i was tagged by @gohandinhand and @thelastwarriornun. ty guys it’s so so brave to tag people 🥺🫡

favourite colour: i love yellow and i mean pikachu yellow mostly because that little guy was my everything growing up. i remember i had a pika plush and my parents still talk about “the tail incident” when his tail fell off and they had to sew it back on in front of me while i cried. i still have him but he’s kind of gross (affectionate)

currently reading: the poetics of space by gaston bachelard as my academic book of the week (it’s making me insane). then for casual reading i’m slurping down Promise of Blood (caspercore i know) by brian mcclellan and also Network Effect by Martha Wells.

last song: little bird by the weepies (wolfwren song of all time, to me)

last series: star wars rebels season 2 (and no i definitely wasn’t absolutely 😭 at the end of it. i’m too brave and strong for that)

last movie: i rewatched alien again recently. i’m not good at movies they’re chores to me. i prefer longform stories (as much as i respect the crafting of one-breath narratives 🫡)

sweet/savoury/spicy: i should say spicy but actually i love sweet things. mostly those sugar-coated marshmallows you get in Aldi but also the sweet you get from monster drinks. that mind-numbingly artificial taste does it for me 😌 i love hot sauces though but usually ones like sriracha that are mostly just sweet anyway. savoury food isn’t my ballpark i hate crisps and and chips and my ancestors are horrified at my indifference to all potatos. most savoury food i have to make sweet or spicy before i care about it. sad sad sad

currently working on: chapter 3 of my wolfwren fic. i know i posted chapter 2 yesterday but i have 5k of the next chapter written already.m 🫠🫠 on account of getting to stay awake forever and ever.

also my wn star wars au!! need to get my brain back into it but it’s the mental equivalent of rolling around in lava (enrichingly) and also feeling the urge to start on the pjo au again. and chess au. aaaand i have too many things i’m working on.

the second theme song which rly catapulted my desire to read, songbait is a v strong motivator to pick up new stories 230530 edit: the way the song incorporates a sweet quote from the end of the novel...! hnnnng

the dynamic is 😔👌 i've lowkey been struggling to find this sort of dynamic where they're initially quite sus n distrusting of each other but then the mutual trust n attraction Grows, n also plus points to the rather brash-and-cocky charismatic manly gong and cold elegant shou archetype which i've also been craving lmao

speaking of dynamics, the way their romance unfolds is so?? love how yan xie Falls n it reads a little like early qjj actually, the way the gong stares at the shou even when the shou is doing sth completely mundane but he gets horny n im like, yes i like this, is this trashy of me,

hnng the way the plot slowly unravels and how it all ties into jiang ting's past, is it strange that i like it bc it doesnt seem as galaxy brain as modu lmao

i was actually pleasantly surprised to find that it's v easy to stop in between arcs

and also the way jiang ting uses up all of yan xie's pu'er tea cake that's meant for his future wife lmao i think abt it sometimes. n i'm just so. it was all meant to be from the very first time jiang ting consumed those tea cakes.

lmao the way yan xie's Manliness™ is emphasized literally like every chapter does get kind of grating sometimes like yes i understand he is bursting w male hormones i dont need to keep being reminded how strong his chest muscles r n how he looks lean when clothed but absolutely ripped when shirtless😭

the romance was. in hindsight it was very fast. like i kind of understand that ~40 ch in meta wn terms is like... normal pacing, but within the story only like 1-2 months have passed n they just?? trusted each other so fast?? n fell super fast???

not exactly dislike but like the v v v obvious sequel bait lmao like it was clear huai shang was planning tunhai alrd

ep46 (2/3): go off wen ning!!!

oh this episode has so many great romantic shots of lwj catching wwx and dramatically cradling him in his arms and gazing tenderly at him and taking care of him physically and looking horrified and caring when he learns the truth. it's like his number one role in this episode from this point on

THERE HE IS!!!!! much like jyl's ep25 speech, this is wen ning's absolute best scene. the best scenes of both jyl and wen ning, gentle and deeply loving side characters with little political or cultivation power, involve them defending wwx, someone who looked after and protected them in turn. it's happened so rarely and it's so satisfying to see it come down like that

come to think of it, most great lwj scenes are of him doing the same thing

oh gosh lwj looks almost disgusted when he sees jc draw suibian. like 'really??? HIM??? ugh'

WEN QING!!!!!!! 😭😭😭😭 YOU HAVE BEEN MISSED BELOVED!!!!

oh he is NAILING the 'the man I love went through torments untold and I utterly failed him when it mattered and now I hold him in my arms and gaze at his face and wonder how I could have been so foolish' look

I love that wen ning has such a precise and detailed memory. it's fitting as a companion and defender of wwx, who famously has a poor memory even when it comes to himself. it's so good for wwx that wen ning and lwj both witness and carry wwx's struggles so he doesn't have to do so alone. im getting choked up

oh and he just tears into jc in this scene. mwah. so so satisfying

and look how passionate he is! quiet, timid, kind wen ning, whose default expression is solemn awkwardness or a shy smile, outright shouting at this sect leader. and rightfully so!

