UMG has lifted the blocks on that which was probably due to them assuming the uploads were releases of the soundtrack before it's official release, and so blocked the uploads till today. But now all I got is a claim on them which I don't mind (RIP if you live in Russia or Belarus though, sorry, lol). So, enjoy having all the Gravity Falls OST back up and available to freely listen to at last! UMG still sucks for blocking it the way they did, but at least they removed the block in the end which, I guess is all that matters.

soulmates, the shock of recognition, and the pain of separation (never let me go meta)

in the official trailer for never let me go, nuengdiao explains the legend of soulmates in plato's symposium. essentially, humans used to be two-headed, four-legged creatures, but the gods feared they were too powerful and separated them, leaving each half to search for the other. already, we can see palm and nuengdiao beginning to recognize each other as soulmates. but this realization comes with risks; after all, after two halves have finally found each other, the pain of another separation will be unbearable.

even when palm and nuengdiao meet for the first time, there is a gravity to their interaction that foreshadows how significant they will become to each other. palm greets nuengdiao with a bow and almost reverent "wai," which takes nuengdiao by surprise. (i believe it is rare for peers of the same age to greet each other with such respect, but correct me if i'm wrong.) obviously, palm has to show respect to his employer, but his reverence is also colored by his knowledge that (as his father told him) he will likely serve nuengdiao for the rest of his life.

whereas nuengdiao, who isn't privy to this information, eyes palm uncertainly, palm looks at nuengdiao like a man staring down the barrel of his future. it's not necessarily romantic or love at first sight per se, but palm seems conscious of the inevitability of his feelings for nuengdiao. it's the realization of "oh. he's the one i'm going to spend the rest of my life with. he's the one i'm going to fall in love with."

having made this realization, every interaction palm has with nuengdiao throughout the first episode becomes super-charged. the moment their hands touch as palm hands the unloaded gun to nuengdiao by the pool is when the realization sets in for nuengdiao. there's a jolt in the music, and the two look up at each other, startled. they look at each other with open vulnerability, both wrestling with the feeling of being known on some deep, subconscious level.

as the two become closer and more comfortable with each other in the following episodes, they begin to verbalize this feeling that they have found their soulmate in one another. at the shooting range, palm tells nuengdiao that he imagines he is protecting someone he loves, someone he can't live without. the unspoken but apparent implication is that this someone is, or will be, nuengdiao. (side note: a corollary to the rhetoric of soulmates at play here is the rhetoric of body and mind, which cannot exist without the other. i discuss this more here.)

in the scene at the shooting range, it's palm who utilizes the language of soulmates. when they are discussing plato's symposium at the beach, the roles are reversed. nuengdiao speaks of a person's quest to find their other half, and it is palm that asks if he believes his other half is searching for him (a parallel to nuengdiao asking who palm thinks of when he pull the trigger). in both scenes, palm and nuengdiao answer each other's question with a meaningful look that says "it's you."

the construction of palm and nuengdiao as soulmates - and as people who are aware that they are soulmates - is how we know nuengdiao is lying when he later tells palm that someone like him won't be able to make him happy, as shown in the trailer. in truth, he needs palm to be happy. since there's a target on his back, nuengdiao is likely trying to push palm away in order to protect him. but what happens when two halves are torn apart after being whole once more?

real-life issues with co-dependency aside, in the context of this story, palm and nuengdiao need each other to survive. but live or die, they will do it together.

i'll end this post with an excerpt from plato's symposium that ties in well with the OST ("living for you") and the english title of the series (never let me go):

“[When] a person meets the half that is his very own, something wonderful happens: the two are struck from their senses by love, by a sense of belonging to one another, and by desire, and they don’t want to be separated from one another, not even for a moment. These are people who finish out their lives together and still cannot say what it is they want from one another.”

BLACK: what face claim from an anime, comic book, or cartoon do I associate with you?

Oh, this was another hard one. Of course, I associate you with the face claim I used in The Ever Young, but when I sat down and thought about just you as a person, I think the one I settled on was Urumi Kanzaki from Great Teacher Onizuka, just because she has the heterochromia, I feel like you have long hair (just a vibe I get), and she has a more mature look to her rather than a really young one, since I don’t think you’re someone who looks super childish.

WHITE: what flame type and box weapon do I think you’d have in the khr!verse?

As mentioned in the other personalization prompt, I really do headcanon you with Sky Flames in the khr!verse. As far as box weapons go, while it’s an unconventional one, I do see your Box Weapon as a Sky Turtle. And not like a tiny little turtle, but a very large one, almost a tortoise. Of course, I am going off the spiritual meaning of turtles as being associated strongly with wisdom and a feeling of being grounded, which I feel both fit you as a person.

RED: what aesthetics do I associate with you?

Oversized sweaters. Sharing shows with someone you love. The lure of the unknown and paranormal. Solving puzzles. Making connections, reaching out to those in need. RAINBOW: if i were to write a khr sequel, following Tsuna’s demise, and could only use my reader’s as characters, who would you be?

Though the answer makes a) no canonical sense as the Arcobaleno are no longer needed as of end of manga and b) is a little sad, given the curse of the Sky Arcobaleno, I do see you as the next Sky Arcobaleno.
