FFXIV Forum
Fuck it, let's try again.
Some time ago I created a forum that didn't stay lively for very long, unfortunately, but I don't want to give up on it as I think forums offer something that no other tool for online community can offer: an actual community that doesn't rely on everyone acting like their own PR/marketing team.
So here it is, in case anyone's interested:
What does it have to offer?
A place to meet artists and roleplayers from the FFXIV fandom, where you won't be assailed by notifications like a Discord server, that's LGBTQ-friendly and won't ask you to post all the time to remain visible (contrary to social media).
What you'll find:
RP sections for your RP threads, easier to manage than on Tumblr, and without the pressure of being seen online on Discord because you wanted to talk to your friends but aren't in the mood for RP
A place to get help to create your character or write an NPC, if you're feeling insecure and want to try your hand at writing/roleplaying
Galleries for your writing, fanarts, screenshots, irl craft, etc. where you don't have to worry about peak hours to be seen
Forums where you can gush about your own characters and get asked questions: no need to have a big following anymore!
A place where you can discuss the lore and share your meta analysis to your heart content
A place to organize your own in-game event and promote it, once again without needing to build a big enough following for it to be noticed!
Yes, there's a NSFW section (that you have to ask to get access to). Forumactif—the host—is not in favor of this, however, so if Etheirys has enough success I might consider hosting it myself (but I'm not rich so we'll start with the free alternative for now and just keep it on the low XD)
And more!
I am taking suggestions to improve it and I'll gladly help you and answer your questions if you're not familiar with forums (or this sort of forums, anyways).
For those who don't know me or find me intimidating to talk to (I know it has happened) I've been leading communities big and small for about 18 years now, and I've always put a big emphasis on fairness, communication and patience.
(Please reblog so more people can see this!)

I have a guilty habit of looking at the FFXIV forum when I'm bored. It's like a car crash you just can't look away from, even though it's absolutely disgusting and drains your braincells.
I can joke about the r/ffxiv being a circlejerk or ffxiv Twitter's unhinged takes sometimes. But the official forum is truly where the worst of the worst in the community resides. It's like those people wholeheartedly hate playing the game and just hijack the place to post their "hot takes" about world politics and unpopular opinions.

also i hadn't really done a 1 to 1 comparison but. i have slightly more mixed feelings now. like. It'll be fine for me, Cala still looks mostly like Cala to me but my main issue is the lighting. I've seen from a few others' posts that there's no hair shine now? and the eye shine is much less
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the overall scenery lighting in the trailer was decent but some highlights would be nice! some ambient lighting!