his is his SISTER! and jc shouldn't forget why he's here! wen ning isn't here to punish or kill jc or even really hurt him. he just wants him to know who he owes his life and success and strength and sect to - people he's abandoned, people he's tortured, people he's sworn to kill. it's a bitter pill to swallow, and it's devastating for him, but wen qing deserved to be remembered. and jc needs to understand what exactly wwx did before he can decide to torment him for eternity or whatever he was planning

jc sobbing should also be satisfying, but honestly it's just sad. he makes me tired. isn't he tired?

thank GOD wen ning said this because a lot of people take wwx at face value especially when it comes to jc and it's important to remember that wwx wasn't being sincere in a lot of circumstances, both before and after the war

oh god and now he's remembering all the things he did to wwx and the things wwx said to him before he left to get his core 'restored' oh god oh fuck this is why he apologizes later. this is what it took. thank you wen ning 😭 I will never ever call wwx an idiot for not communicating things he was clearly too traumatized or in too much of a precarious position to communicate but I'm so glad someone did

anyway wn and lwj united in taking care of and defending wwx is such a lovely partnership 🥺 for so long he's been taking care of everyone and all alone and refusing help and now the two most loyal and loving people still alive are looking after him and making sure he's okay. it does make me emotional

oh god...this line really hits. when you and your family are facing extermination from literally everyone in the entire world, when everyone is treating you as less than human and calling for your blood, when you're utterly alone in the nightmare, then having even one person stand up for you and advocate for you, just one person who tries to save you...yeah I would remember that too. but then wen ning always remembers the good people do for him. he was loyal to wwx as soon as wwx was kind to him, bc it was something wwx does regularly but that never happened to wen ning before.

man arguably wen ning lived by the 'forget the bad, remember the good' that cssr told wwx. I feel like I've already said that

as tangled and silly as the timeline is for nightless city, I don't find it hard at all to believe that lwj, hearing some shit went down and the wens turned themselves in, first went to nightless to advocate for them. failing that, he ran back to BM looking for wwx and found a-yuan. he took a-yuan to CR, put him in with a medic, and then booked it to nightless.

...actually now that I write it all out, it does sound a bit unlikely. but lwj WOULD delay going to wwx if a-yuan needed him, and the travel time for the wens and the time wwx spent asleep could account for the time lwj spent desperately flying back and forth all over the jianghu

oof yeah I joke about lwj not communicating shit but really...in this situation I can see why to an extent. yeah, lsz deserves to know his identity and family. the wens shouldn't be absorbed into the lans and lost from the world forever. god knows there's enough real world examples of racist adoption that contributes to genocide and loss of culture (see, white adoption of indigenous americans and aboriginal people). but I can see him not wanting to tell a child that hes the last survivor of a mass murder bc there's no comfort he can offer. he didn't even really know them. it still would have been better if he'd told him, obviously. people shouldn't but cut off from their families, even dead. none of the wens should have been forgotten. but I see why. and I see why wen ning is doing the same thing

Can you explain what you mean by canon characterization?

Well, there are a few different ways to look at it, I suppose and everyone has their own interpretation. But there are a few trending characterizations or fanons we most commonly find in fics. Some of them include:

1. Fanon - Jiang Cheng's characterization is softened. He misses his brother, mourns for him, keeps Chengqing because he values him, etc.

Canon - He is a canonical antagonist and we prefer fics that understand this. He also has homophobic tendencies and he does torture and kill people by his own admission. He also led the siege against the Burial Mounds despite knowing there was a child and a few elderly there.

2. Fanon - Lan Wangji spends 13/16 years playing inquiry for Wei Wuxian.

Canon - Lan Wangji grew and matured into a strong man. He led his own life until life rewarded him with a rare second chance.

3. Fanon - Wei Wuxian is a reckless or oblivious person.

Canon - He always thinks things through and accepts the consequences. Even his mischief has a purpose. He wasn't oblivious to LWJ's feelings for him. A combination of LWJ not communicating well and the circumstances they were in caused misunderstandings. When LWJ had a more positive approach towards WWX, the guy caught on quickly.

4. Fanon - Wei Wuxian is insecure and suffers from self-esteem issues.

Canon - He is pretty self-aware and confident in his skills. He absolutely doesn't think he is 'undeserving' of LWJ's love.

5. Fanon - Lan Wangji has stilted caveman-like speech.

Canon - He speaks clearly and concisely. When he has to say something, he doesn't use filler words but he doesn't sound stilted.

6. Fanon - Wei Wuxian is a war criminal and feels guilty about his 'sins' all the time.

Canon - While he has regrets, he doesn't accept blame for things he didn't do. The narrative doesn't punish him because he was pushed into the corner every time and had to choose between life and death.

7. Fanon - Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng eventually reconcile, JC organizes WWX's wedding and invites him to the Lotus Pier.

