Chapter 6: Sometimes when Isak is working, seemingly lost in thought as he sands down one of the new pilasters or cuts two wood pieces to the same length, there's a sudden change to his movements, a sharp intake of breath, and then he turns around and looks for me.

The first time it happens, he is kneeling at the foot of the stairs. He's been pulling on his unwashed hair all day. There's wood dust smeared on his forehead where he must have rubbed the skin with the back of his hand, and there's more of it clinging to the little gilt hairs on his arms. For reasons unknown, he's only wearing one sock.

He's so lovely.

The moment his gaze finds me, he swallows and the tightness around his mouth softens. He gives me a small smile. It stays on his face as he turns back to his work.

About 1300 words written today -- concept writing, so it seems to be working. Some Reaches concept writing went up earlier today; doing some Yonderverse now. I try not to do a whole lot of concept writing if I'm in the middle of another story, but given the wasteland the last six week have been...oof. I'll take it. (Besides, with this particular thought experiment I'm deliberately not writing as much as I would usually do with concept writing.) Did two weeks worth of laundry today; it is always a bad sign when I cannot muster up the emotional energy to do laundry, given that I normally find doing laundry soothing. Also watched...a lot of TV. (I am enjoying Special Ops: Lioness, but now I have run out of episodes.)

Clint gritted his teeth and tucked his gun into his waistband, pulling his shirt down to cover the grip. “You tell Loki,” he informed the raven as he crossed the kitchen, “that the postal service exists and it’s very reliable. Don’t tell me he’s too cheap to buy an international stamp.” He took the envelope a little gingerly from the raven, then resisted the urge to flinch as it repeated the motion, this time with what seemed to be a tightly rolled scroll. It settled back on the chair and watched him after he took it. “What?” Clint asked it. “What do you want? A prize? Go on, shoo.” The raven ruffled its piebald feathers and didn’t move. “Jesus,” Clint muttered, taking a wary step back from the bird and putting himself between it and his family. He opened the envelope first and pulled out a perfectly ordinary sheet of heavy embossed paper, reading out loud, “You are cordially invited to the wedding of Robert Bruce Banner and Elizabeth Lee Ross – Bruce and Betty are getting married,” he informed Laura, passing her the invitation as she came up behind him. “It’s going to be in some church in Virginia, which makes me wonder why the hell Bruce has Loki’s menagerie delivering his mail.” The raven quorked at him again, sounding annoyed. “That’s wonderful,” Laura said, reading the invitation. “What’s the other one?” “Vice President Ross must be losing his mind,” Clint said as he unrolled the scroll. “He hates Bruce. He – holy shit!” “What?” “Nat’s getting married!”

I saw @apersonwholikeslotus share some stuff about their ghosts au, and it inspired me to share a little bit more about the ghosts au I’ve been working on myself for well over a year now 💕. Big thank you to @ifindus and @nordickies as well as my friend Third over on discord for helping me out with this AU.

Ghosts, a hetalia AU.

ÅLAND/GERMANY: alive

In this AU, Linnea (Åland) & Ludwig (Germany) take Alison & Mike’s rolls. A young couple who move into a Manor House after a very far off relative of Linn’s passes away. After an accident, Linnea is left with the ability to see ghosts, unlike Ludwig who cannot.

DENMARK: 800s

A Viking arriving in britain right before the Danelaw began. Mathias never actually made it to battle, he tripped and fell onto his axe before he got there. Mathias is the oldest of the ghosts, but he doesn’t speak much English besides a few words he’s picked up overtime. Interestingly, he has an extreme reaction whenever someone mentions him helmet not having horns on it. Mathias likes to upkeep his Viking traditions, and forces Linnea to run a bath for him to sit in every week. Mathias has the ghostly ability to be able to touch and move things with enough effort.

NYO SCOTLAND: 1300s

An overly opinionated woman for her time, Bonnie was married off to a wealthy Danish man when she was young. The pair didn’t get along, she found him intolerable, and fucking stupid. Bonnie was poisoned by her husband on their trip down to the north of england. The second oldest ghost after Mathias, but the two struggled to interact with one another. Bonnie can be seen very faintly in photographs.