Alrightyyyyyyy! I need some help from my lovely FFXIV community members!
I've finally finished up my feedback about the face changes in the graphical update, but I can't post them on the official FFXIV forums myself because of that pesky old profanity permaban. I'll post it all here, so if one of you beautiful and wonderful people could copy and paste it over to the thread I'll link below I would really, really, really appreciate it.
It's been about 8 years since I could post there so I don't know the situation for posting images, but if you need me to host them someplace so you can use the necessary html, just let me know!
This was the thread I was hoping to post my feedback in, but if you see more that it would be helpful to add parts of it to or a different one you feel it's better suited for, feel free to paste it there as well!:
Add whatever note you want at the front to clarify that this is just a post made on behalf of another player! My own character info is: Nozomi Kei on the Balmung server, Crystal DC, NA
Feedback starts under the cut~
I'm going to try to cover everything I can find wrong and pray that at least the biggest issues are addressed, otherwise I may have to retire the character I've played for almost a decade. I will be talking primarily about face 2 male Duskwight Elezen, as that is what I play. Some of these issues might be present in all Melezen faces or isolated to face 2, but I wouldn't know unless one of you here has talked about it.
Tumblr media
First, an issue several others have mentioned:  Face 2 Duskwight suddenly having the textures of a Wildwood; eyebags being especially noticable and unwanted.  I chose my character to be Duskwight specifically because I didn't want the eyebags.
Tumblr media
Actually something seems off with all of the textures on face 2 Duskwight?  My previously powder-smooth, even-toned skin now has a mottled, almost artifacted appearance, same with the skin on the lips which have both mottling and oddly darkened edges on the lower lip especially.  The eyelid textures seem to have just straight up been placed wrong, with part of the weights snagging a section of the eyebrow down and leaving a notch during blinks.  The eyebrows also look like maaaybe they were misplaced and that's why they're thicker for some of us, because they're being stretched over a different area than intended that is bigger than their previous real estate.
Tumblr media
The obvious texture stretching aside, the new eyelid has removed my faint eyeliner, and changed the gently pink lid to the same jaundiced beige as areas like the forehead. Eyelids are naturally pinker in real life because of the thin skin amd abundant blood vessels. This ties into the larger observation I've made about the changes to face skin textures for 7.0, which is that their color now looks unnaturally one-toned and even more lacking in the natural hue variation of living skin than the current faces.
A note on the eyebrows and lips that is more of a suspicion than confirmed, but I'm starting to feel like these features have just been outright homogenized? Perhaps in order to make applying morphs easier? Several people have made mention of their brows being straightened out and/or thickened. The elderly faced gentleman on page 12 posted by Cio had his magnificent, shapely brows reduced to mundanity. A lot of unique lip shapes are being changed in a consistent direction. The 'standard' shape is a strong cupid's bow on top with very pointed peaks, color wrapping around the corners of the mouth, a wide and shallowly curved underside to the bottom lip, and less fullness overall. Some are seeing their gently rounded peaks made pointy, others are seeing skinny-in-width bottom lips widened, folks with broad upper lips are being thinned. My little lift in the center underside of my bottom lip was flattened
My lips are also now weirdly dark by default, and trying to colorcorrect the unattractive mauvish beige leaves me looking like I'm wearing heavy lipstick. I think part of this is the change in how lips handle lighting, and part is the bad texture that was swapped in, plus the harsher edges to the liplines where previously there was a gentle, natural transition.
Tumblr media
At first I thought I was imagining it before I imported my current settings, but now I am sure when I say my cute and small triangular ears whose shape added to the sharpness of my face have been made bigger and rounder. I made the smallest, most Tolkien elf ears I could because I wanted them to be subtle and elegant. This reshaping has added to the myriad changes that mean my character no longer looks like the same person.
Tumblr media
While I can see changes to my beloved hook nose I will concede that at least in profile the shape is nearly identical. Like others observed there has generally been a lessening of the details that made the nose unique. Raised ridge, bigger septum, nostril shortening.
Tumblr media
I'm going to try to list things out, starring the things that I think are issues that especially need to be changed/fixed because they are errors rather than just somewhat expected (if unwanted) differences caused by increased poly count and modelling changes.
☆☆• Face 2 Duskwight face textures have been swapped for Wildwood textures?
☆• Lips have been reshaped
☆• Eyebrows have been thickened
• Ears have been made bigger and more rounded in the middle and lobe regions
☆• Lips are darker by default which causes issues with lipstick
• The edges of lips have a hard edge instead of the previous gentle transition
☆• The bizarre 'milk mustache' above the upper lip
• My chin has been made bigger and more round in profile
• My lower lip has been plumped.
☆• Mottled skin textures, especially on my cheeks
• Very flat lip lighting/sheen
☆• Elongated dark smudges about 2cm long on either side of my mouth?
☆☆• Texture issues in eyelid region (very visible during blink animation)
• Harsher, darker eyelashes (not thicker from above though??)
• Lack of eyeshine and dark upper iris making my lids appear lower and changing my default expression
• Angular facial geometry in cheeks seems smoothed which changes the harsher look of the race (possibly just the faulty benchmark lighting)
• Hair lighting has changed; seems more matte, less hue variation between lit and shadowed areas
___
Changes I've seen in other players:
• Face skintone now seems very one-note and unalive
• Waxiness
• Harsher eye makeup that appears too dark or stark
• Removal of texture detail that was unique to individual faces, especially in eye regions
☆• Moon Miqo fangs drastically shortened
___
In seeing all of this unfold I've been dismayed to notice a lot of the unique charm of faces across the board being airbrushed away, from subtle shading in eye areas on various viera faces, to expressive and quirky default expressions being toned down and made more average in Elezen girls and Miqo girls, to wrinkles disappearing from older faces, to facial topology that created personality via cast shadows being rounded and smoothed and lightened into nonexistence. The result is consistently a more calm, mature, generic look. A lot of female characters' makeup has turned weirdly harsh, sharp-edged, and dark so that it more closely resembles stage makeup, both eye and lip. Then the awkwardly single-toned skin tops things off with me left feeling that very few looks are 'upgrades' even when the owner is happy with the result.
A couple side notes: Something odd is happening to the hairline on this style near the middle? Looks like an error. My racial gear necklaces have changed from a visible leather texture to some unidentifiable line-y texture?

