Sailor Moon (particularly the 90s anime) - this is a big one! i remember drawing sailor moon in elementary school and playing pretend/LARPing sailor moon on the playground... the good old 90s anime style with the exaggerated expressions! cute girls! friendship! this general kind of soft, roundness to the style of the 90s anime? it has everything

Honey and Clover - this manga/anime means the world to me. i love the style, the way the mangaka draws emotions, but also the protagonist's story of finding himself? resonant. the manga especially is precious to me bc of the art tho, it has a sketchy quality that i love

Hey Arnold! - another childhood favorite... this one doesn't reflect on my actual style so much, but it's a big influence on the stories and characters i like and create. if i could make everyone watch only one cartoon, it would be hey arnold

this is a triple threat... Persona 5, sketchbooks, @meruz - if you look at more than one page of this blog, you can probably guess i like p5(r)!! a lot!! i love all the characters, even if you mostly see me drawing the protag and akechi bc i'm a shipper at heart lol... i'm always inspired by sketchbooks of other artists! especially proper sketchbooks, where they're messy and worked in and aren't curated to be "good looking" for people to look at. that said, this is a page meruz posted from one of their sketchbooks (go buy them) and i adore meruz's work! i got into their work a while back and their lineart really drew me in, the lineweight and use of spot blacks is delicious. i need to work more on those in my own art and meruz's work always makes me want to do just that

Dolls - and here we take a little detour from the obvious? i sadly don't own this doll :( she's a rune naito fashion doll and i want one so badly. i collect dolls, especially fashion dolls!! i love their designs!! i usually just leave them in their stock outfits bc those are part of the charm to me. i wanna draw my dolls more, but for now they're just a big influence on design and outfits for characters

Amanda Lafrenais - i've been following amanda for so many years i can't keep count anymore!! her style blends "western" and "anime" so well to me and also she just draws lots of pretty women?? also we love queens who draw different body types

Roleplaying (pixelated image from wiki-how) - i've been roleplaying, mostly just with my bestie erin, since i was like 14? i draw stuff inspired by our roleplays soooo much, whether it's from a scene or just "what if"s we threw around. erin is a brilliant writer, has great ideas, and she's basically the GM even tho it's collaborative writing-based rping lmao... im just like "erin come up with a plot and we can shoot ideas back and forth" lol

Drawfee - no idea anymore how i came across drawfee but it's a really fun and funny channel and i'll do some of their challenges on my own sometimes!! (my favorite is the 30s character from memory challenge, i'll have erin give me characters and time me) also they have a ttrpg-style series called Drawtectives that has great characters!!! also every time julia draws a scene im like "ah i want that to be me..."

The Golden Age of Illustration - i'm such a junkie for cartoons and anime and comics and such, i don't really know the classics OOPS... but in the past year or two i've gotten really into what's apparently known as the "golden age of illustration"!! roughly the 1880's to 1920s, there's a lot of fairy/folk tale art from this era and i'm obsessed with all of it. standout mentions that i love to look at the work of are kay nielsen and edmund dulac

honorable mentions are just... every manga i've ever loved. every artist i've ever obsessed over the art of. and HONORABLE honorable mention to drawingwiffwaffles who sadly hasn't updated in a few months... she got me back into traditional media tho and is a general delight to watch work

Ontario Cold Cases - The Podcast: Upcoming Episode on the disappearance of Erin McGonigal

Peel Regional Police said Erin McGonigal, who described working as a part-time model and go-go dancer in an online profile, was last seen by her husband on Oct. 6, 2015.

At the time, police said the couple had separated and she was moving from their home on Cedar Creek Lane, in the area of Dundas Street East and Cawthra Road.

Friends said she was very active on social media and hasn’t posted anything since she was last seen.

Homicide and missing persons bureau detective Mike Nielsen said her friends initially reported her missing on Nov. 24, 2015.

Although there has been no trace of her in more than four years, Nielsen said there is no evidence suggesting she is dead, was abducted or is being held against her will.

However, foul play has not been ruled out.

The hottest summer on record for many Texas cities has brought millions of dollars in damage to municipal plumbing and the loss of huge volumes of water during a severe drought.