FAROE ISLANDS: 1400s

Gyða is the ghost I personally consider to have the most tragic backstory. The daughter of a king, and his servant mistress who had been stolen from her home. Gyða grew up never knowing who her dad was, and believing her existence was pointless. She was raised a servant, and threw her out of the highest window of the house on her 20th birthday. Gyða becomes good friends with Bonnie, who in her death helps her find her worth, which allows her to make peace and move on. Gyða’s voice can be heard by humans so long as she shouts/screams/laughs loud enough. She falls from the highest window in the house every night, recreating her death.

NYO FRANCE: 1536

A wealthy Tudor woman, heavily inspired by Anne Boleyn. Marianne was a mistress of Henry VIII between Boleyn and Seymour. She was beheaded after being accused of treason. Her ghost body can never find her head, but she does have the ability to float. She had a strong friendship with Cornwall, a pirate ghost who died not too long after her, who made peace before Linnea and Ludwig moved in.

NORWAY: 1662-1663

Aksel moved to britain alongside his family as a travelling band. They settled into a village, but were not very trusted or popular because of their pagan beliefs. When accused of witchcraft, aksel was the only one of his family who did not manage to escape and sail off to Iceland. He was burnt at the stake. He becomes best friends with Denmark after being harassed by the Viking. But he winds up learning old Norse from being unable to escape him. The two stick together like glue, aksel is more thankful for Mathias than he lets on. When stood close to Aksel you feel extremely hot.

SWEDEN: 1814

A figure of the Swedish government, Björn is in England to discuss the Sweden-Norway war and possible unification of the countries, along side his son. After a heated argument between him and his son, who will live on to become an infamous fictional serial killer in Sweden, he suffocates Björn in his sleep using his pillow. When we meet björn, he has no idea who killed him, and takes intense pride in his son. Björn likes to fill Aksel in on the “current” political system of Scandinavia (though, it is now very outdated). Björn has the ability to fiddle with lighting.

ENGLAND: WWII

What can I say? Cap is my favourite character. And the design is already made for me! I think Arthur was shot dead. He, similar to cap, had a lover who left the station to fight in the war. He makes peace and moves on when his former crush comes back to visit the house, and when Linnea goes out to talk to him, Arthur finds out his love was reciprocated.

FINLAND: 1986

The youngest of the ghosts! Aino was in britain on holiday, taking a tour of the old manor. She gets distracted by something, and in an attempt to hurry and reconnect with the group, they cross a frozen lake, which breaks and they die of hypothermia in the water. Aino herself is actually a relative of Linnea, her auntie who she never got to meet. Aino becomes an unexpected friend to Arthur, being the newest ghost the pair of them team up to try and get to the bottom of how the rest of the ghosts passed away. Aino is the opposite of aksel, when you stand too close to her, you feel colder.

There is more I could touch upon, but here you go!! My ghosts au, which I’ve been wanting to share for way too long now. You can probably spot all the ways I took inspo from the og show.

I’ve always juggled the idea of having a modern day AU where Hiccup speaks Spanish. I’m always debating on how to manipulate it though, whether to have him be raised by spanish-speaking guardians, or live next to spanish-speaking neighbors. Haven’t settled on what I’d want to use.

However, I was doing research for another fic, and I thought about the Nordic region. One of my best friends lives in Sweden, and I know she continuously refers to other Nordic countries. Sends me a handful of tiktoks pertaining to them too. But I realized I didn’t know how many there were. I knew there was at least Sweden, Denmark, and Norway. Entonces I googled the full list of the Nordic countries.

Came to see the others, and then Faroe Islands piqued my eye. Honed my search there. It’s described as a “self-governing ARCHIPELAGO”. Then continued by seeing what languages were spoken there. (insert me laughing deliriously) While Danish is the main language, they teach German, French, and SPANISH in elementary and secondary schools.

And I’m like

I now have actual evidence what I want to do you guys. And it’s making me giddy. Hiccup speaking spanish here we come.

au where wille never returns to hillerska after christmas, and he never really recovers from erik and the video and the breakup. over the next few years he retreats from the world. at 25, he vanishes. he leaves information about his intended destination with only one person, whom he swears to secrecy.

ten years later, simon eriksson treks to a remote farm in the faroe islands. there is a tall man with labor-thickened shoulders and a wind-weathered face forking hay into a wheelbarrow just inside the barn, but he stops as simon approaches. the crown prince has changed, but his eyes are as sad as ever.

they have coffee inside the small farmhouse. "your mother is dying," simon tells him. "they are preparing august to be king. if you're ever going to come back, now is the time."