Canon - They do not reconcile by the end of the novel. In the extras, JC's behavior is shown to be unchanged.

8. Fanon - JC is 'forced' to submit to the will of the sects and turn his back on WWX.

Canon - By the time the incident came around, YunmengJiang was already in a good position. He didn't need to bow to the will of the sects. JGS clearly provoked his jealousy and JC didn't acknowledge the life-debt he owed WN and WQ.

These are just some of the common tropes we have seen in fanfics. There is also a tendency to copy WWX's characterization (not personality, but his morality, his tendency to protect others, and his willingness to do what is right) onto Jiang Cheng.

In general, Pocketful will not recommend fics that we believe have a lot of fanon tropes or compromise Wei Wuxian or Lan Wangji's characters. If we do recommend something, we will tag it. Fics submitted to our events must follow novel canon characterization as much as possible but our primary concern is always fics that compromise WWX or LWJ's character.

For example, if you submit a fic where WWX is a a reckless brat that doesn't think about the consequences of his actions, we won't promote it. If you submit a fic where JC actively ships WX, plans their wedding, and considers WWX 'oblivious', we will not promote it.

For my "Yunmeng Jiang becomes the founding sect of demonic cultivation" AU I have 3 endgames for the three siblings.

Let me.

WangXian: seems pretty obvious, squabbles aside they will end up together - albeit not LEGALLY married, cos Ancient China was not THAT progressive, and YET these two will end up together.

XuanLi: I did mention that these two will be together and happily married in my post on Yanli. JZX is absolutely enamoured with his wife and no, he does not care that she is using demonic cultivation.

ChengQing: YMJ as demonic cultivators means that the Best Wens live and so I get to have my ChengQing wedding. The comb plays a Very Important part and will be how these two will confess to each other. No, WQ does not care either that JC is using demonic cultivation.

In general the attitude that WQ, LWJ and JZX take whenever someone points out that their other halves are demonic cultivators is:

NHS, WN and NMJ are the Best Men at all of the 2 and a half weddings.

In one of the extras JGY talks about how JC has Chenqing so other people do know he has it. He specifically says he has it to bait WWX and that everyone considers him a mad dog obsessed with a dead person. The first thing he does when he suspects MXY is WWX is hit him with Zidian which would have killed WWX if he was possessing the body. And he plans to torture WWX before JL distracts him and threatens him with scattering WN ashes so he can’t get a proper burial. So I do think he hates WWX.

1. I don't really consider the extras to be part of the main story, but sure. JGY knowing about something does not equal it being common knowledge, my man Jiggy knows a lot of things he shouldn't. JC does want to speak to WWX, he refuses to believe he's dead, and there's a lot of anger and pain still there. But bait implies that it's some kind of trap, and I don't think that's it. He does want WWX to come to him, but I don't think he's thought much further than that. Because when he does have WWX alone he does pretty much nothing except scare him.

2. If WWX was possessing MXY it would've been completely justified to expell him. End of story. It would mean he was a vengeful spirit that had taken over and supressed the soul of the body's owner. I don't think it would've given JC any peace of mind though and then any way of clearing the air would be gone.

3. He does not. He first thinks about about torture on Dafan Mountain, when it's still unclear if it's MXY or WWX, but there is definitely demonic cultivation going on so of course he wants to get to the bottom of it. When he captures WWX later, knowing for sure it's him, and has him alone with Fairy the only thing he says or thinks about doing is this: "Don't worry, you can go back to Lotus Pier and say your excuses while kneeling in front of my parents' graves." That's it.

4. Jiang Cheng absolutely hates Wen Ning. But that's another discussion.

Thinking about YunmengWei and Xiao Xingchen coming down the mountain, talking about his dream of founding a sect based on hard work and merit rather than bloodlines and Song Lan, who knows 2% more about the sects than Xiao Xingchen does, going “oh yeah YunmengWei is like that. It’s new, and I’m pretty sure it was founded by your martial nephew” and the two of them visit and are welcomed into the sect by Wei Wuxian and his husband, his adopted siblings (Wen Qing and Wen Ning) and the hoard of children they’ve adopted. Xiao Xingchen, whose sole reference point for how a person would gain disciples is Baoshan Sanren, who acquires children by taking home whatever orphan she happens to find, has now decided that this is just how you get children. A few years later, upon finding A-Qing, he’s thinking to himself “and now I have started to acquire my own gaggle of orphans. I am a family man now.”

Look, this is adorable and I can absolutely see this happening. WWX, LWJ, XXC, WN, WQ, and SL are just all in their own little world, running a successful sect with ridiculously powerful cultivators and their gaggle of children.

