hi so remember when i reblogged that gay webcomic??? yeah i've thought of an oc but i have far too many projects that i'm procrastinating on that i really shouldn't think of drawing something else (actually though i've got this very excessive Kyary Pamyu Pamyu fanart with references to past MVs, a cat based on PONPONPON, some Elmy fanart, my enby oc's character sketch, and this cat cafe concept where i drew cats based on foods people typically serve at cafes and a drawing of me and a friend that has left the country and is currently in Canada) so here imma give you some details instead
there may or may not be gore-ish kind of under the cut but also i kind of don't feel like forcing you to read a literal essay
also while i was studying today i was playing the ost of my favorite movie (which is a whisker away if you didn't know) and that may or may not influence what i thought of while creating this character in my head
so they have no name cuz i can't think of one
(she/they)
very talented at art cuz yes i am talented too (i think) but they're so freaking goooooooooooooood
the Protector™ of the queer peeps at said school
pretty much posted the entire thing (as in the romance and the notes and whatever) on this hellsite
has learnt the art of MURDER for this thing.
okay don't cross them.
they WILL LIVE TO SEE THIS QUEER COUPLE LIVE HAPPILY EVER AFTER. so please don't be queerphobic. unless you'd like to be sent to the ER.
anyways they practically guarded Damian and Ollie's lockers before Damian got a phone somehow don't ask
and if anyone other than Damien or Ollie touched those notes on the lockers. the ppor person would probably get dropkicked and end up being severely traumatized and get the living daylights knocked out of their being.
and because that scene in nakineko was a thing where Miyo jumps off ths school building
i thought one day she/they just randomly walks around during lunch, hanging out with friends at like the upper corridors and then suddenly??? some random dudes start being a-holes (i don't use swear words don't judge me) and then they start trash talking about them and she/they is. the most PISSED PERSON ON THE PLANET RIGHT NOW and yells at them to take it back but they ignore she/they and then she/they yells at them again and then they piss her off a bit more cuz they're queerphobic little rats or something and then she jumps off the building into a tree so SHE/THEY doesn't/don't die but ends up getting a butt ton of scratches and bleeding wounds anyways so. she/they walks up to a-hole peeps.
and in the back Damian is RUNNING and carrying Ollie (you read that correctly) and then Damian drops Ollie, half expecting him to pick himself up. um they just arrived to see the tea and im not sure if they know that she/they put their notes under high security cuz i haven't figured that out yet but sometime soon i shall
all the while she/they is suffering from blood loss and after some "WHAT DID YOU SAY???"s and "DON'T YOU DARE"s and stuff the rude peeps are just like "...let's get out of here" and of course because Damian and Ollie were part of the crowd that gathered and they were mentioned or something, um, eyes are also on them or something idk i can't describe a school fight i've never been part of one and haven't seen one yet unless my memory sucks
anyways she/they walks up to the couple and is like im sorry you had to see this :((( but i can't just let them slander you guys like this and then literally just collapses on the floor, head hitting the ground and then passes out
and while she/they is literally just lying there, bleeding out someone finally gets the sense to call an ambulance
and then flash forward to the ER where she/they is rn i guess, not sure what injuries to give them
and that is everything i can think of so far because i'm tired and probably should go to sleep but i can't otherwise i'd forget and then i'd never forgive myself for forgetting something that's related one of the most important posts here
also we need more of that wlw couple as in NEED

since i haven’t seen anyone else bring it up and i think it’s a key piece of understanding the show as a whole, i wanted to do a quick spotlight on why olu and frenchie’s names themselves are part of the next level commentary on race and colonialism this show is making.
okay: first, let’s take olu. oluwande boodhari, if you’re absolutely in love with him because the way he says cake sends you to another plane of existence. (i’m not going to get to make a lot of jokes this post without it being ghoulish at absolute fucking best, so that’s me shooting my one shot here because samson truly did do wonders, there.) both his first and last name are african (most modern day oluwandes seem to be from nigeria, unless google has led me astray), and he shares a last name with “a pioneer in the genre of somali love poems” named elmi boodhari from the 1900′s.