on our fates alight--memo
Tumblr media
------
[REDACTED]
To: Esteemed Members of the Forum
From: REDACTED
Subject: Regarding reaching out to the Sharlayan Citizen Dominants aligned with the Scions of the Seventh Dawn.
You motherfuckers.
You stupid fucking self-centered idiots.
You utter buffoons.
I cannot believe I am aligned with such a group of supposedly intelligent men and women who, in their infinite wisdom, seem perpetually incapable of drawing an extremely straightforward conclusion based on the available evidence that is drawn not from tertiary records but from our very own reports.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Dominants in question are not like to return to Sharlayan, nor like to trust us or anyone in the city-state. Their families have betrayed them, they know no average citizen will help them, and the orders for their imprisonment and torture came from their government. It is only through their rather prodigious strength of will that they have survived the horrors inflicted upon them.
Nor will appealing to their better natures gain you any results.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
From all accounts, Sebastian Astralyas was a kind man, gentle to a fault. His only mistake in life was to trust now ex-Forum Member Iato and his assistant, Lacelle Glycen. Now that man is gone--killed by malice and cruelty. In his place is a soul that delights in violence, and already has left a trail of bodies in his wake. It is more than likely the Scions will at least temper his inclinations, but I imagine they will look the other way when it comes to his stated goal of vengeance.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
While initially being out of her element, having no experience in dealing with the world outside of our city--Riven DeGlass has shown remarkable adaptability. Furthermore, by this time it is common knowledge that there is no history on Valefor, which means any interactions with the Eikon are in uncharted territory.
After the experimentations that have occurred at Site Sixteen, and the things they were subjected to, which we have full evidence of, we should consider ourselves fortunate that they have chosen to band together with what seems to be, from all external observation, a reasonably benevolent organization that professes to be acting in the interest of the star.
And now you wish to ask them to return to Sharlayan on your terms. Instead of making the far more reasonable suggestion, which is for them to pool their strength together and revisit our shores on THEIR terms. Let them arrive Primed--let them come with the Scions--let them do whatever they want (naturally within reason) to feel safe.
Reach out if you must. I suggest sending a Forum member with sufficient standing so that the gesture is not misconstrued as anything other than sincere, but perhaps not so sufficient that we could tolerate their loss (as that is a very real possible outcome), proverbial hat in hand, and offer our most profuse apologies and an offer for restitution. Perhaps with some years of good faith interaction, they may deign to be willing to speak to us.
---
credit to @driftward for writing out the core of the memo and helping me put it together~!

You're busy? Don't have a Viera or a Lala or a Miqo'te but want to participate in a challenge anyway? We've got the perfect one for you over Etheirys: a chill challenge with 7 prompts to fill over 2 months, and a few spare ones in case you're not inspired by the full list!
And if you come on the forum directly to participate, you'll even get comments on your art. Isn't that nice?

The journey through Castrum Oriens went without a hitch, mostly forests until then really. Chocobo motion sickness also turnt out to be not-as-bad as ships (air or water). Fin was aware that it had been a region scarred by skirmishing, but the remains of the many battlefields still shocked him.
According to the map, there aren't many stops remaining, though the weather was getting hot enough for Fin to eventually consider temporarily ditching the rather dapper yet pointless sleeveless vests on top of his shirt.

why is it so difficult to find out how to make sephirot's weapons glow lmao
i stumble upon their true name while googling around OUT OF SHEER LUCK LMAO
they're not "sephirotic", they're "of the fiend". that's so un-intuitive.
why isn't this mentioned anywhere in-game.
the ITEM DESCRIPTION for sephirotic would be a great place!
this was so annoying to figure out smh
and it turns out, you dont even need?? the extreme weapon drops???
h u h????????
i mean, that's cool that's so accessible and all, i'm happy for that, but also - that don't make no sense to me... that fight was pretty challenging.... what do u mean, you can't also get the glowy version from that???? lmao?????? or, idk, make the extreme drop have a different colored glow. something.
/confusion

Lauri is a mom, so i feel her going to bestaways burrow is like. she’s a lot nicer about it than Zalia or my other wols might be because she is the kind of mom who puts her toddler’s art on the fridge and lets her do her hair, and stuff like that. so its like ‘you worked really hard on this and i’m proud of you’ even if they miss the mark somewhat

