A Very Rare Medieval Pocket Sundial Discovered in Germany
A rare Medieval sundial, which is approximately the size of a matchbox was discovered in the old town of Marburg, Germany.
According to a statement from Marburg University, students were digging a church site in the town when they discovered the sundial. The sundial is constructed of bronze and wood.
The old clock, which is thought to be from the late medieval era, is thought to have belonged to the Brethren of the Common Life, a monastic order that was founded in the Netherlands in the late 14th century. It was a community established by Gerard Groote, a Dutch Catholic deacon. Eventually, the Brethren spread to the Netherlands, Germany, and Switzerland. They settled in the old monastery structure from 1527, situated in the upper part of Marburg.
“The sensational find provides a clear insight into the meeting of a high level of knowledge in astronomy and mathematics with specialized craftsmanship on the threshold from the Middle Ages to modern times,” explains the head of the educational excavation,” Professor Dr. Felix Teichner said in a press statement.
According to Professor Teichner, of the Department of History and Cultural Studies at the Philipps University of Marburg, it’s the first time an object like this has been found in Hesse, the German state, and not many such sundials are left.
Archaeologists compared the unusual find with a similar one discovered by archaeologists in a Swiss ministry to identify the artifact. According to Teichner, they still don’t know why the sundial was discovered in the specific location.
Ancient clocks called sundials tracked the sun’s position throughout the day to determine the time. They are made up of a flat plate and a gnomon, which, when the sun shines, casts a shadow on the plate. Sundials have been around since at least 1500 BCE.
When this specific sundial is opened, a hole that was intended to hold a stick for marking the sun’s shadow is visible.
Portable sundials have existed since ancient times, and by the 1600s, some Europeans were carrying pocket-sized sundials.
Excavations at the site are continuing, in the hopes of unearthing more rare finds.

Assignment #2
Annotated Bibliography
Dewidar, Khaled M. “The Pantheon.” Research Gate, British University in Egypt, 24 June 2019, https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Khaled-Dewidar/publication/310597898_The_Pantheon/links/5832c05808ae004f74c32e49/The-Pantheon.pdf. Accessed 21 December 2023.
Khalen Dewidar, Professor at The British University of Egypt discusses the religious significance of the Roman Pantheon in correlation to its structural engineering. Khalen addresses a number of significant features that are imperative to my study. We learn about the Ancient Roman religion, architecture, religious tolerance and transition, and cultural heritage. My paper will discuss the historical significance of the monument and its functionality as a church and this resource will aid in looking at the history to tie into the present.
Hannah, Robert. “The Pantheon as a Timekeepers.” El Soliel Temps, University of Otago, December 2009, https://www.elsolieltemps.com/pdf/gnomonica/235.pdf. Accessed 21 December 2023.
Robert Hannah, Professor of Classics at the University of Otago, NZ researched artifacts from the Pantheon and analyzed their significance to both physical purpose and symbolic representation. Hannah focused on the time during the creation of the Pantheon and pre-development. He explored the timekeeping systems and how the monument plays a role in the creation of sundials and gnomonics. Hannah takes the physical evidence and ties it together with the symbolic meanings relating to Roman gods and goddesses. This will be useful in tying into my research paper as we learn about the historical significance in relation to time keeping and how this ultimately shapes the timekeeping we see today.
MacDonald, William Lloyd. The Pantheon: Design, Meaning, and Progeny. Harvard University Press, 2002.
William MacDonald, architectural historian specializing in Roman architecture shares an analysis of the Pantheon identifying historical influences on future architectural developments based on its design and symbolic meanings. MacDonald’s research stems from extensive research and archaeological evidence. During his book he touches on deconstructing the design, breaking down the materials used, and exploring the significance of the various features such as oculus’ and rotunda’s. He later ties in the architectural design to inspiration and influence on future structures such as the St. Paul’s Cathedral in London. This book will assist in addressing the Pantheon’s significance by inspiring future structures. I intend on using the research from the architectural analysis to build the argument.
Marder, Tod A., and Mark Wilson Jones, editors. The Pantheon: From Antiquity to the Present. Cambridge University Press, 2015. Accessed 20 December 2023.
