Listen to songs while writing or imagining scenes like I do? Murder Rooms: The Dark Beginnings of Sherlock Holmes

What is it?

- It’s a 2001 BBC miniseries about young Arthur Conan Doyle and the real historical prototype of Sherlock Holmes, Dr Joseph Bell, solving (largely fictional) crimes together!

It’s my special interest! It’s incredibly Victorian and Gothic and beautiful and otherwise the best. It stars Charles Edwards (Dr McDonald in The Terror and Michael Gregson in Downton Abbey) and Ian Richardson (Francis Urquhart in the UK House of Cards).

What is its appeal to Sherlockians?

- It includes a lot of references to the Canon but at the same time doesn’t feel like an uninspired derivative of the original stories. I think it plays with and subverts the Canon rather cleverly. While it is fictionalized, it does include some little known real historical facts (i.e. the fact that the Lambeth Poisoner studied at the University of Edinburgh at the same time as ACD, and the fact that Dr Joseph Bell actually did forensic investigations for the Crown).

For fans of the Holmes-Watson relationship, the premise of the series is basically that the Canon is a wish fulfilment narrative Doyle wrote to cope with what happened to him and to express his affection and undying admiration for Bell.

It has a lot of good historical research and compelling emotional exploration of the Victorian era and its social issues.

What are some other good things about it?

- Basically if you’re a fan of quasi-familial relationships and of mentor&mentee dynamics, you’re in luck. The central relationship is excellent in this sense. They love each other so much UGH. They need to just hug already!!

The series also has great acting, some brilliant costuming, and a fantastic Gothic horror aesthetic.

The angst and hurt/comfort potential is absolutely off the charts.

Where can I get it?

- I would normally not encourage people to pirate something I love, but this show has precious few physical copies and most of them are bad. Additionally, the creators no longer receive money from the sales. So pirate the hell out of it. It is out there on the websites you’d expect it to be on, and additionally I have also uploaded it here in order to make things easier for people:

Everything should be in order here, but hit me up in case of any problems. The video files have two audio tracks, one of them the original English.

Accessibility

- All the episodes have subtitles except for the pilot. The pilot is skippable, plot-wise. The audio mixing in the series is kind of shitty, with the background music being too loud and the dialogue too quiet. You may experience some issues watching it without subtitles if you (like me) have APD or hearing issues.

- The Photographer’s Chair episode contains flashing lights in random places, since it’s about old-timey photography.

Content warnings

- There’s a fridging (https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/StuffedIntoTheFridge) in the pilot episode. The series, especially the first two episodes (the pilot and The Patient’s Eyes), tries to be actively feminist and succeeds in some respects but not in others. There are some issues with its treatment of female characters.

- The White Knight Stratagem shows a Victorian insane asylum with some pretty painful details. It’s not disrespectful while doing so, but the content is potentially upsetting.

- Gore. There’s a bunch of that.

- Suicide in multiple episodes.

Misc notes

- The pilot has a different actor playing Doyle than the rest of the series. I think they’re both really good and the transition isn’t jarring, but YMMV.

- Episode 4, The Kingdom of Bones, is really quite bizarre. Someone once described it as “a Victorian B-movie”. It’s a lot of fun and the dynamic between Bell and Doyle is superb, but don’t mind the plot, it’s bonkers.

- There are also books! The books are great too! It’s a novel trilogy by David Pirie, one of the screenwriters. Check it out if you like the show.

Star Crows return, Giants rush back key tall

ADELAIDE has been bolstered by the return of star midfielder Rory Sloane and All Australian defender Rory Laird for Saturday's must-win clash against West Coast at Adelaide Oval.

STAR midfielder Rory Sloane makes a welcome return from a foot injury for Adelaide's must-win match against West Coast on Saturday. Sloane (foot) will play his first game since round four, while Laird resumes after missing the past two matches with a broken hand. Lock-down defender Luke Brown returns from an ankle injury, while first-year forward Darcy Fogarty, midfield bull Cam Ellis-Yolmen and Curtly Hampton round out the Crows' six inclusions. Superstar forward Eddie Betts (hamstring), Andy Otten (Achilles), Sam Gibson (hamstring) and dumped trio Patrick Wilson, Rory Atkins and Myles Poholke make way, while link-man Tom Lynch will spend at least another week on the sidelines after suffering a mild concussion at training on Wednesday. Brendon Ah Chee and first-year midfielder Brayden Ainsworth come in for the Eagles who have lost veteran sharpshooter Mark LeCras to a wrist injury and axed dashing defender Jackson Nelson. Superboot Matthew Suckling (Achilles) is back for the Western Bulldogs' Friday night encounter against Geelong at Etihad Stadium, while defender Brad Lynch will make his AFL debut. The pair come in for Mitch Honeychurch (omitted) and cult figure Caleb Daniel (knee soreness). Star defender Harry Taylor and Cam Guthrie come into the Geelong team for their first matches since rounds nine and three respectively, while Quinton Narkle will be the club's sixth debutant this season. Zach Guthrie and Cory Gregson have been omitted, while Lincoln McCarthy will miss because of a hamstring injury. Carlton skipper Marc Murphy will slot into the Blues' midfield for the first time since round nine when Brendon Bolton's men take on Port Adelaide at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in what doubles as Kade Simpson's 300th game.