(i’d never heard of him before i did some googling to solidify my facts and make sure i’m not talking out my ass in a few places here so i can’t say more than that, but i plan to immediately track down everything i can.)
we can draw a couple conclusions from this: if olu wasn’t born somewhere in africa himself (which seems likely, but i don’t want to claim it’s a slam dunk), he was abolutely born somewhere his people were still allowed to speak in their own language.
i used allowed on purpose: one of the very first tricks in the colonizer’s and thus the enslaver’s toolkit is to go for the sacred things first. once the bloody slog of conquest is more or less done, and they’ve settled into the centers of power so they can get to work putting down anyone left alive who has the audacity to think they shouldn’t be grateful for these good works and the god they say demands these things. i don’t just mean replacing any indigenous religions with christianity, although that is a huge part of it. the more pertinent part of it here is that they went for language; names, places, the very structures of how the people they invaded defined their own realities.
it’s practical, if you’re an absolute fucking demon: when you don’t allow and harshly punish if not just straight up murder people who attempt to speak in a language you don’t understand, it’s harder for them to do what is good and right and try to fucking kill you down to the last stupid asshole still left kicking around. it’s also a form of psychological warfare, and it was done on purpose. we have the receipts! this shit was planned. like izzy said: you don’t get fed when you get invaded, and you live at your invader’s pleasure. (“back to work, you useless fucking fuckers”, he said. this show is just... so fucking good. i’m genuinely blown away.)
which brings us to frenchie. like i said: colonizers and enslavers went for language right away. that meant a bunch of people needed names in a language that was in the process of being shoved down their throats. there were a lot of bible names, of course, because White Colonizer Jesus will have his due, and a lot of family names taken from enslavers, but also a lot of place names. port cities, but also countries.
so we have frenchie, who was “in service”, and in a blink and you miss it moment, tries to tell everybody exactly what the french call the misfortune that follows the demons who follow the crystals what are contained within women. whether or not that means frenchie has been in france himself, it makes it a pretty logical assumption his life (or one of his fairly recent ancestors’) was impacted by france’s involvement in the history/legacy of enslavement.
i’m far from an expert on that so i’ll leave it there at the “these are the history facts i know” angle, but i will say if you’ve never looked into this stuff you should. real fucked up, and real important to know about if you want to be a thoughtful member of the world.
i want to close on this: though this is not my lane, it feels like malpractice to not mention it alongside their names and the different histories they evoke. i would direct people to the many, many black writers out there right now talking about colorism because the fact that olu’s skin is darker than frenchie’s is also important to the commentary at work here. i don’t feel qualified to do more than acknowledge i think it’s necessary to know about if you want to really understand this show and say “the people who live that experience are the ones who should be explaining it, not me” but it’s absolutely there.

Thought I share the kind of individual Elmis was going to be in “her earliest concept” and might as well share how did I even come up with her in the first place.
Well, it all started literally at 7:14 AM in the library of my school and I was messing around with someone. I don’t remember what we were even discussing at that moment (probably fanchildren) but as soon as the bell rang they told me something along the lines that “what I am missing now it is making a krusie kid.” At first, I was like “Pfft, a krusie kid? no way, it would be funny tho’ so I will draw them in MS paint during class!” and with that we went to our classes.
I did draw her in MS paint (maybe later I’ll share the drawings) and she was the edgiest kid I ever drew (that I could recall). She looked almost exactly as the drawing above. She had no snout, had more teeth, had longer and wavy hair, and smaller clothes. Even before deciding to make her female she was non-binary.
It was a joke between me and them at first and thought I was gonna drop her there but damn little did I knew :/
I was starting to already make up a story and personality for her in my mind and it was... so negative. She was... the embodiment of hardcore suicidal depression and psychopathy and her ending was not nice at all (or satisfying...?) and partially all this was influenced by myself ‘cuz I am... dealing with personal matters I projected onto Elmis but then it hit me that if I wanted to turn things around I should cooperate so, at the end, Elmis became probably the most positive and happiest character I have.
I might not share much of “Els” (That is how I call this scrapped concept of Elmis) around here but surely in my IG I do cuz she is most known. After all, I show a lot of processes and thinking both art wise and person wise in there that it is easy to be involved in whatever new I am coming up (that is why here and other places where I share my art is so dead, I already showed stuff once and totally forget about the other sites).
You might be wondering if she is a scrapped concept of a character then why is she still relevant? well, it is mostly thanks to my friends. They are the ones giving her the opportunity to appear and interact with their characters and they appreciate her despite Els not being the true Elmis anymore. See it as salvation I guess lol.
According to the stuff Els do, I will not say due to the fact it is not suitable to even be talked. Maybe I’ll share more drawings of her around here for you to see what I mean but it is less likely since she is not the true Elmis anymore... but maybe you already have an idea of what I mean...