Tod Marder, art historian and Mark Jones, architectural historian present a collection of essays by various scholars researching the Pantheon’s history,
architecture, and cultural significance from different periods. The collection of essays will provide insight into the cultural significance throughout time. This will allow me to gain a better understanding of how the historical significance has evolved along with how society viewed the monument. Essays are drawn from a vast background of contributors including experts in architecture, art history, literary studies, and more. This provides more diversity in perspectives which will be insightful to my research. It is also noted that the essays do carry a general theme of innovation, symbolic interpretation, and cultural representation.
“Pantheon Rome | Basilica of Santa Maria ad Martyres.” Pantheon Roma, https://www.pantheonroma.com/home-eng/. Accessed 21 December 2023.
The “Pantheon Rome '' is a resource for visitors who are interested in visiting the monument in today’s world. While it is limited in information and does have a promotional focus on tourism, it does provide insight on practical information for visiting the site. The resource includes a brief overview of the Pantheon, describing the Pantheon’s features including the oculus, rotunda, coffered ceiling, and bronze doors. Shares information on visiting the sign and touches on a basic level of the cultural and architectural influence. This source is helpful for my research as it provides insight to the functionality of the monument today. It takes a step away from looking at the Pantheon from the lens of what it was when it was built and looks at it as how a tourist would.
Schuddeboom, Feyo L. “The Conversion of Temples in Rome.” Journal of Late Antiquity, John Hopkins University Press, 2017, https://web.archive.org/web/20190127205739id_/https://muse.jhu.edu/article/670877/pdf. Accessed 21 December 2023.
Feyo Schuddeboom, an archaeologist specializing in late Roman and early Christian archaeology challenges the traditional interpretations of the Pantheon in relation to religious conversion. Schuddenboom focuses on rejecting the symbolic emphasis, criticizing the simplistic views and arguing that the focus overlooks the complex social and economic factors during the period. It is beneficial to include this research in my article as there are differing views to take into consideration. The focus of my paper is on the historical significance of the Pantheon and it would be close-minded to assume that everyone shares the same thoughts. As such, I wanted to include a contrary research article to look at the other side of the argument. Schuddenboom does an effective job simulating debate with this article as he challenges established viewpoints and does draw on a wide array of archaeological and historical evidence to base his claims.
“The Pantheon.” University of Washington, 9 August 2004, https://depts.washington.edu/hrome/Authors/asc1/ThePantheon/pub_zbarticle_view_printable.html. Accessed 21 December 2023.
This website provides a general overview of the Pantheon addressing topics of historical background, architectural features, and cultural significance. I will primarily be using this source to get a better understanding on the historical significance of the Pantheon as a dedication to the Roman gods under Emperor Hadrian. While it is limited in depth, it does provide a brief outline of historical aspects to help start off my research.
Thun, Erik. “The pantheon in the middle ages — Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey.” Research With Rutgers, 1 January 2015, https://www.researchwithrutgers.com/en/publications/the-pantheon-in-the-middle-ages. Accessed 21 December 2023.
Erik Thun, a historian specializing in medieval Rome and the Papacy examines the Pantheon during the Middle Ages. There are some conflicting views regarding the usage of the Pantheon during the Middle Ages, Thun argues that its usage during this period was significant and acted as a symbol of imperial continuity for the subsequent rulers. He touches on the religious significance in the evolution from a pagan temple to a Christian church. This source will be useful in looking at a period that was seemingly overlooked by a number of other historians. I intend on using this source to touch on the historical significance during a generally neglected period for this monument.
Waddell, Gene. “Creating the Pantheon.” Lerma, College of Charleston, 24 June 2019, https://en.lerma.it/erma_assets/BookStore/Preview/00012158-preview.pdf. Accessed 21 December 2023.
Gene Waddel, an architectural historian, dives in design and construction of the Pantheon. Waddel challenges the traditional interpretations of the Pantheon’s construction with alternative interpretations based on empirical evidence. Furthermore, there is a focus on the Roman concrete which Waddel highlights as innovative and delves into its composition, casting methods, and structural capabilities. I intend on using this book to look at the historical significance and functionality. One of the challenges I may run into while using this source is the technical language pertaining to architectural concepts.
Williams, Caitlin. “A Study of the Pantheon Through Time.” Union | Digital Works, July 2018, https://digitalworks.union.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1640&context=theses. Accessed 21 December 2023.
