Transformers: Cyberverse Review (2/2)

So I finally watched cyberverse and figured I'd kill two birds with one stone and do my review while I was at it instead of having to rewatch it later. This ended up being so much longer than I expected and I tried to look back over it to the best of my ability but I wrote these directly after finishing each season so at some very odd hours of the day if anything is worded weirdly sorry about that. Please keep in mind this is my opinion and you might not agree:) Season 3:

Lemme start this off by saying I was so excited to see G1-Esque Laserbeak again but the absolute BUTCHERING of my boy drifts character. I was so sad dude, let him have his redemption arc:( plus Hot Rod, Cheetor, and Shockwave dying?! Not even right. I also lied because episode 5 of this season is the most confusing thing I’ve ever seen. I am so completely lost. How is Hot Rod back? What is even happening? Is that squid thing a Quintessons? Two of which were partially answered. Next episode we find out what happened with Hot Rod and you’ll notice one great detail here that was missing from season 2 THEY EXPLAIN WHAT WAS GOING ON.

 So far the pacing feels a lot better even if the random time skip is a bit odd, BUT WIRL IS HERE AND HE’S GREAT. STUNTICONS well Stunticon, Dead End is great, I love his design even though I had no idea it was him at first. I don’t know if Hot Rod's voice actor had a cold or something while they were recording this but he was just constantly whispering and it made it so hard to take him seriously bc he’d be yelling somebodies name and it just sounded so flat. I didn’t think I’d like Perceptor at first but I ended up liking him a lot, Soundwave as always was great. I figure I’ll have a soft spot for this version for a long time, now if they’d just let him have all his cassettes back.

 As of episode 12, Skywarp has been name-dropped once, and while I think I know which one she is she hasn’t been introduced yet and I’m on my hands and knees absolutely begging rn PLEASE let us have Skywarp. SPOILER ALERT SHE NEVER SAYS ANYTHING. I am devastated, Skywarp has got to be one of my favorite characters so every time I hear his name mentioned anywhere near a show or movie I get straight giddy bc we see Skywarp less than TC which honestly is a feat so you can imagine how sad I was when after being name-dropped AS THE COMMANDER she doesn’t get a single voice line. Finally, get TC and Warp and have them ripped away. L. In other news, have I mentioned that Starscream’s upgrades are the goofiest yet? Because they are. Judge Starscream has got to be the single worst thing to come out of any piece of transformers media like ever.

 When I tell you I gasped when Megatron admitted he mistreated Starscream, never in a million years did I see that coming. I mean part of it is that Screamer got power-hungry, that his ambitions were too large, that he went a little crazy along the way, but part of it was that he was hurt. Does that excuse him deciding his entire world needed to be destroyed? No definitely not. I feel a character study coming along, but this isn’t the time or place so instead, I’LL TELL YOU HOW HYPED I WAS TO SEE ASTROTRAIN AND THE INSECTICONS. Hey, I’ll let you guess which faction is my favorite lol. The rest of this season is straight goofy and it’s mostly filler. Wild Wild Wheel, in particular, is one I want to touch on. It’s surprising how often the media does this but, as hurt as I know I’d be if I was left behind by my team I feel like you’d also have to realize well it’s war and casualties are in abundance. Someone goes missing and you usually have to assume they’re dead.  The last episode was a bit weird but it was alright. In the end, this season wasn't bad at all but I do wish they'd cut it off at episode 18 and said the rest was season 4 or something. 7/10

Season 4:

This season was weird and I loved it and hated it. The first episode was great but the second one dude I’m so sad. I wish Astrotrain had more screen time I feel like he could have been a super cool character but alas he’s the 207th Decepticon gone. They killed the entirety of high command I was clinging to Soundwave and they VAPORIZED HIM. The way he went out was so sick but man you could have let us have at least one. 

 Now to the actual review part. I loved the Dinobots it was a different take on their story and I liked it. Letting them be an actual combiner was cool but Soundblaster destroying literal planets over a beatbox competition is the funniest thing I’ve ever witnessed in my life. The story flowed pretty well honestly, though I almost immediately knew what they were doing when Tarn showed up. The look my mom gave when I screamed “IS THAT TARN?!” was great but I did NOT expect the Megatron bashing they had him do lol. It’s a little hard to compare this season with the others because it's so different but I liked it, it was enjoyable. 6.5/10

  

How my system works:

When I do these reviews I base them on a couple of things 1.) What made it different 2.) How enjoyable is it 3.) How’s the plot, pacing, character designs, etc? So while I might really like a character there’s still a chance I’ll dock points because they didn’t just create a new character altogether instead of just stealing a name.

What makes it different?

Most of the changes they made were good. I loved 90% of the design changes, I even really liked the way they used the plot and what we already know from the original story. As confusing as our initial time skip is, it's not hard to fill in the blanks with any other continuities time on earth. So we skip the stuff we already know and instead get new stuff, which kept me interested! However, this part could have been really hard to understand for new viewers. Their approach to the Quintessons was a tad weird but it worked so I’m not complaining. 7.5/10

How enjoyable is it?

It was pretty good. I liked it and despite them killing off half the characters I liked I never felt like throwing my phone down and not watching anymore. It kept me interested and for the most part, it wasn't way too easy to guess exactly what was gonna happen. The number of characters they’d name-drop just to never use physically hurt me and sometimes I’d get frustrated with how they used certain characters or how they set something up or their weird time skips but so I’d pause it, get up to grab some water or something and get right back to it. Which for me is pretty good. 6.5/10

How’s the plot?  

Despite the plotholes, the plot was good. They made it different but close enough I’d still be able to tell it's Transformers if they took away the name. Sometimes the way they won *cough* cybertroniansunitething *cough* was odd but all in all, it's fine. I thought the parade loop was creative and interesting to watch. The apocalypse part was honestly my favorite but I wish Hot Rod's frustration led to something. You win some you lose some ig. 6.5/10

How was the pacing?

The pacing was ok in most episodes. (I’m looking at you Sea of Tranquility) They managed to bring back the absolute mess I feared season 2 would be so I’m giving them points for that. Again the time skips can be weird but close to every episode BUT SEA OF TRANQUILITY THE BANE OF MY EXISTENCE did a pretty good job closing up those gaps for us. 6/10

How were the character designs? 

I’ve already partially touched on this but it usually needs its own section so without further ado. Two-thirds of Starscream’s upgrades are the worst, most terrible horrifying things and I hate them with a burning passion. His original design however I liked and his voice actor did a great job. I liked almost everyone's designs until the Allspark got involved EXCEPT FOR JETFIRE whose design was just ok. I’m just kinda sad he wasn’t our gentle giant. That and he was really annoying, sorry anybody who liked him. 8/10 

 Overall: I think I have more conflicting feelings over this show than I do Micheal Bay's first TMNT movie, except its none of the low expectations or nostalgia and all mild confusion. This show is… weird, it was interesting and enjoyable despite Hasbro's never-ending fear of new characters. They took an old premise and made it new even if I can never forgive them for Judge Starscream, they kept the character designs reminiscent of G1 but still kept them fresh and I really liked it. I wish they used the Titans and Insecticons more or expanded on the multiverse part and it could have been interesting to see some of the other combiners. They might have had plans to use some of that before the show got canceled but we’ll never know. 

Overall score: 6/10

Watched the first ten episodes of Earthspark since my library system had it on disc. I have… mixed opinions on it. Under a cut for politeness’ sake.

Animation. It’s very hit or miss for me. The flow of movement, particularly during action scenes, is fine and actually quite good imo, but the faces bug me. Not really uncanny valley but there’s still something disconcerting about the faces of the bots. Might be the lack of eyebrows…

The designs themselves are whatever. Soundwave is top tier naturally, Megatron and Bumblebee are okay, everyone else is kinda meh and they should have left Optimus with his mask up. Cheekbones do not work on him.

Something I really like so far though is Dot’s protectiveness of her kids. I saw somebody else say it’s weird for a kids’ show to have the parents coming to the rescue so much and idk what kids think about it, but I like it. Nice change of pace.

Also, I was a little worried at first that they’d defanged Megatron too much but not so. He challenges Optimus and he worries about his Decepticons even when they no longer want to listen to/follow him and I can see why he gets along with Dot - they’re both protectors at their core, even though Megatron strayed from that for awhile.

I’d like to see Megatron’s past explored more, ‘cause g1 Megs was basically standard conquering power hungry bad guy but this Megs, who’s vaguely supposed to be the same guy, seems so concerned with freedom and trying to be fair. Quite a change in tone so I’m curious what all went into that.

As for the Terrans… not really into the concept? Kinda funny tho when Twitch went “dad2!” at Wheeljack and he was like “no thanks!” I do think some kind of younger/newborn bot or something like that may be something that’s needed to help end the war and soothe tensions though, given the slim population of mechs still known to be alive.

I want to see more interaction between the Terrans and the older bots and particularly in parent-child relationships simply because I like the idea of Cybertronians not having kids and therefore not knowing how to interact with them in constructive ways. Idk if that’s happened yet or not, I’ll have to finish the show some day.

