Saab 95 V4 brochure, 1969 (Dutch market). 1969 was the first year the 95 was made available with Ford's 1.5 litre 60º V4 engine. It offered 7-seat accommodation in 3 rows. Previously, and since it had been introduced in 1959, it had only been available with a 3 cylinder, 841cc 2 stroke engine. The V4 95 remained in production until 1978.

Matra Laser 

Michelotti  based the Laser on the Matra M530’s chassis and commended mid-engined layout (at the time, one well-known magazine described the handling as ‘unbelievably neutral’). The bodywork had the wedge-shaped profile synonymous with 1970s concept cars, while the doors were of the ‘gullwing’ variety; a feature shared with many of Michelotti’s experimental cars of the same period. Sitting just 1080mm tall, the Laser had chunky door sills designed not only to increase structural rigidity, but also to channel cool air to the 1700cc Ford V4 engine stowed away behind the passenger compartment. The unique prototype made its debut at the 1971 Geneva Motor Show painted in a striking shade of yellow, and later appeared at the 1972 Montreal Auto Salon sporting some subtle styling changes and a less conspicuous silver paint scheme.

Being a bit of car nut I have owned many cars. These are two of the most memorable. Different times now and things changed when I moved over to Toyota’s after seeing how they survived in Jamaica. But, rarity remains with a ‘like new’ 2007, special paint code, last of the Corolla E120 series. A great little car.  

1967 Ford Corsair Crayford Convertible (1.7 V4)

My own car back in the day. A show car. Very limted numbers - not many of the original 100 still survive. I of 3 Corsairs I owned including one from the final production run with a 2000E body but standard fittings. I moved over to company cars after this period.

1982 Opel Monza 3.0E (A1S)

My own car. Very few survive today (if any). This was a rare MK1 (MK1.5) with S package. They were production ‘mules’ (MK1 body with MK2 Interior and running gear) and were replaced with the MK2 within a year. Only around 95 were imported into the UK. It was a very sad day when it had to go to make room for a Ford E150 Dayvan (we had a travelling Memorabilia business). A great car and I should have kept it.

Saab Sonett III, 1973. A Swedish sports car based on the Saab 95 using that car's Ford V4 engine. The 3rd generation was a heavily modified version of the Sonett II with styling by Sergio Coggiola. It was discontinued and not replaced in 1974 when it became impossible for it to meet emission standards in the US (its biggest market)

Saab Sonett III

The Saab Sonett III was the third and final iteration of the car, it was also the fastest and most refined, with power provided by a 1.5 liter Ford Taunus V4 engine and a top speed of over 100 mph. The body was largely redesigned in 1970 with the release of the Saab Sonett III, the new more angular body was fitted to largely the same chassis as its forebear, but it featured a number of upgrades throughout including the addition of pop-up headlights – a must-have feature for many sports cars in the 1970s.

Initially the Sonett III was given the same 1.5 liter Ford V4 as the earlier model, however after 1971 it was upgraded to the 1.7 liter version. The car was capable of a 165 km/h (103 mph) top speed and it could do the 0-62 mph dash in 13 seconds. That may not sound impressive by today’s standards but it was on par for small, affordable sports cars of this nature at the time. 8,368 Sonett IIIs were manufactured between 1970 and 1974, most were exported, and a surprising number of them have survived thanks to their rust-free fiberglass bodies.