I just notice there’s a lot lf drawings i have mostly posted on instagram but completely forgot to post here. Some weeks ago i sketched a conversation between Noah (my krusie fanchild) and Elmis (who belongs to @j3nny-4nd-p4ls and @elmis-smile).
Noah came to terms with the idea of dying young, at least while he’s a kid, things take a turn later but i still need to draw more about that.

Samurai Flamenco, Goto/Masayoshi, “Feast”  (R-15)
Masayoshi finds that cooking fancy meals isn’t particularly easy.
R-15 for implications of how it ends. Author is Lady Harken
——————-
For a book titled 'Fancy cooking made easy', Masayoshi had expected a little easier-to-follow instructions. Certainly, there was a clear list of ingredients and exact amounts of stuff that were needed. He had made sure to buy all the ingredients listed and get all the tools, but here he was, staring at the cook book and not making any sense out of it.
"Marinade meat in the fridge overnight," he read aloud. All right, so the marinade needed the ingredients he had prepared but... What was this? "Overnight?" He mumbled, frustrated. "I have maybe an hour!"
Despairing at this point wasn't acceptable, he thought, determined again. So perhaps it would've been better to settle to some fancier type of curry, but he had come this far. Goto was definitely getting his fancy dinner today. It just happened Goto had mentioned the other day about wanting to eat meat, and Masayoshi was absolutely going to make him something good to eat, and this book was supposed to have everything he needed to know.
Just plain slapping the marinade on the meat right now would have to do it, he decided. It would get to set for however long he had before he would slap it on the frying pan and- Wait, how did this part go again... He stared at the book and went through the instructions step by step. Temperature, how long to fry, all that, good. It would work out.
He still needed to set up the table, too. Fanciest plates he could find, a bottle of wine that according to the book went great with all the food. He had also asked for advice about fancy dinners and figured Mari and the others would know - right, Mizuki had said something about a candle, now that he stopped to think of the advice they had given. A fancy dinner required some candles, so those came next.
After the table was all done, he went back to the cooking. If this was enough time for the marinade, he didn't know, but he was out of options. Pre-heat frying pan... He stopped to read the instruction again, narrowing his eyes. He was not screwing this up, no matter what.
Following instructions he was capable of doing, at least, though by the time he picked the meat from the frying pan, they looked just slightly... crispy. Yes, crispy. Not burned, he convinced himself. Now he needed to finish with the vegetables for the side dish and...
"...What... The hell?"
Masayoshi snapped out of it at the familiar voice, realizing at that point that Goto was standing there with his work clothes on, staring at him. "Oh, welcome home!" He quickly said, wondering exactly when Goto had gotten here. He definitely hadn't heard the door opening - or maybe he had just been too busy with the frying pan. "Dinner's... uh, okay, not exactly ready yet, but if you..." He trailed off, studying Goto curiously. There was something odd in the way he was staring at him - something between completely surprised and - something else, he wasn't exactly sure. "Is something the matter?"
There was a long period of silence, during which Goto looked like he wanted to say about a thousand things but couldn't really settle for one. "...Why are you naked?" He finally managed to ask.
Masayoshi blinked. "Huh? I'm not naked, I have an apron on!" He replied. "If you mean about my pants, I dropped some marinade on them while making it and tossed them in the wash. And it's really hot here having to do all this, so I took my shirt off," he explained, pointing at the discarded shirt lying across the room. "But really, go get yourself cleaned and ready, dinner's gonna be..."
That was about as far as he got, as Goto was suddenly pinning him against the kitchen counter. "Uhhh... Wait, what..."
"Dinner can wait," Goto muttered, slipping his hand under the apron.
End. ——————- Author’s notes: Based on a drawing Elmy did for Kasa once. For Kasa yes. Originally supposed to be inspiration for studying but I took too long with this so now it serves as a thank you for beta-ing all those fics for us lately!

ACT I. SC. I
Enter Teryth from riding, Winefred following.
T. WHAT is it, Gwen, my girl? why do you hover and haunt me?
W. You came by Caerwys, sir?
T. I came by Caerwys.
W. There
Some messenger there might have met you from my uncle.
T. Your uncle met the messenger—met me; and this the message:
Lord Beuno comes to-night.
W. To-night, sir!
T. Soon, now: therefore
Have all things ready in his room.
W. There needs but little doing.
T. Let what there needs be done. Stay! with him one companion,
His deacon, Dirvan Warm: twice over must the welcome be,
But both will share one cell.—This was good news, Gwenvrewi.
