the hemicycle on the kirchberg plateau is an incredibly futuristic building that is somewhat hidden in the middle of the kirchberg forest. it looks like a film set for a dystopian film, so overgrown and lonely it stands on the road. fun fact: the european parliament, for which the building was originally built, only met four times in this building.

There's an official proposal to the EU to tax the rich!
You only need to be a EU citizen to sing it. The goal is 1 million signatures before october 2024, and we're already at 140.000!
If you need extra incentive to sign, the French have the most signatures as of right now. You wouldn't want the French to be better than you, right? And if you are French, well, Italians are second right now, you wouldn't want the Italians to catch up, right?
Please reblog so more people can see, EVEN IF YOU'RE NOT FROM THE EU!
MEP MICK WALLACE SLAMS EU FOR FAILURE TO TAKE ACTION ON GAZA
📹 MEP Mick Wallace slams the European Parliament for its failure to adopt a resolution calling for a ceasefire and condemning the Israeli occupation for its war crimes against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.
"The international legal system is at stake," Wallace says in a statement. "The Palestinians are being murdered in the tens of thousands."
The European Parliament voted 324-155, with 38 abstentions, to condemn the U.S. Supreme Court's overturning of Roe v. Wade and demand that abortion rights be enshrined in the EU’s fundamental rights charter.
Why It Matters: The Supreme Court's decision last month to end federal protections for abortion was widely denounced by world leaders and human rights organizations.
• In the wake of the ruling, lawmakers in Israel and France have taken steps to shore up their domestic protections for abortion.
The Big Picture: In the resolution, European MEPs expressed their solidarity with American women and girls and called for the U.S. Congress to pass federal protections for abortion, according to a European Parliament press release.
• The resolution called for EU countries to provide "safe, legal and free abortion services, pre-natal and maternal healthcare services, voluntary family planning, youth-friendly services, and HIV prevention, treatment and support, without discrimination."
What They're Saying: "The United States has clearly shown why we must use every tool available to safeguard abortion rights in the European Union,” said Stéphane Séjourné, the president of the liberal Renew Europe group in the EU Parliament, AP reported.
• “It teaches us a lesson: Women’s and girls’ human rights can never be taken for granted, and we must always fight to defend them,” Helene Fritzon, a Swedish politician who is vice president of a parliamentary alliance of Socialists and Democrats, added, per AP.
"I am not Syrian, I am not Ukrainian, I am not Yemeni, I am not Afghani. I am not from South Sudan. I am not from Israel or Palestine. I am not a politician. I am not even a pundit. But I am a witness. And having witnessed the human cost of war, violence and persecution visiting refugees from across the globe, I cannot look away. What sits at the core of my dual roles as actor and Goodwill Ambassador for UNHCR is the human condition, the human story." - Cate Blanchett
the robert schuman building is one of the oldest eu government buildings on luxembourg's kirchberg. it housed the first eu parliament. even today, it looks timeless amidst the surrounding hypermodern glass buildings.

This is literally magnificent. Miko Peled is a son of an IDF general, and yet, he not only acknowledges the truth, but also expresses it; openly and loudly.

16- and 17-year-olds will be able to vote for the European Parliament in Belgium for the first time this year.
Belgium knows a system of mandatory voting, in the sense that showing up to vote is compulsory - you don't have to vote for anyone if you don't want to, you can abstain from voting right then and there, but you do have to show up. For this reason, the Constitutional Court of Belgium ruled this would also need to be the case for 16- and 17-year-olds as well.
This would mean they would be susceptible to being sanctioned if they fail to turn out. However, yesterday, it was decided by the government that young people will not be given a fine if they don't turn out.
While those over 18 can still be fined and sued, in practice, people who don't turn out to vote aren't usually prosecuted.
Voter turnout in Belgium is one of the highest in the world, with 90% in the last federal elections (2019). Elections are always held on a Sunday. (I'm always so confuses when elections are held on weekdays in other countries, haha)
Mandatory voting was written into the Constitution in 1893, after a general strike organised by the then existing Belgian Labour Party (the first socialist party in Belgium). Voting was made mandatory so that bosses could not pressure their workers, who were usually from lower social classes, not to go vote (by making them work or threatening to fire them, for example).
If you live abroad, you can vote by mail. You can also vote by proxy.
i don't know if there is really a community discussing eu politics on tumblr, but if there is i would like to ask whether y'all understand why hoekstra was accepted by the parlement? his political and professional history basically consists out of working against climate policy, so why did they accept him on his word that actually, no, he does really care?
as a minister and party leader in the netherlands he actively worked against our climate policies, so i am really upset he even got put forward by our idiot in charge (who's not actually in charge anymore so why was it his decision anyway?!) when better candidates with the (literal) same credentials were available, and now he gets accepted too? just makes me question the eu and their choices, but maybe i missed something?
