially you but I just read what I think is all your posts about the Shed In the Woods Arc it really made deappreciate how the anime skimmed details I mean yeah last two eps were animated great but I really didn't catch any of what you pointed out until I read the manga and I actually agree with your be grateful for what you get philosophy but now there's millions of people who at this point haven't even experienced the same story
I am being extremely rambly and grammatically incorrect rn but I recently stopped reading LNs because they often had bad animes which cut and changed so much I couldn’t even talk about them with anime onlys bc we had experienced different stories at that point. I switched to manga anime to avoid that and I’ve only watched three (I’m slow) so far I just wanted to talk abt OPM not holding up even if you like all it’s versions because I really like reading your thoughts okay I’m done
Oh anon. :’3 You’ve gone through and read everything, omg I’m glad you enjoy and get something out of reading my thoughts/content!
I can understand what you’re saying about LN adaptations though, with them often getting cut and rearranged, so in comparison I’m glad many current adaptations based on mangas are usually quite faithful nowadays. Back in the mid/late 00s the trend was for either completely diverging anime-original endings (way different from the source material), or longass filler arcs just to pad things out until the manga caught up with more material to adapt. So whew, I’m glad it seems the more recent manga adaptations aren’t quite done like that anymore, including opm. So in that sense, I’m glad the anime’s version of the story we’re getting is still relatively the same. While yes, things have to be cut/condensed to fit the anime format (even s1 isn’t exempt from doing this), that’s the general rule of thumb for most animes anyway. It’s also why I usually prefer mangas in general, to both read at my own pace and get the most (usually, better) content out of it at once.
Concerning fans experiencing different parts of the story, that kinda comes with the territory of having it exist in 3 ways (anime, manga, webcomic), with each one progressing at different parts of the same timeline. Some fans may only choose to view one, and not know anything about the rest (which remains their prerogative). So yeah it can get hard to discuss spoilery/canon things when not everyone has the full picture yet (incomplete both story wise and character wise). But the other charm with that comes from seeing how their perceptions gradually change as more gets revealed to them in the format of their choosing. I think it’s fun to stay up to date with all 3, to catch similar things that ONE might put in them concurrently (which in the manga’s case, becomes even more context/foreshadowing for stuff that’ll be covered later in the webcomic). Plus with the manga expanding and adding more content compared to the webcomic, it makes the manga experience fresh and unknown even to webcomic readers.
The anime showing us even a condensed version of the manga makes the story accessible to more viewers, so in that sense YES I still certainly hope a s3 eventually gets made. As there’s many lingering parts of the story (especially the immediate followup after the EC fight) that I still really want to see animated/voiced. While yes, I would prefer to see it done in the highest quality it deserves, if the studio does not change, then hopefully we can get at least a more experienced director and better sound director (passionate animator jumpaoki still deserves to come back no matter what). So with that said, I’m still looking forward to whatever comes (including possible bluray changes), because the worst option would be if a s3 never gets made at all. :’)

I've read your post abt what makes one a monster in opm, and I'm a lil shaken bc in a lot of ways, Saitama is eerily similar. Indeed, a lot of strong people abandoned their humanity and monsterized in pusuit of greater power — Haragiri, Gouketsu, Bakuzan, and so on.
I think the reason why he isn't considered a monster despite all that is because he really clung unto his humanity while in the pursuit of strength. Still does. Really, every mundane thing Saitama does isn't really necessary for him to do — like he doesn't need to eat, sleep, seek entertainment, or even breathe. This guy can't even get poisoned. He's so powerful and busted he's not human at this point. But I think he does them bc it makes him feel human and keeps him sane.
It really makes me think — what makes a human, human in opm? Seeing Saitama as an example, is choosing to be human and subjecting oneself to human aspects is what makes one human?
Monsters are really interesting in OPM, aren't they? This ask we're not talking about the natural monsters, which, cruel as they can be to human beings, literally saved the Earth from human depredations... talk about a complex ecological relationship!
Anyway, onto ex-human monsters. In OPM, it's the case that just because your egg and sperm donors were members of Homo sapiens, you can't take your humanity for granted. To a certain extent, your humanity has to be earned. The scary thing is that humans turning into monsters turns out to be a recent thing. *What* has changed, I wonder.
Also, it's not as simple as being good. The horrible criminals in the Stink Slammer never turned into monsters (at least not until some of them grabbed monster cells from Nyan in the hopes of finally being able to make Puri Puri see how much he'd made them suffer) despite being really nasty pieces of work. And of course, the straight-living Amai Mask started turning into a monster despite his best efforts to resist it.
There are risk factors that Dr. Genus outlines, such as a strong desire to transform into something else, a deep dissatisfaction with themselves, inferiority complexes, obsessive habits, and similar issues. Those are true enough, but we know characters with several of those problems who haven't gone monster. I think that Bug God puts a claw tip on the most fundamental requirement to turn monster: separating oneself from humanity. When you stop being able to see your fellow person as a human being, that's when you start to transform. You don't need to grow horns or fangs to be a total monster.
The scariest part? It doesn't necessarily take a long time. Everyone has some darkness within them, darkness that if they lean fully into and let consume them will change them in no time. How close Phoenixman got to converting Child Emperor still gives me chills (oi, future animators, don't you dare elide over this!).
Tumblr media
Conversely, we've seen that it is impossible to turn a person into a monster against their will. Even monster cells only work if the person knowingly and willingly consumes them with the intention of becoming a monster.
Tumblr media
Now I know that a lot of fans like to act snobbish towards Viz translations (no, they're not perfect but people take it too far), but they have a very interesting nuance in chapter 167 on how Saitama sees Genos and Garou Tareo:
Tumblr media
Save. That's what Saitama thinks Genos did for him. Saved him. If you go all the way back to chapter 5, you realise that the separation from humanity process had begun for Saitama.
Tumblr media
Just as Garou would have turned into a complete monster, fit only for punching out of this world, were it not for Tareo speaking so powerfully to his humanity, Saitama found Genos, that weird young man who'd given up his human body and nurtured his humanity like it was a precious jewel, to be the anchor to humanity he needed.
I think you have a point about the importance of daily rituals grounding one. Still, with Saitama, one can never quite tell... Maybe he can do without every human need, but what will remain won't be human.
Not in the slightest.
It's good this story is great at making us laugh and groan; otherwise, we'd be quivering in horror.
