hii how are you? i hope you’re doing well :) i really love your fanfic crush, i’m writing a mello fanfic myself, but i’m having such a hard time capturing his essence, sometimes i get carried away writing him but then i realize it’s not really accurate, i either make him too angry, too much this, too much that, idk, do you have any tips for me? (only if you want, i just really love how you portray him, i think it’s really accurate so i thought what’s better than to ask you?) <3 ✨🌸

mello was a character i struggled to write at first too. he’s a delicate tightrope walk between intelligence, aggression, coolness and (in my opinion) brevity. personally i find that the hardest thing is striking a balance that encompasses all four.
so i’ll break it down, this is what worked best for me.
1. use canon
the way i wrote mello, i referenced the original manga (and voice/diction in the dub anime) a lot. i would first listen to his lines and try to internalize his voice. and then i would study his body language in his panels and try to shift that body language and attitude into whatever scenario i’m writing.
mello is a pretty layered character, which i think a lot of people struggle with. he plays up the characteristics that people often associate with him (i.e. in the call with the president, he acts taunting and brash) when on his own turf he’s actually very calculating and careful (i.e. any scene in the mafia - he’s often staring into space, sprawled into a relaxed but aggressive position, and thinking).
i think a big thing to remember too is that mello made many decisions in canon that need to be backed up to create a holistic view of who he is. reverse-engineering mello’s character from his actions was a huge part of how i developed my mello as well - “why did mello do this? what motivations were urging him to do the thing he did? why are his emotions this way while he’s doing it?”
general rule of thumb is: if your mello would not do the things that canon mello did, the way that canon mello did, he’s probably ooc.
2. take him as a whole - not parts of him
i focused a lot of my energy on trying to capture mello as a whole. a lot of it is meeting mello where he is, not where you want him to be. assuming he is fully formed, an actual person, and you are getting to know him, not creating him from scratch. when i was no longer concerned about making mello do things that i wanted him to do, and instead interacting WITH mello as a fully formed character, i found it natural to hear his voice. near the end of crush i felt like i was just documenting them with a camera while matt & mello did what they did. they moved almost completely on their own and i was just there to capture it.
for me, especially in the beginning, i would often “practice” by throwing both matt & mello into a scenario with no expectation or plot, and seeing how they play off each other, without trying to move them from point a to point b. i found that let me understand their characters better — better than say a character study or a self-reflection would. in fact the bar scene was that exercise for me, and ended up setting the tone for the rest of the fic.
3. figure out all the different ways you can read mello, and figure out which works best for you
the one thing is, even if you study mello and take him as who he is, there’s not a lot to work from off the original series. a lot of him is further developed in fandom, and so there are various camps of interpretations of mello that are all equally valid & sound. i found that mapping out exactly how mello can be interpreted and figuring out where my mello lay on that scale helped me a lot in determining what i found was personally ic/ooc.
funnily enough this matrix was really helpful even though it was just a stupid joke post from back in the day. i really liked the way “mihael keehl” talked, i found it so cool and grounding. “priss” still exists though the details or manner of speaking has changed over the years, in fact twinky/glamourous mello remains one of the most common interpretations of his character which i personally rejected (i don’t think it reflects his body language in canon at all). “batshit” mello is time and place for me, but ultimately, not how i like to write him (as it only explains some of his actions in canon but not all).

of course writing mello in the end is wholly depends on your personal preference - you could do all of this and still end up with a different vision of mello as i did. as long as he is fully fleshed out to you, the details don’t matter.