"maybe august will be the king they need," wille says.

they both know it's not true, but simon leaves alone the next day, though it breaks his heart to do so. he wants nothing more than to stay here, to live the rest of his life in isolation with the man he still loves. but he has a mother and a sister and a job so he will return, and he will keep wille's secret.

but a week after that, crown prince wilhelm returns to the palace, clean-shaven and freshly shorn, back straight and jaw set. simon, whose apartment had been wille's first stop back in sweden, walks beside him in pride.

modern day au where Eivor and Randvi are travelling back home for the holidays

they are from different cities but have the same connecting flight and end up seated next to each other on the plane

Randvi obviously has the window seat because she checked in early and Eivor has to awkwardly take the middle seat, this will not be explained further

just like right now, there is an arctic system affecting flights. their flight ends up delayed from the gate, and then it taxis/holds on the tarmac for like 4-5 hours because de-icing and general weather conditions are making it really difficult for ALL flights

they get to know each other on the plane. Eivor's phone lost charge like 2 hours into the forevertaxi and Randvi had been reading some old Norse archeology book so they start talking. Eivor talks about and shows Randvi her tattoos and talks about living in Norway/Iceland/Faroe Islands/England/Ireland/Archeological flavour of your choice.

They find out they have a lot of mutual contacts and plan to meet up when they land.

The travelling situation is a mess and they have to navigate the airport with hundreds of other stranded travelers trying to figure out what to do with their cancelled flights. Randvi is distraught bc it's her first year in a while going back home and her sister (Thora ofc) just had a baby. Eivor is distraught bc a mentor and father figure of hers passed away (Svend) and she's concerned she won't make the funeral.

They spend literal hours in endless lines getting confusing information from a severely understaffed and overwhelmed 3am airport staff. Everyone around them (and themselves) are tired, hungry, thirsty, looking for a way to their destination.

They split briefly at first, but eventually find each other again to navigate the mess. It just makes more sense to stay in line together. One can stay in line and watch bags while the other uses the restroom, tries to find out what is happening in another line, tries to find food/drink, charges their phone. This of course leads them to exchanging their contact info so they can keep each other informed.

At some point Randvi gets super cold bc it's negative double digits and her coat is in her checked-in luggage. So of course Eivor gives her her jacket and says "it's fine, I run hot. Anyways, I'm wearing a flannel so technically I have layers too" -- totally normal gay behaviour.

Eventually, after 16 hours, they are delirious and swaying on their feet, but they manage to get a standby flight to where they're headed. They get food and drinks together once the shops are finally open and then head to their gate. Eivor, clearly shaking and on the verge of sleep deprived delirium, offers to stay awake while Randvi catches up on some sleep while they wait. Eivor says she will sleep on the flight.

Their first standby flight is a miss; but they're automatically rolled over to the next flight. Since it's still some hours away, Eivor does get some sleep and they both rest for a while.

There's a mutual unspoken fear of being put on separate flights since they are on standby and itching to get going, but luckily they make it on the same flight.

Seats are super limited though and they end up sitting separated from each other. Not that it matters too much bc all they end up doing is sleeping lol

When they land, there's a bit of debacle about how to find their luggage, and they end up chatting a bit more. This is when Eivor learns that Randvi was actually pretty close with Sigurd and Styrbjorn's family in general (details to be filled in on exactly what this is lol), and Randvi learns that Eivor is very good friends with Tove, who she is also good friends with, sharing mutual interest in ancient art.

So they learn they're going to the same neighbourhood, so they take a rideshare together. They actually solidify their plans to meet up later when Randvi learns Eivor is getting another tattoo and Randvi is giving research materials to Tove for referencing.

Eivor takes a genuine interest in it and offers to help on any expeditions or research sessions or trips if Randvi would like. Randvi learns Eivor has a boat and has enjoyed their time so far, and so they start planning regular expeditions around the North Sea, experiencing its lands and gifts together and witnessing the beauty of the northern lights regularly on Eivor's boat. :)

And for the 7292649391638th time, these two bitches fall in-love AGAIN

Hello! I would like to ask about any Lumen headcanons you might have? Also, I hope you're having a good day!

Hello! Apologies for taking a while to get to this. I threw in a mix of some of my thoughts for how modern lumen would be like and canon akverse lumen for this :) :

my headcanons for him under the cut!:

I can see modern au! Lumen taking up a nursing degree, which is parallel to canon akverse Lumen with his role as the caregiver in Gran Faro. He is that one quiet student who usually sits in the middle row during lectures and prefers to approach the lecturer one-on-one if he has any pressing questions.