W. Ah yes!
T. Why, get thee gone then; tell thy mother I want her.
Exit Winefred.
No man has such a daughter. The fathers of the world
Call no such maiden ‘mine’. The deeper grows her dearness
And more and more times laces round and round my heart,
The more some monstrous hand gropes with clammy fingers there,
Tampering with those sweet bines, draws them out, strains them, strains them;
Meantime some tongue cries ‘What, Teryth! what, thou poor fond father!
How when this bloom, this honeysuckle, that rides the air so rich about thee,
Is all, all sheared away, thus!’ Then I sweat for fear.
Or else a funeral, and yet ’tis not a funeral,
Some pageant which takes tears and I must foot with feeling that
Alive or dead my girl is carried in it, endlessly
Goes marching thro’ my mind. What sense is this? It has none.
This is too much the father; nay the mother. Fanciful!
I here forbid my thoughts to fool themselves with fears.
Enter Gwenlo.
. . . . . . . .
ACT II.—Scene, a wood ending in a steep bank over a dry dene, Winefred having been murdered within. Re-enter Caradoc with a bloody sword.
C. My heart, where have we been? What have we seen, my mind?
What stroke has Caradoc’s right arm dealt? what done? Head of a rebel
Struck off it has; written upon lovely limbs,
In bloody letters, lessons of earnest, of revenge;
Monuments of my earnest, records of my revenge,
On one that went against me whйreas I had warned her—
Warned her! well she knew. I warned her of this work.
What work? what harm ’s done? There is no harm done, none yet;
Perhaps we struck no blow, Gwenvrewi lives perhaps;
To makebelieve my mood was—mock. O I might think so
But here, here is a workman from his day’s task sweats.
Wiped I am sure this was; it seems not well; for still,
Still the scarlet swings and dances on the blade.
So be it. Thou steel, thou butcher,
I cбn scour thee, fresh burnish thee, sheathe thee in thy dark lair; these drops
Never, never, never in their blue banks again.
The woeful, Cradock, O the woeful word! Then what,
What have we seen? Her head, sheared from her shoulders, fall,
And lapped in shining hair, roll to the bank’s edge; then
Down the beetling banks, like water in waterfalls,
It stooped and flashed and fell and ran like water away.
Her eyes, oh and her eyes!
In all her beauty, and sunlight to it is a pit, den, darkness,
Foam-falling is not fresh to it, rainbow by it not beaming,
In all her body, I say, no place was like her eyes,
No piece matched those eyes kept most part much cast down
But, being lifted, immortal, of immortal brightness.
Several times I saw them, thrice or four times turning;
Round and round they came and flashed towards heaven: O there,
There they did appeal. Therefore airy vengeances
Are afoot; heaven-vault fast purpling portends, and what first lightning
Any instant falls means me. And I do not repent;
I do not and I will not repent, not repent.
The blame bear who aroused me. What I have done violent
I have like a lion done, lionlike done,
Honouring an uncontrolled royal wrathful nature,
Mantling passion in a grandeur, crimson grandeur.
Now be my pride then perfect, all one piece. Henceforth
In a wide world of defiance Caradoc lives alone,
Loyal to his own soul, laying his own law down, no law nor
Lord now curb him for ever. O daring! O deep insight!
What is virtue? Valour; only the heart valiant.
And right? Only resolution; will, his will unwavering
Who, like me, knowing his nature to the heart home, nature’s business,
Despatches with no flinching. But will flesh, O can flesh
Second this fiery strain? Not always; O no no!
We cannot live this life out; sometimes we must weary
And in this darksome world what comfort can I find?
Down this darksome world cуmfort whйre can I find
When ’ts light I quenched; its rose, time’s one rich rose, my hand,
By her bloom, fast by her fresh, her fleecиd bloom,
Hideous dashed down, leaving earth a winter withering
With no now, no Gwenvrewi. I must miss her most
That might have spared her were it but for passion-sake. Yes,
To hunger and not have, yйt hope уn for, to storm and strive and
Be at every assault fresh foiled, worse flung, deeper disappointed,
The turmoil and the torment, it has, I swear, a sweetness,
Keeps a kind of joy in it, a zest, an edge, an ecstasy,
Next after sweet success. I am not left even this;
I all my being have hacked in half with her neck: one part,
Reason, selfdisposal, choice of better or worse way,
Is corpse now, cannot change; my other self, this soul,
Life’s quick, this kнnd, this kйen self-feeling,
With dreadful distillation of thoughts sour as blood,
Must all day long taste murder. What do nуw then? Do? Nay,
Deed-bound I am; one deed treads all down here cramps all doing. What do? Not yield,
Not hope, not pray; despair; ay, that: brazen despair out,
Brave all, and take what comes—as here this rabble is come,
Whose bloods I reck no more of, no more rank with hers
Than sewers with sacred oils. Mankind, that mobs, comes. Come!