Hitting The Books
For those who missed the other books in Noumenon for the Level 80 Endwalker Main Scenario Quest. I’ve also included the ones that you do need to proceed with MSQ.
An Introduction to the Heavens
Have you ever gazed at the skies above and contemplated the mysteries contained therein? I speak not of shifting cloud patterns, but of the vastness beyond─of the sun and the twinkling tapestry of the night. Some think the dome above us to be a finite space, yet amongst the leading thinkers of our age, one scholar's depiction of a boundless sea of stars has firmly taken root. Alas, this heavenly sea remains an unreachable, unknowable destination. There are few indeed who can explain, in satisfactory detail, why our own star is believed to revolve around the sun. It was the technologists of Allag who came closest to understanding the laws which govern that starry abyss. It was they who launched Dalamud, and sought to expand beyond our earthbound existence. Having read of their ancient ambitions, I wonder: has your interest in this field of study waxed or waned? What if I were to tell you that the eternal constellations were arranged differently in the distant past? That their positions continue to shift almost imperceptibly but measurably as we journey into the future? Would it shock you to learn that the stars drift further and further apart, and may indeed do so forever? Are you eager to learn more?
Stewards of Wisdom
During the chaos of the Sixth Umbral Calamity, Archon Nyunkrepf, founder of Sharlayan, bore witness to the madness and savagery of men brought to the brink of despair. Upon raising a settlement on an island in the Northern Empty, he instructed his people thus: Renounce the ways of war, and pursue enlightenment through knowledge and reason. The Sharlayans took to heart the words of their savior, and thenceforth served as stewards of wisdom. Upon a foundation of accumulated learning, they built a homeland unlike any other─a nation born from strength of minds, rather than strength of arms. With knowledge of economics came shrewd trading. With knowledge of agriculture came bountiful crops. Engineering brought wells and sewers, ending squabbles over water. Wealth of expertise could be bartered for wealth in coin. And the more their wisdom spread throughout the world, the more mankind as a whole would thrive. And so it was that no matter the trials and tribulations of the age, the citizens of Sharlayan would live by their founder's teachings. For the sake of a better tomorrow─for the sake of a brighter star─they would eschew the tools of war, and with knowledge deliver the world.
Forever Twenty Summers
My beloved seekers of knowledge. Have you ever put learning before your health, and neglected to feed and rest your body as you should?  I, too, once engaged in such foolish practices. But one night, engrossed in philosophical study, I had an epiphany: For all the world's mysteries that drive us to reckless abandon, we have so very few years of life in which to achieve our goals. Thus do I share with you this mantra: I am forever twenty summers young. The number itself is unimportant─you could be nineteen, or twenty-three, or forty. Whatever age you are when you discover this manual, let that be the age you aspire to remain.  Through mindful, healthy living, will you extend the time available to spend upon your chosen research─another day, another moon, another summer to grasp the greater truths you pursue. In the pages that follow, we will explore the secrets of maintaining one's physical condition from a biological, aetherological, and arcane viewpoint...
The Story of Sharlayan
Long, long ago, on an island in the northern sea, there lived a Roegadyn man by the name of Nyunkrepf. Nyunkrepf was a student of astrology, and he divined that a flood of terrifying proportions would soon sweep over the lands of Eorzea. So it was that he built a gigantic ship, assembled a crew, and set sail for that imperiled realm. The flood arrived as foretold, and to their horror the strangely churning waters drove the people towards the ocean. It was there, however, that Nyunkrepf's crew hauled them aboard his ark, but the danger had not passed: a towering wave approached, threatening to smash the vessel to pieces! With only moments to spare, Nyunkrepf wove a mighty spell of teleportation, and shifted the entire ship to safety atop Abalathia's Spine. Refugees from the surrounding regions huddled there alongside them, but it was not long before disputes over the dwindling supply of food led to violence and bloodshed. Saddened by the sight, Nyunkrepf gathered to him his crew and his grateful passengers, and abandoned the ark to those reddened peaks. They journeyed to the coast where they built a new ship, intent upon returning to the northern seas. They landed on the beach of an island, and settled upon that very spot. That settlement prospered and grew, and in time it became the city of Sharlayan we live in to this day.
The Voice of a Growing City
In the years which followed the founding of Sharlayan, civic policy and other matters of import were decided at the Ecclesia─a public forum at which every citizen was eligible to speak. As the city's population grew, however, this format became increasingly impractical. The larger number of participants gave rise to ever-longer debates, resulting in significant delays of vital resolutions. Various measures were introduced in an attempt to curtail protracted discussions, but in the year 201 of the Sixth Astral Era, it was ultimately decreed that Sharlayan would transition to a new form of governance. The nation would now be led by a body of ninety-nine members─citizens chosen from amongst their peers by means of a nationwide vote. Thus was the Forum as we know it today conceived and created.
Roads of Old: The Colony
Many years ago, on the banks of the Thaliak in the Dravanian Hinterlands, a Sharlayan colony once thrived. This settlement was originally established as a mere outpost to study the aetherial sea in the year 1311 of the Sixth Astral Era. Scholars dispatched to Eorzea found the facilities wanting, and their demands encouraged a gradual expansion in structures and services. As rumors spread of a growing community of academics, the area was further inundated with Eorzean students hoping to share in the renowned wisdom of the Sharlayans.  Fifty years later, the Forum passed a motion to recognize what had become a flourishing town as an official Sharlayan colony. Eorzean residents took to calling the colony itself “Sharlayan,” which led to no small amount of confusion when discussions turned to the subject of the motherland. In response, some Sharlayan inhabitants, if pressed for a name, would simply refer to it as “Emporium.” Following the exodus, however, goblins and treasure hunters claimed for themselves a corner of the abandoned colony and gave it yet another name: Idyllshire.
