VALLEY GIRL (1983) Grade: C

Kind of funny in a nogalistic sort of way. A must watch if you're a Nicolas Cage fan. He has some Nic Cage acting moments for sure. The story basically goes how you would expect.

Blu-Ray Review: Valley Girl

Martha Coolidge’s 1983 teen romance Valley Girl was a new wave 80s take on Romeo and Juliet: a valley girl falls for a Hollywood punk despite their friends not approving. It was also one of the best teen movies ever made IMHO!

Valley Girl Collector’s Edition on blu-ray

Shout Select recently released a Collector’s Edition of Valley Girl on blu-ray. I have to say, in terms of special features, most of it is the same as the 2003 DVD (audio commentary from director Martha Coolidge, music videos, story-to-film comparison, etc), but there are some new ones including a 2018 conversation between Coolidge and cast members EG Daily (who didn’t, or still doesn’t, have a crush on her) and Heidi Holicker, as well as a featurette about the history of San Fernando Valley. Neither of those features are worth upgrading if you already have the 2003 DVD. However, here is what is worth upgrading for: the movie itself! This blu-ray has a new 4K scan of the original negative. It looks as good as its going to get. The film is like looking at a polaroid picture of teen life in the 1980s: malls, big hair, wild fashion, an awesome soundtrack, and driver’s ed! But its the romance that really draws you in.
