#9. Higurashi no Naku Koro ni - Tatarigoroshi-hen

oh my god this is the hypest shit ever. this ruled. this is SOOOOOOOO much better than onikakushi and watanagashi. tatarigoroshi really feels like ryukishi starting to cook with the settings + characters + mystery. this episode in general is very willing to break away from the established formula in a way watanagashi wasnt by having the horrors start hitting well before the festival and also being willing to cut away when the club starts yet another fucking board game lol

higurashi kind of permanently lives in the shadow of "this work lead to umineko, which i think is one of the best novels ever written" so a lot of the moments i really like, i like in the context of it being an inception point or the first traces of content found in umineko. not to say it doesnt stand on its own but so much of the mystery in this episode is like oh fuck this is just like how people perpetuate beatrice on rokkenjima. this imagery is just like magic. etc

It is the summer of 83’ and Keiichi has become fast friends with Mion, Rena, Rika, and Satoko. While preparing for their local summer festival, Keiichi learns about the festival's legends. Quite a few have gone missing or turned up dead. Many think Oyashiro is to blame. However, when asking his new friends about it, they refuse to answer. In fact, the more he starts to wonder, the worse things seem to get.

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni is a sound novel for the PC. It contains four arcs, known as the "Question Arcs." These sound novels—often abbreviated SNs or VNs (visual novels)—were written and illustrated by Ryukishi0 (Now behind Silent Hill F) While his brother, Yatazakura, scripted them into NScripter.

In June 1983, Keiichi Maebara moves to the village of Hinamizawa (雛見沢) and befriends classmates Mion Sonozaki, her twin sister Shion, Rena Ryūgū, Rika Furude, and Satoko Hōjō. Keiichi soon learns of the village's annual Watanagashi Festival, a celebration dedicated to the local deity Oyashiro. Hinamizawa initially seems calm and peaceful, but shortly before the festival, Keiichi learns that for four years in a row, murders and disappearances have been taking place on the day the festival...

What inspired the CSD AU? 👀

Oh God, I actually can't determine exactly what inspired CSD. The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumia first introduced me to the concept of timeloops, back when I was a kid, but I think it took me a while to really get into it...

I DO remember a Karamatsu Angst fanfic I read where the poor second eldest gets forced into a timeloop on the week of a festival, and with each loop his personality shifted hardcore from the despair of the situation. I loved that fanfic so much, so it might have tickled my consciousness and resulted in the idea of CSD.

Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni is also a big inspiration, in terms of the brutality of the AU. CSD!Kai and Rika would get along I feel...I mean, during Kai's less crazy phase. Same trauma? Same trauma.

Higurashi is a pretty important series to me. It was one of the first “mature” anime I had seen and it genuinely freaked me out when I first saw it! It was also super fun and exciting to unravel the mysteries of the various arcs of the story as I continued watching it! Very nostalgic~ 🧡

The series also has incredible music from the visual novels to the various anime! What are some of your guys’ favorites music tracks from the series? ✨