CARLTON skipper Marc Murphy will lead his team out to battle for the first time since round nine. Jarrod Pickett (wrist) will play his first game of the year, with key marking target Levi Casboult, Nick Graham and ruckman Andrew Phillips the other additions. Phillips replaces star big man Matthew Kreuzer (ankle) who joins defender Lachie Plowman (knee) and veteran Dale Thomas (suspended) as a forced out, while Lochie O'Brien and Cameron O'Shea were given the chop. Former Melbourne midfielder Jack Trengove will make his Power debut in what will be just his eighth game in the past five seasons. Jack Hombsch is Port's other inclusion in place of Darcy Byrne-Jones (club-imposed suspension for being late for training) and in-form defender Tom Jonas (hamstring). Gold Coast has regained one co-captain and lost another ahead of Saturday night's contest against Collingwood at Metricon Stadium. Steven May returns from an ankle injury and is joined in the side by fellow defender Rory Thompson (hamstring), Brayden Crossley and the club's top selection at last year's National Draft in Wil Powell. But, in-demand forward Tom Lynch (knee) won't play again this year and is one of four outs, including key tall Sam Day (shoulder), Jack Leslie (omitted) and Callum Ah Chee (personal reasons). Hard-nosed midfielder Brayden Sier will make his debut in place of gun Collingwood midfielder Adam Treloar who will be sidelined until late August after injuring both hamstrings in the 20-point win over Carlton last-start. Ben Crocker also comes into the team after kicking five goals in the VFL last week, with Levi Greenwood (concussion) the other out. Greater Western Sydney big man Rory Lobb (back) was meant to be as far as a fortnight away from returning to action, but is the Giants' sole addition to face Hawthorn at Spotless Stadium in place of suspended spearhead Jeremy Cameron. Ruckman Jonathon Ceglar returns from a quad injury for the Hawks who will be without champion Shaun Burgoyne (hamstring) for the next month. Melbourne will continue to experiment in star defender Jake Lever's absence, with first-year player Harrison Petty confirmed to make his debut against St Kilda at the home of football on Sunday. Irishman Darragh Joyce will also make his senior debut, while Jarryn Geary will bolster the defensive unit, the Saints' captain returning from a calf complaint.

ST Kilda captain Jarryn Geary makes a timely return from injury as the Saints' face the sizeable task of containing a Melbourne team that is the most potent in the AFL. Aaron Francis, who was last sighted at AFL level in round seven last year, is in the frame to come in for Essendon's date with North Melbourne at Etihad Stadium on Sunday in a match that holds major ramifications for both teams' finals aspirations. Midfield stopper Ben Jacobs (delayed concussion) is the likely candidate to replace the speedy Billy Hartung (hamstring) for the Kangaroos. Fremantle have lost in-form midfielder Connor Blakely (knee) for up to six weeks, but have been strengthened by the return of key defender Alex Pearce (thumb) and three-time leading goal-kicker Michael Walters (suspension) as the y look to square the ledger on their season when they lock horns with Brisbane at Optus Stadium on Sunday. Sam Gibson had scans on his back on Monday after hurting it in the dramatic win over Carlton a day earlier, but he has not appeared on the club’s injury list. The midfielder’s 118 consecutive games are the longest active streak in the AFL. There was concern for Trent Dumont in his first match back, after missing the previous week with concussion, when he suffered another head knock against the Blues, but he passed a concussion test and he and club doctors have declared him ready to go for Saturday night’s clash with Richmond. Moore suffered a left ankle partial syndesmosis sprain in the VFL and will be wearing a moon boot for one week. He underwent an arthroscope, which ruled out the need for major surgery. Nathan Broad has recovered from a shoulder injury and returns in the VFL this weekend, meaning the Tigers will need to move Ivan Soldo back to the rookie list temporarily.
