“You find that key yet, Rancher?” a voice called from way off in the distance.
Twilight barked back a negative, and continued to sniff around for the key to the exit of the room the others were in. There’d been a spot only his wolf form could easily get to, and so he’d climbed up to it and crawled through, moving soft dirt with his paws until he’d entered into the more spacious area he was in now.
The room appeared to be circular, but there were several high walls he couldn’t see over so he couldn’t tell for sure. They were somewhat maze-like, and confusing in their layout, so Twilight was forced to rely on scent, searching for the metallic, and no-doubt rusty-smelling key.
He turned several corners, following a faint metallic smell he hoped was his objective. There wasn’t much in the maze apart from a few rats and the concerning remains of a skeleton, and Twilight padded cautiously on, perking up the moment the glint of a treasure chest finally caught his eye. He ran up to it, and transformed back into a Hylian, eagerly opening the chest.
A dark, shining key sat inside, just what he’d been looking for.
Twilight reached inside with a warm feeling of satisfaction, then heard a faint click as he lifted the key. A cloud of dark particles shot up from the chest, blowing right in Twilight’s face, and he gasped involuntarily, inhaling a good portion of it.
He began coughing as the dust coated his throat, the dust making him choke as he stumbled backwards. The cloud settled after a moment, but Twilight kept coughing out whatever he could, blinking tears from his eyes and wiping dust off his face.
He patted himself down, and looked around for any threat or danger to his person, but the room was as silent as it had been, and apart from the dryness of his throat, Twilight felt no ill effects.
Must have been an old boobytrap, he thought to himself, coughing a bit more as he pocketed the key and headed back the way he came. Arrows or something were probably supposed to fly out at my face... Whatever it was probably disintegrated because they were so old.
Twilight coughed again, and shook more dust out of his hair.
It’s a good thing I wasn’t here a few decades sooner.
Twilight made it back out of the maze and into the other room without further incident, though the skeleton tried to grab him as he walked by. He easily fought it off, and told the others about it with a laugh as they continued through the dungeon, and the strange black dust entirely fled his mind.
The dungeon was large, obviously some kind of fort once upon a time, but it had been long abandoned apart from the monsters who’d taken up residence inside. The heroes ran into a large group of them shortly, and they set to work, room echoing with shouts and screeches alike.
Twilight went for a troublesome-looking gibdo (one of Legend’s fortunately, apparently his didn’t scream), and began attacking, slicing at the strangely thick bandages.
Sky was fighting another one nearby, and a little further away Legend was yelling something as Wild shot several fire arrows. A group of the gibdos burst into flames, but Twilight tried to focus on his own battle, even as Legend yelled at Wild again.
The gibdo wasn’t fast, but it was sturdy, and it took a lot of time for Twilight to make any headway in hurting it. He jumped around to the back of it more than once, slicing in the same spot, and the gibdo finally seemed like it was flagging after several of the attacks.
It made a move for him, swiping at his middle, but Twilight took the opportunity to roll around and run it through with his sword, the monster letting out an odd moan before collapsing into dust.
Twilight glanced at where the gibdo had swiped at him, but his tunic wasn’t even ripped. Satisfied that he was fine, he jumped back into the fray, avoiding a stalfos that jumped at him and nearly sliced off his arm. Twilight immediately went on the attack, blocking another swipe with his shield, and lunging forward to swipe at the monster.
But the moment he stepped forward, a strange wave of something swept over him, making him stumble. He blinked dizzily, head lightly spinning, and looked around in confusion.
His head felt light, the battle around him fading at the edges, and he put a hand to his head, wondering what on earth was going on.
He felt almost as if he was suffering the effects of an injury, a knock to the head, blood loss or something similar, but that gibdo had barely touched him, why was he..?
Twilight stumbled as he avoided a swipe from the stalfos’s blade, clumsily blocking it with his shield. The crash of the weapon hitting it made him wince, and he desperately tried to gather his wits about him so he could fight back.
What was going on here?
Twilight tried to go on the offensive, swinging his sword, but somehow he missed the stalfos entirely. The lack of resistance made him stumble, and the stalfos let out a strange clattering cackle as it swung at him again, red eyes blurring in Twilight’s vision.
A glowing blade suddenly entered his sight, and Twilight watched as Sky swiped straight through the stalfos that had been hedging him, the bones falling to pieces. The room was suddenly a lot quieter, and Twilight distantly realized that that must have been the last monster.
“Twilight, are you okay? That thing nearly got you!” Sky said with a smile, his voice only mildly worried as he sheathed his sword.
Twilight gave him a nod, blinking as he tried to make the room quit swimming around him. It refused to stop though, and Sky’s expression turned more truly concerned.
“Twilight? Are you all right?”
“Fine, I’m... I’m fine,” he said a little shakily, resting a hand on his head. “Think I... just...”
He coughed, black flecks falling on his hand, and his mind abruptly flashed back to the dust in the treasure chest.
...perhaps the boobytrap hadn’t been as ruined as he’d thought.
Sky’s eyes went wide, and the room suddenly lurched, shaking and wavering all around. Twilight heard a shout, but it was muffled and strange, and didn’t make any sense to his ears.
He couldn’t hold his weight any longer, and he felt his eyes roll back in his head as his legs gave out.
(...)
Something shook him, a bit frantically, and Twilight sluggishly came back to awareness.
He blinked his eyes open, and bit back a groan as he closed them again, his vision swirling and rolling around. Something was shaking him again, but Twilight didn’t reopen his eyes, afraid he would throw up if he did.
“Rancher, open your eyes, come on.”
Twilight reluctantly cracked them open, several things moving above him in dizzying color.
“How many fingers am I holding up?” the same voice asked him, and Twilight blinked, trying to focus on the things in his vision that kept blurring in and out of focus.
“Quit movin’ th’m,” he mumbled, and more voices echoed above him, making him only feel more dizzy as he tried to listen to them.
“Concussion you think?”
“He didn’t hit his head, there’s no injuries there I can find.”
“Well what’s wrong with him then?!”
“Has he had anything to eat today?”
“Probably needs a bath, he’s filthy.”
“Don’t be stupid, that wouldn’t make him faint!”
Twilight’s breath caught funny in his chest, and he coughed again, a sharp wave of vertigo hitting as someone sat him up. A groan escaped his lips, and a hand gently turned his head.
“Twilight, what’s wrong? What happened?”
Twilight blinked hazily, trying to focus on whoever was talking to him, but his vision refused to do what he wanted it to, and his dizziness grew to an excruciating degree.
He let out a whimper, uncertain of what was going on, and felt a sudden sharp pain in his chest, intense and painful. It spread through his body like liquid fire, and he cried out, moving suddenly agonizing.
“Twilight!”
The hand was back and frantically patting his cheek, and something moved in front of him again, but all Twilight could do was focus on the dizziness and pain that was demanding all of his attention.
“Twilight, please, focus, do you know what happened?”
Twilight breathed in shakily, tensing as another wave of pain ripped through him. He had to tell them what was wrong, he had to warn them in case there was more of the dust, in case it hurt one of them— but all he could do was try not to scream.
“Twilight?”
Twilight squeezed his eyes shut, then reopened them, trying to meet whoever was in front of him’s eyes.
“Th... dust...” he moaned, voice barely more then a whisper, “brea... thed...”
His breath caught with pain, and Twilight heard someone shout as the dizziness overcame him again, darkness washing over his vision.
(...)
When Twilight woke back up, he was being held between two people, arms over their shoulders.
He blinked dizzily, and saw stone under his feet, moving slowly as he was carried forward. We must still be in the dungeon.
Another wave of that strange fiery pain ripped through him, and Twilight gasped, making whoever was holding him startle.
“He’s awake!”
Footsteps clattered on the stone, and hands poked at him, lightly holding up his chin.
“Rancher? How are you feeling?”
Twilight couldn’t manage anything more then a groan, and something gently ran through his hair.
“Okay, that’s alright, you’re going to be fine. Can you drink something for us? Warriors thinks a potion will help.”
Twilight mumbled something he hoped was a good enough reply, and something cool was pressed to his lips. Sweetness hit his tongue as it was tilted back, and Twilight drank, waiting for the potion to kick in.
The very beginnings of warmth began to settle in his chest, but then his stomach lurched, and he jerked forward, coughing up the healing draught and gagging at the taste of it coming back up. It felt weirdly dry as well, nearly making him choke, and Twilight felt the arms come up to prop him into a slightly different position.
“Easy Rancher...”
“Should we give him another?”
“He won’t be able to keep it down, not with the way he’s acting.”
“Well now what?!”
“...Guys? He’s... not just throwing up potion.”
The room went oddly quiet, apart from Twilight’s harsh breathing, his stomach and head now swirling with nausea. He’d finished throwing up, but now his tongue and throat felt like sandpaper in his mouth. He coughed something out, and there was a hand on his cheek again, holding him steady.
“Four said he mentioned breathing in dust earlier... do you think that’s what he meant?”
“I don’t see what else he could have meant.”
“So the dust is making him like this... we just gotta get it out somehow!”
Twilight moaned as his head swirled, and something touched him, gently rubbing his shoulder as his awareness started to fade again.
“Don’t worry Twi, we’ll fix this. Just hold on.”
(...)
Twilight came to with a jolt the next time, something forcing his mouth open, air being pulled through his lips.
He heaved in a gasp, and hands moved to hold him down, voices talking far above his head and the ground rolling up and down under his back. He tried to struggle, but the hands were firm, and something brushed through his hair as he tried to drag in another gasp.
“I’m so sorry Twilight, but this’ll help, try and stay still.”