Caitlin William explores the Pantheon's cultural and artist influence across different periods. This article will aid my research in increasing my understanding of the cultural and artist impacts as a result of the creation of this monument. Williams also analyzes the transformation into a Christian church and its use throughout history. As my paper addresses the functionality of a church today, this will be assistive in supplementing the additional sources I have analyzing the Pantheon as a church throughout history.

In class last week, I realized that I REALY need to get things moving. I had prototyped the main mechanics for my game last week (or was that two weeks ago?). Now that I had decided on the main mechanics, I had to figure out how the game would progress, and how the I’ll introduce those mechanics. Then I’d need to create the assets for each level and assemble everything. I also needed to think of some kind of theme and setting for the game.
For the theme and setting, I decided that it would be a snowball factory. In the prototype, the player is represented by a white ball and the environment structure is blue. I could have easily made the game about golfing, but I think that’s already been overdone.
The first level will be a winding maze. By incorporating twists and turns, the player will understand how the player moves. The player’s position isn’t moved when the player presses and arow key; a force I added to the player’s snowball. The snowball won’t simply stop moving because the player let go of the arrow keys. Turns cannot be made instantly eighter.
In the first level, I also want the player to become acquainted with the idea that their snowball will grow as they collect smaller snowballs. Because the player’s snowball will be growing, I want the maze to grow too. The area that the player moves in should be small at first, so that players can easily see that there is a path they should be following. Eventually, the player will outgrow that space and the area will need to be made wider.
This scaling of the maze is my biggest problem. I started by creating a pixel art map in Photoshop. Then, I imported it into Maya as a reference so that I can model on top of it. One of the issues that I encountered was that the size of the maze is too large to be rendered in Maya’s camera. I’m sure the default settings are there for a reason, and I’m wondering if this is a sign that my maze is just too big and may cause performance issues in Unity.
There is a lot about Maya and 3D modeling that I don’t know. I’ve dabbled with it in the past but haven’t made anything or finished any projects. I’ll need to find some tutorials or something. Gnomon (a popular school for computer graphics) has a platform with a lot of workshops. I think I’ll start with their free trial.
In class, I also said that I’d take an agile approach to developing the game. That means that I’ll add features every week while maintaing a stable build of the game. However, I still need a plan for what features I’m going to add and what each level will be about, even if I can’t finish it all. It would be a god Idea to create a Game Design Document and Technical Design Document. These might be used as deliverables in case the game project goes nowhere. I think these documents could demonstrate the things I write about the literature review.
I haven’t worked on the literature review in almost a month. I need to put together a plan for how I’m going to tackle that as well.

Feast yr eyes & shelves on November’s SPD Recommends *Backlist*!
Ten more titles that continue to rock our world:
1. Real: The Letters of Mina Harker and Sam D’Allesandro - Dodie Bellamy and Sam D’Allesandro
“Although Dodie was leading ‘in competition for grossout — but that’s such a yawn since being female all the cards are stacked on my side,’ in the end Sam won for shock and extremity — he died. Dodie’s last letter (1993) is a homage to him (’To look as precisely as possible at the everwavering presence…’) and a series of inventions on mortality in the time of AIDS. The prose is pitched so high it’s thrilling. The letter is a summit of writing on sex and death, a garden in which the void prospers. ‘Sam, I never dreamed that playing dead could make you feel so alive.’” —from the preface by Robert Glück
2. Directed by Desire: The Collected Poems of June Jordan
"Sharply critical of nationalism, separatism, chauvinism of all kinds, as tendencies toward narrowness and isolation, she was too aware of democracy's failures to embrace false integrations. Her poetic sensibility was kindred to Blake's scrutiny of innocence and experience; to Whitman's vision of sexual and social breadth; to Gwendolyn Brooks' and Romare Bearden's portrayals of ordinary black people's lives; to James Baldwin's expression of the bitter contradictions within the republic." —Adrienne Rich
3. The Vineyard - Fanny Howe
"If I could talk about divinity to the boss / it would not be pretty." —Fanny Howe, from 'Servitude'
"The breath that animates Howe's poetry seems to blow, not from a contemporary world of 'materials' and 'individuals' but from one of radical mystical belief." —San Francisco Chronicle
4. Heavenly Breakfast: An Essay on the Winter of Love - Samuel R. Delany
“When you and I live so closely that touch and smell are suddenly half of what we communicate, new laws govern the interchanges as different as strong and weak particle interactions...” —Samuel R. Delany
"In HEAVENLY BREAKFAST we see the genesis of the alternative living arrangements portrayed in Delany's novel Dhalgren (1974)." —James Warner
5. The Granite Pail: The Selected Poems of Lorine Niedecker
"One's first impulse, after awe, on reading THE GRANITE PAIL is a double dose of shame: shame at not being more familiar with her work; shame at ever having complained of the narrowness of one's life." —Carolyn Kizer
6. The Black Heralds - Cesar Vallejo (tr. Rebecca Seiferle)
From the publisher: Vallejo radically and fundamentally challenges the canon of Western culture as no other Latin American writer. THE BLACK HERALDS is Vallejo's first book and contains a wide range of poems, from love sonnets in which he struggles to free his erotic life from the bounds of Spanish Catholicism to the linguistically inventive sequence, "Imperial Nostalgias," where he parodies with considerable savagery the pastoral romanticism of Indian and rural life.