Anyway, I currently don’t have Paramount+ and have no plans to get it soon, but maybe I’ll see about it over the summer when my sisters are out of school, in case they want to watch anything on it too.

p.s. my favorite scene (aside from like the whole Decoy episode) is when Bee calls Optimus, gets Megatron, and then asks Megatron for advice about leading. And Megatron’s response is essentially “beat the ever loving shit out of them” lol

Rewatching Transformers G1 S2: Episode 1: Autobot Spike

Yes, this is where the Surprised Ratchet meme image comes from:

This episode has a lot going on including near-death of a human character on screen, body horror/a Frankenstein plot, and some genuinely unsettling scenes mostly made creepy due to the combination of some interesting dialogue/voice acting and typical G1 Quality. 

And Spike shoots Starscream in the ass mid-flight, which is fantastic. 

He also shoots his dad, which is less fantastic. 

Being a horror nerd, I love this episode, so here we go!

Alright, so it opens with Sparkplug trying to create “Autobot X”, which is straight up just a Frankenstein’s Monster of autobot parts. It’s weirdly creepy, and vaguely reminiscent of the infamous Ratchet-Megatron fusion in the Marvel comics.

I want to point out that Sparkplug says “I wanna see what I can do with a lotta spare Autobot parts and some human ingenuity” before the reveal shot above, and that’s horrific if you think about it for more than like, three seconds. 

It also may have been the origins of the MECH plot line in TFP, actually! Very similar body horror type thing going on. Anyway.

It works briefly, but it flips out and has to get shut down. 

Ironhide fires a laser, problem solved, nobody’s worried. They put Autobot X in storage, because surely a rampantly aggressive seemingly sentient pastiche of random Autobot parts is nothing to worry about. It’s fine. 

Wheeljack is like, hell yeah, I’ll help you work on it later. Which is when we get the Surprised Ratchet image, because yeah, I bet Ratchet’s freaked out a little since this thing is made of SPARE AUTOBOT PARTS. 

Then we’re swept immediately into a fight with Megatron, as many Seekers as you can fit in frame at one time, and Soundwave. 

For whatever reason, Bumblebee shows up driving through a bunch of partially blown up missile/rocket components, with Spike in the driver’s seat. Even Spike is like, dude, why are we here? And Bumblebee is just like, I mean, we couldn’t NOT show up. lmao

Unsurprisingly, Bumblebee gets shot-- In alt-mode, with Spike inside. Uh oh. 

Megatron leaves, because Frank Welker can only voice so many characters at once, and our attention is turned to the carnage. 

Ratchet is like, sure, I can fix Bumblebee right up! Meanwhile, Ironhide is like oh god, oh my god, is this how you hold a human??? Is it dead??? Optimus is gonna be pissed. 

So Optimus rolls up like, listen, take him to the hospital, come on. Ratchet lets him in the back of his ambulance mode, and Prowl goes with him so that he can throw his emergency lights on to give the illusion of a police escort, ensuring the drive is even quicker. 

(I miss the days when Prowl wasn’t a total asshole.) 

It cuts pretty quickly to Spike in an operating theatre; Apparently getting shot by alien space lasers isn’t conducive to human health: 

It cuts again to the attending physician standing at Spike’s beside, presumably in ICU although they appear to be in a private room, with Sparkplug on the other side of the bed. 

The doctor says “Hmm, if only there were a way of separating Spike’s mind from his body while we work...” Which, uh, what? What surgeon says that? You can sort of already do that in actual human medicine, it’s called an induced coma. 

But sure, we need exposition here, I get it. The screenplay here is tight. Sparkplug says he has an idea...

Back at the Autobot hangout, things seem fairly chill, considering. 

Ratchet is welding Bumblebee’s ass in alt-mode, while Bumblebee complains about how long it’s taking. lol 

Meanwhile, Wheeljack and Sparkplug somehow have Spike hooked up to a Ghostbusters colander helmet, which will hopefully transfer his mind into the malfunctioning/in stasis Autobot X frame. Yikes. 

It works! Spike is now also Autobot X. We will call him Spike X for short. 

And for some reason, Spike saying “D-Da-ad?” with this faceplate expression is incredibly funny to me, while also being really weird and creepy: 

However, this is only cool for like two seconds, at which point Spike X truly starts to lose his shit. 

It gets real creepy here, with Spike X saying in a very oddly flat inflection “Why? Why did you do this to me? Why?” and it’s pretty wild. There’s even a mild strobe effect for a few frames. 

Sideswipe and Sunstreaker try to help calm him down, but Spike X throws them both across the room. 

Optimus is like, oh shit, we made a giant metal teenager. Stop him, but use low power, because if the Autobot X frame is damaged too much, then Spike’s consciousness may not be able to be returned to his actual human body. 

Note that Optimus says this in a pretty relaxed way, then levels a shoulder mounted cannon straight at Spike X, which is incredibly funny. 

It quickly gets deeply weird and creepy again when Spike X is temporarily able to talk with his dad, and states that “it’s hard to think, like something is telling me to do... bad.... things!” Yiiiiiikes. 

He gets it under control again, apologises to his dad for the outburst (I think it’s OK, Spike), and Optimus says that he’s cool to stay at the base and he’ll be taken care of while his human body heals up. 

However, oh shit, the Decepticons have found out that Spike now has an Autobot frame-- And they know he’s unstable. 

Starscream tries to roast him, but Megatron’s like, shut up nerd, we’re gonna make Spike X turn against the Autobots! It’s a good plan, I’m serious! 

Back at the Autobot base, Ratchet is still welding Bumblebee’s ass, and Bumblebee is still complaining. Wheeljack hooks up Spike X with some network television, and he’s watching... Frankenstein. Because the six year old kids who are the intended audience of G1 may not be familiar with the source material for this episode’s plot, I guess, which is fair. (Frank Welker nails it here as Dr. Frankenstein, but that’s unsurprising, because he always nails it. I think he’s also voicing Frankenstein’s Monster, but I haven’t checked the credits.)

Obviously, this isn’t a great thing for Spike X to be watching at this particular moment, so he freaks out again. 

Wheeljack and Sparkplug come running, and somehow Sparkplug is covering ground faster than Wheeljack. It’s fine, don’t worry about it. 

Ratchet’s progress on welding Bumblebee’s ass is interrupted by Spike X breaking through the wall and seemingly flying away. lmao 

They just sort of stand there, like, well, we lost him, I guess. 

Bumblebee is like, alright, gonna go get my boy. 

So he drives out of this massive crater, and Ratchet is like, wait! Your radio transmitter still doesn’t work. (Apparently their radio transmitters are located in their asses. Fascinating.) 

Spike X sits on a cliff and says “what a drag”, which, yeah. Being a Frankenstein space robot would be cool if not for the immense psychological damage this is absolutely causing. 

However, he also calls himself a “walking garbage can” in a completely genuine put-out tone of voice, which absolutely sells that this is a teenager in a giant robot body and I laughed, I won’t lie. 

Some of Megatron’s cronies locate him and hold his position. 

At the same time, Bumblebee shows up and tries to talk Spike X down from a random destructive rampage. 

He throws Bumblebee off the cliff! And Megatron’s squad is rolling up. (Well, flying up, anyway.) Uh oh! 

Spike X is like, hell yeah, bring it. More ass to kick. And it turns out his arm mounted cannon works, because he shoots Starscream directly in the undercarriage and says “YEAH, MAN!” and it’s so genuine. 

This is the perfect reaction to being a teenager in a giant robot body and just suddenly being able to shoot lasers and kick ass. Look at how happy he is, that he just shot Starscream in the butt mid-air. It’s awesome.

Unfortunately, the Seekers do actually beat him up, although Spike X puts up a good fight. 

Megatron then takes advantage of his further weakened state, and swoops in to pitch a classic “Join Us” speech. Spike X calls him “Megacrumb”, which is probably acceptable because he’s absolutely concussed by this point. 

Megatron is willing to overlook this for the sake of teaming up. 

Bumblebee eavesdrops, and drives away-- But Spike X gives Megatron a handshake, and agrees to “make them pay”. Oh shit! 

For some reason, Optimus and Ironhide are back at the rocket facility to watch a launch. Because I guess whatever, this whole situation is chill, let’s go watch rockets? IDK 

But either way, Optimus roasts the inferior quality of human technology, while Bumblebee just drives up on site despite Military Police levelling sniper rifles at him in order to report that Megatron is taking advantage of Spike X’s inability to think clearly. 

Optimus says “I feared something like this might happen”, which, if that were the case, why not take actions to prevent it, maybe? Not the strongest Optimus episode. 

To be fair though, Ironhide transforms and is already driving off before Optimus even gives the order to roll out, so I guess Ironhide either really wants to kick some ass or cares slightly more about Spike X’s wellbeing. He has no dialogue here, so we can only guess. 

They get there, with even more Autobots who showed up at some point in the rapid scene cuts here, and Spike X is super unhinged-- Charging his weapons, he starts speaking in a more strained and angry way, and engages the Autobots! 

He hits Optimus with what appears to be a chest laser? It’s hard to see. But it’s super effective: 

Optimus pleads with Spike X to calm down, but Spike X straight up pulls MEGATRON IN GUN MODE out of his sub-space and shoots Optimus directly in the faceplate. Damn! 

The Seekers and Soundwave drop in, and start rapid firing on all the Autobots present. 