The wind increased in its intensity, and Twilight felt like every bit of air was being sucked from inside him, leaving him unable to breath, unable to fight, to get away they were holding him down—
A sob choked from his throat, but he couldn’t move, couldn’t resist, couldn’t stop them from doing whatever it was they were doing and it made him feel sick. What felt like sand fell down his cheeks, and he let out a breathless scream as the air continued to be pulled from him, the fire in his limbs blazing, his head swirling.
There was more talking but Twilight couldn’t focus on any of it, his world narrowed down to pain and wind and a scratchy feeling in his throat and lungs and all over inside of him.
It hurt.
He still couldn’t breathe, no matter how he thrashed or cried out and the pain was so intense and thick that the darkness soon dragged him under yet again.
(...)
A hand was brushing through his hair, teasing out knots, gentle in its motions.
Twilight didn’t do anything but focus on it for a minute, the touch soothing and calm. Then he realized just how dry his throat felt, his insides hollow, and he let out a breathy moan, trying to open his eyes.
“Whoa, easy,” someone said, and Twilight finally dragged his eyes open, pleasantly surprised when his vision didn’t smear. He was able to look to the side and meet who turned out to be Four’s eyes without any swirling spots or fire in his chest, and he felt a spark of equal relief and confusion.
“...’thy?” he rasped, and Four nodded, looking pleased.
“Hey, he’s awake!” another voice said, and Sky leaned over into Twilight’s vision. He looked tired, but there was a smile on his face. “Good to see you up, Rancher.”
“Oh thank Hylia,” another voice gasped, and Wild appeared in his vision as well, looking utterly relieved. “We weren’t sure if that was going to work or not.”
“If what w...work..?” Twilight croaked, and Sky, Four, and Wild all looked at each other.
“We had to get the dust out somehow,” Four said quietly, guilt thick in his voice. “I figured since you inhaled it... sucking it out would be our best bet.”
“Four has an item that worked rather well,” Sky said, though his smile had grown tight. “We weren’t sure at first if it had helped, but... well, we’re glad you’re all right, Rancher.”
Twilight blinked, and looked between the three. He was having some trouble following exactly what was being said, he felt sore and tired, and a bit like a paper straw someone had sucked air through a few too many times, but even he could tell that Four felt awful.
And sure, he didn’t quite know why, or remember exactly what had happened, but Four had helped him, and that was enough for Twilight.
“Thank you,” he said sincerely, and worked past the bit of dizziness still in his head to reach over and pat Four’s hand. “Thank you.”
He couldn’t manage anything further, but it seemed like it was enough. Four took his hand in his and gave it a squeeze, and Twilight dredged up a smile.
“Screw dungeons,” Wild muttered fiercely, and went back to playing with Twilight’s hair. “They’re stupid and they suck.”
Twilight barked out a laugh, wheezy and uncomfortable, but it was worth it seeing the relieved looks that were exchanged above him.
“Agree. Screw ‘em,” he croaked.

Buddie prompt: first kiss
I know I’m about to do a whole week of Buddie first kisses, but this prompt is my weakness XD. Also I hope that season 4 gives us a little taste of Eddie dating- other than Buck- just because I think it will be good for him. And we wouldn’t want them to get together too quickly ;) (also any hate against Ana will get you persoanlly smacked by me)
In Eddie’s defense, it wasn’t supposed to be like this. Not that he had planned it, but if he had it certainly wouldn’t have been like this.
-2 Days Earlier-
Buck ducked out of Eddie’s grasp, which didn’t deter Eddie in the slightest as he continued to chase after Buck to try and get his phone back. Eddie had been texting Ana- now officially not Chris’s teacher so there was no conflict of interest for him texting her after she’d slipped him her number at the end of the year party for Christopher’s class- when Buck had jokingly grabbed his phone and started making jokes about ‘Eddie’s new girlfriend’ in a way that was more akin to someone Christopher’s age than Buck’s 29 years.
“Dammit, Buck!” Eddie shouted as the back of Buck’s shirt slipped through his fingers yet again and Buck all but jumped down the stairs into open part of the station. Eddie finally managed to snag Buck’s shirt and they crashed into each other, the force of impact throwing both of them to the concrete floor. Buck twisted expertly to keep Eddie’s phone out of his reach as Eddie tried to wrangle and pin down Buck’s long limbs.
He’d managed to get his knee pressed into Buck’s stomach to pin his hips- making Buck’s legs relatively ineffectual on the slick concrete floor- and one of Buck’s arms. But given Buck height advantage and Eddie’s awkward position, Eddie still couldn’t reach his phone.
“What the hell is going on here?”
Both of them blanched as they lifted their heads to see Bobby staring at them with confusion and disapproval clearly etched into every aspect of his body language. Eddie felt his cheeks heat up as he noticed Hen and Chim nearly falling over each other as they tried to stifle their laughter at the whole thing.
“Oh, nothing,” Buck said casually and Eddie snapped his eyes back to Buck’s face to glare at him. But his glare instantly softened into fond frustration at the easy smile on Buck’s face as he tipped his chin up just a little bit to be able to see Bobby.
“Buck-” Bobby started with exasperation and rolled his eyes, silently begging for patience, before he just leaned down and plucked Eddie’s phone from Buck’s fingers. “I should put the two of you in time-out.”
“You do realize we’re not kids right?” Buck asked and wiggled to try and get Eddie off of him.
“Really?” Bobby asked and pointedly looked at their ridiculous position on the floor of the station. “Try acting like it.”
Buck snorted but that bright smile of his never faltered. “Okay, okay. You made your point, Eds. Let me up,” he said and arched his hips up to try and dislodge Eddie’s knee. “Pretty sure you’ve lodged my belt buckle into my intestines.”
“You deserved it,” Eddie muttered and moved just enough to sit on the floor beside Buck’s legs. Buck laughed and Eddie couldn’t look away from him as he sat up and rested his arms on his bent knees.
“I guess I did,” Buck said and stood up, brushing off his pants before offering Eddie a hand up. Eddie took it and let Buck tug him to his feet, shaking his head a little before brushing off his own uniform.
Bobby held out Eddie’s phone and Eddie took it and shoved it into his pocket with a mumbled ‘thank you’. “Do I even want to know what that was all about?” Bobby asked after Buck has jogged over to talk to Hen and Chim.
Eddie felt his cheeks getting hot again and he swiped a hand over his face. “Just… finally talking to a woman.” Eddie rubbed the back of his neck with a small smile that clearly gave away his nerves. “Chris’s teacher- former teacher- Ana. She’s… she’s really great, Bobby.”
Bobby nodded silently and Eddie didn’t feel like the captain was judging him, just letting him take things in his own time. “If she makes you happy, Eddie,” Bobby said and clapped a hand down onto Eddie’s shoulder, “that’s what matters. That and how Christopher feels about it.”
Eddie nodded. He couldn’t help but grimace a little at that. He’d not told Christopher about it yet because officially they hadn’t even gone on a date. They’d texted back and forth and even talked a little on the phone, but with Eddie’s schedule there just hadn’t ever been a good opportunity. But Ana had been patient with him, understanding of his work and that he had to focus on Christopher’s needs before anything as trivial as a date. Besides, there wasn’t any sense of urgency to make things official. Because official- in Eddie’s experience- meant complicated, and what he had with Ana right now was good, it was enough.
A part of Eddie whispered that that should be a warning sign, but Eddie shrugged it off as one of those moments of self-doubt and fear of change that Frank had told him he needed to work through despite his nerves. Frank had told him that change was part of life, and that he needed to let other people in and not carry the weight of everything on his own.
The rest of their shift went pretty smoothly and Buck bounced up to Eddie when Eddie was finishing up changing back into his street clothes. “We still on for movie night?” Buck asked and if Eddie didn’t know Buck as well as he did, he wouldn’t have seen the flicker of uncertainty behind Buck’s eyes.
“Yeah, why wouldn’t we be?” Eddie asked as he made sure that his wallet and keys hadn’t fallen out of his jean pockets.
Buck seemed to hesitate for a second before he shook his head. “No reason. So do you want me to pick up the popcorn this time or are you going to insist on that gross cheese stuff.”
Eddie rolled his eyes and he closed his locker door. “It is not gross, and Chris likes it too not just me.”
“Cheese should never have been put on popcorn. Period. Eddie, it’s a sin against God and all humankind,” Buck said dramatically as Eddie laughed and knocked his shoulder into Buck’s.
“Fine, get your boring, plain popcorn, but don’t bitch when Christopher asks me to melt butter onto his,” Eddie warned and pointed at Buck seriously. Buck held up his hands with a grin that had Eddie’s stern façade cracking into a soft smile. “See you at home?” Eddie asked as he unlocked his truck.
“Yeah,” Buck said and then he was swinging himself up into his jeep and driving off to head to the store to grab popcorn.
Eddie parked his truck in the driveway, making sure to leave enough room for Buck’s jeep so that Buck didn’t have to park on the street outside the house, before heading inside where Carla was looking after Christopher. “Hey,” Eddie said as he tossed his keys into the bowl by the door and hung his jacket up. He was about to ask Carla about how her husband was feeling, when his phone chimed in his pocket. It was a text from Ana and Eddie felt a small smile tug at his mouth as he read it over.
Ana: I just remembered the name of that book that you told me Christopher was looking for, it’s The Tale of Despereaux by Kate DiCamillo.
Eddie: Thanks, Ana. I’ll see if we can swing him by the library and pick it up. You just saved bedtime
Ana: Any time 😉
“What’s got you grinning like that?” Carla asked and peered over the edge of Eddie’s phone. She laughed and poked at his arm with a knowing look. “Oh, I see exactly what’s going on here now. When are you finally gonna ask her out?”
