So I finished Heartstopper last night and I just wanna talk about how much I appreciate how they handled the conflict with Ben and Harry.
TW for Bullying (cuz Harry) and slight SA (cuz b*n h*ope)
So often in media, especially for younger audiences (kids, teens etc) forgiveness is emphasized. And not saying that isn't important, you can't just hold a grudge against everyone who accidentally bumps into you. But so often the emphasis on forgiveness becomes so toxic, setting the narrative that everyone deserves forgiveness with a "sorry". The problem is that there are some things in real life that can't actually be fixed by a "sorry".
Charlie not forgiving Harry was so satisfying to see. As we all know, Harry is a prick. And while we are never shown the worst extent of his bullying of Charlie, we do get an idea. So while he apologized, and 'stood up' for them a little bit it definitely doesn't magically erase all his past mistreatment towards Charlie, they're not suddenly friends, it's unlikely they will ever be, and it's perfectly reasonable (and very satisfying) for Charlie to shut the door in his face.
Ben as well. As we know, Ben basically used Charlie in a relationship and tried to f*rce himself on Charlie. This is DEFINITELY not something that could've been fixed by a sorry. Even though he apologized and "boohoo his family isn't accepting and he's leaving Truham" that doesn't make what he did okay. Charlie says himself that what Ben did to him still affects him. As the person who still feels the effects of Ben's actions to this day, Charlie is the only person who can decide if he wants to forgive Ben when he's healed. No amount of apology can make Ben entitled to that process, no matter how much he supposedly tries throughout the season.
So often in media we're told to always forgive, and in real life we're nagged at for holding grudges. So thank you to Heartstopper for showing that it's okay to hold grudges if you still feel the effects of something.