We get some great shots of Megatron in his gun alt-mode as he tries to convince Spike X to keep attacking. Optimus and Bumblebee hide behind cover, attempting to bring Spike X to his senses long enough to disarm him. 

Suddenly, Wheeljack and Sparkplug roll up; Sparkplug attempts to talk some sense into Spike, too. 

Optimus and Bumblebee are at a loss; If they take out Spike X, the damage might take him out for good. 

However, Sparkplug fails in his efforts to talk to Spike X; He SHOOTS HIS DAD AND KNOCKS HIM OFF THE CLIFF. 

Can you imagine if they put an ad break here? lmao 

Luckily, he has like, a claw machine arm, and he catches his dad before he becomes a human smoothie. 

This shocks Spike X badly enough that while he still has Megatron in gun mode, he takes a few pot shots at the Seekers and the Decepticons decide it’s time to bounce, so Megatron bails too. 

He apologises for almost killing his dad, his dad is like hey no beef man, and it cuts to them in the hospital: 

Sparkplug takes his son’s body back to the Autobot base (that sounds worse than it is), and they prepare to transfer him back into his body. 

What’s extra funny here is that he nervously laughs and says “Hope you fixed this thing up good, Ratchet!” And Ratchet says absolutely nothing. Not a word. 

It’s a success! Dad and son hug, totally not even addressing anything that happened this whole episode, because that’s a job for a therapist. 

Ratchet, who continues to not really care about any of this, tells Wheeljack “You know, I could probably repair that mess, but I think it’s best that I don’t.” (This is a play on what Wheeljack said earlier in the episode when he offered to help Sparkplug fix up Autobot X to begin with.) 

I love how tired Wheeljack looks. LOL

Spike, now recovered, leaves us with a great question to close out the episode: “I wonder what it’d be like for a robot mind to be transferred... to a human!” 

Depending on what kind of kid you were, his question was either imagination fuel for fun humanformer ideas, or was a blatantly bad question indicating he learned nothing and providing nightmare fuel trying to imagine one of the Autobots losing their shit in a human body the same way Spike lost his shit while inhabiting Autobot X. 

Anyway, great episode! 10/10 Scary, funny, creepy, Starscream got shot in the ass by a teenager. 

Transformers: Prime playlists!

Bumblebee Radio

This is a collection of songs that I think Prime in Disguise Bumblebee would love! (”Prime in Disguise” as in Bumblebee in TFP + RiD.) I put this together mostly with RiD in mind...thinking that Bumblebee might have found these songs during his first time on Earth with Team Prime, and then come back to them later as an adult leading the Bee Team. Inspired by ’Bee’s love for Westerns, upbeat music, Rear Axle, and fun—as well as by Miko’s music influence, Bumblebee’s chiptune-like buzzing, and Bumblebee’s overall personality and character. Sadly, there are few songs I found that unfortunately are not on Spotify, so I can’t add them to the playlist. They’re on YouTube though: “Clap Your Hands” by Owl City, from Everybody’s Golf “Halcyon” demo by Owl City “Ridiculously Happy” demo by Owl City (Btw Matthew Parker also added his own lyrics to this song if you’re interested in that version)

My Buddy (’Bee and Raf)

As implied, this is a playlist focused on ’Bee and Raf’s pure, wholesome friendship...one of my favorite parts of TFP that I wish had more screentime! I would say this playlist is mostly fluff with a tiny bit of angst. Some songs were added because they fit Prime in the moment...others were added because they made me think of RiD, or even post-RiD years later...when Bumblebee and Raf missed their absent buddies (because as far as I know, neither show really addressed the differences between Cybertronian and human life cycles and I can’t help but imagine how much of an impact that would have had on those boys). I haven’t finished RiD so I honestly don’t know what happens to Bumblebee, or how that might affect this playlist, but I’ll worry about that when I get there. :) ~

Team Prime

Since this is my master playlist for Team Prime, you’ll likely hear songs from Bumblebee’s playlists in here too. My absolute favorite song in this playlist is “Spark” by Matthew Parker. IT FITS TFP SO PERFECTLY IN EVERY WAY. One part makes me think of Scrapheap, another reminds me of Bumblebee’s buzzing...and with a title like that, and the lyrics so very reminiscent of Transformers: Prime, I almost wonder if MP is a Transformers fan himself.... ~

Soundwave

When I learned that Aligned Continuity Soundwave had previously been a gladiator in the Pits of Kaon, I threw this playlist together in like two days...that is how INSPIRED I was for this. A lot of the music in here was new to me, but I absolutely love the story that they tell!

Fitting to TFP Soundwave’s character, I would say this playlist is a mix of dark and fierce with quiet and chill.

It’s also a mix of pre-TFP, during-TFP, and after-TFP Soundwave. From Pit gladiator to Megatron’s eyes and ears to Shadowzone lurker...a lot of the music can fit multiple parts of his life and I really love that.

I’ve been listening to this a lot lately because it’s a really good playlist for when you need to get things done / feel invigorated in a relaxed-and-ready-but-not-stressed way. These are also the songs I write Soundwave fics to. :)

Arcee Songs

Finally, here are few songs that remind me of Arcee! “Don’t Let Me Down” by the Chainsmokers featuring Daya ^^^ P.S. This is the AMV that introduced me to this song, and I thought you might enjoy it too. Heads up though, it has some blurry / shaky camera effects if that bothers you. I wrote my fic “Promise” to this song. :) It really makes me think of the “Orion Pax” episodes and how the promise Arcee made way back in Sick Mind (“Ratchet, I would lay down my life for Optimus. Anytime, anywhere.”) was ultimately fulfilled in Orion Pax Part 3, when she zoomed through the Space Bridge and threw herself straight at Megatron, tackling him before he could kill Optimus, despite the fact that Megatron is like three times her size. “Walk with Me” by Acrion I can’t fully explain this, but I’ll try. For some reason, this song reminds me of Scrapheap. I think it might be because the synth instruments have an airy, delicate, snow-like feel to them? Also maybe because the title “Walk with Me” makes me think of how Optimus and Arcee were stranded together, and she really wanted to get out of the Arctic, but he called her to stay with him...and even though Arcee has a tendency to ignore what other people say and just zoom off on her own, that day she decided to stick with Optimus...and ultimately, that probably saved her life. “Saviour” by Lights

@confusedcriminal this has been in my inbox forever and i forgot about it halfway thru compiling an answer oops! but inspiration for SNAP taken from outside of transformers canon would, most obviously, be the entirely of magical girl anime. i legit scrolled through TVTropes for a long time doing research on stereotypical episodes, character types, etc just so i could really capture the aesthetic. i’m not basing it on any anime in particular, although the classic Sailor Moon and PMMM and even some Pretty Cure had a lot of good tropes for me to steal.

another one is sort of the nature of ~political discourse i see between kids online these days. SNAP revolves around four groups of kids working to better the world but violently disagreeing on how that should be done. it’s not an inspiration i started out with (especially because i avoid all sorts of the disk horse like the plague) but it became an apt comparison as i kept working on the story.

a solid character! it sounds like Sky Raider is a lot like Sky Striker with the addition of some confidence and security

it sort of depends on the person’s size, how worn/physically tired they are, and what materials their self repair is drawing from. a mech with a lot of dings and scrapes will have their self repair systems working harder and thus “run out” of what they’ve eaten quicker, whereas someone in perfect health who isn’t moving that much will only need general minor upkeep. as for how much they can eat at once, the fuel tanks and material stockpiles someone has will vary by their size and frame. a seeker, for instance, has large fuel reserves for their large energy demands because it’s stored in their wings, like real planes! their material stockpiles are smaller though because flightframes carrying around more weight in the form of eaten food is sort of counterintuitive. the average grounder and toolformer will have proportionally larger material stockpiles, flightframes and spacers and aquatics will have proportionally smaller, and beastformers will have somewhere in between, usually erring larger. eating too much for any one of them will result in lethargy and nausea, loss of appetite for a good while, perhaps physical pain from overstressed tanks, and if necessary purging/spitting up food. doing this over and over can damage their internal forges and repair systems, and lead to self repair tacking excess materials onto places that really don’t need them, like the flash of overmolded stuff, which can cause lumps, compromised welds, and even shrapnel knocking around in the internals. they don’t really have the equivalent of fat storage like organics, at best they get thick and malformed armor.

all that said, to answer your question! yes they could eat more to go longer between meals, as long as they don’t push it and eat more than they’re physically capable of holding. also, it’s pretty normal to get physical materials within liquid fuel. silted energon mentioned in the above link and “protein shakes” are a quick and easy way to get all their “food groups” in one form, and some mecha live exclusively off of these

oh this is really really good! backstory and everything! also gotta love a good FMAB reference *chefs kiss* i don’t know if i have a place for Springload in my current plotline, but this would fit perfectly as one of the accidental alternate timelines that Skywarp sometimes falls into, so i’m gonna tuck this in my back pocket for later. i am however hesitant to use Aboriginal culture as i am definitely not Aboriginal nor even Australian and don’t want to disrespect them. at the very least i’d have to ask some Aboriginal people, but i really don’t think it’s my place to use anything from the Dreamtime, especially without explicit permission

yes he can, among a lot of other befuddling supersenses! the Lenses manifest mostly as augmented sight, which is already confusing enough to handle, but his powerset is more expansive. on his character sheet i describe it as “perception so acute he can predict what an opponent will do next”, and that bleeds into hearing as well, even hearing thoughts. he has a lot of work to do to figure out how to operate without a migraine, made more difficult by the way Rumble and Frenzy just refuse to cooperate

as for swimming aids, i think soundwave is one of the ones who can swim safely? i think? i talk about swimming in this dump here. most of the heroes can. his tentacles probably would make some decent swimming aids actually, although it’s unlikely to come up because there aren’t exactly many places to swim on Cybertron

I kinda just wrote each thing after each episode so I won’t forget much.