7. Areas Lights Heights: Writings 1954-1989 - Larry Eigner
"Live thinking—rather than 'theory'—about poetry & prose & living & dying, often starting from or turning into poetry as easily as rivers & puddles become clouds become rain....Starting from anywhere at hand (often with 'input' from 'media'), ending somewhere we're surprised to get to." —Jackson Mac Low
8. The New World Border - Guillermo Gómez-Peña
"Gómez-Peña muses, often tongue-in-cheek, on matters of race, nationality, language, and identity. With a heady mix of pop culture, provocative iconography, political satire, ethnic stereotypes, and guerrilla theory, he explores 'the territory of cultural misunderstanding.'" —The Village Voice
9. Useful Knowledge - Gertrude Stein
"USEFUL KNOWLEDGE is pleasant and therefore it is very much to be enjoyed." — Gertrude Stein in her 'Advertisement for this Book.'
10. THE PAPER CHASE - John Jay Osborne, Jr.
Robert Clark, former Dean of The Harvard Law School, has said "THE PAPER CHASE is one of the most important books ever written about legal education in the United States."

hm. thinking about the connection between wind and time again. specifically with regards to venti, now, because i got him and am very happy about it.
so! venti's e. looks a little bit like this:
this shows both pressed/held e. the main sigil on it is always facing a set angle from venti. there are several other ‘spokes’ placed evenly around it.
is venti's skill meant to represent a sundial?
a sundial consists of a gnomon, oriented towards true north, and a plate onto which the gnomon’s shadow is cast. in this case, the gnomon is the largest anemo sigil; the spokes and other parts of the wind domain form the plate the shadow is cast onto. a sundial makes sense, too, since it’s considered a more ‘archaic’ method of timekeeping.
the fact that the gnomon does not always align with true north, but instead aligns/is near to venti's position? hm. i'm not sure what it could mean yet. but i really think this supports wind 🤝 time connection.

Moonsummer: Prologue
Have you ever gone to such passionate ends for something eternally dispassionate to your problems? All the chaos, the hurdles, for something you’re never certain is real and doesn’t care to know you exist? Why must this be the most favorable punchline to the most cosmically despicable joke imaginable?
A sundial has been erected in the village square for over ninety-nine years. We only know this because of me, one of the few that bothers to keep track of how long it’s been and can somehow answer simply when asked. Not even the headman, who doesn’t look an increment over twenty despite being over sixty, ever cares to remember and sometimes asks me about it’s age whenever I go to visit him. I have to walk by it every morning, evening, and occasional afternoon and over time, I feel like it mocks me. It gets to stand there, useless to no one because no one else notably acknowledges it, perfect as it appears. The hardest stone, with gypsum fragments peppered in its base, smooth slate with barely a chip fallen from its circumferential edge nor of its gnomon. It looks so perfect, so flawlessly antique it almost sickens me that every time I walk out, nary a soul goes up to it to utilize it’s crafted purpose. [sigh] At the same time, who am I to quibble? What does this sundial do that I haven’t done for myself after over fifteen years?
