Never After by Melissa De La Cruz

Filomena Jefferson-Cho of North Pasadena just wants to escape into the pages of the last book of her favorite book series, Never After, and away from the bullies and her loving but overprotective parents. When she’s pulled into the world of fairytales and meets her heroes, she finds herself helping her new friends protect their home.

While there were times where I thought the story was progressing a bit too fast, I still enjoyed this read and I’m curious to see where book two takes the story. Retellings of fairytales are always fun and Never After is cool spin on the stories “we already know”, (as the narrative also makes it a point to emphasis that Never After is the real thing and the human realm has gotten it all wrong thanks too [redacted]).

Rating: 4 stars

Would I recommend: I would!

Takeaways:

Fast paced read that’s perfect for reading out loud to a class or personal reading time

The first in its series

Quite a few chuckle out loud moments and humor for the older kids and

Retelling/reimagining of certain classics fairytales that (in my opinion) don’t take away from the overall plot

p.s.I’m always a sucker for lost princess trope and was delighted to see it in this story.