theres been a discussion of reeves vs nolan take on selina recently. someone said the nolan one was better and theyre currently getting dogpiled.. what is your take on whos better?
nolan unequivocally. i feel like people get caught up in nolan selina’s occasional sexy lines (which are cringe and i do dislike, to be clear) as a means to discredit the character altogether despite the fact that there’s so much emphasis put on selina having agency and liberty to do as she chooses, which is a quintessential aspect of her dynamic with bruce. he disapproves of her actions and methods at times but he respects her personhood and he doesn’t make choices for her bc obv he doesn’t have a right to but she would also never allow him to. their dynamic in the dark knight rises is great bc it is holistically predicated on a respect for her decisions, her bitterness, and her compassion. i do think there are other criticisms you can make as to how nolan selina sort of subtly reinforces the propaganda of the trilogy; i do not have the link at the moment but when reeves’s batman came out there was a youtuber who made a video comparing reeves selina to nolan selina and talked about how the latter’s whiteness did play into her ability to escape confinement and consequences easily, which when you juxtapose against the racism driving nolan’s casting and the recent shift to acknowledge selina as a potentially biracial character, can spark valid concerns as to limiting the potential class commentary she was actually capable of as a character (and i will address this later with respect to reeves selina). but that valid criticism aside my preference for nolan selina has to do with maintaining her character and relationship integrity, which to me is the most impt thing you can do in an adaptation. if the plot and circumstances will change, what you should at least try to do is maintain the core of the character, and nolan does that marvelously with selina and bruce (likely bc dixon, whose work the nolan movies are largely adapted from, actually tended to write these two well)
now, obv with reeves selina a huge reason for supporting her in comparison is the racial visibility, esp when you, again, consider why nolan originally rejected zoe for the role in his movies. and i do think that’s highly valid and frankly i want non-white selina, bc it makes her contentions with and distrust of the state as established in catwoman (1989) that much more palpable and worthwhile to explore. but a racebended casting doesn’t automatically do the work for you and there’s still a character integrity you have to maintain. and i think this is something not only reeves but dc writers at large tend to understand poorly. there’s so much racebending happening in comics these days and i do think it’s a useful vehicle but not as it’s actually used in practice. the changes are superficial rather than going to the root of the character. so i personally find reeves selina to be a huge insult to the character, bc rather than use that racebending as an opportunity to expand on selina and her hardline opposition to bruce and the state, it’s not really used to do much at all (which honestly can likely be attributed to the fact that everyone involved in making this script and plot was white!) and selina is instead regressed from what she was in the comic that reeves’s take on her was based on. catwoman (1989) and catwoman (1993) for that matter are huge novelties in selina’s history bc they are near insularly focused on her. we play by her rules and everyone else in the picture is a reactionary. the reeves movie turns this on its head bc now selina is subservient to bruce’s arc and to his decisions. he dictates what she does until she’s finally fed up with it, which we’re supposed to applaud despite the fact that bruce does nothing short of condescend to her and victim-blame a sex worker, and bc he ultimately saves her from her anger in the end so it’s romantic. the romance is the priority throughout the entire movie. there are brief moments of selina’s rebellion but as a whole she has no control over her arc bc bruce’s arc comes first. i also think the final scene where she says “the bat and the cat. has a nice ring to it” (or whatever it was, close enough) to be a complete misunderstanding of their dynamic at its inception. this movie purportedly based its selina on mindy newell’s work but somehow fails to recognize that mindy newell’s selina expressly disdained the idea of being associated with batman bc her independence and defiance was the entire point. even if you want to argue their dynamic in the movie is a reflection of what it has become in the comics now, those are depicting bruce and selina’s relationship with each other more than twenty years after they first met. it makes no sense to make selina so amenable to bruce in the beginning bc it completely undercuts the fact that she’s right in her class stance from the start. and it also seems to reiterate the prevalent misconception that for a romance to work between bruce and selina she has to soften her edges and anger, despite those being the exact things that made bruce attracted to and sympathetic of her

This is my current text thread with my friend from high school, Mariposa. She lives in Miami. She had actually called me the day after my birthday, but the conversation was more of a way for her to tell me about her oldest son's mystery health issues and not really a conversation geared towards finding out about me.
She has no idea what's been going on in my life since 2017. I told her about my then upcoming fallopian tube/ ovary removal surgery and she never checked in on me afterwards. Then when hurricane Irma hit, she very poorly planned getting out of Miami. She intended to make it to Atlanta but only got as far as Orlando because she left too late. Mind you, the last text I had sent her at the time was about my surgery. She never even referred to it in her texts letting me know she was coming to GA to escape Irma and I didn't bring it up either.
While we've known each other for a long time, I don't really let her in on my life as a means of protecting myself from disappointment. She has no idea that my mom and sister are dead or that I needed further surgery. She'll eventually learn of it and when she asks why, that's when she can decide whether or not she's open to listening about why.
Unless she's backed in a corner, she can't ask for things directly. She's very non confrontational by her own admittance. She knows I am the opposite. I've called her out on this many times.
I do love her a bunch and this feels more like an aggravated sister relationship, honestly. It just drives me bonkers.
So, in the phone conversation, she started talking about how one of her friends listened to a podcast that interviewed some holistic doctor in Atlanta. She thought I mentioned going to one, and I confirmed it. I sent her the link to my doctor's practice and found that my doctor actually does free consultations, which I either forgot about or didn't know about. However, I didn't offer my house as a place for them to stay, which is what I know she wanted. With the not working thing and the need-to-get-the-drywall-from-the-leak-fixed thing and the not knowing how Unfriendly is going to be healing post COVID thing, we're not really in a position to host. Not right now. But since she hasn't been able to keep up with me and I haven't been letting her know, she has no idea why.
Another of our friends from high school who is uncomfortably close to his mom lives in Atlanta inside the perimeter. She can bug him. Oh and how close? He brought his mom as his date to her wedding and as he was sitting at the table during the reception he had his arm around his mom like a date 🤢
I don't think she knew how to respond to my intentionally vague text near the end. Interesting that she hasn't replied back to me yet.