I’m writing what I remember from each episode

🚨SPOILERS AHEAD🚨

Episode 1: Elita is cool as ever, freeing Decepticons and pulling out “Freedom is the right of all sentient beings” on Jetfire when he was questioning why she wanted to free them.

And then Steeljaw :( He was in cassette mode when they were hurting him. Makes me sad thinking about it. If Blaster is going to make an appearance, I hope Steeljaw will be with him.

Also, I need to know what’s up with Megatron having Ultra Magnus’s head on his table and just talking to him like a normal conversation.

There’s a happy Red Alert moment when he talks about how happy he is to have someone on their team who can fly. I’m calling for a Red Alert and Jetfire friendship.

Megatron acknowledges that Elita is a good leader and saying she could’ve been leaderbof the Autobots instead,. He may have started a war but he still knows what’s good.

The bots at Section 12... I loved them, they were so nice to Megatron and were admiring him a lot. It’s easy to tell it hurt him very much to have to “sacrifice” them for the project. I’m pretty sure all of us were sad. Those three bots were very nice.

Episode 2:

Elita is once again acknowledged by Megatron she is a good leader. He even called her Ariel. I’m wondering if we’ll see the past between them.

When Megatron put them in the cylinder thingies, the Decepticons the Autobots frees the first episode came to save them.

The bot even said “Til all are one”

And Skyfire... this huge dude really did just fall against the glass wall while they were trying to escape all stealth mode.

Luckily Skytread let them escape. It was funny when he asked one of them to punch cause Chromia was like “on sight, bro” and went for it. Like I love Chromia. :D

We also get to see our bots on the Ark again! And we get to see the mercenaries too.

We get to see conehead seekers again dudes! And this is my first time seeing Doubledealer on the screen(might be his first time? I honestly don’t know)

What’s with the gray colored Bumblebee, Wheeljack, and Hound? But yet again, it could just be reusing the same models.

Where’s tiny man Prowl? Where’s Ratchet?

When G. Bumblebee said “Where’s the ugly looking one?”, I was like “sir, you looked in a mirror lately?”

He thinks Megs is dead so now he’s leader.

Now Prime and Megatron are stuck in a room together, and now they’re talking. Megatron’s got a girder in his chest and he slowly dying.

Then Starscream starts talking shit to Megs and when he’s done talking about how he’d be a better leader, he says “What’s your argument?”

Oop bots be out here calling Megatron a Quintesson and he’s offended. Quite hilarious

Starscream is really taking command and tossing Barricade aside. Starscream I love you but push him again and I’ll fight you.

So now something happened to the Nemesis ship, or perhaps it was the Ark.

Episode 5: Alpha Trion and Sky Lynx!! Sky Lynx wants to be a Prime too.

So the Autobots are in the Dead Universe. Sky Lynx is still alive and can apparently hear all.

Andddd he’s got some spiritual power and talking to Optimus now.

Sky Lynx is now humbled, I think he’s gonna join the Autobots.

So Megatron alive and he’s boutta pimp slap him.

GALVATRON?! where’d he come from?!

Sky Lynx is really making sad.

And now Galvatron doing the same spiritual thing to Megatron.

Alright, here we go, back into the rambling!

Optimus my dude you’re making one heck of an assumption thinking Red’s hiding in the city. Sure, you’re right, but what if he had found a little cave to hang out in? A little hole in the ground? Secret entrance to your bunker hidden behind a bush SINCE APPARENTLY YOU HAVE THOSE.

Giant robot gets caught stealing a car, more news at 11.

Also just like, it’s not the giant robot that gets this dude, it’s the fact the giant robot turned into a car and drove off.

Ok, what I want to know is how the frick-fracking heck did Starscream know Red would drive down that alley and stop beside this building so he could be hidden and call Red inside and close the door just before the other Autobots drove down this very same alley? Starscream’s just got the power of plot convenience on his side, huh?

Ugggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, this situation. I hate this situation so much, Starscream saw the entire situation with Red and the Autobots from earlier, he knows that right now Red doesn’t trust them, and he takes advantage of the situation and manipulated Red into helping him. Like he acts like he’s listening to Red and is like “yeah, I totally get it” and plays into Red’s delusions and encourages them to manipulate him and it’s just. It’s a gross situation. It really is.

Starscream why for the love of all that’s good in this world do you have lips here???

Ok, let’s talk about this bit.

So we’ve got Wheeljack and Smokescreen going out to look for Red (joke’s on them though since he’s currently sneaking into the bunker) and it’s just like…are they only having Wheeljack and Smokescreen going out to look? The two person team is a good idea since a large group would just go badly like earlier, but you still need more than just Wheeljack and Smokescreen, especially since Red’s at risk of having his circuits explode. Maybe I’m wrong and they have more Autobots out looking, but later on I’m pretty sure we see that the rest of the Autobots in this episode are still at the bunker, meaning Smokescreen and Wheeljack are the only ones looking for him. I get why they had to go back to the bunker and stop searching for Red for a moment, but then only sending 2 bots out to look for him again when he could literally die??? What the heck is up with that???

Anyways, it’s dumb and if it wasn’t for the fact Red snuck back in, he might have been toast. The Autobots really need to figure out a better way of dealing with this stuff.

Ok, let’s talk about this bit. Mostly, about how the Autobots haven’t learned anything from the last time they talked with Red. Optimus: Red, you need help. Hoist: Let me fix you. Yeah, because continuously saying that stuff worked so well the last time you talked with Red. Ok, yes, Red does need help, but at this moment and just like earlier, he doesn’t believe them. He’s firmly set in the belief that the Autobots are going to hurt him due to his paranoia running rampant without with logic chips working, so literally they could repeat what they’ve been saying all day long and it’s not going to convince him. To try and convince him that they just want to help like that would be like trying to convince someone that the sky is actually neon green just by saying that over and over again with the sky in full view, it’s just not going to work.

Now [cracks knuckles] let’s talk about this bit. Starscream was urging Red Alert to shoot at the Autobots, after all, he’s got the Negavator, he could do it now and they’d get away, but what Red does is he shoots the bridge. He shoots it and says “that was a warning! Stay away!” and you guys, he sounds so scared. Because that’s the thing here, this entire time, Red’s been scared. He believes that the other Autobots, his allies and potential friends, are going to hurt him if he lets them, so he’s been running, he’s helping steal the Negavator to prove to the Autobots that he’s “just as good as they are” because if he can prove that then they won’t want to get rid of him, right? He’s been scared this entire time, but even when he’s convinced that the others are going to hurt him and has the perfect opportunity to do something so they can’t hurt him, he doesn’t. He just fires a warning shot and tells them to stay away, yelling at them to keep their distance because he doesn’t want to hurt them. The only time Red did something potentially violent during this entire mess was when he shoved past Inferno and Hoist, and that was because he was backed into a corner and surrounded and felt like there was no other option. Despite everything that’s happened, despite how afraid he is, Red still doesn’t want to hurt anyone.

(Listen, I just have a lot of feelings about this, ok?)

Optimus. Optimus, my dude, my man, why the heck are you pointing your gun at Red when you’re trying to calm him down??? Someone, please, for the love of all that’s good in this world, please teach the Autobots how to handle mental health situations properly.

Honestly I’m starting to think that no one can see the Autobot and Decepticons logos unless it’s plot convenient. First we had Soundwave at the beginning just hanging out, and now we have Grapple, who’s Autobot insignia is in plain sight of the Decepticon right next to him, just hanging out until he can get the drop on them. Smh.

Honestly I have no idea how Starscream shooting Red with his Nullray literally fixed his logic chips but go off I guess, weirder things have happened. It could have just been a temporary thing too I guess, and then Red just got fixed up properly later, honestly who knows, this is never mentioned again, I’m pretty sure we only see Red once more in Blaster Blues, so who the heck knows.

Starscream’s just full out panicking because Red said he set the Negavator to self-destruct and while Megatron thinks he’s bluffing Starscream’s spent like the last few hours with Red so he’s just like “umm. You sure? You really sure because I’m not.”, lol.

I repeat, this is literally just the Red Alert Suffers Episode, F.

This next bit just seems a bit wonky to me? Like it feels forced. Red: Inferno, save yourself, I don’t deserve to be an Autobot. [Inferno catches some falling pipes from landing on Red] Red: Thanks! Inferno: What are friends for, Red? Considering the whole ordeal Red has been through, what he did when he couldn’t think clearly, I’m not surprised he’s feeling unworthy of being an Autobot. Like he’s been through a lot and it’s taken it’s toll on him, the guy’s seriously going to need a mental health day after this. But when Inferno saves him he’s just like “thanks! :D” and it just feels like a major flip from how he just was. To me, it would have made more sense if he said “why would you do that?”, which would have made more sense for him as well as allowing for Inferno to have the same response. That’s just me though.