The most terrifying part? The gaggle of children are becoming ridiculously powerful too.

ok i’m backwards sometimes and tend to read fanfic before consuming the source media but i finally read mdzs so i can make this post now

so. i’ve seen some canon divergence fics where the ambush at qiongqi path does Not go as planned in several ways - wwx avoids it entirely, wwx manages to stop wen ning before he gets to jin zixuan, wwx takes the hit for jzx and gets hurt himself... anyway it’s all good but i would like. to propose another option, this time optimized for Sheer Chaos

the ambush starts the same as canon; there’s archers, there’s jzx showing up fashionably late and with 0 idea what’s happening, there’s wwx and wn absolutely losing it

wen ning attacks jzx. wwx notices this in time, pulls jzx out of the way, gets hurt instead. listen i KNOW this is done before. wait for it

IMMEDIATELY after this happens, jzx gets hit by a stray arrow or two, aimed at where wwx was just standing

it’s not, like, an immediately fatal wound, but it’s serious enough

wei wuxian is currently hyped up on adrenaline and paranoia, and also losing blood fairly quickly

he sees jin zixuan, unconscious or close to it, with an arrow stuck in, idk, his chest or something, and the conclusion he jumps to is “oh, they want him dead too”

“i can’t let shijie become a widow”

so he grabs jzx, and wen ning grabs him, and they all go Straight Back To The Burial Mounds

wwx passes out before they get home, so wen qing is greeted by the sight of her brother, obviously upset, holding two (2) unconscious bleeding cultivators, one of which is The Actual Heir To The Lanling Jin Sect

wen qing: “i don’t get paid enough for this”

so. jzx wakes up first, due to several reasons including: he wasn’t as badly injured, he still has his golden core, and he doesn’t have needles currently stuck in him due to being a Known Terrible Patient

jin zixuan’s current situation: he is sitting. in a cave in the Burial Mounds. with 1) his adopted brother-in-law (currently unconscious), 2) Wen Qing (incredibly tired of this shit), and 3) Wen Ning (inherently terrifying but also currently incredibly guilty about what happened)

it is... awkward.

jin zixuan gets the HECK out of there as fast as he can

unfortunately he can’t, like, actually leave, both because he feels obligated to argue clear things up with wwx regarding what just happened, and because he’s not healed yet and wen qing refuses to let him leave until she knows he’s gonna actually make it back

so jin zixuan proceeds to have the most awkward few days of his life, as he’s stuck in the frickin Burial Mounds with a bunch of people who his sect captured and enslaved and horribly mistreated, and whose hospitality he is now relying on

he also makes friends with a-yuan, who’s very worried about wwx

a-yuan inadvertently gives him a lot of feelings about a-ling

jin zixuan isn’t really sure what to do about that

ANYWAY after a bunch of super awkward dinner conversations, wen qing brings wwx out of his medically induced needle coma, and he and jzx finally get to compare notes

when wen qing finally releases him, he leaves with a decent understanding of the qiongqi path incident from wwx’s perspective, aka It Wasn’t Really His Fault, and having tentatively convinced wwx that jzx being injured by the jin sect was unintentional

jzx is understandably conflicted over the whole thing; jiang yanli trusts wwx, and he has to admit that wwx was most likely the wronged party in that situation, but... it’s his family? his sect?? and now he’s being told to believe that they’re cruel enough to lie to their own family and murder people in cold blood

so he heads back home, sort of hoping that maybe he can work this out, convince his father and cousin to be reasonable about this, and maybe?? clear wwx’s name??

however.

jin zixuan has been gone for several days

and it’s not like lanling jin sect has been sitting around doing nothing in that time

what i’m saying is

jin zixuan shows up to koi tower. RIGHT in the middle of an emergency conference. where jing guangshan is leading the drafting of a message to the burial mounds, calling for the surrender of the wen sect’s leaders

in response to the murder of jin zixuan by the yiling patriarch, wei wuxian

and thus. chaos ensues

Typical the untamed Time travel fix it fic but the time travelee is the most unlikable character in the show (Jin Zixun) but everything turns out actually kinda fine!

For maximum funny as well as for the right circumstances to occur, in this universe Zixun dies and is transported to like right after the Sunshot Campaign, but before the Phoenix Mountain Hunt.

Okay before I begin here’s my reading of Jin Zixun. Honestly, I don’t really see him as that overtly ambitious. Unlike many within his sect he seems to be happy with being told what to do by those higher up on the pole than him (to reiterate WITHIN his sect, he still has the absolute gall to disrespect Xichen and Lan Zhan at the Phoenix Mountain Hunt banquet) and telling those below him what to do.

Zixun has a pretty good gig! He has the privileges and the position similar to that of a second son of the sect leader without actually being one. He was raised to believe he would act as the right hand man to the sect leader of the most important and prestigious sect (at least that’s what he believes). Yes, I think he would do whatever he’s told in order to advance the Jin Sect’s standing but that’s not a trait unique to him. I don’t think he would seek out unnecessary danger or glory that would elevate his sect without a guarantee of his own safety. He’s not stabbing Wen Ruohan or trying to steal the Yin Tiger Seal. He doesn’t crave power the way JGS does or have the burning ambition JGY does. He doesn’t even have the glimmer of drive Zixuan has to make the Jin Sect a better place, shown when he berates what he thinks is a gentry woman (poor Yanli) taking advantage of a servant’s work and when Zixuan joins the SSC despite his father’s orders. He’s proud of being a member of the Jin Sect and absolutely uses it’s power to his advantage, but I don’t think he would particularly feel bad about saving his own skin.