Eddie blushed and he locked and shoved his phone into his pocket like a guilty teenager. “I don’t know. I’m not sure we’re there yet, you know?” Eddie tried to shrug it off as he tucked his hands into his back pockets.
“You haven’t even taken her out once,” Carla pointed out, making sure to glance down the hall to make sure Christopher wasn’t going to overhear before she continued. “How are you ever gonna know if you don’t do more than text about children’s books?”
Eddie felt something thick settle in his throat and he didn’t know how to answer, but thankfully he was saved from having to try by Buck walking straight in with his easy boisterous energy that filled the Diaz household the second he stepped inside. “I brought popcorn and I made sure to get one box of buttered even though we both know that it’s just fake chemically stuff that- oh, hey, Carla,” Buck said and grinned at her when he looked up from toeing off his shoes at the door.
“Hey, Buckaroo,” Carla said and pulled him into a hug before giving Eddie a look that he didn’t understand before she glanced at Buck with a softness. “Alright, well I’ll leave you two to your night in.” There was something to the way she said it that had Eddie’s brow furrowing a little.
“Are Dad and Buck here?” Christopher rounded the corner and he shrieked in delight before making a beeline for Buck, who was closer. Buck scooped him up and blew a raspberry into the side of Christopher’s neck, only pulling more laughter from the boy as he tried to push Buck’s face away. Any linger tension from the day melted out of Eddie’s shoulders as he listened to Christopher’s laugh mixing with Buck’s as Buck finally set him back down onto his feet.
“I’ll see you boys tomorrow,” Carla said and folded her jacket over her arm as she opened the door.
“Bye, Carla!” Christopher said excitedly before grabbing Buck’s hand and tugging him down the hall to show him something, Buck just waving at her over his shoulder.
“Night, Carla,” Eddie said before he watched her go and locked the door behind her. He grabbed the bag that Buck had dropped when Christopher had come out, shaking his head a little, before he walked into the kitchen. He set the bag down alongside his phone before putting everything away and starting on dinner- despite how much he knew Christopher and Buck would whine at his cooking.
Buck trotted out of Christopher’s room and, predictably, took over dinner. He only let Eddie chop up the green peppers, onions, and tomatoes. “You realize that this is basically Hamburger Helper, which I can manage to make without you.”
“I’m getting Christopher to eat vegetables. Shut up, Eddie.” Buck shot him a playful glare and Eddie just rolled his eyes. Christopher came out and peeked at what he and Buck were making.
“Is it mac and cheese?” Christopher asked curiously.
“Yup,” Buck said and kept an eye on Chris as the boy was pretty close to the stove top and had a tendency to want to touch everything. “It’s got a few more ingredients than regular mac and cheese, but it’s really good.”
Christopher didn’t argue, just watched Buck add things in and even grinned as Buck snuck him a quick taste after making sure it wouldn’t burn the boy’s mouth. Eddie held his breath as Christopher chewed thoughtfully, but he grinned once he swallowed and nodded. “It’s really good.” Eddie blew out a short breath of relief. It wasn’t necessarily that Chris was a picky eater, but he had his finicky moments.
Once dinner was finished, Eddie and Christopher set the table while Buck turned everything off and set it out. It was incredibly domestic and familiar and at first Eddie didn’t think about it. It wasn’t until dinner was over, Christopher going to set up the movie while Eddie and Buck washed and dried the dinner dishes, that he thought about how easily Buck had become a fixture in his and Christopher’s lives.
He brushed it off as Buck started on his rant about diacetyl and it’s effects on the lungs, despite pointing out that it had nothing to do with actually eating the popcorn with the artificial flavoring but actually inhaling the chemical in the processing of microwave popcorn, and just laughed as Christopher looked at Buck with abject disgust on his face before pointedly shoving a handful of popcorn into his mouth. Eddie hadn’t been able to keep in his own burst of laughter despite Buck’s wounded look.
Eddie didn’t pay much attention to the movie- he hardly ever did on their movie nights- since he was so wrapped up in watching Christopher and Buck. They both has such expressive reactions to everything and every so often they would look at each other in unison and one or both of them would crack a joke, sending both of them into fits of laughter that almost made Eddie consider pausing the movie since there was no way they could be paying attention.
Too soon, it was Christopher’s bedtime and Eddie was getting him ready for bed. He made sure Christopher’s teeth were brushed and that he’d changed into clean pajamas before Christopher got into bed. “Alright, kid, get some sleep,” Eddie said and pressed a kiss to Christopher’s cheek before tucking him in securely.
“Can Buck tuck me in too?” Christopher asked and Eddie nodded, there was no second-guessing because Buck had tucked Christopher in before without Eddie, before standing and walking out to the living room where Buck was still on the couch.
“He wants you to tuck him in too,” Eddie said and nodded over his shoulder. Buck cracked a small smile, ducking his head as if he were trying to hide it, before getting up and heading into Chris’s room. Eddie cleaned up the popcorn mess before sitting on the couch and waiting for Buck to come back. “He good?” Eddie asked when Buck came back and sat down.
“Yeah. Probably going to be out in a few minutes. He could barely keep his eyes open as I tucked him in.” Buck shook his head fondly and then a slightly stifling silence settled between them. In the awkwardness of the moment, Eddie heard the distant chime of his phone and he touched his pocket on instinct. He’d left his phone in the kitchen and never even realized it. “That Ana?” Buck asked and there was a slight edge to his tone as he asked.
“Probably,” Eddie said carefully as he felt something uncomfortable settle in his gut. “You don’t-” Eddie looked up at the ceiling instead of Buck’s face, as if that would make this conversation any less painfully awkward, “you don’t think I’m making a mistake, right? I mean, we’ve talked a little and she’s pretty nice and she’s obviously smart and understands Chris’s needs but…” Eddie trailed off ineffectually.
           “But?” Buck asked.
“But that’s not the same as a full-blown relationship. Especially not one with me. I mean,” Eddie bit his lip, “I’m a widower- which comes with baggage, a veteran- which comes with even more baggage, as well as being a single dad to a kid with special needs and working a dangerous job with insane hours. It’s not exactly like I’m prime boyfriend material.” He didn’t mean for their to be a note of self-deprecation to his voice- Frank was constantly harping on Eddie that Eddie was too hard on himself and tore himself down too much, it was something they were trying to work on.
“That’s not true,” Buck said, his voice sounding so small and hesitant. “It’s like Bobby told me when I was with Abby,” Buck started and Eddie couldn’t help but grimace at the mention of Buck’s ex- despite having only been around her for a few moments he couldn’t help but feel bitter towards what she’d done to him. “He said, ‘when it’s something real, you don’t try to save that person from their problems, you step into their problems with them’. If Ana’s the right one, well…” Buck gave Eddie a smile but it didn’t quite reach his eyes and if Eddie didn’t know better, he’d have thought Buck looked vaguely sick.
“So you think I should ask her out?” Eddie asked tentatively, almost feeling like he needed Buck’s permission before he could go through with it.
“I think that you should give her a chance before writing her off. She obviously likes you, and Chris already knows her,” Buck pointed out and that strained smile made another appearance. Something about it made Eddie’s gut churn, but he nodded. Buck glanced down at his watch and stood. “It’s getting late and I’ve got a shift in the morning. Tell me how it goes?” And something about the way Buck said it made Eddie’s gut twist, but he just gave Buck a smile.
“Of course, man,” Eddie said and stood up. He tugged Buck into a hug like they always did when Buck left. Buck suddenly looked tired and the offer for Buck to stay was on the tip of Eddie’s tongue, but then Buck was pulling his shoes on and breezing out the door.
Eddie watched the place where Buck disappeared for a moment longer before he went into the kitchen and scooped up his phone. There were a few texts from Ana and Eddie cringed.
Ana: You know that the library puts on some events that I think Christopher would like
I could send you a link if you wanted to look them over, I don’t think Christopher’s one of those kids who just quits wanting to learn because the sun is shining
Eddie: No, he’s not. Definitely a sponge that one
Sorry about the late response, had a work friend over
Ana: The infamous Buck, I assume?
Christopher talked about him a lot in class
Eddie: Yeah, he and Chris have a standing movie night.
Speaking of, would you maybe want to catch a movie sometime? Or go out and get coffee?
Eddie tried not to hold his breath as the little ellipses popped up a few times before a new message chimed through.
Ana: I’d actually really like that. How does coffee tomorrow afternoon sound?
Chris is spending the afternoon with your Abuela right?
Eddie: Yeah he is. That works great for me. Say around 1:00?
Ana: Perfect 😊
           Ana shared a location pin
I don’t know how close that is for you, but it’s the place I usually stop at before school starts.
Eddie: That’s just fine. I’ll see you there
Eddie blew out a breath and he rubbed the back of his neck. Worries about the how the actual date were going to go started to circle around in his head and he chewed his lip, fiddling with his phone before he went to his bedroom to go through his nightly routine to try and decompress.
…..
Eddie had changed his shirt six times before putting on the red Henley he’d started out with. He fixed his hair in the mirror again before he went to see if Christopher had his bag ready for spending the afternoon with Abuela. The original plan had been so that Eddie could get some household things done- pay some bills, go grocery shopping, and get some minor house repairs done- but now he was going on this date. And depending how well it went, Eddie might not get any of what he’d wanted done.
“Ready, mijo?” Eddie asked as he strapped his watch onto his wrist.
“Yeah, Dad,” Christopher said with a bit of reluctance. Usually he was excited to spend the afternoon with Abuela.
