Saab Sonett III, 1973. A Swedish sports car based on the Saab 95 using that car's Ford V4 engine. The 3rd generation was a heavily modified version of the Sonett II with styling by Sergio Coggiola. It was discontinued and not replaced in 1974 when it became impossible for it to meet emission standards in the US (its biggest market)

Saab Sonett III
The Saab Sonett III was the third and final iteration of the car, it was also the fastest and most refined, with power provided by a 1.5 liter Ford Taunus V4 engine and a top speed of over 100 mph. The body was largely redesigned in 1970 with the release of the Saab Sonett III, the new more angular body was fitted to largely the same chassis as its forebear, but it featured a number of upgrades throughout including the addition of pop-up headlights – a must-have feature for many sports cars in the 1970s.
Initially the Sonett III was given the same 1.5 liter Ford V4 as the earlier model, however after 1971 it was upgraded to the 1.7 liter version. The car was capable of a 165 km/h (103 mph) top speed and it could do the 0-62 mph dash in 13 seconds. That may not sound impressive by today’s standards but it was on par for small, affordable sports cars of this nature at the time. 8,368 Sonett IIIs were manufactured between 1970 and 1974, most were exported, and a surprising number of them have survived thanks to their rust-free fiberglass bodies.

Saab Sonett Sports Coupe Concept
What if... Saab was back in business and returned this classic coupe from the past? As a joint venture, theoretically would be with either Jaguar, BMW, or Chevrolet this would share the chassis of their F-type, Camaro, or 4 Series. The engine would be in house as a inline four cylinder twin turbo paired with an automatic or manual transmission option. The sleek design and flowing lines would encompass the past sports coupe with modern flare.

Saab Catherina (Protoype)
The Catherina prototype was penned by Sixten Sason, Saab’s first designer. Story has it he initially wanted to design a Saab-based sports coupe to use as his personal car. He commissioned a Swedish firm named Svenska Järnvägsverkstäderna to build his dream machine in 1964 using mechanical components that were readily available in the Saab parts bin. The finished model featured an elegant look that shared virtually no styling cues with the 96 that it borrowed the bulk of its drivetrain from. Notably, it was equipped with a targa-style removable roof panel that could be stored in the large trunk when the sun came out.Saab was impressed by the coupe. It was close to breaking into the sports car segment, and it seriously considered approving the Catherina for production without making any major changes to it. Ultimately, executives green-lit another prototype, called MF1 13, that later morphed into the Sonett II.

Sweden's Forgotten V4-Powered Sports Car: The Saab Sonett
In some respects the Saab Sonett is a car that time forgot, the little Swedish coupe was wildly popular with fans of quirky European sports cars, and it put up a respectable showing in period SCCA competition against the likes of the MG Midget and Triumph TR5. The Saab Sonett III was the third and final iteration of the car, it was also the fastest and most refined, with power provided by a 1.5…