I notably asked myself this as I luckily woke up today, dawn seductively making her way up to my consciousness once more. About as awake as a milligram of yeast is getting its heat, I steadily peer onto the floor boards over the edge of my bed. I was grateful enough to see the beam hit the 7th chalk line so I definitely could get ready easier than most of last week. I scanned the floor for any insects, content to only find a mere pillbug near a dust mite.
Then came the best part of the minute as I rolled over to see that she was still in bed, back facing me. A two by three foot slab of visible bronze skin, glistening from the oil I helped apply last night. I steadily inched my hand up to her left shoulder, with a tear creeping out as I felt the multiple scars that told me of the rapiers responsible for these. This adult back was an artistic yet historical horror, malicious marks that no one could bless away no matter the remedy because, personally, they tell a story I’ve yet to hear. They’ve constantly reminded me of how gutless yet scared I am to just whisper her the question, regardless of how open we’ve been after so long,
“Who are you really, Cassius?”
I pulled my hand back, thankfully she didn’t notice. I rolled back to shift a leg out the sheets, to stop quickly after feeling a damp, goopy cloth on the ball of my exposed foot. I was the right amount of tired to only take a deep breath in muffled revulsion as I immediately recognized the piece of fabric… that was used… to pleasure… my girlfriend.
After cleaning “that” off, I tiptoed into the kitchen to see the grain was in the pot ready to boil. I turned on the heat in the midst of getting the brown sugar and some berries from the bag on the other counter. A couple minute wait goes by, and I hear a familiar creak from the bedroom. Awaken, she has. I turn to see she’s fast as ever to appear before the door, leaning confidently on the frame as it appears she woke up in a snap and is ready to seize. The darkest crimson of her long hair being the first thing I see to ignore the fact that she’s still nude.
“A morning of morns, love,” she yawned out like a grizzly, “bubbling the grain?”
“Yeah,” I said, trying to hide my smile, “something simple for today since we’re gonna be low on vittles for a couple days.”
“Pssh, you say that as if we get much else,” noting with a cheeky scoff, “Then again, this evening I’m certain me and the boys are netting some good ones. Boss said he’ll provide a catch just for me~~.”
“Sure, you should catch those clothes outside before somebody takes them like before.”
“Shit, you’re right! Gimme a sec.”
Cass went into the bathroom which leads to our clothesline outback. I began stirring the grain, taking in its charming warmth. Makes me grateful again that my “family” was as charitous to leave me enough for this old house. Still have regrets, but like this… well aged meal, I should be appreciative that things turned out well. Cass came back in, clothes tucked in her arm, and is still in the nude.
“Aren’t you cold? You gonna p-”
“Nope and nope right now,” she chipperly responded, “I’m in a pretty good mood after last night.”
“I figured with the evidence I stepped in this morning.”
“I thought you were gonna wash it before bed.”
“You said you would since I got to finish.”
“C’mon, you kne~ew I’m a heavy sleeper ‘specially after sex so this time it w-”
Before she could finish, I turned off the heat to slowly look towards here with a smile she knows can chip her confidence, if only for a second. She huffed, instantly lost the argument the moment our eyes squarely locked.
“Damn it... M’kay, I’ll make up for your squeeshy morning,” she slumped her way over to my shoulder with a cornered smirk, “only cause you bewitched me again and since you’re cooking this time.”
Cass slid her arm around my left side, now doing her typical cheek to cheek begging method, “Can I at least stay nude for just a little while longer?”
“Sure,” I said relievedly as we pecked lips real quick, “but clean your bowl before dressing.”
She plopped her clothes on her chair as I gave her the steamy breakfast and put the washed berries in the center of the table. She waited for me to sit down before digging in. She really was in a good mood, she’s always respectful to me but not as patient and awake as this morning. As we started talking about the happenings of the village and her job buddies, I wondered if there was more than the potential “good catch” this evening that had her in such spirit. I’m probably overthinking it, but I don’t know if last night was better than some of the others. It’s never like Cass is hiding something beside her past, but that has never been something I felt could be brought up and not feel too wrong for pressing. Again, it could be just me, but something about Cass’s spirit this morning made me feel different. Different, in a good way.