“What’s wrong, Chris?” Eddie asked, suddenly worried if Christopher had caught the stomach bug that Denny had had a week or so ago.
Christopher shrugged slightly, guiltily looking down at his feet. “I saw the messages on your phone,” Christopher said and shuffled his sneaker on the floor. Eddie felt a spike of worry and knelt down in front of Christopher. “Daddy, why are you cheating on Buck?” Eddie felt his cheeks get hot and he felt his jaw opened and shut uselessly for a moment. “Are you and Buck going to break up? Because David said that his mom and dad broke up when his dad said that his mom cheated-”
“Chris, Buck and I aren’t together,” Eddie said before his son could finish whatever nightmare story he was about to tell. Christopher’s nose wrinkled up and he rolled his eyes at Eddie like he knew something Eddie didn’t. “Why would you think that, buddy?”
“It’s obvious,” Christopher said and waved his hand dismissively as if he and Eddie had already gone over all of this. “Can we just go to Abuela’s now? You’re going to be late.” And the bitterness behind the tone felt like Eddie had been punched squarely in the chest. Christopher shouldered his backpack and brushed past Eddie- Eddie suddenly having nightmares of Christopher’s impending teenaged years- coldly.
Eddie chewed his lip and during the drive over to Abuela’s, he tried to talk to Christopher, but the ten year old was resolutely freezing Eddie out. He helped Christopher out of the car and walked with him up to Abuela’s door. Christopher was bright and happy as he and Abuela chattered away in Spanish, which only served to sting Eddie even worse.
“Alright, buddy,” Eddie said and knelt down to be level with Chris. “I’m gonna go. Be good for Abuela, okay?”
“I will,” Christopher said. Eddie pulled Chris in for a hug but it was stiff and he could tell that Christopher didn’t really want to hug him. Even Abuela seemed shocked as Chris quickly pulled away and went inside the house.
“I-uh- I’ve got to go,” Eddie said and he felt Christopher’s hurt like a raw wound.
“We’ll be here,” Abuela said and seemed to grimace at the tension between father and son. She hugged Eddie warmly and pressed a quick kiss to his cheek before Eddie turned to get back into his truck.
He tapped the address Ana had sent to him into his phone’s navigation and followed the directions as he tried to push Christopher’s mood- and words- from his mind. Once he’d parked and spotted Ana at a table underneath the awning of the little coffeeshop, his mind shifted to nerves again. He wiped his suddenly sweaty palms onto his jeans and took a breath before getting out of the truck.
“Hey,” Eddie said warmly as he gave her a short wave. Her smile was pretty as Eddie caught her sight. “I’m just going to-” He pointed over his shoulder towards the door so he could grab a coffee.
“Of course,” she said and wrapped her hands around her own cup.
Eddie nodded and smiled as he moved to head inside. He ordered a coffee and had to stop himself from ordering Buck’s preferred drink out of habit. He shook his head at the reminder of Buck and thanked the harried looking barista as they called his name and slid his drink over the counter.
“How are you?” Ana asked when Eddie had sat down, trying not to fidget too much with the cardboard stirrer that he’d grabbed to mix in a packet of sugar.
“I’m good, thanks. How are you?” Eddie asked politely, thankful that the manners Abuela had drilled into his head as a kid could help take over for this part.
“Really good.” She reached up and tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear and Eddie couldn’t help but flick his eyes over her. Her curls were pulled back from her face, but a few little strands framed her face. The brown eyes that Eddie had been almost fixated on during their parent-teacher conference once again caught his attention. She looked really nice in a light blue shirt that would have complimented Buck’s eyes- wait where the hell did that come from?
They lapsed into a silence and after a moment both of them laughed a little nervously. Eddie tucked his hands underneath his thighs and gave her an apologetic smile. “I’m-uh- a little out of practice. I haven’t really dated since Christopher’s mother, which is just the worst thing to say on a first date,” Eddie said with a grimace.
“No, no it isn’t,” Ana said as she gave him a sympathetic smile. Her hand twitched on the table as if she wanted to reach for Eddie’s hand but since he’d put them under the table it would be awkward. Eddie casually wrapped his hands around his coffee cup. “To be completely honest with you, I haven’t really gone on a date since college.” She pulled a cute face that had Eddie grinning.
It was easier after that. They walked about work a little, Eddie telling some funny- but appropriate- stories from work while she- without mentioning any kids’ names because that was professional- told some stories from her teaching experience.
“So my mentor teacher and I were standing there- completely shocked- while the poor boy was in tears over the eraser he’d managed to get stuck up his nose,” Ana said and Eddie grimaced in sympathy. They’d been on a call or two about objects in kids’ noses and unfortunately since they had kids, he and Hen were usually on removal duty. “Thankfully, no parents were upset. They actually apologized to us because it was an ‘unfortunately common occurrence’.”
Eddie laughed and shook his head as he took a drink out of his coffee. “I definitely do not envy some aspects of your job,” Eddie said with a hint of humor.
“Ah yes, because firefighting must be so easy,” Ana said and this time she did reach out and touch the back of Eddie’s hand where it was sitting on the table. Eddie glanced down at her hand and while his smile never faltered, he felt like something had shifted. As much as he liked Ana and found her beautiful, because she was so amazingly sweet and funny and beautiful, he realized that he wasn’t really attracted to her. It was almost like she realized it too because she pulled her hand back after barely a moment of contact. “Well, this was really fun, Eddie,” she said honestly, and Eddie could see the sincerity in her eyes. “But I have some seminars to attend and I’m sure Christopher is waiting for you.”
“Yeah, of course.” Eddie stood and gave her a genuine smile of his own. She got on her toes to pull him into a hug and Eddie didn’t resist, wondering if maybe he was still just worrying too much over what Christopher said. She pulled back just enough that they were only a few inches apart and there seemed to be a sort of determined edge in her eyes as she leaned in. Eddie closed his eyes as she kissed him and he kept his hands respectfully on her waist.
Kissing Ana was nice, but it wasn’t really anything special as awful as Eddie was sure that sounded. She pulled away and they exchanged sheepish, weak smiles. “We’ll talk later?” She asked tentatively as she scooped up her coffee cup.
“Yeah,” Eddie said and he was thankful it didn’t come out as conflicted as he felt. When she was gone, he thumbed at his bottom lip and gathered up his own cup. He sighed heavily as he made his way back to his truck and sat in the driver’s seat for a long moment before he went about his errands for the day.
The date played over and over in his head and he wondered if maybe he’d just gone about it all wrong, but then he just shook his head at himself. It was just that they weren’t compatible. There was nothing wrong with that. They could still be friends.
Eddie blew out a breath as he made his way back to Abuela’s, feeling the events of the day dragging at him, but he felt his heart kick up in his chest as he saw Buck’s jeep sitting on the street outside of Abuela’s house. He couldn’t help the smile that pulled at his cheeks and he switched off the ignition before hopping out of the truck and heading inside.
Abuela’s kitchen was filled with the sounds of Buck and Christopher’s laughter alongside the tinny audio of the little radio that she kept on her window ledge. Everything that had made Eddie feel so awkward and clumsy earlier in the day, settled perfectly in his chest as he walked into the kitchen to see Buck and Christopher helping Abuela make what looked and smelled like fajitas.
“I see how it is, you’ll show Buck your recipe, but not me?” Eddie asked and he couldn’t help but grin as they all three turned to look at him in shock, none of them having heard him come in.
Abuela clicked her tongue at him and waved her hand dismissively. “That’s because Buck can do more than boil water- and he can do it unsupervised.” She shot him a look that had him blushing and shaking his head as both Buck and Christopher laughed at his expense. He’d take it given the very icy goodbye he’d been given by his son earlier in the day.
“Alright, fair enough,” Eddie said and ran a hand through his hair.
“Come on, Eddito,” Abuela said and looped her arm through his to tug him over to where her cutting board was sitting. “You can cut up the vegetables. Just… evenly.” Eddie couldn’t help but blush even hotter at Buck’s stifled snort.
…..
Buck: I never did ask how your date went
Eddie: It was okay.
           We kissed
But I don’t think there’s going to be a second one because there just wasn’t any sort of spark, ya know? I mean she’s a good friend, but I’m pretty sure that’s it (Message to Buck failed to send)
-An hour earlier-
Buck had been avoiding him all shift and Eddie couldn’t understand why. He’d thought about checking his phone to see if Buck had texted after Eddie fell asleep, but he’d left it on the nightstand in his rush to get to work since he’d slept through his alarm.
Eddie had frowned and wondered if maybe Christopher had said something to Buck about him thinking that Eddie and Buck were dating- maybe that had made Buck feel uncomfortable. Or maybe he thought that Eddie had told Christopher that and Buck didn’t know how to tell Eddie that they weren’t dating- which of course he knew but still.
They got a call and it was really bad fire in an apartment complex. Between the cheap materials that had somehow been overlooked in the building inspection and the industrial chemicals that were being house in the basement of the building, it was burning hot and fast.
Eddie and Buck fell into step beside each other after they’d secured their masks. They were tasked with making sure the passable parts of the building were cleared before anything in the basement exploded. Eddie’s heart was thundering against his ribs as he and Buck jogged through the building, making sure to be mindful of the debris.
They found a college-aged girl and Eddie looped her arm around his neck easily. “Come on,” Eddie shouted so that he would be able to be heard through the thick mask.
“Let me just check this next room. I’ll be right behind you,” Buck said with such an earnest promise in his face that Eddie found himself nodding and making his way out of the building with the girl. He’d just passed her off to Chim to get some oxygen as well as a full work-up when he heard the all-too-familiar sound of an explosion before the force was throwing him forward against the pavement.