Enter a crowd, among them Teryth, Gwenlo, Beuno.
. . . . . . . .
After Winefred’s raising from the dead and the breaking out of the fountain.
BEUNO. O now while skies are blue, now while seas are salt,
While rushy rains shall fall or brooks shall fleet from fountains,
While sick men shall cast sighs, of sweet health all despairing,
While blind men’s eyes shall thirst after daylight, draughts of daylight,
Or deaf ears shall desire that lipmusic that ’s lost upon them,
While cripples are, while lepers, dancers in dismal limb-dance,
Fallers in dreadful frothpits, waterfearers wild,
Stone, palsy, cancer, cough, lung wasting, womb not bearing,
Rupture, running sores, what more? in brief; in burden,
As long as men are mortal and God merciful,
So long to this sweet spot, this leafy lean-over,
This Dry Dene, now no longer dry nor dumb, but moist and musical
With the uproll and the downcarol of day and night delivering
Water, which keeps thy name, (for not in rуck wrнtten,
But in pale water, frail water, wild rash and reeling water,
That will not wear a print, that will not stain a pen,
Thy venerable record, virgin, is recorded).
Here to this holy well shall pilgrimages be,
And not from purple Wales only nor from elmy England,
But from beyond seas, Erin, France and Flanders, everywhere,
Pilgrims, still pilgrims, mуre pнlgrims, still more poor pilgrims.
. . . . . . . .
What sights shall be when some that swung, wretches, on crutches
Their crutches shall cast from them, on heels of air departing,
Or they go rich as roseleaves hence that loathsome cбme hither!
Not now to nбme even
Those dearer, more divine boons whose haven the heart is.
. . . . . . . .
As sure as what is most sure, sure as that spring primroses
Shall new-dapple next year, sure as to-morrow morning,
Amongst come-back-again things, thнngs with a revival, things with a recovery,
Thy name…
. . . . . . . .

Best Bars 2018: 50 Bars in Philly That Are Making Drinking Fun Again
Drink
The era of the stuffy bar is finally coming to an end, and the pendulum is swinging back the other way: to bars that are easier, breezier and, honestly, just plain enjoyable.
McCusker’s Tavern in South Philly. Photography by Ted Nghiem
Cocktail Bars
Smart, boozy, but way less stodgy
Irwin’s Preserved graffiti, potted ferns, lovely views, a small-plates menu, and a cocktail program that leans heavily on smartly reconsidered classics, all in a single new addition to the Bok Building. 1901 South 9th Street, East Passyunk.
R&D The former Root went through a transformation recently, from a full-fledged wine bar to a full-fledged cocktail bar (and a new name). Seasonally changing menus by barman Aaron Deary, tasty snacks from the kitchen, and a quiet, grown-up atmosphere push it straight to the top of the city’s best cocktail joints. 1206 Frankford Avenue, Fishtown.
Hop Sing Laundromat Always divisive, Hop Sing lives on its reputation almost as much as it does on its deep stock of liquor. But through serious research, alchemy, and a freakish talent for flavor combinations, owner Lê and his crew have created some of the best cocktails in the entire city behind their unmarked door. 1029 Race Street, Chinatown.
ITV Nick Elmi thinks poached new potatoes and anchovies should be happy- hour snacks; that caviar service is a perfectly reasonable thing for a neighborhood bar to offer; and that a cocktail doesn’t need annoying ingredients to be great. 1615 East Passyunk Avenue, East Passyunk.
Drinks and snacks at Irwin’s in East Passyunk
Ranstead Room The Ranstead Room has always had the vibe of a place that survived Prohibition by buying off the G-men with hookers and Cuban rum, got redecorated once in 1968, then operated in near-silence for 45 years before being taken over by refugee bartenders who love bitters and Cynar. 2013 Ranstead Street, Center City.
The Ripplewood The Rip’s staff takes great pride in their cocktail craftsmanship. And thank God they do, because without them, Ardmore would still be thirsting for a place that can shake up a decent daiquiri, let alone a great one. 29 East Lancaster Avenue, Ardmore.