I like the happy ending feel of the episode, don’t get me wrong because I do love a ending where everything works out in the end, but also this really isn’t the end of the events for Red. He still needs to recover, get checked over to make sure there isn’t any damage or anything, and then begin to process the events of the episode. He literally spent the majority of a day, if not two days (honestly who knows, it looks like the same time of day during the entire episode) dealing with the delusion that the other Autobots were out to get him and then being manipulated by a Decepticon during all of that. That’s not something you can just brush off and forget happened, so while I like how it looks like a happy ending, it’s not the end for Red, so I guess it’s just a little bitter-sweet for me.

Ok, that’s everything! Man, this became a very, very long post, lol. Honestly this is one of my favorite episodes and while it has its flaws and things it could have done better, I still love it.

that look that anya gave to clarke before they fell into the mario carts was everything? she was saying bitch what the fuck did you just get me into? speaking about the mario carts....reapers are connected to mount weather?!!! what tf is going on? but im glad they actually took this plot point some where and did just put it in for the aesthetics

Isen:

    There’s actually a few things on my mind this week when it comes to Isen. First of all is his reluctance to be involved, which isn’t new and is actually something I’ve talked about before, but oh well. The second is his ability. I have also mentioned this before, but Isen’s ability has always seemed pretty vague to me, which is surprising considering that he’s one of the main characters and we’ve seen it a good amount of times.

    Anyway: his reluctance to be involved with any of the hierarchy drama. Isen is, at this point, notorious for wanting nothing to do with Arlo and his drama. Though he’s being more straight-forward with this currently, Isen has always displayed this. At the beginning of the comic, Isen was hesitant about investigating John for Arlo. And there was also that time when Arlo made Isen head of the newspaper, despite Isen not wanting the job. Also when Remi became a superhero, Isen was kind of dragged along and resisted participating (kind of weird example if I’m honest). These are some quick examples, but there are more. I’m just kind of lazy tbh. Anyway, recently, Isen has been vocalizing his discomfort even more. The best example of that is probably episode 164 where Isen directly calls Arlo out for not only involving Isen in things he wants nothing to do with, but also for involving others. I talk about the nature of that conversation, and how it highlights the character differences in Isen and Arlo, in my episode analysis for episode 164. Anyway, Isen has a big issue with this and explains this to Arlo.

    This theme of wanting to be left out of drama isn’t exactly specific to Isen, though. It’s a pretty common theme for people to be pissed off because they’re being forced into situations, usually by Arlo. Seraphina experienced this a little near the beginning of the comic when Arlo brought her along to turf wars even though at that point she’d stepped down from being queen. Elaine tends to experience this often, as well, though not exclusively with Arlo, whenever she is involved because of her healing ability. The big example is actually John, however. John has stressed many times that he just wanted to be left out of the hierarchy to all of the other characters, especially Arlo. This is his “reason” for taking down the school’s hierarchy. John didn’t want anything to do with the hierarchy, but when he couldn’t stay apart from it any longer, his remaining option to not be a part of the hierarchy was to destroy it.

    My point is, that if Arlo keeps forcing people into situations and responsibilities that they either don’t want or aren’t ready for, he’s going to have a real issue on his hands, like what happened with John. He does realize this, however, which we found out after he was dethroned and was reflecting on his interactions with John. Regarding Isen, I think that there’s a possibility Isen will either fail Arlo or turn on him (hopefully teaming up with Cecile, but we’ll keep our fingers crossed for that one). Isen’s been too vocal about his dislike of being involved with things (wording?) to continue to go along with it. Even though he is a very temperate character and doesn’t usually act up, I don’t think this trait alone will solidify his loyalty to Arlo. That also wouldn’t be utilizing his character’s potential in the current storyline, and the plot is probably the most detailed and worked on aspect of UnOrdinary. The thing about all of this is, Arlo can’t exactly just leave people alone when they want to be left alone because all of his decisions are made on the behalf of the school and if he can secure the school’s well-being at the expense of putting more pressure on a singular person, he’s obviously going to do that. This is what makes Arlo’s situation so complicated. There is no “correct” answer. Arlo is involving Isen because he needs his expertise to investigate characters like John and now Terrence. Nobody else would be as effective as Isen, which is why Arlo turns to Isen. There isn’t any way for Arlo to totally win.

    Anyway, like I said, I think that Isen will reach his breaking point relatively soon and Arlo is going to suffer from that. Whether it’s betrayal or not. This idea of forced involvement really involves both of these characters so any changes in their dynamic as it is right now will really affect the storyline, I think. We’ll just have to look out for this, however. 

    Their dynamic in this episode, though, is a bit too comedic to support any type of breaking point between the two, which makes me uneasy.

    Now, let’s move on to the second topic of Isen’s section: his ability. Isen’s ability “Hunter” is one of my personal favorites. Mimicking a “hunter,” Isen has a set of skills that help him to track down and take down his targets. The list of skills is listed on the UnOrdinary Wiki as follows:

Targeting

X-Ray Vision (involving people) (aka when Isen detects location/heartbeat)

Enhanced Strength

Enhanced Speed

Telescopic Vision (Passive (?))

Enhanced Precision (similar to Targeting)

Enhanced Hearing

    These are more of defensive traits, so here’s a bit of description on his offensive ability from me:

Built-up/wound-up punch: “He builds up his power into one punch, which, when let loose, is appallingly effective. His ability probably multiplies the force of his initial build-up, releasing when Isen’s fist hits his target.” -(my episode analysis of episode 126)

Visible “Target” on opponent: (Targeting from above, but used in a more offensive way)

“Isen’s general fighting style is a one-hit K.O. system. He attacks them with the strong attack, leaving his opponent weak, then rushes in for the “kill,” a kind of animalistic instinct… His method doesn’t require much strategy or stamina. It is efficient and precise. Strike to take down.” -(my analysis for ep 126)

Isen’s offensive is strong enough to hold up in a fight against Blyke (before Blyke started to level up) because in one of the first episodes, they have an ongoing battle over Isen’s pen that neither wins. This puts Isen’s offensive at relatively high (because Joker’s obvious power advantage didn’t really show this off when Isen and John fought)

    Anyway, there’s the base of Isen’s power and kind of what we already know about it. But in this episode, we get to see it again, like I said before, it’s always kind of fascinating to me whenever we get to see Isen’s power. His is one of the more interesting ones in the comic by far. It’s animalistic nature paired with human mechanics creates an interesting blend that we don’t see in any other character really. The idea of Isen’s power is so alluring to me for some reason. I don’t know. I’m not really going anywhere with this lmao. Anyway, we learned a few things about Isen’s ability in this episode that we didn’t know before.

    One: Isen does not have the passive ability to sense people/auras like John is theorized to have (this isn’t canon, right?). This isn’t anything surprising seeing as John’s ability is literally called Aura Manipulation, but it’s pretty exaggerated in this episode that Isen really needs to activate his ability to be able to sense people, even having to close his eyes, but the eyes part might be more about the execution of his ability, which is my third thing.

    Two: Isen can sense people!! Lol this might seem a bit redundant after my last point, but this is something new from him that I haven’t really noticed before even though we’ve technically seen it before. In episode 124, near the end of the episode, we have a scene where Isen is running around the school scanning through walls and people looking for Seraphina. He is technically “sensing” people and is even able to identify them as not Seraphina, so obviously he has some way to distinguish people. This makes Isen almost like a walking Marauders' Map, for lack of a better explanation. I’m not really sure how to go deeper into this because I’ve never really been all that confident in talking about the UnOrdinary Characters’ powers, so I’ll just leave it here that I think Isen being able to sense/find people is really cool.

    Three: Echolocation. This is something really new to this episode. In episode 175 (this episode lol), Isen is shown mentally standing in a black void/abyss along with Sera and Arlo with puddles like ripples around each character’s feet, when he activates his power to try to sense anyone else in the room. This visual is very similar to how bats, and other animals, use echolocation to “see.” Echolocation is, “the location of objects by reflected sound, in particular that used by animals such as dolphins and bats,” according to the Oxford dictionary. If Isen is truly using echolocation, then he locates people by soundwaves, which would make sense considering that sound seems to be the thing Isen is usually shown to be involved with (wording was bad but idc). I do think that this detail is a bit weak in comparison to echolocation because there have been times where Isen has sensed/tracked people where it would have been difficult to rely upon sound, like the school or the mall, but if his hearing is really that enhanced, it could still work. I’m also up for looking for things besides sound that Isen could be sensing with his ripple thing. I know I labeled this as echolocation, but it’s very possible he uses a more supernatural trait to utilize these. I just liked the idea of Isen having echolocation if I’m honest. I found this whole concept interesting because of the animal ties and Isen’s ability being named “Hunter.” I also might be tempted to look into bats specifically in the future if we get more details on Isen’s ability that make it worthwhile. I want to compare the two, but not if it’s unprompted. 

