Not to dismiss fan stuff by any means but I do feel like people forget that undertale never implies that sans remembers exactly what happens after every reset, only that resets happen and he can reasonably deduce the culprit. his behavior changes based on what you do in the current timeline, not the other ones, and although au's on occasion involve a sans that can remember what happens in each reset, that doesn't mean that classic sans can and we should remember that when discussing his character

I find something really interesting about Deltarune, and I want to talk about it.

YOU are canon to Deltarune.

Everything in real life that has ever happened is canon to Deltarune.

You are not playing as the Player, you ARE the Player. And not in an "oh, I need to imagine I'm involved in this for the game to make sense!" way, but in a literal, by the act of playing, you are the Player way.

And that's what kind of makes the game so real- When, instead of playing as a figure, you are the figure, through and through and without having to do anything, it kind of ropes you in, and brings itself out of the realm of fiction while it's at it.

Yes, the game is fiction, and yes, nothing in it is really happening, and the code is written. But when you're a part of the narrative, it becomes very easy to forget that, and so there's very few leaps in logic you need to take in order to make it feel real.

Kris is a video game character, both in reality and in canon. The game isn't fiction, it's reality. In the lore of Deltarune, Deltarune is a video game that you are playing. The exact same is true in reality.

This also leads to something many of us, including me, are guilty of- separating the Player and ourselves. Every instance of Deltarune that has ever been played has a different Player character, because it's a different person. But that gets confusing, so we refer to ourselves, and after time, them, as the Player. As time goes on, it's very easy to feel like your actions aren't your actions, but the Player's, and you're just moving the story along. Even if you haven't done Snowgrave, you can claim that the Player did snowgrave, because plenty of Players did snowgrave. But you didn't, and as such, it's not canon for your Deltarune.

We cannot characterize the Player. We cannot give them a personality seperate from our own. They are you, and you are them. Your actions are your own, and no matter what COULD happen, it doesn't until you make it. The Player is only malicious if you are malicious. The Player is sympathetic if you are sympathetic. If you don't want Kris to suffer, then the Player doesn't want Kris to suffer, and you're not a bad person. Your love is canon.

#i'm not articulating this how i want #you cannot make distinct you and the player‚ since you are the player‚ in fiction and in reality. it's just another name for you.#this came from me theorizing that Don't Forget was sung by us‚ or rather‚ me #and someone else argued that it couldn't be‚ since the player is too malicious to have done so #no‚ they aren't‚ not if you would sing this song to them‚ for any reason. the player is not evil for playing the game‚ it's a game.#you are the player.#the player is not a bad person. you are not a bad person.#anyway. i dont think the singing of dont forget at the end is entirely canon‚ exactly #or no‚ i do‚ but i dont think that it's one of the characters singing it. it's the song that plays during the credits‚ canonically #since everything that is reality in real life is also reality in deltarune #but if i had to assign a character‚ it'd be us. we're the kind of person to sing it #or. i'm the kind of person to sing it #deltarune #deltarune player #deltarune analysis #analysis #analysis post #media analysis #utdr #nutdealer posting

I don't think enough people talk about YOU TWO. People are always attributing various things to gaster, but there were two other people in the room with him when it happened. They could be the ones doing these things. I always felt like a lot of the things attributed to him seem to contradict each other personality-wise. Maybe one of them is going around giving random short guys new, never-before-seen complexes while the other is handing out eggs, or making fountains.

On deltarune.com/chair there's dialogue that appears in the tab name: "But what if it could get... ...darker than dark?" This seems like it was said surrounding one of Gaster's dark experiments, but notably, it is not in all capital letters, like Gaster always speaks in. This was someone else talking. They use capitalization the normal way, just like the voice that discards the vessel, so they could be the same person. I know just about everyone uses capitalization the normal way, the connecting thread here is both being in relation to Gaster, the capitalization just means that them being the same person is allowed.

#what if W D and Gaster are all separate people #Ok now my personal headcanon:#the one who connects you to DELTARUNE at the beginning of the game is gaster (obviously). the one handing out eggs is also gaster.#since he's shattered across time and space. that's why his existence is so... debatable lol.#+ you can find him in the light world which would seem to imply he's a lightner. but when you seal the fountain there isn't someone extra #in the room with you.#no matter what you do in the dark world #he isn't there by the time you seal the fountain #if you take the egg he isn't yhere #if you don't take the egg he was not there #if you don't enter that room. he exists in a state of superposition. and when you turn on the lights (observe him) he collapses into #nonexistence.#does that make sense?#anyway. second headcanon:#the guy who fucked up jevil and spamton #is also the one who discarded the vessel #and is one of 'you two'.#and the other person.. no clue #and alphys is the knight and dess sings don't forget which is the song from the water #deltarune #deltarune lore #deltarune theory

Deltarune seems to have this developing theme of memories and nostalgia - a longing to return to simpler times, when all your needs were taken care of, where your family were all still together, when you had some sense of who and what you were, even if it was just a comforting lie. When your choices actually seemed to matter.

The game itself is an example of this - all our favourite characters from Undertale transposed to a new context, their characters re-imagined and remixed as if part of some bizarre dream. A game whose foundations are built upon the memories of the success of its predecessor, perhaps recalled by somebody who saw those initial events occur and misremembered key details in the retelling.

The Dark Worlds seem to run entirely on the logic of imagination and dreams, and what are dreams and pretend-play but remixed memories? What are King and Lancer to Susie if not a cypher for her own relationship with her parent(s)? What is Queen to Noelle if not her controlling mother in another guise? What are Jevil and Spamton to Kris if not constant reminders of their own lack of agency and freedom?

And what else are Save Points - "The light only you can see" - but a method of "encoding" those memories; a way to seemingly ensure that they are not forgotten? But where did they come from, and what are they doing with those memories we're feeding them?

Who - or what - is with us in the dark, and why are they so keen on us not forgetting?