Where the Neighbors Go
Watering holes for locals who know
Tattooed Mom Bright, weird, cluttered, occasionally sticky — the place looks like a craft store exploded inside, but it’s full of cool people, great beer, fun food, and unusual cocktails that all defy logical description. 530 South Street, Queen Village.
Teresa’s Next Door Twenty-eight taps with interesting brews, a curated wine list (and shop!), lots of whiskeys, and tenders who know the difference between mixing with Schweppes and Fever-Tree — add it all up (it’s a really comfortable place to drink, too) and you get a 2018 James Beard semi-finalist for Outstanding Bar Program. That Teresa’s didn’t win was a crime. 126 North Wayne Avenue, Wayne.
Monk’s Café Like a church where beer nerds worship, Monk’s is a love letter to Belgian beers, mussels and frites, potato salad and pub culture. 264 South 16th Street, Rittenhouse.
Fountain Porter When you’re dreaming about a perfect neighborhood bar, Fountain Porter is what you’re imagining. The prices are cheap, the staff is friendly, the vibe is relaxed, and the $5 burger is one of the best in the city. 1601 South 10th Street, East Passyunk.
Pickering Creek Inn It’s a town stalwart, but one with great craft beer, live music, solid wings, half-price drafts at happy hour, and $2.50 Yuenglings during the weekly “Karaoke Shitshow.” 37 East Bridge Street, Phoenixville.
Johnny Brenda’s After 15 years, JB’s has become an iconic part of the Philly scene. What’s remarkable is that a place that’s already a triple threat (live music, local beer on tap, and a menu better than anyone has a right to expect) keeps improving, year after year. 1201 North Frankford Avenue, Fishtown.
The lounge at Irwin’s in East Passyunk
Tavern on Camac It’s good to have a place like Tavern on Camac in your pocket. It draws a big, loud, fun crowd; pours the drinks strong; and shakes the dust from the rafters with show tunes, Broadway standards and pop hits. There’s also dancing upstairs, for those after a more raucous night. 243 South Camac Street, Midtown Village.
Good Dog Bar After a thorough renovation last year, Good Dog brought on a new chef, installed a new menu (that still respects the crowd favorites), and found a new energy. But the bar didn’t forget how to mix a classic, the taps are ever full of local beers, and you can still get the legendary burger stuffed with Roquefort cheese. 224 South 15th Street, Center City.
Blue Comet Bar & Grill A retro ’60s feel, burgers on the menu, some nice beers on tap. The happy-hour deals are good, they serve $6 martinis all day long, and the house cocktails are all named for classic pop, soul and rock hits from back in the day. 106 South Easton Road, Glenside.
American Sardine Bar ASB is the kind of place that’s always just there for you. Whatever you need — a couple beers, brunch, a vegan cheesesteak, a friendly bartender, a freaking sardine sandwich, a shot of whiskey with a whiskey chaser — you can find it here. Then there are the dozen-odd taps, the deep can list, the backyard patio … 1800 Federal Street, Point Breeze.
Standard Tap Philly bars aren’t exactly impervious to the pressures of new bar trends. Standard Tap remains unflappable, sticking to what it does best (local, quality products; great service) but never resting on its laurels. 901 North 2nd Street, Northern Liberties.
Not Just Drinking
For singing, dancing and playing
Dahlak Yes, it has great Ethiopian and Eritrean food. Yes, it has a bar. But on Tuesday nights, Dahlak is also a destination for West Philly karaoke fans looking to get loud. 4708 Baltimore Avenue, University City.
Spin It’s a 12,000-square-foot ping-pong club and bar with a pub menu, scratch-and-sniff wallpaper, a manifesto (something about uniting the world through table tennis), and drinks named the Topspin, the Backspin and the Fishtown Throwdown. Sure, it’s a chain out of New York. But it’s still a fantastic night out. 211 South 15th Street, Center City.
Bob & Barbara’s This near-legendary city dive bar is also a place for karaoke (Sunday nights), regular Thursday-night drag shows, and live jazz and “liquor-drinkin’ music” on Fridays and Saturdays. 1509 South Street, Grad Hospital.
Doobie’s Go here because the bartender will remember your name. Because the beer is cold and the cocktails are fast. And because there’s an entire locker filled with board games for you and all your friends. 2201 Lombard Street, Fitler Square.
Martha If you (like everyone) like pickles, local booze, kombucha, charcuterie and bocce ball, then you (like everyone) will love Martha. 2113 East York Street, Kensington.