Authorities across the state are struggling to keep up with widespread leakage even as they plead for water conservation and have restricted outdoor water use. The impact on Texas’ water systems highlights both the vulnerability of basic infrastructure to a warming climate and the high costs of adaptation.

“The intense heat and drop in annual rainfall have dried up the soil, causing a shift in water lines,” said Erin Jones, a spokesperson for the city of Houston, which logged its hottest summer on record this year. “When the pipes shift, the pipe joints can break, causing water leaks.”

She said the municipal government in Houston was taking 500 calls per week for water leaks, up from 300 around this time in 2022, when drought conditions were less severe. The city, which budgets almost $20 million annually for water line repairs, has authorized an additional $33 million in spending this year to bring in contractors to help municipal workers with repairs, Jones said.

In addition to the dry, shifting soil, the leaks result from the brittleness of aging pipes and a high demand on the city’s water infrastructure despite the conservation appeals and edicts. “The demand on the system continues to increase due to customers’ using more water and increased water leaks,” Jones said.

Leaking pipes cost Texas billions of gallons of water and hundreds of millions of dollars annually. Texas water utilities reported 30.6 billion gallons lost to breaks and leaks in 2021, the most recent year for which data is available. The Texas Water Development Board, a state water authority, estimated an additional 101.6 billion gallons of unreported loss that year.

Those losses collectively accounted for 12 percent of total reported water use and cost the state an estimated $266 million (which considers the production cost of the water lost, not the repairs to busted pipes) in 2021. That year, Texas enjoyed below-average summer temperatures and a near-total absence of drought conditions. The figures for this year, which will not be published until 2024, are likely to show far higher loss rates and attendant costs.

This year, record-breaking temperatures hit Texas in late June and lingered through early September—part of a global heat wave that also set records from China to Morocco to Bolivia and made this summer the world’s hottest since at least 1940.

The US Drought Monitor currently shows more than half of Texas experiencing “severe drought,” and nearly one-third “extreme drought.” The groundwater in aquifers is declining, and some reservoirs are nearing alarmingly low levels.

For the state as a whole, this summer was the second-hottest on record, ranking behind 2011 and ahead of 2022, according to John Nielsen-Gammon, director of the Southern Regional Climate Center at Texas A&M University. (For meteorologists, summer runs from June through August.)

For several cities in addition to Houston, it was the hottest. Among them was San Antonio, where water main breaks averaged about 470 per month from January to June and then jumped to 725 in July and 1,076 in August as extreme heat bore down.

And that doesn’t factor in the burden borne by others for repairs to pipes on private property tying water mains to homes and businesses. “It’s been a rough summer,” said Anne Hayden, a spokesperson for the San Antonio Water System.

Laredo, where the season tied the summer of 2011 as the hottest on record, spent $464,000 on 89 water main repairs in July and August, according to the city water utility, up from $106,000 on 72 repairs in 2021.

Fixing even a minor break can be pricey, because pipes typically lie beneath roadways. In Austin, repairs can cost the city anywhere from $5,000 to $10,000 per incident, according to Joe Hoepken, a supervising engineer at Austin Water.

“Typically a repair is going to entail ripping into asphalt or concrete,” Hoepken said. “Then it’s cutting out a few feet of the bad pipe that ruptured and sleeving on a section of newer pipe.” After that, the city transportation department resurfaces the spot where repairs took place.

Austin repaired 464 water mains and service lines in July and August, up from 300 in 2021 and 435 in 2022.

In West Texas, KOSA News reported a surge in water main breaks disrupting service for customers in Midland late last month. And in North Texas, KJTL News reported a similar increase in Wichita Falls.

Even before this summer’s damage, Texas cities were struggling to keep up with the costs of addressing water leaks, said Perry Fowler, executive director of the Texas Water Infrastructure Network, a water-sector lobbying group.

He said that state legislators had that in mind this year when they authorized the creation of a $1 billion Texas Water Fund that will provide aid to water supply and wastewater projects across the state. Voters will decide on the measure, known as Proposition 6, in a referendum in November.

Fowler said that while the fund would help finance repairs of water leaks, it won’t solve the overarching problem.