After eating, we cleaned our bowls. I went back into the bedroom to see the sunlight reaching the 2nd chalk line which means I was on schedule. I got dressed but I decided to not wear my vest today. Not sure why, but I just tucked my tie into my shirt since I didn’t have a clip. I walked back in to see Cass on the hay couch having her jumpsuit on but not fully zipped, still with no top on as she threw her hair back, revealing more of her rosy nipples before facing towards the kitchen.
“Got time to do my hair?” she requested over the shoulder, back once more facing me.
“Of course,” I said calmly, feeling at ease that the morning was running as smoothly as it was.
Sat down to methodically comb these dark red locks as she stared at the front door, I kept pace with braiding her mohawk just how she likes it. Firm up top but not tight all the way down. After a couple minutes, as I was nearing the end of the braid I noticed the scars again. I slowed down for a moment, intrusively imagining countless brutal events in a flash before recollecting myself to finish. I was thankful she didn’t notice the pause. She took a sec to appreciate the work before bouncing to do my hair. I faced the bedroom doorway as I felt those admittedly big hands of hers caress my hair gently before combing it out. I wanna say this is what I’ve come to love about her. A woman bigger than me, far stronger than I could ever do for myself, the body of someone that I can’t help but say was tormented, and she enjoys treating me with genuine grace. I know we helped each other out long ago but, deep down, I feel like she’s too nice to me after all this time. I’m not sure, I don’t know what’s happening with me this morning. I know I love Cassius, she loves me back wholeheartedly, so why does it feel like something’s out of place? Nothing is wrong, but something feels incomplete.
“All good,” Cass says, patting me playfully.
I shake my head, not only to feel the braiding but to wake from the daze.
“Thanks, hon’,” I said putting the braid over my shoulder.
I grab my satchel and Cass grabs her tackle box after finally putting her top on and zipping up her jumpsuit. We put our shoes on and headed out the door. Walking outside, I took in the fresh, cool air of the morning and for the first time in a long while, it felt like things were gonna go my way somehow.
Cass closed the door and whispered, “I know, right? Sex can make for a breath-taking morning.”
“Shut up,” I flusteredly giggled with a playful jab to the arm, “I’ll see you later.”
“Sorry sorry, see you tonight, Aussie.”
We shared one more kiss before she jogged off, waving goodbye as I waved back genuinely.
“See you… Cass,” I whimpered in awe.
I slowly let my arm down, standing in the same spot for longing than desired. I peered passionately at my girlfriend until she was the size of my pinky finger, then I started to walk to my job staring coldly at the ground.
The dirt felt right, damp but not muddy. The breeze felt complimentary to the gradual warmth of the sun, especially on my neck. I honestly couldn’t feel my steps as I went along, like I was just floating along as I felt empty. Not empty in a negative sense, but hardly any other thought I had stayed for more than a second. What came over me? Was I late? No, I kept track; I know I can’t be late? Was I malnourished? No, that breakfast still feels filling to me; ate two whole bowls of grain. Was it... love? More than before when I haven’t felt any different about her? I love her, I know I do, but what is convincing me otherwise? Not otherwise, but variably? Seriously, what other feelings could I have for that beautiful and outgoing and strong and polite an- OOMPH!
My mind played a gag as I somehow walked right into the square’s sundial, stumbling from the pain in the stomach before falling over onto the ground. I writhed for a bit before looking to see the sharp triangular tip of the gnomon spark for a moment. I instantly grew puzzled, so I got up and looked at the big instrument. It wasn’t long before I recognized something that I should have for the past fifteen years… the sundial was facing east. Nobody could even use this because it’s… always been positioned wrong. Something that looks so perfect, and yet could hardly do the one thing it was meant to do for almost a century.
That was when another thought occurred to me. A more deeper thought, one that stuck with me for the many weeks that I’d knowably work through to finally answer it with everything and everyone coming together:
How does time move forward?

Concept artist
- Scott Robertson
https://www.creativebloq.com/features/an-interview-with-concept-artist-scott-robertson - Information below from an interview.
