The radical history of the queer fat liberation movement | Dazed Beauty
“Don’t assume… I don’t like my body,” begins a manifesto shared at a 1989 Fat Women’s conference in London. Known as the “Fat Dykes Statement”, it contained a list of 29 assumptions, from serious points (“Don’t assume… I think your body is better than mine”) alongside more playful ones, which emphasise the ludicrousy of assuming anything about a person based on their body shape (“Don’t assume… I want a Diet Coke”).
If you think fat liberation began in 2011 with Tumblr feminism and fat fashion blogs, you’ve never had the pleasure of interacting with Carlie Pendleton’s work. The scholar focuses on the history of fat activism in modern Britain, with particular attention to the queer histories of the movement – like the incendiary Fat Dyke Statement.
Pendleton is part of a growing effort to document and record the fat liberation movement for posterity. The recently created Fat Liberation Archive, for example, is a digital collection of the ephemera of the cultural and organising history of fat liberation activism, including zines, flyers, articles, audio recordings. Providing evidence of over 50 years of radical fat activism, you can learn about fat liberation leaders from history like poet Sharon Bas Hannah, Fat GiRL zine editors and activist Judith Stein.
Speaking to The Fat Zine founder Gina Tonic, Pendleton discusses how fatness and queerness intersect, the intricacies of fat lib activism over the decades, and their own personal stake in fat politics

This interview of Dorothy Allison from (the fat zine) FaT GiRL #3 (June 1995) is still so full of truths and gems about being fat and queer and unapologetic. This is just one little nugget that I had to share.
Tumblr media
Dorothy Allison: But-- what has saved my life --the piece of one of the pieces that has saved my life-- is that concept of embracing being scary; embracing being unacceptable.

I got the OK to finally start posting the art I made for The Wandersong Fanzine!! I worked on a pack of digital download wallpapers, one for each Act for the game. I decided I would make the theme "GIRL'S NIIIIIGHT <3" and had a lot of fun incorporating an important lady from each act into a chance to study the game's scenery and make it my own.
ACT 1: The Mayor! I like how no nonsense and respectable she is, she makes for a great part of our intro into the game's rich world
Go check out the zine's leftover sale happening right now and learn more about it at https://wandersongzine.carrd.co/
ID: An illustration of a confident, fat brown woman standing with her hands on her hips in front of a very large tree in a bright, sunshined filled forest. End ID.

just came across your post about how the rhetoric of trans 'social contagion' links with other social contagion rhetoric e.g. around anorexia or self-injury. this is something I think about a lot + would love to write more on, as a trans person with a history of self-harm who also wants one of the surgeries which is commonly constructed by transphobes as self-harm. is this something you've written about more extensively elsewhere, or are you aware of anyone else who has?
hi anon, sorry for the delay here! i wanted to wait to answer this until a couple more of my pieces were out in the world. now, that has happened!
a few places where i speak about pathologization, "contagion," and trans///Mad subjectivity:
Embodying Otherwise: Nonhuman Criptopias in 'Salt Fish Girl' (2023) looks at hegemonic memory/knowledge of oppression as contagion, queercrip intimacies as generative vectors - all in the context of speculative fiction
Refuse! (2023) critical ED, Mad, and fat liberationist perspective on solidarity across bodymind difference for disorderly eaters with thin privilege. Considers the weaponization of "contagion" as a way to discourage solidarity among Mad/disorderly eaters. Published in @trans-axolotl's amazing Psych Survivor Zine!
Loving trans into possible: t4t as transpollinatory praxis (2023) traces the history of t4t via the villification of craigslist + trans(/)sexual connection, argues for a framing of trans becoming that embraces contagion as an erotics of "pollination"
All of these are linked to my academia.edu account, where you can find them for free! If you come across a paywalled source in any of my bibliographies that is of interest and need me to liberate it, feel free to send me a message (this goes for every paper, always).
I'm also working with a colleague on a longer academic article about disorderly eating, indigestion, and "contagion," but that's still a WIP. you'll all be the first to know if & when it's picked up!!