“It’s a significant amount, but it’s not going to be substantial enough to have a water infrastructure investment renaissance in Texas,” he said. “The challenges out there with the aging infrastructure are widespread.”

Kaitlan Collins’ Big CNN Debut? Spongebob Squarepants Got Bigger Ratings.

Kaitlan Collins, who made her name playing gadfly throughout former President Donald Trump’s term in office, didn’t do so well when she got her own show on CNN.

Her debut at 9 p.m. on CNN primetime — “The Source With Kaitlan Collins” — was less watched than a slew of sitcom and animated reruns, Radar Online reported. The show came in dead last against its cable news competition with just 540,000 viewers and wasn’t even the top primetime show on CNN, coming in second.

Nielsen ratings showed that Collins’ show came in behind repeats of the “Golden Girls,” “South Park,” “Seinfeld,” “Friends,” and “Modern Family.” Even “SpongeBob Squarepants” beat the lame show.

Within CNN’s prime time lineup, Wolf Blitzer had 639,000 viewers, Erin Burnett 576,000, and Anderson Cooper 600,000. For comparison outside the network, Fox News’ Sean Hannity’s show — which runs at the same time — brought in 1.95 million total viewers.

Collins was moved into the slot by then-network head Chris Licht, following what he called her “masterful performance” while moderating a town hall with Trump.

“Her new program, officially launching later this summer, Kaitlan will showcase why she’s one of the top reporters and interviewers in the game,” Licht said in a memo. “She is a smart and gifted journalist who we’ve all seen hold lawmakers and newsmakers accountable. She pushes politicians off their talking points, gets real answers — and as everyone who’s worked with her knows — breaks a lot of news.”

But Licht got fired shortly after the change, and that doesn’t bode well for Collins. The former CEO had hoped that Collins, 31, would draw younger viewers — but she didn’t. She pulled just 83,000 viewers in the key 25-54 age demo, which sets advertising. Hannity, meanwhile, had 188,000 and MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow nearly tripled Collins with 231,000.

Ed eccoci giunti all'ultimo post dell'anno e, per concludere in bellezza, di seguito trovate le dieci meraviglie che ho scoperto nel 2020. Questa lista sarà un po' strana: innanzitutto i libri non sono classificati in base al punteggio in stelline che gli ho assegnato, infatti alcuni libri da quattro stelline e mezzo sono più in alto in classifica rispetto a libri con punteggio pieno, semplicemente ci sono dei romanzi che riconosco essere tutt'altro che perfetti ma che ho amato ugualmente. In secondo luogo ho inserito tre libri al primo posto a parimerito: sono fra le storie migliori che abbia mai letto e non avrei mai potuto scegliere un solo vincitore! Buona lettura!

8: GLI OTTIMISTI MUOIONO PRIMA-SUSIN NIELSEN (****,1/2)

Un romanzo di formazione che parla d’amore, di solitudine e di amicizia, di lutto e di senso di colpa. Il tutto trattato in modo profondo e minuzioso, ma con una pungente ironia che alleggerisce la storia. Un libro che mi ha tenuto compagnia facendomi ridere ed emozionare e che consiglio moltissimo.

7: DIVISA IN DUE-SHARON M DRAPER (*****)

Ho conosciuto l’autrice grazie a Melody, un libro che ho letto e amato qualche anno fa, e, ancora una volta, sono rimasta stupita dalla sua bravura nello scrivere e nel trattare di temi come la disabilità, in Melody, e il razzismo, in Divisa in Due. Sono sicura che coloro che hanno amato Wonder non potranno che rimanere ammaliati anche da questi due libri.

6: TENEBRE E OSSA-LEIGH BARDUGO (*****)

Tenebre e Ossa è il primo romanzo scritto da un’autrice fenomenale che sicuramente è la mia preferita fra quelle scoperte quest’anno. La Bardugo è evidentemente dotata di poteri sovrannaturali che le permettono di rendere incredibile tutto ciò che scrive. Più probabilmente invece questo è semplicemente il risultato di un grande talento sommato a dedizione e cura dei minimi dettagli.