His ears were ringing and his vision was blurred but he forced himself up so that he could turn to look at the building. His heart felt like it was in a vice and he ripped off his mask, his helmet clattering to the pavement as he swiped at his eyes to clear them.
He saw movement on the pavement and his chest seized in relief when he read the familiar last name on the back of the turnout gear as Buck pushed himself up onto his hands and knees carefully. Eddie was instantly at Buck’s side and he helped Buck to his feet the rest of the way before he took off Buck’s helmet and mask. Eddie checked him over quickly for any signs of head injury. When he didn’t find any- and he didn’t know what possessed him to do this- he kissed Buck. Buck’s hands clenched against Eddie’s sides and Eddie just held onto the front of Buck’s turnout gear as if he were worried that letting go would make Buck disappear.
Buck pulled back and Eddie suddenly felt the full realization of what he did crash into him. He’d just kissed Buck. He had just kissed Buck. His co-worker/best friend Buck.
In Eddie’s defense, it wasn’t supposed to be like this. Not that he had planned it, but if he had it certainly wouldn’t have been like this.
“I know, I know,” Buck mumbled, the two of them still close enough together that Buck’s bottom lip brushed against Eddie’s mouth as he spoke. “That was stupid and I should never do it again.”
“Almost getting blow up, yeah- definitely try not to do that again. Kissing… well, I think I’d be okay with that if you are,” Eddie said, his mouth apparently deciding to run away from his brain.
Buck frowned a little. “But your date with Ana…?”
“I told you it was a bust,” Eddie said and watched the little furrow form between Buck’s brow.
“I didn’t… what?” Buck asked. “The last thing you told me was that you guys kissed.”
Slowly, Eddie realized what must have happened. Eddie shook his head. “We did, but it didn’t mean anything. We both sort of realized that we just weren’t really into each other that much. Besides, I think I had my heart set on somebody else.” Eddie gave Buck a small, hopeful smile.
“Yeah?” Buck asked and he leaned into Eddie a little more.
“Yeah,” Eddie breathed and he couldn’t help but laugh a little through his nose when Buck kissed him again. The wolf-whistles from Hen and Chim- and the reprimand from Bobby later that they both got later- he could have done without though.

[ 365 Days of SasuHina || Day Two Hundred Fifty-Two: In My Room ] [ Uchiha Sasuke, Hyūga Hinata ] [ SasuHina ] [ Verse: Best Years of Your Life ] [ AO3 Link ]
Sasuke’s always been a bit of a...reclusive boy. Not for any real particular reason. His life is normal enough. His father is a rugged man, chief of the small city’s police. Maybe a bit gruff and hard to understand at times. And...maybe holds rather high expectations for his boys. But nothing too out of the ordinary. His mother is a bubbly, caring, but stubborn woman. She’d been a teacher briefly before marrying her husband, choosing to settle down with her kids, occasionally subbing at the local high school. Far more gentle with her sons than her husband, she’s nonetheless just as eager to see them successful.
And his older brother, Itachi, is a model son. Having graduated top of his class in high school, he’s currently acing his college courses and even maintaining a part-time job on top of it all. The pair of brothers are best friends...but Sasuke will never admit to pangs of jealousy whenever Itachi is praised.
After all, Sasuke tries his best in high school. He’s currently one of the top contenders for valedictorian, but a few other kids have kept up perfect grades alongside him. And with all his time devoted to studies, he hasn’t had time to branch out into any clubs, activities, or sports. In fact...he doesn’t have time for much beyond his workload at all.
He has one close friend...if he can even call Naruto that. They drive each other up the wall, but somehow still get along when it counts. Naruto’s loud, brash, act-before-thinking attitude is the exact opposite of Sasuke’s own cool, quiet, contemplative demeanor. One would think them unable to see eye to eye on anything. And they’d mostly be right.
Other than that...Sasuke only knows most of his other classmates in passing. There’s Naruto’s girlfriend, Sakura...one of the girls who was always driving Sasuke crazy in junior high trying to get his attention. Thankfully she’s wised up to his utter disinterest, and given in instead to Naruto’s undying affections. She’s just as loud and obnoxious, so he supposes the pairing makes good sense.
And then...there’s Hinata. A quiet, studious girl who was one of the few to avoid chasing after mister popular Sasuke. She, instead, had always been interested in Naruto of all people. But her demeanor had meant going mostly unnoticed...and when he did catch on, well...Naruto apparently found her ‘weird’.
Which...honestly Sasuke couldn’t see. She was a lot like him in some ways. Stuck to her work, didn’t branch out much, but weird? There wasn’t anything weird about her...except maybe her ability to find something worthwhile in the blond idiot he called his best friend.
Once Naruto finally landed himself Sakura’s attention, however...Hinata had started to drift. While she’d been trying to get into their little friend circle, the rejection had apparently stung too much, and she retreated instead to a small group of boys that acted much like older brothers: Shino and Kiba. The former was weird: a quiet boy obsessed with entomology. The latter was the opposite: loud...and obsessed with dogs.
Why she’d ever resort to them was beyond Sasuke, but...well, it’s not exactly like they were friends. He’d hardly said a word to her...though at least he made some effort to acknowledge her, unlike the rest of his iffy friend group. Naruto always looked so put off by her, and Sakura...well, Sakura didn’t have time for people like Hinata.
But it bothered him...and still bothers him. As they enter their senior year, and everyone doubles down, Sasuke can’t help but notice that Hinata’s still off mostly by herself. Granted, he’s much the same, lately. Even Naruto has been afforded less of his time since school started. There’s too many exams to cram for, homework to do, college admissions to sort through.
But eventually, Sasuke makes a decision. If no one else is going to pay her any mind, and he’s just as much of a recluse...then he’s going to reach out to her. If for nothing else than to satisfy his curiosity, so be it.
Something just...tells him he should. There’s enough similarity between them to make him wonder. And if his so-called friends aren’t going to give her the time of day, then he’ll do it.
A few days after having come to his conclusion, he finds the perfect opportunity. Classes are over for the day, and she’s still at her locker, sorting out her books and binders.
“Hey.”
Inhaling sharply, she nearly drops her stuff, turning to look at him as if he’s a ghost popping up to haunt her. “S...Sasuke?”
“Yeah. You okay? Didn’t mean to freak you out.”
“Yes, I - I’m all right,” she replies, shoulders sagging in visible relief. “I just wasn’t, um...I wasn’t expecting a-anyone to...be here.”
“Sorry.”
“No, that’s fine. Um…” A hand tucks hair behind her ear a bit nervously. “...do you -? Was there something you...wanted?”
“Yeah, actually. I thought I’d ask if you’d like to study together.”
She blinks. “...you mean like...a study group?”
“Well, I don’t have a group...but we’re in quite a few of the same classes. Thought maybe you’d like someone to slog through homework with or something.”
Hinata stares at him for a moment, clearly not sure where this is coming from. “I’ve...never really thought about it before. Did you...need help with a subject, or…?”
“No. Just, uh…” How to explain… “...got bored of doing it alone. Naruto’s not in any of my classes this year, and Sakura’s...not a good study partner. Thought maybe it’d be easier if there was someone to bounce off of. Maybe help out if we need it. Sound like something you’d want to do?”
A bit of understanding brightens her face. “I, um...s-sure! Would we - would we do it here at school, or...at one of our houses…?”
“Haven’t really...gotten that far,” Sasuke admits. “Honestly I thought you’d say no.”
“Oh...well, usually I do all my work at home. My father can be sort of, um...strict. But if I tell him it’s a group thing, I think he’d say it was okay. Maybe we could...g-go to your house? It would be a nice, um...change of pace.”
Hearing something a bit...off in her tone, Sasuke perks a brow, but nods. “Yeah, sure. You ask him, and let me know. I guess if it’s cleared, we’ll go to my place tomorrow and get started?”
“S...sure! And um…” There’s a small pause as she tries to wrangle her words. “Thank you, for...asking me. It’s - well, it’s nice to be...thought of,” she trails off, looking a bit sheepish.
“No problem. Guess either way, I’ll talk to you tomorrow?”
“Y...yeah!”
Phase one...complete.
And after school the next day, her eager smile as she approaches looks promising.
“He said it’s okay! I just have to be home by six so, um...so I’m there for dinner.”
“Sounds good.” The pair make their way to the Uchiha household, close enough to just walk. “Any subject you wanna start on first?”
“Um...maybe biology. I haven’t been s-studying as much as I’d like for the quiz on Friday.”
“Yeah, good idea.”
Upon entering, Sasuke calls out a greeting, hearing no response. “Huh...guess no one’s home. Dad’s at work, so...maybe Mom went out on errands or something.”
“Ah…” Looking around a bit shyly, Hinata asks, “So, um...are we going to be in the living room, or…?”
Sasuke blinks. “...well, I thought we’d just be in my room. I mean...that’s where my desktop is, and my desk. I have a spare table you can sit at.”
At his words, Hinata’s cheeks flare pink. “Y...your room…?”
“Yeah...is that bad?”
Hinata flounders for a moment. “...no, I...I guess not. Is it really...okay?”
“Yeah...why wouldn’t it be?”
That earns a quick, nervous laugh. “My father would be..f-furious if I had a boy in my room.”
Sasuke can’t stop a snort. “...sorry, I just...really? You’re a senior in high school. It’s not like you’re a kid.”
“N-no, but...like I said, he’s...strict.”
“Well,” Sasuke offers, tone a bit drawling. “I won’t tell if you won’t. I’m not gonna make a move on you, I just want to sit and do homework. Think that’s too scandalous?”
