#George Wallace
Text
This Salon article by Ian Hanley-Lopez is well worth taking the time to read. Although it was written in Dec. 2013--BEFORE the age of Trump, it was prescient of the continued trajectory of the Republican Party towards a white nationalist agenda. The article describes:
How the indirect racist messaging of "dog whistle politics" began with George Wallace, using the language of being opposed to "arrogant federal authority," and being for "states’ rights," "law and order, running your own schools, [and] protecting property rights." Even though Wallace was a Southern Democrat (and later an Independent) the "dog whistle" strategies he employed were later appropriated by the GOP in the "Southern Strategy."
How the GOP's "Southern Strategy" slowly developed in the 1960s, when Goldwater began to push “states’ rights,” as well as “freedom of association." This strategy over time helped the Republican Party begin to appeal to those white voters who still held overt or covert racial prejudices.
How Kennedy and Johnson, by promoting civil rights legislation, turned the Democrats into the party identified with championing the civil rights of marginalized racial and ethnic groups.
How Richard Nixon fully embraced the "Southern Strategy," through his messaging of being for "law and order," and against the "forced busing" of children (to integrate public schools). As he gradually adopted this strategy, Nixon also turned against one of his own administration's earlier policies (developed by George Romney), which Nixon later derided as the "forced integration of the suburbs."
How, according to Hanley-Lopez, these changes in the racial strategies and policies of the diverging Republican and Democratic parties in the 1960s/early 1970s contributed to "the rise of racially identified parties," with a majority of white voters shifting to the GOP (which became "in fact, though not in name, the White Man's Party"), and the Democratic Party being associated with racial and ethnic minorities (as well as a smaller proportion of white voters, i.e., well-educated whites, especially white women). Echoes of Nixon's 1968 campaign ad in one of Trump's 2020 campaign ads
Hanley-Lopez mentions a 1968 Nixon campaign ad that focused on "exploiting the growing panic that equated social protest with social chaos." Above is the video of that 1968 ad: "The First Civil Right." Below is a transcript of the video:
TRANSCRIPT* (Music with snare drum and dissonant piano chords) MALE NARRATOR**: It is time for an honest look at the problem of order in the United States. Dissent is a necessary ingredient of change, but in a system of government that provides for peaceful change, there is no cause that justifies resort to violence. Let us recognize that the first civil right of every American is to be free from domestic violence. So I pledge to you, we shall have order in the United States. [TEXT: THIS TIME VOTE LIKE YOUR WHOLE WORLD DEPENDED ON IT. . .NIXON] [Color/ emphasis added.]
This 1968 Nixon campaign ad is eerily like at least one Trump 2020 campaign ad, "Abolished," which used some out of context video footage in order to exploit the fears of many white conservative voters regarding the Black Lives Matter protests and the poorly worded "Defund the Police" slogan.
youtube
Below is a transcript of the Trump campaign's 2020 "Abolished" video.
TRANSCRIPT*** [ Phone ringing/ Answering machine beeping/ background music. ] AUTOMATED FEMALE VOICE: You have reached the 911 police emergency line. Due to defunding of the police department, we're sorry but no one is here to take your call. If you're calling to report a rape, please press 1. To report a murder, press 2. To report a home invasion, press 3. For all other crimes, leave your name and number and someone will get back to you. Our estimated wait time is currently five days. Goodbye. [ TEXT: Joe Biden's supporters are fighting to defund police departments. Fox News, 6/6/20 | Violent crime has exploded. ABC News, 6/24/20 | You won’t be safe in Joe Biden’s America. | TRUMP   PENCE   KEEP AMERICA GREAT   20 ] TRUMP: I'm Donald J. Trump and I approve this message. [Color/ emphasis added.]
In conclusion, the barely covert racism in the GOP's political messaging that was so prominent during Trump's administration, and currently in the DeSantis Florida administration (among other GOP administrations) was not new. It was deliberately fostered by Republicans, starting in the 1960s, as they deployed their "Southern Strategy" to woo white voters who still had some overt or covert racial prejudices. The "Southern Strategy" relied on Republicans incorporating into their messaging strategies the kind of covert racist messaging that George Wallace used.
This strategy has unfortunately succeeded all too well.