5: FALCE-NEAL SHUSTERMAN (****,1/2)

Quando fantascienza e distopia incontrano il genio di Neal Shusterman e una profonda riflessione sull’immortalità nasce quel libro incredibile che è Falce. Un romanzo che forse non ha dato il massimo per quanto riguarda i personaggi, ma che dà da pensare come pochi altri.

4: L’ATTRAVERSASPECCHI (PRIMI 2 VOLUMI) -CHRISTELLE DABOS (*****)

Una saga bizzarra ed estremamente originale che probabilmente, se non fosse per la sua infelice conclusione, si sarebbe piazzata anche più in alto in questa classifica. Ho amato tutto di Fidanzati dell’Inverno e gli Scomparsi di Chiardiluna e non posso che consigliare caldamente la serie d’esordio della Dabos di cui ho già parlato in quattro post sul blog.

3: IL SILENZIO DELL’ACQUA-LOUISE O’NEILL (****,1/2)

Questa rivisitazione femminista della celebre storia della Sirenetta mi ha colpita moltissimo, si tratta di una denuncia chiara e molto cruda della società odierna attuata tramite una fedele rielaborazione della fiaba che tutti conosciamo. Un ottimo esempio di come la letteratura, anche fantasy, non sia solo un modo per evadere dalla realtà, ma anche una lente tramite cui comprenderla.

2: IL PRIORATO DELL’ALBERO DELLE ARANCE-SAMANTHA SHANNON (*****)

Un romanzo epico e indimenticabile che presenta un mondo vastissimo dalla cultura ricca ed elaborata. La Shannon ha uno stile che ho apprezzato molto e che ci accompagna alla scoperta del suo mondo, dei suoi personaggi e di tutto ciò che crea in queste 800 pagine di pura meraviglia.

1: SEI DI CORVI-LEIGH BARDUGO (*****)

Quando si dice che la perfezione non esiste Sei di Corvi e Regno Corrotto, i capolavori della Bardugo, sono ottimi contro argomenti. Questa saga presenta una trama e dei personaggi spettacolari che mi hanno fatta innamorare sin dai primi capitoli e che, se fosse per me, dovrebbe essere letta da tutti. Ho spiegato più approfonditamente la mia opinione sulla serie in due post, ma essa può essere facilmente riassunta con la parola “adorazione”.

1: IL MARE SENZA STELLE-ERIN MORGENSTERN (*****)

Il Mare Senza Stelle non è un libro, ma una poesia che parla direttamente al cuore dei lettori. Leggerlo è un sogno fatto di carta e inchiostro stampato. Un romanzo estremamente simbolico e atmosferico che crea una moltitudine di sensazioni vividissime abilmente orchestrate dallo stile onirico della Morgenstern. Questo, come anche gli altri libri al primo posto di questa classifica, non è solo il più bel libro del 2020, ma anche uno dei migliori che abbia letto da quando ho preso in mano un libro la prima volta.

1: 1984-GEORGE ORWELL (*****)

Il gruppo di lettura che sto seguendo, che tante volte ho nominato nella lista dei libri peggiori del 2020, ha recuperato notevolmente facendomi scoprire uno dei miei libri preferiti con la lettura del mese di dicembre. 1984 è un classico geniale, un capolavoro estremamente contemporaneo pur essendo un libro così vecchio, il padre della letteratura distopica. Leggendo questo romanzo si rimane sconvolti dalla sensazione di star leggendo della nostra attualità pur trattandosi di un romanzo di quasi un secolo fa e dallo stile moderno del suo autore.

Peel Regional Police said Erin McGonigal, who described working as a part-time model and go-go dancer in an online profile, was last seen by her husband on Oct. 6, 2015.

At the time, police said the couple had separated and she was moving from their home on Cedar Creek Lane, in the area of Dundas Street East and Cawthra Road.

Friends said she was very active on social media and hasn’t posted anything since she was last seen.

Homicide and missing persons bureau detective Mike Nielsen said her friends initially reported her missing on Nov. 24, 2015.

Although there has been no trace of her in more than four years, Nielsen said there is no evidence suggesting she is dead, was abducted or is being held against her will.

However, foul play has not been ruled out.
