So. We’re all looking for affordable quality supplies, right? Enter Kawaii Pen Shop! Their prices are generally reasonable, many of their items are on sale, they provide free intl. shipping (!!!), and their stuff is super cute!! They’ve even got that rare Mildliner pack! I’ve used all my things a few months now (this is a long overdue post lol) to keep this review true~

My experience ordering from them was great. They take Paypal so you can feel safe ordering online and their inventory is impressive. I got everything within the specified shipping window (~a month) but it all came in multiple packages so some things came far earlier than others which was really just a happy surprise!

Now, on to the items!

Fox Pencil Pouch - $6 - This thing holds so. much. I love the print and the material used is durable and hasn’t stained, cracked, faded, torn, or anything since I’ve got this in November. The only wear-and-tear visible are a few wrinkles on the material and a few loos threads on the inside seams and along the zip (which btw has had no problems). There isn’t any inner lining but a couple of pens have leaked a little on the inside but you can’t tell at all from the outside. Overall: 9/10

My Pencil Case - $5 - This is smaller than the fox pouch and great for daily use. I love the design (so simple and funny!) BUT the white does show a lot more wear. There are a few scratches and random marks and a tiny “chip” in the material but still pretty good since I have taken it out nearly every day for the last 6 months. There is a black alternative which would fix all these problems. The zipper works great and there is a darker inner lining. It also holds a lot more than expected! Overall: 8/10

10 pack Skinny Candy Washi - $6 - First off, the colors were not as pictured. I got slightly darker versions of them and a lot more greens. I didn’t really care but I know others might. The washi themselves are pretty good, slightly less sticky than other washi but that could be because they are skinny. The box they came in like collapses in transit but eh the washi was fine! They’re what you pay for. Overall: 7/10 

Cheeky Black Cat Gel Pen - $2 - Needle-point, roughly 0.38, with somewhat uneven ink flow. It doesn’t break but the lines do get thinner every once in a while; this gets better as you use it! I personally feel like the pen overall is too light but it’s still useable. I primarily like it for the cat ngl aha. I don’t think this would be a daily use pen. Overall: 6/10

Floral Paper Sticker Set - $3 - Some of the designs are not as pretty as the others but most I love. There are also a few with sayings that I still haven’t touched (like, “Happy Day” or “Thank you!”) that I didn’t think would be in there so just fyi! They stick great, can’t be removed, and aren’t removable so make sure you like where you place it! They’re also glossy so not all oens can write on them. Overall: 8/10

Pomegranate (I can’t find it anymore) - Donut - Black Floral - $3 - These washi’s aren’t the stickiest but they work well on paper, not so well on other materials or waxy paper. I loveee the designs so so much and am definitely getting more. Overall: 9/10