Lumen strikes me as an early riser. He goes to bed early and wakes up just as early. Sometimes he gets up well before dawn to get a view of the sunrise on the deck of Rhodes Island, it brings him a peace of mind when he watches the red rim of the morning sun from afar rising from behind the mountains.

I think he hums to keep his focus when he works (applicable to both modern and canon akverse Lumen). Sometimes it's a mindless tune he conjured up in his mind, other times a note (or two) from a melody he heard when he was still a boy resurfaces and slips from between his lips.

Lumen is a mix of a coffee and tea person, he drinks either depending on the time of day and how it went. If he had a bad day, his colleagues or fellow coursemates might find him downing a cup of coffee. If Lumen simply needs a boost to bring his energy back, he would go for the latter.

He is freckled all over!! Given the amount of time he spends outdoors whenever he is dispatched on a mission from the Inquisition or simply strolling along the streets of Iberia. Freckles kiss his skin in abundance akin to stardust spread throughout the galaxies - a gracious gift from Helios himself.

Be it the canon storyline or modern au, Lumen's propensity for extending a helping hand towards those in need is innate. In fact, this trait has been so ingrained into him that it can be said to be permanent and plays into a large part of his character. I think he would bring his coursemates tea and sit down to spend time with them or help them with an assignment they have been struggling with if this is modern au we are talking about.

you should at least be vaguely familiar with my em. every single au and whatever hetalia character i feel like grabbing for that day goes in there. interesting little tidbit that somehow hasn't come up so far is that in more human AUs of mine he's part irish! ~20% of icelandic males and 60% of females actually have irish/keltic ancestry!!! ireland being his mom hc is going WILD in me. he's also very magic because that headcanon singlehandedly started the ice obsession in me. how well in tune he is with it and how exactly it looks like depends on the au . i also make him closer friends with swe and fin because i can👍

a fusion of 2 groups put into one world, connected by one flimsy tie. it's mostly analogous to real life but no homophobia👍

Group A: Pentagon

Mikael started out as a swedish micronation oc but we don't talk about that. he has a chicken called omelette because of inside jokes during... my wattpad era... shudders. i project onto him a lot and lots of his design is just wish fullfillment. while i love my ocs suffering and angst, because i put so much of myself in him, ultimately, his story is one of healing. major point of difference between us though is that his parents abandoned him and mine... didn't.do.that. 💀👍

Claire and Piper both actually started out as minecraft skins i made for fun!! and then i made them kith:3

Cecily and Kit were added becaue i felt like something was missing to complete the friendgroup!

Sometimes when Isak is working, seemingly lost in thought as he sands down one of the new pilasters or cuts two wood pieces to the same length, there’s a sudden change to his movements, a sharp intake of breath, and then he turns around and looks for me. The first time it happens, he is kneeling at the foot of the stairs. He’s been pulling on his unwashed hair all day. There’s wood dust smeared on his forehead where he must have rubbed the skin with the back of his hand, and there’s more of it clinging to the little gilt hairs on his arms. For reasons unknown, he’s only wearing one sock. He’s so lovely. The moment his gaze finds me, he swallows and the tightness around his mouth softens. He gives me a small smile. It stays on his face as he turns back to his work.

Besides from Ireland, do you portray any other nation as female despite having a canon male version?

Actually, yes! I have female OCs for Northern Ireland, Finland, Iceland & Estonia. Iceland started out as a nyo, but I developed her so much she basically became an OC. The other three I set out with the intention of making an OC version instead. I might go back in develop male iceland more, bc I honestly love the idea of Finland being the only female (independent) Nordic.

I also prefer to use nyo north Italy in aus. I scarcely use aph Italy, also nyo. Nations like France, America & Spain, it’s a flip of a coin, sometimes I like to use their 1ps, but I also love their nyos.

I would’ve loved for the Philippines to be a girl too, and I much prefer Portugal original female design over his male design, but I don’t have girl versions developed for them, and don’t know enough about either country to develop female versions.

However, out of all these characters mentioned, the only two where I actively refuse to even acknowledge their male counterparts are Ireland & N. Ireland.

& in terms of OCs that aren’t canon in hetalia, the Faroe Islands, Åland, Cornwall & Northumbria (Northern England) are all also women in my mind.