Also, and I genuinely do think this, he does have a certain amount of loyalty to Zixuan. There are no signs he wants to usurp Zixuan’s position as heir, and I think he’s shown to generally listen to Zixuan’s orders, if sometimes begrudgingly. Before he died he watched dozens and dozens of Jins plus the cousin he was raised with all die due to his hubris. And while he’s an asshole to JGY like so many others within the Jin Sect, I think near the end of his life he actually warms up a little bit to him. Within the book I think he evens calls him A-Yao like Zixuan near the end. Zixun is nowhere near as calculating or smart as JGS or JGY (JGS’s not stupid if he was stupid he wouldn’t be so dangerous) but I think he does realize that if Zixuan dies 1. There’s now a potential for him to become heir which means more responsibilities and less fun 2. The cousin he grew up with dies, and that’s not something that would be advantageous to his personal goals and it’s not something he actually wants. He’s spent his whole life following Zixuan’s lead, and I don’t think he’d want to see Zixuan dead too.

That out of the way, the wen remnants live because of Jin Zixun. His reasoning is he got killed by the Ghost General, and what led to Wen Ning becoming the Ghost General was WN's death. So of course, releasing him ensures him WWX has no reason to resurrect him. There! Problem solved. But then Zixun remembers that the Ghost General has a sister, the feared physician of Wen Ruohan. If she dies, then WWX might just resurrect her instead! So okay, release her as well. But then Jin Zixun remembers that there are 48 other wen remnants WWX might choose to resurrect. He doesn't know the very specific debt of both duty and familial love between Wen Qing and WWX that led to Wen Ning's resurrection. For all he knows, maybe he does truly believe WWX has been turned crazy by resentful energy and next thing you know zombie Granny Wen is crushing his windpipe. I think in this universe he doesn't beat Wen Ning and other Wen prisoners because he's truly so fucking terrified! So, Jin Zixun lets free all 50 of the Wen Remnants in the middle of the night. Zixun is still cruel, arrogant, and cowardly but the releasing of the 50 Wen Remnants does change how people in the cultivation world view him, if they think of him at all.

So, Jin Zixun was not anticipating releasing 50 prisoners into the public when previously he was just going to release WN. However, he reasons that perhaps no one will particularly care. Unlike before, they were not taken in by the grandmaster of demonic cultivation and whisked away to evil bone mountain. None of the prisoners he released are particularly powerful, or have much of a shot at bringing back the Wen back to it’s previous power. Besides, he reasons that he’s admired and loved within his sect! He’s supposed to be Zixuan’s right hand man! With the confidence of a teenager/young adult who’s never had consequences in his life he’s sure the worse punishment he will get is a slap on the wrist. What’s the worst that could happen?

I think at this point, Jiang Cheng might take the Wen Remnants in. WWX is no longer the same scapegoat of the cultivation world as he was. WWX’s still the head disciple of the Jiang Sect, and he’s not running around with a resurrected, incredibly powerful and dangerous, connected by blood to Wen Ruohan Wen Ning. He’s still feared but he now has nothing to do with killing dozens of Jin disciples and running off to protect the Wen Remnants. Yanli at this point isn’t stuck within the Jin Sect pregnant, and virtually alone. JC could definitely frame it as “cleaning up the Jin Sect’s mess” in a way that was impossible before. He would definitely still have his reservations, but both his siblings are safe and I think that makes a world of difference. How the Jiang Sect handles their “prisoners of war” is entirely up to the Jiang Sect, and if mysteriously the Wen Sect starts to integrate within the lotus pier population, well. Prove it when they are all wearing Jiang colors and the wens themselves are unrecognizable unless they’re wearing red and standing besides Wen Qing and Wen Ning. Wen Qing’s medical cultivation skills would be a boon to the Jiang Sect, and this is still at the point where the Jiang Sect just got demolished. They are just rebuilding. New civilians, even wen ones, are a blessing more than anything, and I think that’s easier to recognize for Jiang Cheng when taking in the Wen Remnants does not do nearly as much damage to WWX’s reputation nor the Jiang Sect as a whole. I think it’s still a hard pill for him to swallow, but I also think that Wen Ning, the one person honest with him about the origin of his new golden code (admittedly rightfully brutally honest and leaving JC weeping on the floor), might just tell him if he thinks it’s not morally right for JC to not know before letting him into their home, which then seals the deal.

