Hiriluk’s legacy 🌸

I have been lately inspired by the concept artwork Mary Blair did for Disney in the 1950’s, and I like the idea of doing scenes from One Piece similarly because of the wonderfully fantastic and colorful scenes and characters. I’m hoping to do more of these – I have lots of ideas!

Kureha’s reaction to realizing the true meaning of Hiriluk’s words is so painful.

I think this is part of what makes this entire situation a tragedy, and one of the reasons I feel like I can’t forgive Hiriluk no matter how important he was. He caused so much pain for the two people in the world who loved him most, all because he felt it was more important to prove his point.

When Kureha first found out Chopper had given Hiriluk poison she hit him, but here she realizes that she can’t even be angry at Chopper. He’s an innocent child who was told lies and fantasies about how the world works. At the same time, there’s no escaping the consequences of his actions. But Hiriluk was the one who taught him this, and I’m sure part of Kureha’s anger here is at him for making a child into a poisoner.

Despite her pain and grief and anger, Kureha is a proper adult. She kneels down to Chopper’s level and is working so hard to explain things to him, because she respects his intelligence enough to tell him the truth in a way he can understand.

I think I should share this with others, because the joy of this mental image is too much.

My darling friend @shakedowndreams has a fun AU fic ( link here ) that, summarized, is a fic in which Usopp dies and the crew is left to handle it, along side Usopp realizing he’s woken up into a cloudy, heavenly place with a bunch of men and women he recognizes as pieces of the Strawhats past.

This sounds fine and dandy however the pages are structured so there’s some downtime wirh Usopp, than back with the Strawhats.

I cannot imagine the shock the reader has to go through going from hearing Luffy softly cry himself to sleep and Sanji sorrowfully still making two bowls of food and suddenly turn the page and YORKI IS FIGHTING WITH HIRILUK LIKE PETER GRIFFIN VS THE CHICKEN ON THE FROMT LAWN WHILE BELLEMERE SMOKES A PACK BECAUSE “they just are bored, idk, they’re old.”

Issues like ‘oh god, Brook blames himself and needs Jinbe for support’ and it cuts back and Fisher Tiger and Tom are dealing with what they only know as a redneck who’s been here longer than they have asking “can fishman throw the ocean, and boil blood? Can y’all spit fire? How fast can you bite?’ Because he’s never seen one and Yorki SUCKS while Hiriluk makes lean in Saul’s sink???

I fucking love this fic SO much because of these fun inbetween ideas and I think y’all should have to hear it tbh.

There are a lot of things about Hiriluk’s story that I think are wonderful and touching, but something I can never get over is that most of the time he was wrong.

He was wrong to do this to Chopper, driving him out and acting like he no longer cared about him. He thought that by driving him away he would spare Chopper the pain of watching him die. But if he had succeeded Chopper’s heart may have never recovered, he could have thought nobody would love and accept him and he would have become an angry, lonely, mistrustful person.

I think Hiriluk did this because he is, frankly, stupid. He made bad decisions from a place of love, assuming he knew what was best for people. He was too focused on his own death specifically without remembering that the reason death is painful is because of the loss. Between losing Hiriluk to rejection or losing him to disease, Chopper would still be alone. But at least with the latter he would have fond memories instead of bitterness.

Obviously that’s not exactly how it works out, but every time I read this I think about how almost everything Hiriluk did made things worse. AND YET, there was still a lot of valuable things that came from his choices.

I do love a complex character.