    Terrence:

    We get some new information about Terrence in this episode and it is as follows:

Isen would put Terrence around a 2.4 ability-wise

Terrence only started attending Wellston at the beginning of the year

    Along with this, we also get some less straight-forward, but just as meaningful, information. Isen says, “So the invisible guy at the mall… That was him too?!” which from a storytelling standpoint basically confirms that it was in fact him. This quote would not be included if it were not correct because it would only add confusion if it were incorrect (which is its possible intent, but I’ll talk about that in a second). Another quote from this episode was Arlo’s quote, “Then he, or whoever he’s working for… has some sort of fixation on hightiers.” Because of the same reasoning from above, this basically confirms that Terrence is working for somebody or else it would be a very random thing for uru-chan to include in the comic especially since there is no evidence for the characters to even suspect that Terrence is working for somebody. Same thing with Sera’s quote, “I’m almost certain that… Terrence is connected to my ability-loss.”

    But, like I said, there is a possibility this is all a juke by uru-chan to get us to believe these things so she can successfully trick us and reveal that Terrence has been fighting EMBER this whole time or some shit, but I don’t think that is likely because if that were true, I feel uru-chan would have stressed this Terrence and EMBER connection even more than she has already. But this is still a possibility, though I will be ignoring it in this post. Because that would be just awful. 

    Anyway, now that that’s all out of the way and we are caught up, I don’t want to waste my time talking specifically about these things because they’re either too small of details or I’m not getting inspired because of them. The only interesting thing that we really learn this episode is that Terrence transferred to Wellston at the beginning of this school year (which is around when the first episode takes place), but I’m not sure what to think about that so I’m going to give it a week or two before discussing that. The rest is either unimportant or we basically already knew (or at least suspected).

    What I am going to talk about is Terrence’s involvement with EMBER and my thoughts on it. I’ve been pretty clear in the past when I say that I think that Terrence is part of EMBER. I’ve made whole posts on this, okay? I think. I don’t know. It feels like I have.

    Anyway, I’ve talked about this a little in the UnOrdinary chat here on tumblr, so come join if you haven’t. But basically, I think that Terrence works under EMBER to some extent, or however that would work, but on a lower-tier. He’s a lesser employee, I guess. I don’t really know how to phrase this, though it should be easy. I think that Terrence works at a level low enough where he is not directly being made aware of EMBER’s true intentions or actions, and that he’s probably been given some bullshit reason for the jobs he’s done that makes it seem to him like he is doing a good thing. EMBER might be really convincing too and have him thinking that the things EMBER is actually doing are good. Whatever it is, I think that Terrence thinks he is doing the right thing. This could be his incentive for working with them, though I like the thought that Terrence wants some of EMBER’s ability enhancers for either himself or someone he knows, because that has more potential as a motive.

    So, I just said that the things mentioned in this episode are basically confirmed because of their mention, so I’m going to use them as examples of what Terrence has done under EMBER. The same goes for when, in episode 172, Seraphina thinks, “Invisibility? That day, on our way back from Kovoro Mall… the person following us also had invisibility. Is this just a coincidence?” That’s part of this for the same reasons.

    I think Terrence’s main job is to spy on whoever he is told, but that from time to time, he is also required to do some other small jobs like being a lookout or the get-away car person (I don’t know what it’s called). He’s spied on John and Sera on their way back from the mall, he’s spied on the main characters in hallways at schools, etc. And he was the driver with the superhero posse’s mall incident.

    Something brought up by the UnOrdinary chat was that Terrence would solve the problem of EMBER having to give out teddy bears to track high-tiers, but I think that giving Terrence the task of tracking the high-tiers at school would be way less efficient than direct trackers. Also, you don’t really want to rely upon a second-year in highschool for your entire scheme, now would you. So that’s why I think EMBER doesn’t use him to find high-tiers. Also, Terrence only has access to Wellston’s students, which is a very small pool compared to the literal rest of the world.

    The only thing that I can’t exactly figure out is Terrence’s connection with the school newspaper. The best thing I could come up with was that Vaughn, the principal or whoever he is, is working for EMBER and is giving Terrence instructions on what to do, but that doesn’t make sense when you take into account that Vaughn hates the authorities and EMBER are probably working with or even are the authorities. Shame, though, this would’ve been interesting. Terrence does, however, go out of his way to publish his stories in the school newspaper, which needs an explanation… This makes me think that EMBER as an organization are focusing on Wellston specifically. Maybe because they know about John’s history and want to see what he would do to Wellston (which is another thing that could be a possible connection to Vaughn and why he’s so lenient about John’s actions). They might be using Terrence as a way to fuel/spark any conflicts or climaxes. There’s also the interesting detail that ever since Isen became the head of the newspaper, Terrence hasn’t submitted anything that big, at least according to Isen in this episode.

    Anyways, I think that Terrence’s presence in the comic is a very big deal because it is the most direct connection to EMBER and their activities. Terrence, himself, might not play the biggest part, but he is a way for the other characters to dive into EMBER themselves, and a way for the audience to be reminded of the big, underlying plotline.

Claire:

    Claire’s mention in this episode is one of the highlights to most people. And to me. I am most people. God, I love Claire. In 2018, the only two comments I made on UnOrdinary were, “Petition to transfer Claire to Wellston for drama,” and, “#TRANSFERCLAIRETOWELLSTON.” So, just the fact that we’re getting Claire is just blowing my mind right now. Obviously, I know she's not transfering, but I don’t care. We’re getting Claire. And I am screaming.

    Anyway, we’re getting Claire interaction between Seraphina and Claire, which is not only very entertaining, but interesting considering how similar their experiences with John were. This is actually why Seraphina is reaching out to Claire. Seraphina is going into this interaction with the knowledge that John accidently views her as this person, which is bound to make an interesting dynamic between Claire and Sera. And dynamic. Is. Everything. Anyways, I don’t really have an analysis for this, but I want to make a bunch of kinda predictions because I feel like that’s all I can do. 

    I don’t think that Claire is going to want to talk to Seraphina at first, because she obviously wants to leave that part of her past behind. But they do eventually have to talk to each other so-- I think that Claire is going to be very serious towards Seraphina when explaining to her everything about John. This is why I think they will meet up in person right away, despite them having the option of texting and despite Claire living far away. Something else I’m excited for is all of the new things we’re going to learn about John. I think that Claire is going to be very interested to hear about how John became a cripple for about a year, because that’s just something I think Claire would find hard to believe. I’m interested in seeing what Claire knows about John’s dad and what their relationship is. I don’t know, just--John’s dad has gone for too long, especially considering what happened recently. Anyway, I think that Claire and Sera are going to end up as good friends. Either that or they’re going to hate each other, which would be amusing, but kind of unlikely. The thing about all of this is that we literally don’t know anything about Claire’s personality and what happened to her after John. She is unknown to us.

    I also think that Adrion is going to play a big part in the comic as well, because his presence was focused on along with Claire’s a lot. Adrion was in, I think, every photo shown of Claire and John (in this episode). We also don’t know a whole lot about him, which is unusual because you would expect that we would at least know his ability, but we don’t. We know the abilities of almost every minor character, but Adrion is a recurring and important character. This is why I think he’s going to show up, and why I think he’s going to be different than he seems. Like, maybe he’ll be introduced to Seraphina as all friendly and stuff, but then we find out that he’s evil. I don’t know. I just like stuff like that.

    This section is hella short for the topic it’s on, but because I don’t have much to add to this Claire thing and also that my feelings have kind of numbed out during the past week (because this is being written/posted really late), I don’t know what else to add. I’m just really excited and it’s hard to get your thoughts together about something you're really excited about. I don’t think we’ll get any interactions with her in the next episode, but the one after seems likely to me.

Ok so before we start, I gotta fess up and say I got spoiled for something because Twitter Sucks, so I know Tarn is in this series. Here are my predictions about that: 

Megatron said he rescued Astrotrain from a tyrant. I thought he meant an Alt!Universe version of him, but now that I know This Bastard is gonna be in it, I’m guessing it’s Tarn

If Megatron DID save Astrotrain from Tarn, it’d be hilarious if Tarn & co. weren’t actually planning to kill Astrotrain, they were just using him as transport, in which case Megatron essentially car-jacked (train-jacked?) them.

As much as I rag on Tarn and the DJD I actually do genuinely love the idea of an Autobot + Decepticon teamup against the DJD THAT WOULD BE SO FRICKIN COOL....

Heck now I’m just imagining them playing truth or dare or some similar game while waiting for Optimus to wake up. 

I’m sure at some point during their voyage on the Ark, Optimus froze and they all played the “who can do this silly / embarrassing thing in front of Optimus and get away with it before he wakes up” game. Like, Rodimus somersaults down the hall while spouting fire in front of Optimus, Bee does a handstand while singing the alphabet backwards, etc, and whoever’s in front of Optimus when he “wakes up” loses. (It’d be even funnier if Optimus kept pretending to be frozen while they played until someone did something REALLY embarrassing and he unfroze to freak them out. Then again, the Matrix going back into his chest would probably be too much of a giveaway huh)

what did you think of shockwave high-fiving bumblebee in cyberverse? that's the other moment of the show (aside from dancing soundwave, which you said you didn't like) that's been memed a lot on tumblr...

I hated it.  

I care a lot about characterization and character consistency, which is why I’m, incidentally, not a huge fan of fiction-based memes, at least ones that have a character acting inconsistently with their characterization.  In the cases of Soundwave and Shockwave, I look at these memes, and feel like I’m stuck in a mid-2000s lol-so-random! fanfic, wherein any character could be replaced by any other, and everyone just says/does whatever the author thinks would be funniest at the time (Not that I haven’t written this exact thing back in the day).