So, going back to Zixun. He’s kicked out because at this point in the timeline releasing the Wen Remnants fucked up a lot of stuff for JGS. The Jin Sect got away with very little casualties within the war, and this is not something easily forgotten by the other sects, especially when the wounds of the war are so fresh. The Jin are put in charge of Wen prisoners of war, and suddenly 50 Wen prisoners INCLUDING the personal physician of Wen Ruohan disappearing into thin air does not look good for JGS. Furthermore, with JGY being legitimatized within the Jin Sect, there’s no longer as much need for a spare like Zixun. If Zixuan had any (legitimate male) siblings I’m sure Zixun would not be nearly as privileged or influential within the Jin Sect. That doesn't mean that JGS would happily expel Zixun for no reason, but I'm sure in The Untamed or MDSZ if JGS got put in a tight spot he would absolutely throw Zixun under the bus if need be. Turning around the story to make it look like Zixun disobeyed his Sect Leader's orders and he’s being subsequently banned from the Sect as punishment takes alot of heat off of JGS’s back. No one's going to advocate for him either. He's an asshole! I doubt any of the other disciples truly like him, and his "friends" are just other assholes who would not waste their time defending him if it means damage to their own reputation. His uncle expelled him, and I don't think we hear of any father, mother, or older sibling to advocate for him. Hell, even Madam Jin wouldn't defend him considering the truly awful way Zixun treats the wife of his SECT leader at the Phoenix Mountain Hunt in canon. I don't think he has anyone truly caring of his fate besides....

Zixuan! I think that Zixuan generally does have familial loyalty and perhaps even fondness for Zixun, if an exasperated fondness for his shithead cousin who he sometimes has to verbally pick him up by the scruff of his neck. So, Zixuan goes to Yanli, like “please I know he’s an asshole I know. But he’s my cousin”. Zixun releases the remnants before the Phoenix Mountain Hunt, so either this occurs before the Hunt takes place OR during the hunt and Zixun isn’t present for it. I like to think that without Zixun insulting her mother sect and family and basically acting as the physical representation of why Yanli shouldn't join the Jin Sect, Zixuan's confession to Yanli might have gone a little more smoothly and less awkward. Yanli is probably well aware of Zixun’s assholery because she’s been betrothed to Zixuan her whole life, but she also hasn’t seen him set up live targets or has had to verbally tear him to pieces because he insulted her little brother. And, as we know Yanli adores Zixuan and she has a very big heart so.

Jiang Cheng doesn’t want this. Wei Wuxian doesn’t want this. Nobody wants this. But, the Jiang Sect is still rebuilding. They are not exactly teeming with volunteers yet, and there are very few cultivators present within the sect. Then WWX learns WHY Jin Zixun got kicked out and learns that because of Zixun Wen Qing and Wen Ning are safe and…

Jin Zixun joins the Jiang Sect. He sticks out like a sore thumb amongst the disciples who gladly mingle with merchants and workers alike. Jiang Cheng tells Zixun that every disciple has to spend 6 months working as a servant to learn humility and respect for all aspects of sect life, before being allowed to join the ranks as a disciple. Jiang Cheng is of course, lying through his teeth. Jin Zixun predictably hates this but he doesn't have a wealth of options. Zixun got expelled for disobeying the direct orders of his sect leader for no known reason, and while I do think he must be at least halfway decent as a cultivator, he's not good enough for any Great Sect to take him in considering his reputation. Zixun could join a very minor sect, but I think that would be hard for him considering the opulence and prestige of the Jin Sect he's used to. He could become a rogue cultivator, but that does not seem his jam. Finally, he could become a commoner, and I think Zixun would actually rather die. So, Jin Zixun gets working. It's hard and grueling and a little humiliating for him to not be able to do something as simple as laundry, but I think this experience goes a long way towards correcting some of his more harmful views and tone down his arrogance a little.

Wen Ning doesn’t understand why the nephew of Jin Guanshan is so concerned with his happiness and well-being/constantly hovering over him. Jin Zixun is just still keeping up his campaign of making sure Wen Ning does not die as well as adding a new addendum that makes sure to not make Wen Ning mad. This escalates to the point where Zixun takes a blow meant for Wen Ning. Wen Ning is. A little weirded out honestly! But very thankful, and he's glad that Zixun is learning from his mistakes and becoming a better person. WWX comes to the conclusion that Zixun has been harboring feelings for WN since the cloud recesses and is very disturbed. Wen Qing is suspicious Zixun is a spy for JGS until she realizes he’s just not smart enough for that. Then against her will she starts to believe WWX’s theory which is just as disturbing to her. Jin Zixun is in hell.

After his tenure as a servant, Jin Zixun is slowly introduced as a disciple to the Jiang Sect. He finds himself easily frustrated as he is too used to the forms and rules of the Jin, and adapting to a whole new sword style is no small feat. During this time WWX, who still doesn't like him but they do start to build a grudging respect, once he has proven to be at least a little responsible, assigns him be the minder to the youngest shidis and shimeis, both because he think it will be good for Zixun but also because Zixun flounders in every interaction with Wen Yuan and WWX finds that funny. What I think truly cements Zixun's place within lotus pier is when a year into Zixun's time at lotus pier, WWX and JC are both bewildered, jealous, and tiny, infinitesimally, microscopically proud when the youngest disciples call Zixun Shige.