In spite of herself, Hinata giggles. “That...t-that should be fine. Just, um...if he ever asks...we do this in the living room.”
“All right, all right...now, let’s study some biology. In books, not in practice.”
“S-Sasuke!”
“Sorry...couldn’t resist.” This seems like a good idea already!
                                                        .oOo.
This is...really random, but all that came to mind when I read the prompt xD Yay study buddies! Who totally aren't going to end up smitten with each other! Nooo, that would never happen!      :3c      Anywho, that's all I got for tonight. I'm still v drained from my trip, so I better go sleep lol - thanks for reading!      (Also Tumblr peeps, I will reply to comments tomorrow! Just...too bushed to do it tonight, sorry! <3)

Flee or Die
yes, I’m watching the end of s6. Again. And I’m suffering. Again.
When will I ever learn?
We don’t talk about s6 because daaaaamn it’s the most painful thing in the history of ever. Instead of subjecting tumblr to a long series of largely redundant screeching agony (because I have screeched all this agony at tumblr before), I’ve been yelling it all directly at @shixpe and @elizabethrobertajones. Thanks for tolerating my nonsense. :P
*ETA: Okay, I said I wasn’t gonna subject anyone to my s6-related ravings, and then I went and wrote a few thousand words raving over s6 anyway... so I guess I should put it under a cut... Seriously, flee or join me in death. You’ve been warned :P
I am just suffering and trying not to write shouty posts about betrayal and temptation, and how crowley so thoroughly played the role of Devil On Cas's Shoulder all through s6 all because Cas felt the need to protect Dean, rather than letting Dean play Angel On His Other Shoulder. s6 is terrible
elizabethrobertajones yeah :( no one had a good year :P mittensmorgul no. :(
mittensmorgul gah, s6 is like one long burning bridge
mittensmorgul we go from Dean asking Cas to erase him from Lisa and Ben's memories, right to Sam having lost all his memories (again, because of Cas breaking his wall), and then when Cas finally comes back in 7.17, it's without his memories...
Sera Gamble has an amnesia fetish heck even at the beginning of s6, Dean's the one who doesn't know what's what, but only because he'd been deliberately left out of the loop by the end of the season, he's the ONLY one who seems to know what's what mittensmorgul Gah and 6.22 metaphorically shatters Dean's soul as much as Sam's literally...
WHY DO I KEEP WATCHING THIS NONSENSE OVER AND OVER AGAIN?!
shixpe Srsly tho I love imagining Cas' thoughts like yes I like this firey human XD
mittensmorgul YES THANKS AND NOW I'M HAVING AN EXISTENTIAL CRISIS OVER THIS BECAUSE I JUST WATCHED 6.20 AND CAS LITERALLY DID ALL OF THAT FOR DEAN... LIKE ALL OF S6 WAS ///FOR DEAN/// BECAUSE OF THAT ONE MOMENT WATCHING DEAN RAKE LEAVES AND HE'S WILLING TO BURN HIMSELF DOWN TO PROTECT THAT FIERY HUMAN THAT ONE SQUISHY LIL GUY WHO SHOWED HIM HOW TO DEFY DESTINY AND HOW TO HUMAN GAAAAHHHHHHHH *insert the This Is Fine.jpg here*
mittensmorgul thank you for letting me all-caps that directly at you instead of making yet another end-of-s6 all caps shouty post about it :P
shixpe kwahahahaha Cas' tombstone:  ////For Dean////
mittensmorgul UGH. YES. LITERALLY. *cries*
shixpe rofl if asked what Sam and Dean's tombstones would say id hope one of them say "Hell Stinks More Now"
mittensmorgul "Wow, we finally died long enough to get tombstones? Incredible."
shixpe >incredible<
There is ***nothing*** here to suggest that Cas was in any way ***right*** in his choices. The entire narrative condemns him. It’s Cas’s betrayal that metaphorically burns everything down, that “shatters Dean’s soul” metaphorically, and literally crushes Baby, breaks Sam’s wall and literally shatters Sam’s soul into pieces, all the while Cas does his best to prevent Crowley from “cashing in” on their Deal and claiming any of Purgatory’s power for himself.
Flee, or die.
Crowley’s motive all along had been securing his position as King of Hell, and now post 12.12 we have a much clearer insight into his motives, knowing how he earned the job in the first place. So when Cas betrayed him on their deal, he went to the “enemy,” attempting to use Raphael the same way he’d attempted to use Cas all along... to secure his personal power base, potential apocalypse under a godlike Raphael be damned...
Crowley perched on Cas’s shoulder all season long, manipulating him right from the start (that we only see the full scope of in 6.20, so it loses much of its impact early in the season, until we rewatch it a time or 47...).
6.19:  Crowley: Really, Cas? This is getting ridiculous. How many times am I gonna have to clean up your messes?
6.20:
DEAN No, you had a choice. You just made the wrong one. CASTIEL You don't understand. It's complicated. DEAN No, actually, it's not, and you know that. Why else would you keep this whole thing a secret, huh, unless you knew that it was wrong? When crap like this comes around, we deal with it... Like we always have. What we don't do is we don't go out and make another deal with the Devil! CASTIEL It sounds so simple when you say it like that. Where were you when I needed to hear it?
(flashback to Crowley smirking as Cas reluctantly turns his back on Dean raking leaves)
or maybe
CASTIEL If you touch the Winchesters... CROWLEY Please. I heard you the first time. I promise -- nary a hair on their artfully tousled heads. Besides, I think they've proven my point for me. It's always your friends, isn't it, in the end? We try to change. We try to improve ourselves. It's always our friends who got to claw into our sides and hold us back. But you know what I see here? The new God (pointing at Castiel) and the new Devil, working together. CASTIEL Enough. Stop talking. And get out of my sight. CROWLEY Well...Glad I came. You're welcome, by the way. (Crowley heads for the door) You know the difference between you and me? I know what I am. What are you, Castiel? What exactly are you willing to do?
6.21: Crowley lives up to the letter of his bargain while violating the spirit of it, taking Winchester-adjacent loved ones in order to manipulate them... But honestly everyone and their uncle should’ve seen this blatant betrayal coming five miles off. This is Crowley’s standard s6 MO. I mean, did we forget how Crowley promised to return Bobby’s soul after Bobby “loaned” it to him to find Death in 5.21? This was the entire point of 6.04, the lengths Bobby had to go to in order to out-manipulate Crowley and reclaim his soul (which we only find out in 8.19 that Crowley still wrangled into Hell anyway, because that’s the kind of vindictiveness Crowley was capable of back then...).
Not only that, but his ~entire~ deal with Cas was founded on the single stone of Anything But Dean.
CROWLEY We'll need expert help. CASTIEL From whom? CROWLEY From experts, of course. I know of two eerily suited 'Teen Beat' models with time on their hands. CASTIEL No. Not Dean. He's retired, and he's to stay that way. CROWLEY Fine. Then I know of a certain big, bald patriarch I can take off the bench. The point is...They can get us to the monsters. The monsters can get us to Purgatory. I know it.
Not Sam, not Bobby... just Dean. I mean, Cas literally pulled Sam out of the cage for this.
Also, remember back in 6.01 when Dean was first confronted with Samuel’s mysterious resurrection, and this was Samuel’s working theory:
Samuel: We're guessing whatever pulled Sam up pulled me down. So, whatever this is, we're both a part of it.
Doncha just love Samuel’s presumption that he’d been in Heaven before, when Crowley essentially makes it clear that he’d been in Hell all along in 6.20?
Anyway, back to the point. (no i lied, I don’t actually have a point, other than my need to wallow in the fact that s6 was awful for everyone.)
Sam spent half the season soulless. He spent the rest of it struggling with that fact and the repercussions of the terrible things he did without his soul to talk him out of stuff.
Dean spent the early part of the season regretting all of his life choices, and the end of the season paying for all his life choices. I mean, he was left entirely out of the year-long setup to all this trauma, ostensibly to “protect” him and let him be “happy.” And it was never truly happy for him (which he states unequivocally multiple times in 6.01). In the end, he wasn’t even allowed to keep the illusion of happiness. Everything Cas had tried to protect him from ended up landing directly in his lap anyway, and the very act of Cas trying to let him have his “retirement” was what eventually lit the fuse and detonated any possibility of Dean ever having that illusory “white picket fence.”
Because that was never what Dean wanted anyway, but the fact he was pushed into building it only to have to watch it all burn just seems cruel...
Meanwhile, that one act for Cas, letting Crowley lure him away with the promise to stop Raphael without ever having to bring Dean into danger, nearly costs Dean his life several times over.
Dean was unprepared for the Djinn attack in 6.01 (nearly died! but some of his friends and neighbors DID die because of it, and he blamed HIMSELF for it!)
We see the early (sans context) machinations of Crowley’s influence over the Campbells and the hunt for all the Alphas. Dean’s nearly done in by the Alpha Shapeshifter, who we later see Crowley torturing for info on Purgatory.
Dean was turned into a vampire because Soulless!Sam didn’t care and thought it would be an effective way to complete their hunt
Dean’s manipulated into working directly for Crowley ANYWAY via Sam’s connection with Samuel, which Crowley quickly capitalizes on...
Dean’s nearly fed to ghouls by Samuel when he gets too close to Crowley’s Alpha Capturing Operation... which only draws Cas deeper into the lies and manipulation, and further from Dean
Balthazar is unwittingly drawn into Cas’s side-plans to generate additional souls, possibly to “pay back” Crowley for that initial loan of 50k souls (as described in 6.20), when he un-sinks the Titanic and generates-- shocker-- 50k souls in the process... that seems like a remarkable coincidence...