Restaurant Bars
No reservations necessary
Oloroso On Oloroso’s best days, the bar smells entirely of sherry, giant shrimp and pigs’ heads are scattered everywhere, and everyone’s teeth are stained red from sangria. Nice, right? 1121 Walnut Street, Midtown Village.
Friday Saturday Sunday Chad and Hanna Williams turned this longtime institution into a New American powerhouse with a fantastic drinking space downstairs. Black-and-white tile, a marble bar top, and an ever-changing list of cleverly named and brilliantly mixed cocktails. 261 South 21st Street, Rittenhouse.
The bar at Suraya in Fishtown
Suraya The restaurant itself is amazing at all hours of the day. It seems almost unfair that the bar is so good, too — spiking its list with Middle Eastern flavors (za’atar, saffron sugar, orange-blossom water) in a way that could have felt stunt-ish but instead comes off like genius. 1528 Frankford Avenue, Fishtown.
South There’s shrimp and grits, blue crab toasts, and fried chicken touched with honey in the dining room; brown liquor at the bar; and live jazz almost every night. For those who need it, it’s a hit of Southern comfort right in the middle of Philly. 600 North Broad Street, Spring Garden.
Palizzi Social Club If you can get in (it’s members-only), and if you can get a seat at the bar, there are moments here that feel like pure Hollywood magic — like you’re a bit player in some kooky Rat Pack romp. It’s a bar that lives in Technicolor and serves Italian cocktails full of grappa, Galliano, prosecco and over-proof rye. 1408 South 12th Street, East Passyunk.
Live jazz at South in Spring Garden
Royal Boucherie Dark and loud and crowded and fun. There’s no bar in the city right now better for camping out in on a gray day, drinking Gibsons and eating plates of duck meatballs and rabbit terrine. 52 South 2nd Street, Old City.
Farm & Fisherman Tavern You wanna drink local in the ’burbs? Josh Lawler has expanded his farm-to-table aspirations and put together bars that are stocked wide and deep with excellent beers, good wines, four different ciders, lots of whiskey, and seasonally inspired lists of cocktails that lean heavy on locally produced spirits. 575 Horsham Road and 1442 Marlton Pike East, Horsham and Cherry Hill.
Good King Tavern You come here for simple French things done really well: perfect bar food, all the natural wine you could ever dream of, and a focused cocktail list that never quits. 614 South 7th Street, Bella Vista.
Dives and Taverns
A Philly specialty
Oscar’s Tavern It is, and will always be, the same windowless, sin-colored bunker with the same cheap beer, the same crowd of regulars, and the same one-and-a-half-cheesesteak deal. 1524 Sansom Street, Center City.
DelMar Lounge Anyplace that’s survived to 2018 with “Lounge” in its name must have something special going for it. At the Del, it’s the easy bartenders and a crowd that’s just there for the juke, the pool tables, some cheap drinks, and a little conversation. Plus, the back patio is nice when the nights start turning cooler. 304 West Chelten Avenue, Germantown.
McCusker’s Tavern You know, just your average everyday chilled-out neighborhood joint with a Pearl Jam theme. 2601 South 17th Street, South Philly.
Ray’s Happy Birthday Bar Sometimes you just need a friendly place to get a shot and a beer at 7 a.m. 1200 East Passyunk Avenue, East Passyunk.
Dirty Franks When you use “dive bar” as a term of endearment, Franks is the kind of place you’re talking about. 347 South 13th Street, Midtown Village.
At the Source
Beer, cider and booze — made right in the back
Philadelphia Distilling A gorgeous space with windows that look right into the heart of the distilling operation. You can get a tour if you like, or just hang out, drink a couple G&Ts, and have a snack. 25 East Allen Street, Northern Liberties.
Forest & Main These guys make some amazing beer. They don’t ever repeat themselves, which is rather remarkable. And with a recent expansion into the space next door, they now offer cocktails, live music, room for larger groups, and a short, tight menu of bar snacks and small plates. 55-61 North Main Street, Ambler.
Hale & True For a long time, these folks were schlepping their cider door-to-door and from event to event. But now, they’ve got their own taproom where they can show off their straight-from-the-orchard PA ciders (plus some local beers and spirits) and a short menu of snacks done in collaboration with Good King Tavern. 613 South 7th Street, Bella Vista.
Root Down A psychedelic vibe combined with a straightforward menu, house sours on tap, and lots of choices to-go make this a winner among the locals. 1 North Main Street, Phoenixville.