(To make clear Wen Ning and Jin Zixun do not and will not ever have feelings for each other. Wen Ning is too good for him. I like to think many years down the line Zixun marries the daughter of a fisherman who on his first day in Lotus pier tells him his face looks like a donkey ass when he insults the quality of the fish being sold, used to the meek and eager to please merchants of the Jin Sect and not used to Jiang vendors who will yell at you for being a deck and stare you in the eye and change a sign to make their prices higher if you displease them. The unnamed fisherman's daughter is also a little too good for him, but she loves him dearly and also won't hesitate to kick him into the lake). Jin Zixun overtime becomes someone who’s still kind of an asshole, but is softened by his role as the eventual minder of the babies, as well as his newfound respect of servants and the work they do after cleaning out chamber pots and doing laundry for 6 months.

I still like to think he’s still a little insufferable and pretentious ABOUT how much better he is than other people for his work as a servant which makes JC want to tear his hair out but still makes him infinitely more tolerable. Basically I’m imagining him as a less flamboyant Teruki from mp100. “I have seen the ways of a commoner and my eyes have been opened” “Jesus christ”. (It’s helped by the fact that while he’s saying this three children are hanging off of him giggling as he’s bent down to tie another’s shoes.)

So, this is how time travel Jin Zixun somehow fixes a lot of things and Zixun becomes less of an asshole out of both fear of being zombie punched and being made to earn his position within a sect rather than have one being handed to him.

I can’t fucking believe I wrote around 2,500 words about fucking Jin Zixun.

Oh god you’re actually right, JC stans have this obsession with letting JC have everything WWX has and leaving WWX with nothing. It’s like how they insist that WWX and JC are brothers (simply for the fact that they probably want JC to have a ‘big’ brother to fawn over him) but then also insist that WWX is JC’s subordinate and should serve him for life, despite that being the literal opposite of what brotherhood is. Or how WWX are brothers and it’s fine if JFM disregards WWX’s safety 1/5

and show an obvious lack of care for his well-being, but if WWX isn’t being treated badly, then it’s an obvious slight to JC. Because even though we get proof that JFM cares more about JC, he still apparently favours JC. And it’s this really creepy mindset, that WWX shouldn’t get to be happy if JC isn’t happy. Or that if JC is happy, then WWX should still be absolutely miserable, because that’s apparently a thing. And then of course the people who seem to love fics where JC ‘stands up 2/5

for himself and tells WWX what’s on his mind’ which essentially ends with him ranting about the same things he always does, WWX rebutting with some very valid facts and JC giving some weak arguments (WWX: you killed the Wen remnants, JC: well, you killed Wens during the war too” JC you fuckwit it was a war, he didn’t just go and massacre a village full of civilians). But these always end with JC storming off and 3/5

living his best life and WWX literally grovelling and begging for his forgiveness, and - these people are seriously missing the point! WWX would not care! He’s moved on! Yes he is probably still nostalgic for the past and does still care for JC, but he has moved on with his life. He’s happily married, has a new family, his son is safe and WWX gets to see him whenever he wants, he’s still able to see his BFF WN, he has a new purpose at the CR - seriously, the guy is happy with his life! 4/5

And we see that he has no desire to go home in the extras. JC is the only one still Clinton gtl the past. Or maybe he doesn’t want anything to do with WWX now - and in that case, can’t people just let them move on with their lives. But yeah, there’s this strange thing where JC stans are almost like extensions of him, and they all despise WWX for JC’s shortcomings. It’s honestly so weird. 5/5

Yeah, people seem to miss the fact that the conclusion of the “Twin Prides” relationship is... WWX deciding he doesn’t care anymore. He doesn’t want to see JC hurt, but he’s not going to grovel and argue and fight for the chance to go back to being JC’s punching bag. He doesn’t want JC to “forgive” him, he wants to be free to live his own life. He shows zero interest in making up with JC or returning to Lotus Pier, and in fact is more than a little put out at being forced to return. And yeah, it’s... genuinely kind of funny how many reconciliation fics have WWX rebutting all of JC’s arguments perfectly while JC offers weak nonsense at best tangentially related to the topic at hand in return... and then expect the audience to think JC’s in the right. “You killed people during a war so me starting a war against a civilian population for absolutely zero benefit is totally fine!” Uh-huh. Makes total sense. Also like. canonically WWX has a wonderful life with a loving family where he’s happy about pretty much every aspect of his existence aside from the results of his past while JC is a bitter jackass who everyone avoids, so... which of them is living their best life, exactly?

falls asleep on the couch: WWX of course. This one is not even up for debate. (Does WN even need sleep anyway?)

makes friends with the neighbors: Also WWX. Having said that, WN has his social anxiety thing going on so it takes him a while to warm up to people but he's a very good neighbor to have in the long run!