Introduction to Slow Living

Yes, I said it. The downside of the “work hard, hustle hard” culture is imbalance. How? Because it manages to disrupt the natural law of equal give-take as there is always one thing that is overly done. Be it in our workspace, relationships, the binge culture, etc. there is always the element of over-give/ overuse.
An apt example would be our favourite entertainment platforms dropping all episodes of a show in one day for us to “binge” on. If you’re one of those people who used to anticipate the drop of an episode every Monday and then be excited about it all week would understand and agree with me when I say that the quality of content or maybe the meanings we attached to our favourite shows has considerably lowered and we feel like we’re in always in a “catching up” loop.
This is where practices and mindsets like mindfulness, intentionality, slow living, etc., come in handy. In today’s blog, let’s take a look at what slow living is and a few ways in which we can begin to incorporate it into our daily lives.
According to the Wikipedia description, Slow Living is a lifestyle that encourages a slower approach to our everyday lives. From my understanding, it is both a lifestyle choice and a mindset where we curate our life with things that matter and are aligned with our values and beliefs: a life lived at a slow, meaningful, and intentional pace rather than rushed or based on mindless consumption.
To add a little more context, what slow living isn’t though is that it DOES NOT mean we do everything very slowly. It simply means “to not rush”. When we do not rush, we give ourselves a chance to pause and think.
The idea of slow living is synergistic with concepts like simple living, intentional living, mindfulness, minimalism, conscious living, clean living, balanced living, holistic living, soulful living, etc.
This means that the ideas covered within the umbrella of slow living might be closely related to, similar and at times, even the same as what is spoken about in the other concepts. It is all a very beautiful interwoven web of thoughts & concepts that allows one to easily explore and move towards growth in a manner most suitable to them.
I came across the concept of slow living during my Marie Kondo-style decluttering journey, along with a few other concepts (which I’ll get into in these blogs at some point). Simple ideas like taking the time to enjoy my morning coffee, my commute to work, etc. got me hooked on the concept and it slowly but very visibly became a lifestyle for me.
If you’re thinking, yeah this all sounds nice and aesthetic, but how can I possibly slow down when I have near-zero minutes to spare for anything other than my packed routine? I’ve got news: Yes, you can! And, I’ve got you covered.
Tiny Ways to Slow Down in Your Everyday Life.
Take the time to enjoy your tea/coffee rather than filling it up with gossip, chatter, news, or anything that’ll take your attention away from your beverage/refreshment.
On your way to work, pay attention to the route you’re taking. Notice the buildings, shops, trees, and green patches you come across. Get familiar with your route/surroundings.
Try to stay present with whatever you’re doing: cooking, driving, shopping or even doing the dishes, get all of your senses involved.
Find magic in the mundane. Yes, romanticize the most mundane tasks and see your inner child come out and play!
Find time to spend 10 minutes in nature. If you cannot, maybe look at a tree or the sky outside your window. Pause to find a sense of familiarity and belonging.
Have an indoor plant in your home/office that you can tend to often to unwind, relax and come back to the present moment.
Turn off all electronics while having your meal. Sit with your meal and savour it with your other senses (look, smell & touch) before you start eating it.
Let go of one thing from your to-do list. Not everything has to be done today.
Untangle, untether and unsubscribe from everything that doesn’t elevate you or serve you anymore.
Disconnect from the news, social media, binge entertainment, etc. as often as possible (ideally at least once or twice a week).
In my experience, I’ve found that slow living has helped me to connect deeper within myself and has significantly impacted how I look at the world. By making small changes to my life, endless opportunities for mindful growth and expansion have made themselves known to me.
I’ll share about my slow-living journey in bits & pieces in the upcoming blogs, take you through the perks of slowing down, share a few mindful ideas and even walk you through a step-by-step process of switching to a slower lifestyle (if you do choose to make a change of course).