Borough Brewhouse Neshaminy Creek’s brewpub has limited-run and seasonal beers on tap, along with meads, ciders and brews from other local breweries. The kitchen does a locally sourced farm-to-table menu. And the space is big, bright, comfortable and casual. 208 York Road, Jenkintown.
Dock Street In its 33 years, the West Philly brewpub has never been anything but wonderful. Tried and true. And now, with its new(ish) cannery and lounge pouring great cocktails and drafts, its whole brand is, somehow, fresh and exciting again. 701 South 50th Street, West Philly.
Fermentery Form You know that dream you have about finding some hidden, weird, amazing little secret place down an alley in a neighborhood you don’t usually visit? This is that place — a microbrewery and tiny tasting room doing some of the most fascinating beers you’ll ever try. 1700 North Palethorp Street, Kensington.
Sports Bars
Where real fans go on game day
Toll Man Joe’s Wings, burgers, beers, and sports on the TV: This place (named for Joe “Toll Man” Paul, 2000 Wing Bowl champion) understands that Philadelphians don’t need much more than that when it comes to watching the game with a bunch of friends and strangers. 26 East Oregon Avenue, South Philly.
Bar-Ly Dozens of taps, and big flat-screens behind the bar. Plus, the menu reaches beyond the standard wings and fried food to offer tacos, shumai, fish-ball skewers and more — appropriate for the only sports bar in Chinatown. 101 North 11th Street, Chinatown.
Stats on 17th More than 20 TVs, a projection system, room enough for 450 people, and two bars and a kitchen ready to handle those kinds of crowds. 111 South 17th Street, Rittenhouse.
Union Jack’s Olde Glory Pub Beer and chicken wings, a TV hanging behind the bar … the big difference here is that the focus is on soccer and rugby matches. 2750 Limekiln Pike, Glenside.
Whiskey Joints
Brown-liquor emporiums
Fiume It’s tiny. It’s half-hidden in a space above Abyssinia. But if you’re a serious beer nerd or dedicated whiskey drinker, you already know all about Fiume. 229 South 45th Street, University City.
Lloyd Whether you’re sipping an Eagle Rare, working your way through a Jack and Wendy (Four Roses, sweet vermouth, lemon and apricot), or throwing down with the house Citywide (the Lloyd — a High Life and a shot of Old Grand-Dad), Lloyd is the place for brown spirits. 529 East Girard Avenue, Fishtown.
Village Whiskey The biggest problem with this place is that it’s crowded. The second problem: It ain’t cheap. But if it’s expensive and still drawing a big crowd, imagine what that says about the whiskey selection, cocktails and menu. 118 South 20th Street, Rittenhouse.
Goat’s Beard The place has a whiskey bible. Looking for something unusual? Go here first. 4201 Main Street, Manayunk.

Waiting For Thunder
It was too hot inside. So Redd and Lohn were out on the porch, waiting. Listening to the stormchasers’ radio feed - a faint chatter, ongoing, all treble and no bass. Listening to the rain. (Redd tenderly gives Lohn a haircut, and somehow they end up kissing.)

The Music Video Kiss
Right before a beach shoot for a music video, Lohn’s fiancée backs out of the production, and now the video is missing its romantic finale: a kiss. For the sake of Lohn’s passion project, Redd steps in. But one peck isn’t enough - they need multiple takes before the sun sets, and each feels more intense than the last. When Lohn returns at dawn, craving Redd’s touch despite being engaged to someone else, it’s clear they’ve crossed a line. Either they suppress their feelings, or their urges will ruin everything - including their friendship

“Did you know,” Lohn said, voice dry and rough, not yet ready to be used, “back in the day, the golden age of Hollywood, or whatever folks call it, they weren’t allowed to show indecent things to the public. Kissin’, and that. So they’d show two people, like, sharing a drink from the same bottle.” Lohn handed back the cigarette, and Redd took it, tapping the ash off the balcony and into the pink sunrise before them. “Sharin’ a cigarette.”

Say It A Second Time
Returning to the Dollywood theme park after his second divorce, Lohn struggles to enjoy a weekend of rollercoasters and cinnamon bread the same way he once did, despite his best friend’s efforts. He’s convinced that the kind of love he craves will elude him forever. But when a couple of tourists get him and Redd to pose for a photo, an intimate opportunity presents itself, and Lohn can’t pass it up. Maybe after eight years, two divorces, and one kiss from Redd’s lips, something good might finally take.