These I drew over the past 2-3 weeks! They're my lovely OCS, left to right, Lucille, Mara and Sabrina! They're story is a big fat beautiful shit on JK Rowl*ng! Lucille is a black lesbian successful trans woman/future magic council-woman, Mara is a japanese-american hard-headed/bold sapphic woman/future professional magical athlete, and Sabrina is a plus-size queer woman/future professional magical plants necromancer! They're in my twist on Harry Potter universe, where they all go to magical university, and the point is that Mara and Lucille are infamous school rivals, but then fall in love/fall in love with Sabrina too! A magical gay polycule if u will, I've written 2 short stories about them for my fiction class so far!
Tumblr media
SHEESH, DO ME A FAVOR AND CLICK FOR QUALITY!!
this was my last project for my illustration 2 class! I have a physical comic book/zine I'm making, but this is the summary TLDR digital piece lol, its actually a sort of isekai of myself into Percy Jackson and changing his fate for the better! (Yes ik his anatomy is ROUGH, dont look at him too hard- SOBS)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here's an earlier project this year from Illustration 2, I got an article I had to make illustrations for, to help you understand it/add aesthetic to it! My subject was Cosmic Topology, pretty sick topic if u ever wanna look it up, it's about the shape of the universe! :0

^^^
And these-
are the gifs from that art exhibition I talked so much about the past couple weeks! It was my senior art exhibition (a requirement to display art in the uni gallery to graduate!)
irl photos under this text block!
These are actually being projected across pages in a fake photo album/prom guestbook thingy, fully interactive so u can turn the pages and it shows a new animation, like a magical storybook! Also, since it's prom themed, I made it a kinda guestbook/sign book so gallery viewers can get some glitter pens I left out to sign the end of it! I also have a playlist I made playing in the gallery along with it so it's like what they'd play at this prom! :) hope that made sense!
The content is that the girl you see walking around in white is getting social anxiety/stressed out, to the point of dissociating, as a way of doing my theme I've kept up for university of things appearing darker than they initially look (hence the colors + I love colors), and to bring awareness to mental health!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
welp, didnt mean to include all that black space, but that's my artist statement too! (u cant see the prints in the pictures, that's just my interactive piece I was talking about!)
hope if u click on the statement it's readable lol
Just click on the Alt text, I pasted it there 😭 also the piece is called
"You're the Star of the Night (you're dissociating)!"
Tumblr media
Tumblr hates me so I just made the gif of me actually turning the pages into a link/QR code thingy! feel free to check out if u want :)
Uh anyway, if you made it this far, thank you so much!
Can't wait to make more fanart tbh lol
AND THANK YOU SO MUCH AGAIN FOR ASKING ORAH!! (sorry it wasnt more genshin stuff whoops...) RLLY HOPE I DIDNT SPAM U TOO HARD-
Safe travels,
💀♒️

[ID: A black and white drawing of Kamado Nezuko from Demon Slayer. Nezuko is a young Japanese girl with dark leaf patterns on her limbs and long messy tangled hair. She is wearing a hemp-leaf patterned kimono, a dark haori jacket, a bamboo muzzle, and thick black cloth pieces around her legs segmented in three bunches by ribbons. She is sitting on a hill, looking towards the top. Her hair is billowing with the wind. End ID.]

[ID: Two black and white traditional sketches of Yuuji Itadori from Jujutsu Kaisen. Yuuji is a tall, fat teenage boy with short curly hair that has an undercut. He is wearing a plain jacket with a thick collar, pants that are cuffed at the ends, and running shoes. The first sketch is a fullbody where he is casually leaning against a rail with a hand in his hair. He’s smiling. The second is a redraw of the “Oh, Ariana, we’re really in it now” meme with Yuuji leaning his head against a poster of Megan Thee Stallion and looking up at it wistfully. End ID.]

[ID: Two digital drawings of Gojo Satoru from Jujutsu Kaisen. Satoru is a young guy with short white hair and a high-collared jacket. He has six eyes clustered on his face like a hexagon, all with black irises. There are floating black eyes surrounding his head in a halo shape. His hands are raised, one pointing two fingers to the front. The second image is an inverted colored version of the first piece, where the eyes are white with significant chromatic abberation around the edges. End ID.]

My #1 post of 2022
Tumblr media
[ID: A primarily pink and blue colored manga page from Witch Hat Atelier featuring the characters Tetia and Agott. Tetia is a brown girl with pinky curly hair, some of her hair in two short pigtails. Agott is a light brown kid with short, fluffy black hair. The first panel is a halfbody of Tetia with her cupping her face. She looks deep in thought.
Tetia: I think that being able to become anything you want to, just by changing your outfit, is a kind of “transformation magic.”
The next panel is a fullbody of her clasping her hands under her chin with her eyes closed. She is surrounded by blue and pink clouds.
Tetia: With just a button and a ribbon, you can change the way others see you. And the way you see yourself.
The last panel is a detailed one with Tetia in a princess-like blue dress. She is looking up at Agott, who is wearing a primarily purple and black prince-like outfit with prominent gold accents. Gold flowers crawl around the panel, near the edges of the pink, white, and blue border.
Tetia: An ordinary child can become a princess. Or even a gallant knight.
End ID.]
(mangacap coloring) this is the most trans thing i have ever heard