is the adventurous eater: LWJ. WWX eats plenty of weird stuff but his comfort zone is so wide that he doesn't really need to venture out of it. LWJ on the other hand has only a handful of things he's truly familiar with but is willing to try whatever WWX suggests. WN doesn't need to eat (though he canonically can) and I think unlike LWJ, he isn't particularly curious about WWX's recommendations, but I do think he's doing his very best to remember Wen cuisine to share with LSZ, which isn't relevant to the question but it's relevant to my own niche interests

hogs the covers at night: So you see. The thing is WN doesn't sleep but WWX will absolutely not hear of him standing guard outside, so the only comfortable way for everybody is to pile up blankets on WN so he doesn't get corpse-in-Cloud-Recesses levels of cold to the touch. Having said this, how dare you suggest Hanguang-jun would not protect his lovers from the cold!!! He'll make sure nobody needs to hog covers!!!

forgets to do the dishes: WWX, and neither LWJ nor WN remind him of that. If he doesn't want to do the dishes that's alright. He's been through Enough.

tries to surprise their partner more often: LWJ. MXTX didn't write the extras for me to disrespect him by answering anything else. Sidenote: WN and WWX are both great people to surprise because their reactions are so heartfelt and sweet!

leaves dirty laundry on the floor: WWX. But WN and LWJ don't mind picking up after him.

stays up til 2 AM reading: Between the human clock, the unsleeping corpse and the night owl? I guess WWX, but for him 2am practically counts as early evening.

sings in the shower: WWX. He's making up songs on the fly with perfect metric and poetry, by the way.

takes the selfies: I started typing WWX but then I thought that if you lose all your family the way WN did, you probably start treasuring photos and videos a lot, so this ask shall take a sharp turn towards angst and say WN pretty much documents their daily lives

What I Liked

hhhh the romance concept of pts and fjx is rly rly right up my alley, philosophy×mathematics with the core of "true self", it rly... rly ticks all my boxes. how do i describe itttt its like, its like... basically, the pursuit of truth is the most romantic of all lmao its like how i think that physics is inherently romantic, philosophy and math are like that too. basically. i love the abstract metaphors and the in-character but non-public knowledge allusions, they way they integrate and make parallels of each other in their own fields of study (moon of entelecheia, point on the number axis). ngl i didn't expect this kind of thing in my idol-setting showbiz wn.

i feel like pts and fjx rly embody the quote from Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, "Love does not consist of gazing at each other, but in looking outward together in the same direction". pts didnt hate fjx himself but hated how passive he seemed despite being at the eye of a storm of rumors, and fjx avoided him bc it’s his natural reaction to someone who doesn’t like him. but at the core they have similar values and outlooks in life, just different ways of going about in preserving them. so once the ice between them starts to melt into warmth, it's rly... fairly easy for them to fall for each other.

i love how zhichu wrote fjx. i feel like true socially awkward introverts r super rare in danmei-sphere. there r mostly taciturn ppl who don't like to speak (hello stoic cold mls) but they're not lacking in the social capability department. when i read abt fjx i lowkey think, wow, i feel like that too sometimes lmao. it's also nice that zhichu wrote how there r ppl who questioned if fjx has psychological problems and responded that there r ppl who r naturally more introverted, and ngl i'm guilty of thinking of that too, even though i myself am an extreme introvert and should have been able to understand and identify more w fjx sighs

ling yi is an entire precious disaster bb and yybl would not have been the same without him

tbh yybl brings back all the sweetest memories of my kpop stan days, reading it is like experiencing ur fav nugu group blow up into stardom. they even come w their own edgy boygroup title tracks lmao. hnn but yeah, there r so many memorable moments. the accidental cp fancam (exid's fancam that made them famous!), faulty audio that catapulted them to stardom (gfriend's infamous slipping performance when they danced on a wet stage?), fjx's mic box almost falling off and him saving it flawlessly (shinee's dream girl perf w minho's broken mic stand), their first win, their first concert... i cried reading the last 2 chapters abt their concert, it rly made me nostalgic. anw. the point is. stan kaleido.

night trip tho it became so meaningful im so shook, it was a drama ost n they described the scenes where the song was used n i got Goosebumps n then the hidden meaning of the lyrics was also revealed n how it's all referring to pts and fjx's love story sigh sigh sigh

ok ok ok but i can't not mention the absolutely beautiful imageries that kept being used to reference these two. from math to philosophy to the moon to spring/winter... they're fantastic, i love the beauty in the writing.

What I Disliked

the...pacing is kinda wack. tbh nearing the end of the story i was kind of tired of reading it, and not bc i'm bored (like for ghfod i was actually bored near the end). the ups and downs were just really... quite extreme. idk how to quite describe it, but it was tiring.

pts's attitude screams entitled a lot of the times. tbh he can't get away w most of the shit he does if he wasn't so rich. at least he's not a stoic ml ig

the author mentioned it too but it's def a v idealistic view of the entertainment industry. not rly a con but its also not rly a pro, but having come from kpop n seeing the netizen reactions for kaleido, i just think that they must be living in a much warmer, kinder parallel world compared to this one.
