Repeat: it is not illegal to not stand for anthems. It is not a crime to not sing along. If any show off tries to tell you otherwise and causes you discomfort in any way, you can sue them in return, for nuisance. In India, an old and since discontinued ruling invoking mandatory runs of National Anthem on movie screens before every show is an example of authoritarianism which was why it was overruled the following year and a bench has also ruled that it is not illegal and particularly NOT "disrespectful" or " unpatriotic" to not stand or sing along the anthem. But some ignorant bullies and nationalistic idiots of far right seeds have been creating scenes, some times manhandling and other times, chasing off movie goers from shows that they have paid to watch, when majority of the audience shares their beliefs and when they happen to be in minority, they just try to shame, yell and call "defaulters" names until they would have had enough and give up. I personally do not stand for these same drives for two reasons. 1. I don't have to show off my respect for my country and definitely won't because some butthurt nationalists may cry. And 2. It is an insult for the anthem in the first place, for having been played on the same screens that promote alcoholism, encourage tobacco use, and glorify abuse and violence; no matter what the adverts and disclaimers claim.