For me, Soundwave and Shockwave have always come off as these kind of dignified, creepy sort of guys - scheming, secretive, isolated from most of the other Decepticons, if only by personality (or were at least, they were presumably intended to be like this, because when I mentioned my issues with their portrayal in Cyberverse, I was countered with ‘oh yeah, they sure were dignified in G1.’  Like cartoon writing hasn’t come a long way since then.)  Anyway, it’s a little hard to take these characters seriously if they’re giving high fives, or having crazy dance sequences.  It feels like they could have been replaced with any other character, but having the recluses doing normal, social things was funny, so they went with the joke at the expense of characterization.  

Yes, the oft-memed events happened in pre-war flashbacks, and it could be that they were just more chill back then, but even if that were the case, 1. the way we jump around the timeline leaves things like Shockwave high fiving Bumblebee at a sporting event not too far off from Shockwave creating fucked up lab experiments, effectively making him look less like a mad scientist with little regard for life, and more like a goofy bro with weird hobbies.  And 2. the episodes go by so fast, divided between two (or more!) different settings, often with wildly different tones, that it makes it very difficult to get a good feel for any of the characters aside from Windblade and Bumblebee.  It could be that the dancing wasn’t intended to be abnormal at all, and that this Shockwave really was intended to be a goofy bro with weird hobbies - I don’t know, because the show hasn’t done much to establish a ‘normal’ for these characters, and I don’t see this changing any time soon.

I know that Cyberverse is for a younger audience, and that’s fine.  It’s not for me.  I just wish something new would come out that was, because I am starving over here.  

Earthrise Ep4

The bot that I was thinking of WASNT Ironhide, Ironhide is on the Ark still in this episode’s opening. WHO IS THAT BOT THAT GOT SLAPPED AROUND. He’s so familiar… I think he was part of the safety team or whatever that becomes a combiner in G1 S3 with Jetfire…  I know him.  

OK I JUST WENT TO TFWIKI AND I THINK MAYBE HE’S “Comms Officer” What the heck. Ten million Autobots out there and you don’t use an existing one… Don’t even name this one….

Optimus’s voice acting again giving Ironhide and Bumblebee angry orders… rough.

Was Megatron jumping to push Optimus away when he shot the bomb to blow up Scorponok or is that just my mepog goggles on too tightly? Also lol at them having their whole dramatic moment while Scorponok was still alive.

Bumblebee saying “Of course [Optimus] is fine, he’s a Prime” MAN they indoctrinated you good didn’t they Bee.

Oh Megatron is impaled I sense a good megop scene coming.

OH OPTIMUS CONFESSING HE WAS WRONG TO MEGATRON!! OH DELICIOUS.

Megatron busting out the “old friend” oh yeah thats the stuff. Him telling Optimus he built his ship with Deception souls too like yesssss air it all out boys, the dying confessional. Love this food.

Megatron saying too that Elita One is dead after saying Optimus sounds like her AND calling her Ariel again oh ho. Earthrise breaking brave new ground by having megop snipe at each other over a woman and me breaking NO new ground by eating it up like a basic bitch.

OPTIMUS WAS GONNA PUNCH HIM IN THE FACE!! God I love this food. (Kinda weirdly wound punch, like oddly slow, but still. Love this food.)

Framing overall is good in this scene, like the show is limited by Optimus not having a face to emote with so they’ve had some good shots of him like clenching his hand slightly and turning his back and crouching and bracing both hands at either side of Meg’s head on the stone behind him to get in Meg’s face and I am feasting thank you.

Also classic stuff where Optimus doesn’t want to let Megatron die and Megatron taunting him for being weak by not just leaving him to death.

OOOOO and then Optimus plays the reverse uno card!!! “Why didn’t you just kill me in that battle back there Megatron huh? You could have gotten the Allspark info some other way yeah? Why didn’t you kill me?”

Optimus says Megatron needs him because having a “villain” helped him rally his Decepticons and up his power. Its not quite an answer to the class justice aspect of the original rebellion but AT LEAST Optimus is finally focusing on calling out Megatron for looking for scapegoats as an excuse for just amassing power. Last season Optimus couldn’t even manage THAT.

Soundwave opens the blast doors in a second when Wheeljack had been struggling to hack them, and I am in AWE at the willpower it must have taken the writers to not shoehorn in another Soundwave superior line.

And then not two seconds later they have Megatron say “I still function” lmao *rolls eyes*

Wait didn’t Bumblebee in episode two when they got captured by the quintesson say he thought they were just a legend or something along those lines but now Megatron is explaining the G1 backstory how they used to be the quintesson’s slaves? what is the truth dot gif. Maybe it’s an age thing? Also possibly another reason why you guys have been at war for (presumably) millions of years JEEZ. Kids read a book.

Look Optimus I 100% understand not leaving Megatron to die when he was impaled but not wanting to blow up the station, which was your plan to get out of there and find the Allspark and save your race, just because Megatron was inside? Stupid. That’s an actual hard choice and he just tries to circumvents it saying “they’ll find another way”. I know its all moot because Starscream shoots at them like two seconds later but I bet ELITA would have thought about it and then tried to go with their original plan. Just saying.

Right like KO is already a star on his own and a fan fav PLUS his story is in an excellent place like how he started over and left his old life behind and now is part team Prime, it's just silly to NOT have him on. And here's another thing that im pretty sure is nothing but still, why would they go through much trouble to make an exact model of his alt mode and keep using it more and more if the idea of KO coming back isn't like in the back of their minds? Unless they jsut love to tease us

True, trueI honestly don’t know if the toys sold alright, but he’s always been a fan favorite as far as I can tell. 

And yes!! They’ve done this often, with KO himself and Megs on TFP, then Grim and Drift on RiD. It’d be a waste to simply throw it all away. Also, I think ever since the crew decided to give some sort of closure to Starscream, with the rumors of Team Prime showing up they’d have to include Knock Out.

Welp, I think the studio animating RiD is the same as TFP? Or at least someone said so, because they apparently have all the resources from TFP and even used them a lot. Like, Airachnid’s model showed up as a generic Decepticon on Decepticon Island, that Insecticon that worked for Starscream, the assets like military bases and stuff from Prime showing up again. Also, I’m pretty sure they used bits of KO’s tfp model on Dragstrip (though tbh ever since I saw him all I could think of was a yellow and purple retool of Knock Out so idk I might as well be wrong), and I think they used bits of Starscream’s old model on Kickback, was it?? I remember they did that in the past.

But also, I think the crew should’ve brought KO back for the Stunticons shenanigans. Idk about the whole combining thing, but I think he’d actually fit well with the team. Not only he could help out on the field, I imagined he could probably help Fixit around sometimes. :’) 

Anyway, the first time around I thought they added it more as a gag (since the camera pans to his alt mode when Strongarm says she’s “stuck with petty criminals” or something like that) than anything else. I guess on the race episode they added the alt mode as an easter egg? Still. 

After seeing Impounded I always thought it was a bit unlikely that they’d flat out add him without changing his alt mode in some way (like idk change it and base it on a newer aston martin model, it’d be a big enough difference to avoid confusion). Every character from Prime that showed up has had an upgrade of some sort on their model, even Ratchet. Well, Soundwave did not, but he’s getting one now in Combiner Force lol

But I actually agree with you that there must be a reason why they keep teasing us like that. I’m fairly certain there’s at least someone from the crew that is in touch with social media/boards and sees how well people react with the cameos. Maybe all this teasing really is leading to something good in the end

(also I remember seeing a lot of people over multiple boards and platforms talking about how they’d watch rid if KO showed up, like at least the eps with him and all that, so it would be great for RiD’s audience ranks if the crew actually DID IT instead of just planting cameos...)

OH AND ALSO the characters from prime that returned so far had happened to be fan favorites in a waybee, obviouslyoptimus, obviously²ratchet which i’m unsure but i guess ppl liked himsoundwave!!! soundwave was pretty liked i think?starscream

Auto Berserk Rambling Pt.1

Alright what I’m rambling about today is the Transformers G1 episode Auto Berserk, aka the episode that introduced me to Red Alert and got me absolutely hooked on his character! This rambling will include me talking about little details, my thoughts on the episode and what happens during it, and, as always, pictures!!! Fair warning, this is a very long post so I’m putting a Read More line on it so you guys don’t have to scroll through this all (also a 2 parter because it’s too long for a single post, lol). Now let’s begin!

First off…Soundwave. My dude. My cassetticon-carrying man.The Decepticon logo on the front gives away your disguise.

Dude looks so shook after going to grab a tape recorder that wasn’t even his and it turned into a giant robot in front of his eyes, like this is what you get for trying to claim some random tape recorder as your own, no mixtapes for you.

Moving on.

Red Alert that is one serious light show you’ve got going on. Now we know those are sensors for him (he mentions it in Blaster Blues before getting shot at by the Decepticons I’m pretty sure) and I remember reading somewhere that he has enhanced sensors (I know for sure in MTMTE he has enhanced hearing, I don’t entirely know about his other senses though), and I like the idea that the little sensory horns he’s got spark when either an alarm is being tripped or he’s detecting danger of some kind, or when he’s dealing with sensory overload. Here it would be the first for sure since Soundwave’s just hanging out.