The Girl With All The Gifts

I recently finished the novel and decided to watch the movie. For a screenplay written by the novel's author, it was downright poor. As an adaptation, it's almost as bad as the Lightning Thief but as its own movie, it's still pretty awful and here's why: I understand the main problem with bringing a novel to life is that you can't very well have all your character's narrating their thoughts as on paper; you have to show your audience everything they do and hope to Haruhi they pick up their thoughts. The Girl With All The Gifts, however, relies heavily on characterization. The relationship of each character with their environment in the post-Breakdown world and the relationship of each character with each other. Melanie: she doesn't remember the world outside and she takes it all in any chance she gets. She is a child first and a hungry second and it shows. She loves Helen but is very aware of the danger she poses to her. Helen: she is aware of the world around her but doesn't care much for it. Her entire character focus is redemption for the sins of her past and impossible promises she made. She loves Melanie and barely tolerates everyone else. Caroline: she's a mixture of Helen and Melanie in that she is aware of the world around her and finds it damn fascinating. She is a scientist before a human being and to her, Melanie is nothing more than a walking collection of valuable samples. Eddie: he is a soldier with, as Helen puts it, a hardwired set of codes and rules by which to live by. He is a survivor above all else and the safety of himself and others is valued far above how comfortable they are with him. He treats Melanie as exactly as she is, a monster waiting to happen. Kieran: he is pretty much a mix of Melanie and Eddie. He's a child but also a soldier. He seeks approval and looks at the world he has never known with wonder and horror and is very aware of hos own shortcomings but he does as he is expected to do to ensure survival. He has virtually no opinion on Caroline, but Melanie, to him, is an animal he has been told is dangerous. Eddie is his god and Helen, his goddess. Now, the problem with the movie is that I didn't see any of this. For Melanie, I will say that they did a bang up job making me belkeve she was a child seeing the world for the first time. Hella impressive. The way she ran around playing with everything and reliving the only things she knows (slamming on the doors and calling whatever is inside a frigging abortion). Bang up job indeed. But I didn't see her self awareness. That childlike realization that the things everyone is afraid are synonympus with herself. She's a hungry and being too close to Helen, the only person she cares about, puts Helen in danger. And I missed that. It really didn't make her as sympathetic as it could have. Also, in the climactic fight with the leader of the hungry children, she displayed some unwarranted savagery. The screaming and the way she brutally beat him to death isn't what I expected from either the movie or novel version of Melanie. In the novel, it was a rescue mission gone wrong but in the movie she worked out that murdering him would make her feared amongst the children and it was simply a means to an end AFTER preaching to the others that they're just kids and shouldn't be killed. The novel handles it leagues better showing her struggling with her humanity for the majority of it before realizing that she doesn't have to choose between human or hungry, she's both and there are others like her. She tries to protect both groups for people the hungry kids and Helen's party but ultimately is FORCED to kill the kid. I did not buy that Helen loved Melanie. I watched it and I said to myself "This bitch is crazy." Yeah. From what I noticed, she seems more irrationally attatched to Melanke than Melanie is to her and it's kind of sad (not in the good way). She attacks Caroline in the movie after she makes one comment. One! In the novel it took a whilr and you could see how Caroline's voice was grating on her from the start. In the scene where Melanie attacked her, we sae her reacting in fear and slathering eblocker all over herself... but they went nowhere with that. Helen is never afraid of Melanie again and Melanie never poses a threat to her again. In the novel where it was easier to show her thoughts, we could see that she was almost always hesitant to touch Melanie again, not for her oen safety but at the girl's own insistence that she didn't like the feeling of wanting to hurt "Ms. Justineau". In the scene where she snaps at Eddie if he's ever killed a kid, I feels like contrived tension and she never follows up with her own story. Not saying the movie should have followed the book to a T but the scene felt pointless. I'll do Eddie next. Sargeant Parks, as he's known for most of the novel even in his own narrative, wasn't that baf in the movie. I got the sense that they were going for a hardass with a heart of gold but it made scenes with him feel cheap and not at all deserved. His treatment of Melanie is vastly toned down. In the novel, she's a monster waiting to happen and he wanted his gun pressed against her forehead when she does. As it goes on, she impresses him through her usefulness AND to be fair I did see that happening in the movie. The little scenes where he taps her shoulder and tells her "good job" but, like I said, it feels cheap. He doesn't hate her, not in the movie. He doesn't identify her as a hungry, he identifies her a generic risk. They started with him being generally the same, calling the kids "abortions" and not above torturing them with their own hunger to prove how dangerous they are, but that went away too quickly. The scene where Melanie shoots him didn't feel as deep as it could have because it was only a child who has killed before, mind you, shooting a man. If the relationship had been like it was, Parks hating her absolutely but then slowly changing his mind through a combination of Helen's whining, her usefulness and her awareness that she's a danger and needs to be restrained and, if necessary, killed. There was nothing about this man that made him seem as if he would kill a child which further highlights that Justineau's question was pointless. Caroline was an exposition dump and nothing more. I didn't buy her as a real threat. What made her scary in the books was how cold and indifferent to things she was. How tenaciously she would chase Melanie because, as she reminded them time and time again, she was her property. Heck, Helen refused to leave the two of them alone and had to be coaxed away. What Melanie meant to her, was that she was the last remnants of her entire life's research. The movie had her seem like she was special somehow and, yes, in the novel Caroline states that Melanie was the smartest for the group, but that ultimately meant nothing. She was just something. Anything. In the movie, Melanie seemed to get along with Caroline if even on a professional level. She wasn't scared of her. And that in itself was fine, to be honest. As it's own movie, Melanie being okay near Caroline isn't a problem, but it really seems lime Caroline was just there to explain things to the audience and trigger a few cutscenes. In the Wainright House, she explains the entire hungry plot. When they see the fungus, she explains what those are. When they find Rosie, she explains that. She was just there to explain things! She hardly felt like her own character. She did one thing and that was gas Melanie, Helen and Eddie. But it didn't feel real, you know. Nothing came of it except for another exposition dump. In the novel, she found out exactly what she set out to find out and realized the futility of it all. There wasn't much to be done about Kieran. For all the things he actually does in the novel, he was an okay portrayal. I rather liked how in the novel he was running away piss scared rather than being sent out but those are just semantics, he was okay for what he eas on the movie. Now for functional problems. Rosie was an ex machina. Those two soldiers at the start that were manhandling Helen ARE FUCKING RIDICULOUS! They don't answer to Caroline and even if they did, there were fucking zombies around, was beating up a school teacher really necessary? They left out the junkers. It wasn't necessary to keep them in but considering they were the reason the hungries attacked the base in the novel, makes you wonder why they didn't do it sooner. They said the bullets were blunted to prevent blood splatter which they were in the novel... but it didn't prevent blood splatter at all. The whole time they were shooting hungries, there was blood going in and blood coming out. Pathetic! We saw eblocker gel once. Only once. I get the feeling it was only shown once to say "this is a thing and people use this" and that would be fine except: I didn't feel like they were in danger at all. In the novel, they were running from hungries and junkers and they were damn near starving, running low on ammo and eblocker. In the movie, they were going toward Beacon... and that was it. They had to go through hungries, yes, but it wasn't an urgent thing. They could have stopped at anytime and just chilled for a day or two. Caroline stated thag she has never seen a hungry display maternal or nurturing behavior before, two things: 1) the hungry wasn't displaying maternal behavior, it was pushing a stroller. That was all. She wasn't singing to her rat eaten baby, she didn’t even seem to notice it was there so I call bullshit. 2) that storyline went nowhere. In the novel, Caroline didn't know that Melanie was born a hungry and seeing the woman as well as a man looking at pictures helped form that idea. In the movie, she already knew that Melanie was a hungry from birth so what the hell? Last thing, they said Melanie and the other hungry children were embryos when the Breakdown happened. Which means that they're the only second generation hungries. Ergo, no more hungries can be born. The world has ended. In the novel, hungries could have sex, though rarely, and so in making everyone on Earth a hungry, Melanie ensured that more children would be born and those children would eventually grow up to have third generation and fourth generation hungries. The movie never even implies that they can reproduce. If it has to be said, the act of mindlessly pushing a stroller and having full blown intercourse are very different things.
