Joseph Alanen (1885-1920), 'Ilmatar', 1913-1916 "In the Kalevala, the Finnish national epic, Ilmatar was a virgin spirit and goddess of the air. The name Ilmatar is derived from the Finnish word ilma, meaning "air," and the female suffix -tar, corresponding to English "-ress". Thus, her name means Airress. In the Kalevala she was also occasionally called Luonnotar, which means "female spirit of nature" (Finnish luonto, "nature").
She was impregnated by the sea and wind and thus became the mother of Väinämöine (..."a demigod, hero and the central character in Finnish folklore and the main character in the national epic Kalevala by Elias Lönnrot.")

This unlikely pair was spotted by Finnish photographer Lassi Rautiainen.
He photographed the female grey wolf and male brown bear every night for ten days straight. "No one had observed bears and wolves living near each other and becoming friends in Europe”
The two friends were even seen sharing food. "It seems to me that they feel safe being together, and so every evening they met up for their dinner" said Lassi. "No-one can know exactly why or how the young wolf and bear became friends. I think that perhaps they were both alone and they were young and a bit unsure of how to survive alone"

Taivaankannen kannattelija 24 x 35 cm ✦ Watercolour and gouache on paper
Taivaankannen kannattelija is Finnish for "one that carries the sky", an old nickname for the crane. It has earned this name for it's proud posture, as if it's holding up the entire sky.
Fun fact: the Milky Way is linnunrata in Finnish, which roughly translates into "path of the bird". This word has it's roots in the ancient Finno-Ugric people's beliefs, according to which birds could travel along the Milky Way to deliver messages between our world and the gods.

Pirstottu / Shattered 15 x 21 cm ✦ Watercolour and gouache on paper Available as print
Roughly a third of the land that is now Finland used to be covered in wetlands. Less than a half of that remains in it’s natural state today, shattered into small areas here and there. Biggest contributors to the loss of these habitats have been wetland draining for agriculture and forestry, along with the extraction of peat. This flower is the marsh tea, suopursu. It’s soft white flowers and fresh scent are what first come to mind when I think of a typical Finnish wetland scenery. It is one of the most beautiful flowers I know, even when in pieces. I hope we learn to see the true value of it’s habitat before it’s too late.
