Here we go. My very favorite first. They are perfect in that photograph.

Some others:

The "royal mob" as Queen Victoria would say...it is a picture for the history books.

I never thought a picture of the Queen Mother would be a favorite but I fell in love with this one when I saw it.

I think Alix, Nicky and Minnie look very royal there, without the need for a crown.

The Grand Duchesses...look at Alexandra Iosifovna. She looks like the Queen of the world.

Acho que pouco se fala de Rhaenyra ser inspirada na imperatriz Matilda (ou Maude), e menos ainda em Alicent ser talvez baseada na Condessa Matilda, rival da imperatriz e apoiadora do Rei Stephen, primo e rival de Maude pelo trono durante a guerra civil conhecida como "Anarquia".

Foi ela que fez acordo com o rei da Escócia para que ele voltasse em paz para o seu reino, e foi ela quem comandou o exército (junto do irmão do marido) que fez a imperatriz fugir de Londres e que depois prendeu o meio-irmão da mesma e a fez libertar o marido da Condessa. Graças a Rainha, o rei estava solto e a rival teve de fugir das terras pelas quais ela dizia ter direito.

Alicent não tomou conta da queda da Rhaenyra durante seu curto tempo como prisioneira, mas cuidou para que as coisas na Capital se acalmassem até o filho voltar, fazendo acordos com o Lorde de Ponta Tempestade e acabando com os "Falsos Reis" de Porto Real.

Mas é interessante notar que a Rhaenyra é bem diferente da imperatriz que a inspirou, visto que Matilda sofreu com graves revoltas quase que imediatas em sua chegada à Londres, dado o fato de ser mulher (e talvez fosse vista como "estrangeira" dado o fato de que ficou longe de seu país/reino durante a maior parte de sua vida); Rhaenyra também sofreria com essas coisas, porém, foi aclamada ao conquistar a cidade (diferente da imperatriz, que era menos amada que seu primo, Rhaenyra era um pouco mais bem vista que seu rival), mas seu curto reinado foi bem pior do que de Maude, visto suas péssimas decisões políticas e mesquinhas.

Vale a pena notar que ambas tiveram problemas ao cobrar impostos, mas Rhaenyra foi muito pior nisso do que Maude; dado que eles não eram apenas exorbitantes, mas até mesmo cruéis (com direito a execuções diárias e cobradas e até mendigos tendo que pagar algo).

Particularmente, a personalidade de Rhaenyra é mais "única" que a de Maude. A Princesa de Viserys estava mais próxima de Mary Stuart, ou de monarcas absolutistas, como Charles I ou Henry VIII, não se importando com o quanto suas decisões (no minímo questionáveis em muitos momentos) poderiam prejudicar sua campanha para o trono, ou mesmo o seu reinado.

Falando um pouco do rei Aegon e de sua inspiração, o Rei Stephen, ambos viriam a ser reis fracos e não muito famosos e habilidosos. Stephen pelo menos foi inteligente na parte do comércio em Londres e até ajudou em cercos e algumas batalhas (em uma delas, seu exército perdeu e foi capturado pela inconsequência do rei), mas praticamente todos concordam que foi seu irmão e sua esposa quem eram os verdadeiros comandantes de sua facção -fosse por meios políticos ou militares.

Aegon seria menos amado ainda, tendo uma pretensão mais forte que a de Stephen sobre Maude (que era apenas um primo e nem era o filho mais velho do tio de Maude para sequer herdar algo), Aegon teria uma pretensão boa o bastante para rivalizar (e, pelo menos para alguns, superar) sua meia-irmã mais velha.

Mas Aegon não poderia se vangloriar de muito além disso: ele não era astuto politicamente como sua mãe e avô, nem era amado pela plebe como sua esposa-irmã, não tinha popularidade entre nobres como seu irmão Daeron e nem seria habilidoso como Aemond. Se ele era assim porque sua mãe e avô quiseram (para obter monopólio do trono) ou porque era simplesmente inútil, não sabemos...