I mean, Balthy was originally brought into Cas’s confidence under the pretense of using the stolen Weapons of Heaven in his fight against Raphael. But after 6.15, it’s clear that even with those weapons, Cas is no match for Raphael, and the threat is only enough to get Raphael to back off for now. The one weapon we did see Balthy use against him in 6.03 only destroyed Raphael’s vessel, after all...
Dean and Sam both almost got abandoned in 1861 while trying to find a way to defeat a problem that arose DIRECTLY from Cas and Crowley’s meddling with the monsters all season long... Eve only came onto the scene BECAUSE OF THEIR SYSTEMATIC ATTACK ON HER MONSTER CHILDREN. And then if that’s not enough, the reason Cas almost couldn’t bring them back was because Rachel discovered Cas’s true plans and called him out on his deception and betrayal. Again, Bobby had to “pay the price” for it all with the “soulonoscopy” to boost Cas’s power.
Dean LITERALLY got bit defeating Eve, and LITERALLY his own blood was the poison that got her... again, because Cas had LITERALLY been “depowered” as a direct result of his own actions...
Then when Cas finally gets his hands on the power he felt he had “no other choice” than to grab for himself, it overrides everything Cas had been fighting for all along. The entire purpose of his sacrifice had been to keep Dean safe, and then the final line of 6.22 renders all of that moot:
“I'm your new God. A better one. So you will bow down and profess your love unto me, your Lord. Or I shall destroy you.“
Thanks, s6. I feel sufficiently destroyed. :P
And that’s what I meant by my comment way back up there somewhere that s6 was basically one long, drawn out burning bridge. It hurrrrrrts. And it’s not until 7.17 that they start building a new bridge. It’s still under construction, and it’s wobbled threateningly a few times since, but it’s still standing. It just hurts every time I rewatch s6, every single time.

9-7 Valkyries’ Summer: Survival Life
Sorry again for the spam.
If you want to blacklist these, you can use either the tag #valkyries summer for just this event, or #xdu event scripts or #xdu scripts
Reminder that these are copied straight from XD Unlimited itself, so any grammatical weirdness, mistranslations, and/or mischaracterizations are not my doing.
Tumblr media
Hibiki Tachibana: "Aaaah..."
Miku Kohinata: "Stop playing with the fan. You still have homework left to do."
Hibiki Tachibana: "Yeah, but I've finished most of it. There's still plenty of time before the deadline."
Miku Kohinata: "What do you mean, most of it? You've still got half left."
Hibiki Tachibana: "Yeah, as of today, I'm halfway finished! That counts as most."
Miku Kohinata: "You don't have anything else you really need to do, so why not finish it up ahead of time?"
Hibiki Tachibana: "Because it's summer, and I'm vacationing! Oh, I know! Let's listen to Tsubasa-san and Maria-san's new song!"
Miku Kohinata: "Really? Ugh, are you sure you'll be okay? Even without me watching over you, your homework still needs doing."
Hibiki Tachibana: "Oh, that's right. You're heading back to visit your family today, right?"
Miku Kohinata: "Yeah, and I was planning on getting an early start."
Hibiki Tachibana: "Hibiki Tachibana's gonna be just fine! You just relax, Miku! It's summer vacation, so you go vacation!"
Miku Kohinata: "All right, then I'll go get ready to head out."
Hibiki Tachibana: "Sounds like a plan! I'll go to the station with you to see you off."
Miku Kohinata: "Thanks, Hibiki."
Hibiki Tachibana: "Being all alone in the dorm sure is boring..."
Hibiki Tachibana: "I guess today is one of those days where everyone is either back home or has other plans."
Hibiki Tachibana: "And I have nothing to do except my homework like Miku suggested."
Hibiki Tachibana: "...Except I reaaally don't feel like doing it."
Hibiki Tachibana: "Maybe I should give Kirika-chan and Shirabe-chan a call..."
Hibiki Tachibana: "Whoa! Hello, this is Hibiki speaking!"
Genjuro Kazanari: "You sure picked up fast."
Hibiki Tachibana: "I was actually just about to make a call myself..."
Genjuro Kazanari: "Good timing, then. We're having a strategy meeting. Head on over to HQ."
Hibiki Tachibana: "Understood!"
Tumblr media
Genjuro Kazanari: "Looks like everyone's accounted for... Elfnein-kun, if you could explain the situation."
Elfnein: "Right. Since the battle the other day, the Gjallarhorn alert has weakened and Noise appearances have subsided."
Elfnein: "We think it's very likely that the Noise won't appear here for a short while."
Genjuro Kazanari: "Right. So you girls can just relax and--"
Hibiki Tachibana: "Oh, hey! If it's all clear here, we'd love to go over and help out Tsubasa-san's team!"
Genjuro Kazanari: "...Are you sure?"
Kirika Akatsuki: "Super sure! If we're all together, we can resolve the abnormality a lot faster!"
Shirabe Tsukuyomi: "Yeah. In that case, I'll go too."
Hibiki Tachibana: "You wouldn't mind, right Master?"
Genjuro Kazanari: "Not at all. Please, rendezvous with Tsubasa's team and help them resolve the abnormality!"
Hibiki Tachibana: "All right!"
Tumblr media
Hibiki Tachibana: "We made it! We're on the desert island!"
Shirabe Tsukuyomi: "Let's first track down and meet up with Maria and the others."
Kirika Akatsuki: "Ooooh! It's just the tropical paradise I heard it was! Pure white sand as far as the eye can see!"
Hibiki Tachibana: "And a bright blue sea!"
Shirabe Tsukuyomi: "Wait, you two are in your swimsuits already?"
Hibiki Tachibana: "Now THIS is the summer I've been waiting for! It won't do to pass up on the fun!"
Kirika Akatsuki: "That's right! We need to get our blood pumping!"
Hibiki Tachibana: "I even secretly brought along a beach ball!"
Kirika Akatsuki: "I got the pool floaties and snorkels ready!"
Shirabe Tsukuyomi: "Kiri-chan, you brought enough for me too?"
Kirika Akatsuki: "Come on, Shirabe! Go get changed!"
Shirabe Tsukuyomi: "I suppose I must."
Tumblr media
Shirabe Tsukuyomi: "Okay, I've changed. But shouldn't we be looking for Maria and the others?"
Kirika Akatsuki: "Well it'd be tough to find them by just wandering at random, and besides..."
Kirika Akatsuki: "The beach offers good visibility to spot things that stand out, so it's logically strategic to stay put!"
Shirabe Tsukuyomi: "That so, huh? Well, I guess we can see the gate back home, so it's easier to meet up here than on the move."
Hibiki Tachibana: "Okay! Now that everyone's in their swimsuits, let's all have a good ti--"
HIbiki Tachibana: "Huh?! Is this the Siren's song that Tsubasa-san and the others mentioned?!"
Shirabe Tsukuyomi: "Noise are coming from the sea!"
Kirika Akatsuki: "And there's a lot of them, too. We need to take them out, and fast!"
Hibiki Tachibana: "Yeah, our summer's on the line, here!"
Kirika Akatsuki: "I'd heard the stories, but they were tougher to fight than I thought!"
Shirabe Tsukuyomi: "I keep getting tripped up in the sand... and the sun's intensely bright!"
Hibiki Tachibana: "Rgh! It looks like more are coming! I'd like to take this elsewhere, but we can't break our perimeter!"
Shirabe Tsukuyomi: "Why are there so many Noise?"
Kirika Akatsuki: "We'll just have to slice and dice the lot of 'em! For the sake of our summer!"
Hibiki Tachibana: "My marine-blue ocean and tropical island resort summer--I'll protect them... With my fists!"
Kirika Akatsuki: "Yeah!"
Shirabe Tsukuyomi: "I don't think this is the time for a heroic speech!"
Tumblr media
Chris Yukine: "You bastards just keep coming one after the other! Anyone not carrying a fragment can buzz off!"
Tsubasa Kazanari: "The Siren's song again! We won't be able to investigate if they keep swarming us in hordes like this!"
Maria: "I hear something else, too. It sounds like there's fighting near the beach! Who on earth could it be?!"
Tsubasa Kazanari: "We'll need to finish off the Noise here before we can check it out. Let's make this quick!"
Chris Yukine: "Trust me, I wasn't planning on letting this drag on!"
Tumblr media
Kirika Akatsuki: "Th-There's too many of them! And my Gear feels so heavy..."
Shirabe Tsukuyomi: "Nothing should have caused our link coefficients to drop, so it must be the sand that's doing all this!"
Hibiki Tachibana: "This isn't the first time I've fought on a sandy beach, but that doesn't make it any easier!"
Hibiki Tachibana: "Kirika-chan, look out!"
Kirika Akatsuki: "That was a close one! I wish we could get away from this sand!"
Shirabe Tsukuyomi: "We're completely surrounded!"
Maria: "You three?!"
Hibiki Tachibana: "Maria-san!"
Maria: "So it was you girls. I heard fighting, so I decided to check it out and--"
Shirabe Tsukuyomi: "Maria! Behind you!"
Maria: "Yaaaaaaah!"
Kirika Akatsuki: "Sh-She's so fast! Her swimsuit Gear really is making a difference!"
Maria: "First things first, let's take care of this cluster of Noise!"
Tumblr media
Hibiki Tachibana: "Haah... haah... Finally! That's the last of them..."
Shirabe Tsukuyomi: "Thank you, Maria. You saved us."
Maria: "Fighting in your normal Gear must have been tough. But anyhow, what are you three doing here?"