*When he was 14, Scott Robertson finished sixth in Ohio’s famous Soapbox Derby, in a car he’d designed and built with his father. Aside from being an unexpected claim to fame, this is telling for two reasons: it highlights the prolific concept artist’s early love of vehicles, and foretells his later career working at the cutting-edge of design and technology. Best known for his vehicle work, Robertson has worked across a staggering range of projects – from feature films like Steven Spielberg’s Minority Report and Hot Wheels animated series Battle Force Five, to theme park attractions like the Men in Black ride at Universal Studios. He’s designed consumer products including wheelchairs and bikes, written 13 books on art and design though his publishing company Design Studio Press, and coproduced more than 40 educational DVDs with The Gnomon Workshop. It all started with cars. “Some people just grow up loving things with wheels,” he shrugs. “It was that simple at first. As I got older, that fascination with the function and design of vehicles continued.”*
Unlike other concept artists I have looked at, Robertson likes the use of colour and I think the colour works really well to highlight his design work. His artwork stand out to me, as he focuses on the whole image. With previous concept artists, there is usually a character and a main focal point highlighted, which is generally not the case with Robertsons artwork. The first image really inspired me, as the details on the mountain and water is beautiful. My island is a fantasy island, using bright colours and realistic detailing, which I would like to display in my own artwork.

mkay these are just my super discombobulated thoughts on duke’s powers. excuse how unorganized this is lol. when i do things like this i tend to ramble. i was doing this as a reference for writing duke’s abilities and got carried away.
duke: photokenesis
-precognition
-retrocognition
his blood/cells ???
when gnomon tells him something he can tell whether or not he’s lying. we don’t know if this is just for family or if he could eventually become a walking lie detector.
he can also amplify or kickstart the latent powers of other metahumans but not on his own (yet?) gnomon had to set up a generator of sorts to make it happen but duke was the key to it all. alternatively, could he dampen their abilities?
gnomon also says something about “infinite blood”, which means duke might have the potential to be immortal (according to the dc wikia). this makes me wonder if the immortal men’s invitation would eventually extend to him since they couldn’t get his mother to join.
either daryl or his mom triggered duke’s own powers. ya girl has to go back and read all-star batman again for clues BUT it looked like either seeing his mom use her powers or intense emotion triggered it. elaine was telling duke he was special (“you’re not special” but joker toxin nshit), and all of that with daryl pressing him abt the riddle might’ve overwhelmed him and boom goes the dynamite.
his growth with his powers isn’t really shown because duke isn’t really shown fffff. he used the lantern ring to make that big ass construct of the machine joker destroyed, and we also saw him create another construct on his own in nightwing #5 (during night of the monster men), in his solo title he used his precognition and retrocognition. he doesn’t have anyone to train him, his mother is out of her mind and his father is locked up (i guess??? not that he’d be training him anyway lmao. i also have a theory abt gnomon not necessarily being evil, just against his son fighting alongside bruce). no other meta with psychic abilities or photokenisis has popped up to say “yo wyd lets help you out” so i’m gonna assume that duke is probably just figuring it all out himself or using google lol. his powers are wild and i need more info pls and thanks.
scott snyder blink twice if i’m onto something here.

You're Allowed To Sit And Rest + Did You Know You Are So Loved?
Tumblr media
my god, look at you: a beauty of the night, and yet you're still awake. please, for the love of god, lie down a while. your joins ache, your muscles fatigued. why do you keep standing when i've pulled out a chair? but i see it now, in your irises: you're afraid that if you stop going and stop thinking, you'll start feeling. what are you so afraid of? stop running. sit and let the sun fold over you like the gnomon of a sundial. we'll talk again after you've had your fill.
please, take this sprig of lavender as a token. press it between pages of a book, or hang it to dry, or tuck it behind your ear. and every time you catch a glimpse of those violet petals, remember the room you have rented in my heart – there's a plaque with your name on the door, no one else is moving in. you must know that you are so cherished, by so many more than just me.

Bhayle Amell
what are you trying to prove?
you're so scared of even the perception of abandonment that you lie yourself across the threshold and ask your guests to wipe their shoes on your sweater, thanking them when they do. why do you torture yourself like this? i know it's hard to acknowledge it with me here, but i'm worried for you. your cheeks are sunken, your muscles atrophied. if you keep breaking off pieces of yourself to hand out to anyone with the ghost of a smile, what will be left for you to tuck into bed? set your boundaries and set them hard. the world is not out to get you.
Garrett Hawke
did you know you are so loved? and i don't say that lightly.
