look. as much as i support fic writers doing their thing and writing whatever they want. it’s important that there still be some resemblance to the original characters. like if you didn’t have the names, you should still generally be able to tell who’s who—characters’ personalities and histories should be enough to give us an idea
so like. as an example. consider a completely hypothetical mdzs modern AU.
it’s about a single father working multiple jobs to make ends meet…after struggling financially for quite some time…who is subjected to a fair amount of classism and abuse…and still works harder than all the others without a single complaint…despite having seemingly wealthy family…(including a brother who gives well meaning lip service about caring but ultimately doesn’t offer any kind of substantial help)…who initially rejects a wealthy prospective romantic partner out of pride, because he doesn’t want to be seen as a gold digger or a charity case…
…where a fair amount of narrative tension stems from a cheating, absentee father who had zero qualms abandoning his kid to near-poverty…who hid the true extent of his wealth because he never had any intention of sharing what wasn’t absolutely required…who accuses others of being gold diggers or trying to sleep their way to a better position…who also appears to regularly mistreat staff, among other classist habits…who goes out of his way to be cruel, and is generally an all around scumbag…
this is clearly describing two very specific mdzs characters, right?
based on canon, the context surrounding them and the interactions they have with others give us enough information to tell who these characters are—
—lan xichen and jin guangyao, of course. OBVIOUSLY.

Ah.... I think a part of the reason why the ACOTAR fandom have felt more hostile lately is because people can never just peacefully making up scenario of two character or more kissing around here without getting someone else write a whole ass essay with "proof" on why that pair will never work™ ..... You can't ship anyone in peace in this fandom without having One (1) person trying to debunk your ship😭 once or twice is fine. But with every single ships that's not canon? That's just tiring.
Example:
*some post about rhysta and how their dynamic will work if they're in a relationship*
Some person: making a 5 paragraphs essay on why rhysta will not work in a romantic relationship backed with proof of excerpt from the book like they're quoting the bible
I get IT!!!! WE'RE FANTASIZING ABOUT TWO FICTIONAL CHARACTERS KISSING. this is NOT the academic/scientific community, I do not need to have you peer review the text of two pair of characters fucking just because of canon

specifically looking at the hewitts since granted i know more on the remakes than the others but,
the hewitts only got vague, limited police action looking into them in '03 after erin chops thomas' arm off and gets away. and even though theres' coverage of it and everything, that literally ONLY happens after 4-5 straight years of the hewitts doing what they do, from 69-73 in terms of solely the remake timeline.
that's still a shitton of time to be ACTIVELY killing people to y'know. not fucking die yourselves. then combine that with the sawyers - their additional family members, their own trails of ruthlessness added into the mix, and this entire combined family unit likely has kill counts all around in the hundreds if not even way past that.
but even with the police involvement in the remakes?
its all SO SLOPPY, its hardly conducted with any real CARE about their own well-beings. like??? ya'll went into that house while THOMAS was STILL THERE... didnt even SECURE THE HOUSE.....
and even with the found footage? no arrests, presumably. the remaining hewitts are still at large, thomas is still at large. like... all ya'll did was corral them to their fucking confusing ass tunnel system and made luda (if we count the comics) far more involved and ruthless in the actual killings than she was in the movies lol
and yes technically speaking with charlie's death that could sever the stronghold they've got on the police and sheriffs' around them - but at the same time - how bad would it look of them to SUDDENLY flip a switch and try to unpack the years worth of missing persons, cold cases, murders, kidnappings, break-ins, assaults, etc etc that they swept under the rug? that's WAY too much man power, esp for back then. no one is gonna do that shit.
so. i truly dont think they have much to worry about even in the event of charlie dying - because the fear and influence they've instilled stands for law enforcement to continue to do fuck all - to save and cover their own asses.