Kirika Akatsuki: "Ah, so about that..."
Tsubasa Kazanari: "Tachibana! And Tsukuyomi and Akatsuki? Did you come through the Gjallarhorn gate?"
Chris Yukine: "What are you guys doing here?"
Kirika Akatsuki: "To help resolve the abnormality, of course!"
Shirabe Tsukuyomi: "Elfnein told us there shouldn't be any Noise on the other side for a while, so we came here."
Hibiki Tachibana: "We definitely didn't come here to have fun!"
Chris Yukine: "Oh reaaaally? Then what's that I see?"
Tsubasa Kazanari: "A beachball, pool floaties, snorkels and flippers... Even an inflatable dolphin!"
Hibiki Tachibana: "I, uh... thought we might need those for the, er, investigation... Ahaha."
Chris Yukine: "You guys totally came here to have fun!"
Hibiki Tachibana: "I just wanted to get a LITTLE fun time in!"
Maria: "This is way more than enough for one person. Don't tell me you two were also planning on getting in on this?"
Kirika Akatsuki: "Ummm... It was just a logically strategic decision?"
Shirabe Tsukuyomi: "I told you two we needed to meet up with everyone first."
Kirika Akatsuki: "Shirabe! You don't get to skip out on the blame here! That's no fair!"
Maria: "Shirabe, you can't pretend like Kirika forced you into this. Honestly..."
Kirika Akatsuki: "S-Sorry..."
Shirabe Tsukuyomi: "I'm sorry. I didn't have the willpower to resist..."
Chris Yukine: "Well, you're here, at any rate. And the Noise appear stupid frequently, so be ready to help out."
Hibiki Tachbana: "Of course! That's why we're here."
Chris Yukine: "No, you're here to have a good time..."
Tsubasa Kazanari: "The sun will be setting soon. Let's set up camp. Now that there's more of us, maybe we should get more food."
Kirika Akatsuki: "As in stuff we find on the island?! That sounds fun! But can we wrangle up a proper meal?"
Maria: "Heh. We've learned a thing or two about that."
Shirabe Tsukuyomi: "Hey, that's fishing tackle!"
Chris Yukine: "Here, you guys can help out a bit, too. Just stick the bait on the end of the hook, here..."
Tsubasa Kazanari: "Adults like us don't need to carry snacks around everywhere we go!"
Tumblr media
Kirika Akatsuki: "Wooooow! Talk about the bounty of the sea!"
Shirabe Tsukuyomi: "You literally couldn't ask for anything more fresh!"
Hibiki Tachibana: "You're really good at fishing, Tsubasa-san! I had no idea! Did Kanade-san teach you?"
Tsubasa Kazanari: "Just the basics, really."
Hibiki Tachibana: "And you still did this well. You're amazing!"
Chris Yukine: "She couldn't catch a dang thing at first, though!"
Maria: "Well, she can fish well now, and that's what matters. By the way, Shirabe, that stew smells great!"
Shirabe Tsukuyomi: "I've never gotten to cook with such lavish ingredients. I hope it came out okay..."
Kirika Akatsuki: "Aaah... It's like we're in Heaven. Eating this makes me feel like I might've literally ascended..."
Hibiki Tachibana: "I wish Miku could taste some of this, too..."
Kirika Akatsuki: "Shirabe! What are you gonna make next?"
Shirabe Tsukuyomi: "Next up is sashimi. With fish this fresh, it seems like a waste not to serve some of it raw."
Kirika Akatsuki: "If you're making sashimi, we have to use some of Mom's beloved soy sauce!"
Tsubasa Kazanari: "They brought soy sauce with them, too? Well, lucky us!"
Maria: "This soy sauce is one of the ties we have to Mom."
Chris Yukine: "This meal got fancy all of a sudden. We've just been eating our fish with salt this whole time..."
Maria: "None of us made a real attempt at cooking anything more complex. But we've been pretty tired..."
Tsubasa Kazanari: "Still, having all these fine dishes makes me wish we had some rice to go with it all."
Hibiki Tachibana: "Heheheh... I prepared for just such a occasion! Ta-dah!" [1]
Chris Yukine: "You... You seriously brought rice with you, too?!"
Hibiki Tachibana: "Well you GOTTA have rice! So, is there an outlet here? I brought a rice cooker, too!"
Maria: "There's... no electricity out here."
Hibiki Tachibana: "Wh-Whaaaat?! But what about my rice?!"
Tsubasa Kazanari: "Sadly, it looks like we'll have to give up on that plan."
Hibiki Tachibana: "Aaaaaw..."
Shirabe Tsukuyomi: "Don't worry. We can cook it in this."
Kirika Akatsuki: "A bamboo tube? You can cook rice in one of these?!"
Hibiki Tachibana: "Really?! So I can eat my rice after all?!"
Shirabe Tsukuyomi: "Just leave it to me."
Kirika Akatsuki: "Sitting around a fire with freshly caught seafood and rice... It's like we're all out camping together."
Chris Yukine: "This isn't too different from the real thing. And man, the texture of this fish is just perfect!"
Tsubasa Kazanari: "This seafood broth is exquisite, too. The fresh shellfish impart such a wonderfully unique flavor."
Hibiki Tachibana: "And don't forget the rice!"
Chris Yukine: "You're happy with anything so long as it comes with rice, aren't you?"
Kirika Akatsuki: "I really gotta give you credit, Shirabe! I had no idea you could boil rice in a bamboo tube!"
Shirabe Tsukuyomi: "I saw them do it once on a camping TV show."
Hibiki Tachibana: "Mmm! That was delicious!"
Kirika Akatsuki: "I can't eat another bite..."
Shirabe Tsukuyomi: "My stomach is about to burst..."
Tsubasa Kazanari: "Looks like you overate a bit."
Maria: "In that case, how about taking a quick swim out in the sea?"
Chris Yukine: "Ooh... That sounds good!"
Hibiki Tachibana: "Maaan, I wish we'd thought to bring some fireworks, too!"
Tsubasa Kazanari: "Once this situation is resolved, we can all go do that together."
Hibiki Tachibana: "Yeah! Let's give this our all, then!"
Tumblr media
Tsubasa Kazanari: "That sound--no, it can't be!"
Maria: "It's the Siren's song! Everyone, wake up!"
Chris Yukine: "Attacking first thing in the morning? Ugh, screw these guys..."
Hibiki Tachibana: "Hmm? Wait, what's going on?! I just woke up..."
Kirika Akatsuki: "Yaaaawn, morning already? Lemme sleep a bit more..."
Shirabe Tsukuyomi: "Snap out of it, Kiri-chan. There's loads of Noise!"
Tsubasa Kazanari: "That song is coming from the ocean. You don't think it's coming from underneath the surface, do you?"
Maria: "No time to dwell on it now. First we need to fend off the Noise that are gunning for us."
Chris Yukine: "How dare these guys deprive a girl of her beauty sleep! Hope you punks are ready to pay!"
Chris Yukine: "And that's the last of 'em!"
Shirabe Tsukuyomi: "But there's a second wave inbound!"
Chris Yukine: "Why are there so damn many of them?! What's their deal?!"
Maria: "I can hear the Siren's song again. Which means..."
Kirika Akatsuki: "They're going to keep coming?!"
Tsubasa Kazanari: "Most likely. Maria! Yukine! We'll use our swimsuit Gears to lure the Noise away!"
Chris Yukine: "Got it! Can't let my kohais see me put on a bad show, after all!" Maria: "Right. We'll keep the rest of you safe."
Shirabe Tsukuyomi: "Understood."
Kirika Akatsuki: "Roger that!"
Tsubasa Kazanari: "Here they come!"
Hibiki Tachibana: "I wish our Gears could turn into swimsuits, too..."
Kirika Akatsuki: "Yeah..."
Hibiki Tachibana: "Whew... Things finally calmed down, then? Have you been fighting the Noise like this the whole time?"
Tsubasa Kazanari: "Basically. Without a swimsuit Gear, they're a real pain to deal with."
Kirika Akatsuki: "I'm getting all hot and sweaty, and Igalima keeps slipping in my hands."
Shirabe Tsukuyomi: "Kiri-chan appeared to have the toughest time. Though the sand getting caught in my rollers was rough too."
Hibiki Tachibana: "How can we get our own swimsuit Gears, then?"
Kirika Akatsuki: "I heard something about it coming from mental imagery..."
Hibiki Tachibana: "Yeah, but I've been thinking this whole time about wanting a swimsuit Gear, and nothing's happening!"
Shirabe Tsukuyomi: "Why not, I wonder?"
Maria: "I'm not sure of the exact details, but I was able to transform straight away..."
Chris Yukine: "It happened to me when I was dragged into the sea."
Tsubasa Kazanari: "And it happened for me when I saw Yukine get dragged into the sea."
Kirika Akatsuki: "So it was different for all of you, then..."
Shirabe Tsukuyomi: "It doesn't look like getting it will be so straightforward..."
Maria: "Well, there's no point sitting around and hoping. The rest of us have your backs, so just do what you can."
Tsubasa Kazanari: "I know. Let's take a quick break then get back to investigating."
Maria: "Speaking of which, how about we split up into teams so we can investigate more efficiently?"
Hibiki Tachibana: "You mean split up and do our own searching?"
Maria: "Yes. We have enough wielders, after all. It'd let us cover more ground than grouping all up together."
Chris Yukine: "That's not a bad idea."
Tsubasa Kazanari: "I have no objections, either."
Maria: "Okay, then let's discuss how we'll split up the teams."

[1] "for just an occasion" or "for such an occasion" would sound better