Mas Viserys é o maior culpado, visto que deixou Aegon largado para ser um mimado sem terras. Se o pai de Aegon fez isso para ele não ser bom politicamente e não ser uma ameaça a Rhaenyra, ou apenas se ele simplesmente estava feliz em deixar seu filho se divertir sem problemas, também é dúbio.

Como Stephen, Aegon entrou imprudentemente em batalha contra Meleys; diferente do rei inglês, ele não preso... Mas gravemente ferido e quase morto. Porém, ao contrário do rei inglês, Aegon conseguiu não ser pego pelas garras da facção e inimiga e, numa surpreendente mudança de jogo, Rhaenyra acabou sendo pega pelas garras de Aegon, que conseguiu por um fim na vida de sua rival.

Ironicamente (de forma pensada pelo autor ou não), a morte de Aegon pode ser um pouco semelhante à do filho de Stephen, Eustace: o herdeiro do rei morreu engasgado com em um banquete, com alguns suspeitando que ele foi na realidade envenenado.

Seja qual for a verdade, a guerra entre o filho de Stephen e o filho de Maude, o futuro rei Henry II, foi encerrada antes de acontecer; da mesma forma que a morte de Aegon II acabou de vez com a guerra civil da Dança.

Esse artificio já foi usado por Martin na morte de Joffrey:

"[...]Baseei-o um pouco na morte de Eustace, filho do rei Stephen da Inglaterra. Stephen usurpou a coroa de sua prima, a imperatriz Maude(Matilda), e eles travaram uma longa guerra civil e a anarquia e a guerra seriam passadas para a segunda geração, porque Maude teve um filho e Henry e Stephen tiveram um filho. Mas Eustace morreu engasgado em um banquete. As pessoas ainda estão debatendo mil anos depois: ele se engasgou até a morte ou foi envenenado? Porque ao remover Eustace, trouxe uma paz que pôs fim à guerra civil inglesa. A morte de Eustace foi aceita [como acidental], e acho que era isso que os assassinos esperavam – todo o reino verá Joffrey morrer engasgado com um pedaço de torta ou algo assim. Mas o que eles não contavam era a suposição imediata de Cersei de que isso era assassinato. Cersei não se deixou enganar por isso nem por um segundo. Ela não acredita que foi uma morte acidental. Você viu a cena filmada, parece que ele pode estar apenas engasgando ou está muito claro que ele foi envenenado?”

Se foi o caso do Aegon II ou não, não sabemos, mas a semelhança é notável e, assim como após a morte de Eustace, acordos de paz foram feitos para coroar o filho de Rhaenyra.

Diferente de Maude, Rhaenyra não viveu para ver seu filho ter sucesso naquilo em que ela fracassou, mas sua linhagem ainda perdurou, diferente da de seu terrível meio-irmão.

*Curiosamente, um dos maiores defensores de Aegon II, que escreveu uma versão pró-green dele e de sua facção, também se chamava Eustace*

The 8,000 mourners filed out of Vienna’s St. Stephen’s Cathedral and fell in line behind the catafalque drawn by six black horses. Two hours later the procession ended at the Capuchin Church, where, in keeping with tradition, a member of the funeral party knocked on the door and a priest asked, “Who goes there?”

The titles were read aloud: “Queen of Bohemia, Dalmatia, Croatia, Slavonia, Galicia. Queen of Jerusalem. Grand Duchess of Tuscany and Cracow…”

“I do not know her,” said the father.

A second knock and “Who goes there?” brought the response, “Zita, Empress of Austria and Queen of Hungary.” Again the reply, “I do not know her.”

When the inevitable question was put a third time, the answer was simply, “Zita, a sinning mortal.”

“Come in,” said the priest, opening wide the door not for royalty, but for a faithful member of the Church, whose life had finally reached its end.