Taxi Driver (1976, Martin Scorsese)
28/01/2024
Taxi Driver is a 1976 film directed by Martin Scorsese, written by Paul Schrader and starring Robert De Niro. Set after the Vietnam War in New York, it is about a vigilante with neo-noir and psychological detective elements.
The screenwriter Paul Schrader stated that he was inspired for the film's themes by European existentialism and in particular by Jean-Paul Sartre's Nausea and Albert Camus' The Stranger, as well as by the story of Arthur Bremer, who attempted in 1972 to assassinate Democratic US presidential candidate George Wallace. Particularly notable is the performance of Robert De Niro, defined by the American journalist Robert Kolker as "the last of the noir heroes in the noisiest world imaginable". The very young Jodie Foster won two BAFTAs in 1977 as Best New Actress and Best Supporting Actress (also for Bugsy Malone).
The film won the Palme d'Or at the 29th Cannes Film Festival in 1976 and was nominated for four Academy Awards, including the Best Film category in 1977. The American Film Institute placed it 52nd among the 100 best films of all time, while it ranked 17th on the list of the 500 best films in history according to the British magazine Empire. In 2012 it was placed in 31st place, ex aequo with The Godfather - Part II, in the ranking of the best films of all time drawn up by critics and published by the English magazine Sight and Sound, while in that drawn up by directors it found itself in fifth place. In 1994 it was chosen for preservation in the National Film Registry of the United States Library of Congress.

Political paper dolls from the 1960s. Each politician is given clothes the opposite of their images. George Wallace was a southern racist, hence the “Uncle Tom” costume. LBJ got a hippie costume.
This must have been published before June 1968.

If it ever has happened when was the last time a governor of a state was assassinated or shot by a assassin? Was it when finestein rose to power?
I'm pretty sure that the last time any Governor was actually shot in an assassination attempt was when George Wallace was running for President in 1972 while he was Governor of Alabama and was paralyzed from the waist down in a shooting at a campaign stop in Maryland. Other than that, I think the only relatively recent assassination attempt where a Governor was wounded was when Texas Governor John Connally was seriously wounded while riding in JFK's limo at the time of President Kennedy's assassination in Dallas. Of course, Connally was not the target of that shooting, but he was badly wounded.
Dianne Feinstein never actually served as Governor (she lost a race for Governor of California to Pete Wilson in 1990). As president of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, she assumed the mayorship when Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk were assassinated in City Hall by disgruntled former Supervisor Dan White in 1978.

I was looking at vintage political pins and found this one very amusing because if your entire platform is "Well, FDR was a Democrat in a wheelchair too" maybe you need to try harder, George

So, I had to use Instagram recently, and I immediately had to delete it again because all of my negative thoughts came RUSHING back.
That app is literally the death of me ugh.
Anyway, before I removed Instagram, I saw that the Largo had an amazing lineup recently: Anthony Jeselnik, Joe Mande, and Kumail Nanjiani. All so funny and...I can connect each one of them DIRECTLY to Bo Burnham! 👀
Tumblr media
Here's how:
Anthony: Easy. Bo and Anthony are good friends and I wrote about their relationship here
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Joe: A little harder. Bo appears to give advice (along with George Wallace) to Joe on how to win a comedy award in his 2017 special
youtube
Tumblr media
Kumail: Easy again. Bo is in Kumail's Academy Award-nominated film The Big Sick and Bo would often perform at The Meltdown, a performance space Kumail ran with his wife and Jonah Ray

So there you go! Now if Bo would just show up unannounced at the Largo again...a girl can dream! 🤞🏼

Keep it here for more comedy fun! ✌🏼🐔

Forrest Gump (1994, Robert Zemeckis)
01/11/2023
Forrest Gump is a 1994 film directed by Robert Zemeckis and starring Tom Hanks. Loosely based on the 1986 novel of the same name by Winston Groom, the film narrates the intense life of Forrest Gump, an American man with a lower-than-normal cognitive development who, thanks to a series of favorable coincidences, becomes a direct witness of important events of the history of his nation.
The film covers approximately thirty years of history of the United States of America: from the birth of the protagonist in the 1940s to approximately 1982. During these years Forrest met important figures of the second half of the 20th century such as Elvis Presley, John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, John Lennon, George Wallace and Richard Nixon, establishes a new climate of peace between the United States of America and China, becomes first a football star, coached at the University of Alabama by coach Bear Bryant, then a ping-pong star and participates in the Vietnam war and in a hippie gathering, without however really realizing the extent of the events he witnesses (and to which he sometimes contributes significantly).
Forrest Gump was positively received by both critics and the public, dominating the 1995 Oscars, taking home 6 statuettes, coming close to the record of 14 nominations set by All About Eve, Titanic and La La Land. The film is also in 11th place in the ranking of the 250 best films of all time drawn up vote by vote by IMDb users. In 1998 the American Film Institute placed it in seventy-first place in the ranking of the one hundred best American films of all time, while ten years later, in the updated list, it is positioned in seventy-sixth place.

Greenbull Is Basically One Piece’s Version Of George Wallace
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Seriously, the idea of a system held together by prejudice and inequality has been shown in real life and it’s based on people who have profited from such system or have been so indoctrinated into thinking it’s a good thing that they think any attack on it would bring instability. And I think Greenbull is a mix of both with an emphasis on the latter. He’s belief that bigotry can bring stability leads him to actually protect unfairness in the world and in a way causing more injustice than actual justice.