Alright, oh boy, we’re about to get into part of what causes the main conflict of the episode.

Inferno leaving Red Alert when he was supposed to be his backup.

Now, I’ve got mixed feelings on this. On the one hand, Inferno saves Optimus and gets Rumble out of the Negavator, which helps them win the fight. He also didn’t want to stay in the bunker, he wanted to go out and fight, but Red had him stay. On the other hand, he literally left Red alone in there, to guard a bunker and the controls for the Negavator by himself, and him leaving Red is what leads to Red thinking Inferno betrayed him once his logic chips aren’t working anymore, which lead to the idea that the other Autobots were out to get him. Inferno couldn’t have known that would happen though, so we can’t really blame him for that part. Personally I think Inferno should have stayed, but it’s a complicated situation.

They argue about it for a bit but eventually Inferno just leaves. Maybe he should have yelled out that he was leaving as he was leaving, or did something so Red knew for sure that he was leaving, but instead Red was just left confused as to where Inferno was after getting injured by the missile, which sucks.

Ok theory time: So Red’s sensors are sparking like mad here, probably since he was just caught in an explosion it’s a combination of malfunctioning and being in a dangerous situation. They’re sparking like mad and he was just caught in a literal explosion, which no doubt caused damage, so I think it’s a combination of his sensory horns sparking too much and the damage from the explosion that fried his logic chips. Plus there’s the red effect underneath his eyes that starts up just after the screenshot above.

(I’m sorry if you can’t see it too well, it’s the episode quality but I swear it’s there.) I think that might have been a visual representation that at that point, his logic chips were toast, so it wasn’t the initial blast that took them offline, it was something afterwards, so the idea of it being a combination of the blast and his sensory horns sparking too much could work.

And then everything goes downhill from there.

Ok there is just….so much I have to say about this bit. First off, it’s when Red’s delusions start. He feels like Inferno betrayed him, ok, that’s valid considering Inferno just left, but then he says “why can’t anyone see it, Inferno wants my job!” which…doesn’t make a lot of sense, but his logic chips are toast at this point, there’s going to be leaps in logic and delusions don’t make sense a lot of the time (I could be wrong, my own knowledge of delusions is limited to what I’ve learned on my own over the years). Then when Optimus says that “it’s too dangerous to remain here”, Red’s convinced that “Optimus wants me out of the way too, it’s a plot!”, so now instead of just thinking Inferno’s out to get him, so does Optimus, and there’s an entire plot to get rid of him, which we know isn’t true, but it’s what Red believes.

This is when things start to get worse for Red.

Now let’s talk about why the heckity-heck Optimus doesn’t push for Red to see Hoist or any other medical bot we’ve seen on the show (Hoist is the only one in the episode though). Like Red was just caught in a literal explosion, Optimus saw Red Alert’s sensory horns spark just because he was getting worked up (cue my headcanon that when Red has panic attacks his can cause his sensory horns to spark), and heard Red say “it’s just an electro-glitch that comes and goes, comes and goes”, the last part of which was said in the exact same tone and cadence as the first time he said that! Like there’s multiple signs that something could be wrong, and at the very least since he was caught in an explosion, Red should be getting checked over.

But no. Instead things get worse. I’m just saying, if Red had gotten checked over, maybe they could have discovered that his logic chips were damaged before they nearly exploded.

Ok. Moving on.

:( This is also the only time where we see that his sensory horns sparking can actually cause him pain, like it might be a combination of them sparking on how his logic chips are damaged, but I think that sometimes when he’s overwhelmed or convinced there’s danger, they can spark to the point of causing him pain. Either way, it’s still a :( moment.

Ok. Here’s another bit that bugs me.

Optimus: Red Alert, analyze that noise. Red Alert: Noise? What noise? All clear.

Like. COME ON YOU GUYS, YOU JUST SAW THE ROCKS HIT THE GROUND IN FRONT OF YOU AND IT’S WHY YOU STOPPED, YOU HEARD THE NOISE, WHY AREN’T YOU QUESTIONING WHY RED’S JUST LIKE “Noise? There was a noise? Idk what you’re talking about, I didn’t hear anything.” WHEN RED ALERT POSSIBLY HAS THE BEST HEARING OUT OF ALL OF YOU. COME ON, WHY AREN’T YOU QUESTIONING THIS????? (Also, for context if you haven’t seen the episode, while Red’s saying his bit, there’s more of those sparks and we hear electrical noises, so I think it’s implied that the damage made it so he either didn’t hear the noise or just made him forget about it immediately.)

F to Optimus and Ironhide, RIP in pieces my dudes.

Anyways, Decepticons attack, there’s confusion, and Red gets hit, which damages him even further, and he’s basically stuck halfway transformed with smoke coming from him for part of the battle and then I guess stunned during the rest since we just see him sitting on the ground at one point.

This is just the Red Alert Suffers Episode, huh.

The battle itself is hilarious though, like you’ve got Decepticons saying nonsense (Smokescreen lands some shots at them so they’re saying stuff like “hey, my circuits electric blew just out” “too mine, I’m blind flying” “away move, before collide we—” (….I have that memorized. Why do I have that memorized?), Smokescreen living up to his name, and Megatron realizing that “I’ve got morons on my team!” (we’re in season 2 of the show my dude, it’s about time you realized that. Also I remember the episode where you got drunk with the rest of them and proceeded to pass the heck out, you ain’t special. Edit: Ok that’s literally in the next episode, lol, I guess Megatron realized “hey, we’re all morons here, yolo”)

And now…oh man do I have a lot to say about this bit. I’m going to include dialogue too.

Optimus (talking about the Decepticon attack): Red Alert, why didn’t you warn us? Red, backing away: You want to get rid of me, just like the others do. Optimus: Hmmm, you’re more damaged than I thought. Red, still backing away: There’s nothing wrong with me. Optimus: Red Alert needs a complete overhaul. [Hoist and Inferno begin to approach Red, Red’s still backing away and now his horns are sparking] Hoist: Your logic and reason circuits are fried. Inferno: You need immediate repairs! Red: Don’t give me any of that, you just want to disassemble me for spare parts! [backs up into the wall] Never! I won’t let you! [runs at them, knocking Hoist and Inferno to the ground, and runs off] Inferno: Wait! Hoist: We’re your friends! Optimus: Quickly, we must rescue him before he makes his condition worse! [Autobots chase after Red, calling after him]

So it’s just like…man, they just…really didn’t handle this situation well. The entire time, throughout this entire exchange, Red is scared. He’s backing away from the others the entire time, trying to put some distance between them because he doesn’t feel safe. When Inferno and Hoist start approaching him, his horns start sparking because he’s detecting danger and that danger is Hoist and Inferno. He’s absolutely terrified that they’re going to hurt him, to get rid of him, to “disassemble him for spare parts”, and what do they do? They keep approaching, talk about how “he needs to be fixed”, and don’t listen to him or see how scared he is at all.

Now, if you don’t get why Red’s so scared, don’t get why he’s running from his friends and should “just realize he’s not thinking straight” or something like that, let me put it this way: Say you’re playing a video game, you’ve got allies, you’ve got bad guys, and you’ve made a lot of progress in this game and trust your allies to help you out. But then! Surprise plot twist! Your allies are actually planning on betraying you, so now you have to escape before they catch you! You’d feel betrayed, right? While playing this level you’d feel scared, or at least nervous, whenever any of them started to get close to catching you, right? You’d want to get away as quickly as possible, right? Well that’s kinda what it’s like for Red right now. Only it’s not a game, for him it’s real, and that makes it absolutely terrifying. (It’s not a perfect metaphor or whatever but it’s the best I’ve got, hopefully you get the point). Anyways, just the way they handled this situation wasn’t very good. They didn’t listen to Red at all, they continuously mentioned how “he needed to be fixed”, continued to approach him, and when he ran off they chased after him, still yelling about “how he needs help”. There’s multiple things they did wrong here, and all of it led to Red running off. Also, I just want to note that Red was trying to keep his distance from them the entire time, and the only reason why he ran at Hoist and Inferno before running off was because he had literally backed into a wall and they still kept approaching. At that point he felt trapped and that’s when he felt he had to run. Now, I’m not entirely sure if the situation could have been de-escalated enough that Red wouldn’t have run off, but I can make suggestions for what they could have done better. 1) Gave Red his space. Literally he was backing away the entire time so he wanted space, and potentially this could have stopped him from running off since if they did this then maybe he wouldn’t have backed into the wall and felt cornered. 2) Had some of the other Autobots drive back to the bunker, or just somewhere else. Red Alert was seriously outnumbered and he thought they were all against him, if I was outnumbered about 7-to-1, I’d be scared too, especially with one of those bots being Optimus-freaking-Prime. Honestly having like, just Hoist, or just one single bot (not Optimus or Inferno though, they were the first few he thought were against him so that might not have worked well) try to talk calmly to Red might have made a huge difference. 3) Stop talking about fixing him. While they were right about him needing help, all that was doing was making him more and more upset, so they needed to stop talking about that and listen to what he was saying more. There’s honestly probably more stuff but I can’t think of it.

Oh my god that was a ramble and a half MOVING ON.
